Chapter 7-Gathering supplies
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl drives his bike down the road with Alicia behind him. "We should be coming up on the first town soon!" Alicia shouts behind him. Daryl nods. They had left the place they stopped last night about an hour ago. Daryl could see buildings as they got close to the town. Daryl stops the bike inside the small town about five minutes later. He looks around and sees a walker. He climbs off his bike and shoots the walker in the head with his crossbow. He walks up to the walker and pulls his arrow out of the walker, and reloads his crossbow.
"So why did we stop?" Dwight asks him as they get out of the R.V.
"This town has a few stores I want to check," Daryl tells him.
"Like what?" Rosita asks.
"A pawn shop. There is a store that should have some seeds near here. There is a school nearby that was used at the beginning. It might still have some supplies. And a U-haul service," Daryl says.
"The U-haul service is smart. We can use that to carry more supplies," John says. Daryl nods.
"Why the pawnshop?" Carl asks from where he sat by Enid.
"There could be woodstoves and all kinds of useful supplies that have been pawned," June says.
"So who goes where?" Nick asks.
"Shane, take Madison, Cyndie, and Nick and go to the garden store. Rosita, Morgan, and Dwight go to the U-Haul store and grab one and a trailer. Me, John, June, Carl, Enid, and Alicia will check the school," Daryl tells them.
"What about the pawnshop?" Dwight asks.
"We'll check that last. Meet back here in two hours," Daryl says. Everybody nods as they split up. Daryl, Enid, Carl, Alicia, John, and June climb into the truck and head for the school.
Nick's P.O.V
Nick and Cyndie followed by Shane and Madison as they headed for the store. "You have experience with seeds?" Cyndie asks him.
"Yeah," Nick tells her. "In the stadium, we used to live at. I helped plant the seeds," Cyndie nods as they see a walker coming towards them. Nick pulls out his knife and walks up to the walker. He stabs it on the top of the head and lets it fall to the ground. Nick walks back over to Cyndie. "What about you? You lead the Oceanside?"
"Not for very long. My grandma led the place until Enid killed her. She didn't do it on purpose. But I was put in charge," Cyndie tells him. "I don't know if I'm fit to be a leader,"
"Seems like the people of Oceanside trust you to be their leader," Nick tells her. Cyndie nods as they get to the store. Shane taps on the window and looks at Nick.
"How do you like Alexandria?" Shane asks him.
"It isn't bad," Nick tells Shane. "I didn't really leave the house much. I spend most of my time there with Morgan. Why didn't you stay behind with Judith?"
"Judith has Rick and Michonne. I know she is safe. I know you and Alicia are adults and can take care of yourselves. But I worry about you guys," Shane tells him. Madison smiles at him.
"Thanks," Nick says. A walker presses itself up against the window. Shane pulls out his knife and opens the door enough for the walker to push its head outside. He stabs the walker in the head and pushes the door the rest of the way open. He pulls the walker outside and puts it on the side.
"Come on," Shane says as he leads them inside.
Dwight's P.O.V
Dwight walks with Morgan. Rosita hung in the back and watched behind them. "You seem more relaxed out here," Morgan says to him.
"Being on the road is simple. You survive. That is all there is to it. You don't have to worry about people who hate you killing you in your sleep for what you did," Dwight tells him.
"Hasn't gotten any easier in Alexandria?" Morgan asks him.
"No. I don't even want to go to the Sanctuary or Hilltop. Tara hates my guts. She has her reasons, and I don't blame her. Some of the saviors probably want to kill me for what happened to them," Dwight says.
"You did the right thing, Dwight," Rosita says from behind him.
"I shot Daryl and took you, Daryl, Michonne, and Glenn to Negan. I'm the reason Sherry had to marry him and the reason she left," Dwight tells her. "I might have done the right thing. But I did it too late, and people died," Rosita nods as they get to the U-Haul place.
"I'll check inside," Morgan says.
"I'll come," Dwight says. Morgan nods as they walk to the door. Morgan hits his stick against the glass. Two walkers show up at the door.
"I'll open it. You kill 'em," Morgan says as Dwight goes to the door. He pulls it open. The walkers move towards Morgan. Morgan drives his stick through the first walker's head. He hits the second one in the side of the head, knocking it to the ground before he stabs it in the head. Dwight goes into the store and shines his flashlight around.
Dwight goes to the key rack. He grabs a key off the rack and looks at Morgan. "Come on," Dwight says.
"Dwight," Morgan says, making him look at him.
"I killed people to. People who didn't deserve to die. You can't fix it. But you can do your best to make up for it," Morgan says. Dwight nods as he follows Morgan outside.
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl stops outside the gate of the school and sees walkers inside. "How many do you think will be in the school?" Carl asks.
"That is what I'm worried about," Daryl says. John holds the bolt cutter he got from the truck out to Daryl, who grabs them. He cuts the chain and pulls the gate open. "Stay close," He tells them. Daryl raises his crossbow and shoots a walker in the head. He throws his crossbow around his back and pulls out his knife as Alicia kills a walker with her barrel. John and June both stab a walker as Carl and Enid kill two beside Alicia. Daryl stabs the last one in the head. He pulls his bolt out of the walker he shot and reloads his crossbow. "Enid, stay out here with John and June. Search these tents and some of the bodies. Gates were locked. There must be some supplies left," Enid nods as she follows John and June. Daryl, Alicia, and Carl walk to the high school door and see it was chained shut with a herd pushing itself up against the glass.
"Now what?" Alicia asks.
"Go help John, June, and Enid. Carl and I will look for another entrance," Daryl says. Alicia nods as she walks away. "Come on," Carl nods as he follows Daryl.
"What was Texas like?" Carl asks Daryl as they walk. "Never been there,"
"Pretty hot down there," Daryl tells him. "Lots of fields and not many people," Carl nods as he looks ahead.
"Do you want to kill him?" Carl asks Daryl. "Negan?"
"I did. But killing him wouldn't bring Glenn back. Killing him wouldn't make up for what I did," Daryl tells him. "As long as he never gets out of that cell. I'm okay,"
"I know what it's like to cause the death of something you care about. Dale's dead because of me," Carl says.
"You couldn't have known that walker would have got him," Daryl tells Carl.
"And you couldn't have known Negan would have killed Glenn. You were mad because of what he did to Abraham and how he was treating Rosita," Carl says.
"Yeah," Daryl says as they get to a side entrance. "Stay close," Daryl tells Carl, who nods.
John's P.O.V
John walked with Alicia as Enid and June looked through a tent. John walked into a tent that had a walker crushed under a shelf looking at him. Alicia walks over to the walker and stabs it in the head. "Have you ever been to a place like this?" Alicia asks him.
"No, I barely left my cabin before June came," John says. "You?"
"My town was like this at the beginning. When the world first went to shit," Alicia says.
"You came from L.A., right?" John asks Alicia, who nods.
"Yeah, me, Nick, my Mom, Travis, Ofelia, Strand, and Daniel," Alicia tells him. "I miss it, you know. Worrying about college and what I'm going to eat for dinner. Having dinner with my family and hanging out with my boyfriend,"
"I miss my shows," John tells her. "Being able to forget the world in those shows and just have fun,"
"You buy those guns?" Alicia asks John.
"No, I found them on my porch one day. I think my Dad left them," John says.
"Where is he?" Alicia asks him.
"I don't know," John tells her as he grabs an Ar and checks the magazine. Alicia nods as she continues to look around.
"Sorry," Alicia says to him.
"No need to be. Nice to be reminded about the people we loved," John says to Alicia, who nods with a small smile.
Carl's P.O.V
Carl follows Daryl through the school. They come across a chained door and hear walkers on the other side. "Think that is the front?" Carl asks.
"Yeah," Daryl says.
"What is here that we are looking for?" Carl asks him.
"Basement. Someone in Hilltop came from here. Got out with a few more people. They told Aaron that the school had supplies in the basement," Daryl says. Carl nods as they get a door Daryl pushes open that leads downstairs. Daryl gets to the bottom and flashlights his light around. He sees beds and some boxes with food.
"They were right," Carl says as someone grabs him from behind and presses a gun to his head. "Daryl," Daryl turns around and looks at the man.
"Let him go," Daryl says.
"I don't want any trouble," He says.
"Me either. We are just looking for supplies. Got a whole group outside. We'll take you somewhere safe," Daryl says. "I'm Daryl Dixon. That's Carl Grimes,"
"I'm Tobias," Tobias says as he lets Carl go. "Do you actually have somewhere safe?"
"We do," Daryl says. "Help us move these supplies, and we'll take you there," Tobias gives a slow note as he grabs a box. Daryl and Carl grab two boxes and head upstairs. They leave the school and head outside, and walk to the front of the school.
"Found another way in, I see," Alicia says as she walks up to them.
"Alicia?" Tobias says. Alicia looks at him. "Alicia Clark,"
"Tobias?" Alicia says.
"You know him?" Carl asks.
"Yeah, we used to go to school together," Alicia says. "He ended up in my Mom's office a lot,"
"Yeah," Tobias says.
"I can't believe you made it," Alicia says.
"Is Madison alive?" Tobias asks.
"Yeah, she is," Alicia says. "She's in town somewhere,"
"That's good," Tobias says.
"Alicia, stay here with June and Enid. Carl, Tobias, John, and I will head back to the others. This place has a lot of supplies. We'll clear as much as we can and move on tomorrow," Daryl says. Alicia nods as Daryl goes to the truck with the three of them.
Madison's P.O.V
Madison, Nick, Shane, Cyndie, Dwight, Rosita, and Morgan stood around the cars. They had taken what was useful from the pawnshop while they waited for Daryl. "They get lost?" Nick asks.
"Might have found something useful," Madison says. "If they aren't back soon, we'll go looking," Nick nods as they hear a truck.
"About time," Dwight says as he stands up. Daryl stops the truck and gets out. "You take a nap?"
"Yeah, slept with the walkers," Daryl says as John and Carl step out, followed by Tobias.
"Tobias?" Madison says as she walks towards the man.
"Hi, Madison," Tobias says. "It's really good to see you,"
"Good to see you, too," Madison says. "Where is Alicia?"
"At the school. It is stocked with supplies. We'll get what we can and stay outside. We'll continue on tomorrow," Daryl says. They nod as they climb into the cars. Dwight climbs into the U-Haul with the trailer as they head for the school.
Night
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl walks around the fence on watch. He looks behind him as Alicia walks up to him. "You want company?" Alicia asks.
"Sure. How is Tobias doing?" Daryl asks.
"Catching up with my Mom and Nick," Alicia says. "It's nice seeing someone from the old world,"
"I didn't have anybody in the old world. I had Merle, and that was it," Daryl says. Alicia nods as she follows him. Daryl stops when he hears a noise on the other side of the wall. He looks around the wall and sees Carl and Enid kissing. "Is this what kids do?" Daryl whispers to Alicia with a smirk.
"You never kissed your crush behind the school?" Alicia asks him with a smirk.
"No, never had a crush," Daryl says. Daryl pulls out his knife and throws his knife onto the ground behind them. Carl and Enid jump and look around as Carl grabs Daryl's knife.
"Very funny, Daryl," Carl says. Daryl walks over to Carl and grabs his knife.
"Get a room," Daryl tells him. The two teens blush.
"Ignore him. What you two are doing is very natural," Alicia says.
"Yeah, for her," Daryl says. "I' fucking with you," Daryl says as he puts his knife into his holster. "But wait until you get some protection," He tells them with a smirk.
"Shut up," Enid says.
"I'm serious. Having a kid in all this is dangerous," Daryl says as he sits on the steps. "I ain't your parents, but I don't want to see either of you get hurt. And until we get back to Alexandria. I'm in charge of you. I don't care if you do this. Just don't sneak off to do it. Let someone know most people here have sneaked off before. Okay?" Daryl asks.
"Yeah," Carl says. "We got it,"
"Good, Carl, why don't you join me on watch. You guys should get some sleep," Daryl says. Alicia and Enid nod as they walk away. Carl walks beside Daryl.
"Have you ever wanted kids?" Carl asks him.
"Nah, too worried I'd end up like my Pa. You aren't thinking about becoming one, are you?" Daryl asks.
"No, right now. But someday, I want to become one," Carl says.
"You'll be a great one, kid," Daryl tells him.
"So would you," Carl says. "Our parents don't decide who we are, Daryl. I've known you for a long time now. The way you handled Judith in the prison shows you would be a great father,"
"Let's stay quiet. Listen for anything," Daryl says. Carl nods as he walks beside Daryl.
Thanks for reading. The Carl and Enid being caught was an idea given to me by a review, and I had a Daryl and Carl moment between them. If nobody knows who Tobias is. He was a character in season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead. I have one more character surprise at the prison. Who do you think it is? I want John and Alicia to have a different relationship than they had in the show. They didn't really interact much, and I want them to have more of a friendship.
