I waited until an hour had passed and I was positive dad wouldn't hear me leaving the house before I planned my escape.
"Okay okay I got everything ready. Leave the light off, cover pillows with my blanket in case dad comes in the room. Climb out the window and down drain pipe. Call Dennis from a phonebooth and have him pick me up from a nearby bookstore. Easy. Right?"
I made sure everything was set so my dad if he came into the room thought I was asleep. Which wasn't too far fetched since I had to sleep early because of the ammount of medication I took sometimes.
"Bag with water, some of my medicine, money, and my game ticket inside my smaller bag pocket. Okay I am ready. Now for the tricky part. Escaping."
I peeked outside my door to make sure dad was distracted. He was barely visible but he was watching TV from where I could tell.
I quietly closed the door and tiptoed across the room to the window. I slid it open and with a deep breath I climbed out into the chilly fall afternoon and clung onto the window frame for dear life.
"Ah-Okay okay. Just don't look down."
I pulled myself up enough to close the window and I winced when it made a loud noise. I waited to make sure I hadn't blown my cover. When I heard nothing to my relief, I reached my hand over and tightly grabbed the drainpipe.
"Okay...now the other hand."
I let go of the window frame and gripped the drain pipe with my other hand and held on strongly.
"Easy does it-"
No sooner had I made it a foot, when the pipe collapsed under my weight and it sent me falling down into the bushes below.
"Augh-Oof! Oww..."
I yanked myself out of the hydrangenas bush and dusted the dirt and leaves off my skirt.
"Whose there?!"
"Shit, not dad!"
I covered my mouth and hid behind the small frame of the house in the shadows. Dad came around the house with a flashlight in hand. I swallowed my throat as he came closer to find the broken drain pipe.
"Oh the drain pipe broke. Going to have to head over to the hardware store and buy some replacement parts-"
A piece of the window frame broke just as he said that and it fell onto the driveway below.
"And fix Octavia's window."
Dad sighed as he headed back inside to grab his car keys. Not taking any chances I made a break for it down the street to the nearest phone booth.
I could actually run pretty good because my doctor encouraged I get plenty of exercise to stabilize my heart. I still couldn't join a sport though because my dad thought too much exercise would strain my heart. Which wasn't entirely true since my mom used to be in track. My dad just didn't want me to do anything that involved any kind of strain.
Still I had to pause once I reached the phone booth because my chest was hurting. Once I managed to get my heart under control, I stepped inside and quickly dialed Dennis's number. The phone rang about three times before a woman in her mid 40s answered.
"Hello?"
"Hello Mrs Kim? Is Dennis Kim at home? I'm his classmate Octavia. He told me to call him?"
"Yes my son is here. One second. DENNIS! A CUTE GIRL FROM SCHOOL IS CALLING YOU! IT'S- What's your name?"
"Octavia."
"IT'S OCTAVIA! He's coming now. It was nice to briefly meet you."
"Nice to meet you too ma'am."
"Here's Dennis."
I heard some whispering on the other end before the caller's voice changed to Dennis.
"Hello? Octavia?"
"Hi Dennis."
"So your dad said you could go to the game?"
"Yeah, the reason I'm calling is because I need you to pick me up about a couple of blocks away from the house. My dad is going to be in bed by the time you get here and he said he would appreciate not to be disturbed."
"That is no problem at all. Where do you want me to pick you up?"
"By Artemis Bookstore on Wilford Avenue."
"I know that place, I passed by a few times on the way to school. I should be there to pick you up in about 15 minutes."
"Okay Dennis thank you."
"You're welcome. See you then."
"Bye."
"Bye."
I hung up the phone and was about to exit the phonebooth when I spotted Dad's 1972 Honda Civic driving by the street. I turned around and pretended I was on the phone and prayed he wouldn't recognize me. Luckily, his car kept going and I sighed deeply in relief.
I walked out of the phonebooth and headed over to the Artemis Bookstore. I sat at a table and waited for Dennis outside. The late afternoon sun changed to early night by the time I saw his truck pull up. He rolled down his window and waved at me.
"Hey Octavia."
"Hi Dennis."
"You ready to go to the game?"
"Yeah let's go!"
~
We pulled up to the school stadium and Dennis found a parking spot in the very back. I didn't care about the walk, I was just excited to be here.
"Time for the third game of the season! Whoo!"
"Yay. Football."
"What was that? I can't hear your excitement. Repeat after me. ARE WE ARE GONNA WATCH SOME FOOTBALL?!"
"Yes?"
"LOUDER! ARE WE GONNA WATCH SOME FOOTBALL?!"
"Yes!"
"AND ARE WE GOING TO ENJOY IT?!"
"YESSSSSSS!"
"OKAY! Then let's go and watch some FOOTBALL!"
"Yeah!"
We both bursted out laughing at how silly we were being. But I wasn't going to deny my newfound excitement. Dennis held my hand without any hesitation and guided me to the stadium. One of the teachers stood behind the ticket booth and was getting into character.
"Tickets! Hand over your tickets here! If you kids don't have one you can't watch the game! Tickets! Tickets! Tickets please!"
I pulled out my ticket from my school bag and handed it to Dennis.
"Okay you two can sit in the far left! Enjoy the game! Tickets! Tickets please!"
We stepped into the area below the tall rows of bleachers, and it soon became really overwhelming because it was so crowded. Everyone was scrambling to enter the gates.
My heart tightened up and took quick pacing breaths to keep it calm.
All while trying to calm down my thoughts.
Not now!
Not now!
Please not now!
"Octavia?"
"Hmm? W-What?"
"Are you okay?"
Dennis said as I realized I had completely stood still and he was looking at me worriedly. To him I must have looked like I completely froze for no reason at all.
"Yeah yeah I'm fine. I'm- I've just never been to a football game before."
"Really? You haven't?"
"No, this is my first ever game."
"Well in that case let me help you make the most of your first trip to a football game by guiding you safely to your seat. Do you trust me to escort you to the bleachers safely, Octavia?"
"I- Yes, I do."
"Let's go." Dennis said as he smiled at me.
I felt my face flush as I shyly looked away and let him continue guiding me up the bleachers. This time he held his other arm forward to keep others from capsizing us as we fought to get to our seats.
Eventually when it got even more crowded I felt his arm go around my shoulder and he held me close so we couldn't be seperated as we passed through the crowd together.
"Is this alright?"
"Yeah it's alright. Thank you."
Oh my god!
Oh my god!
Is this really happening?!
When we finally made it through the crowd I gasped in awe at how brightly lit the entire field was. I kept looking at the opposing teams as they tried to get the advantage over each other as we approached our seats.
"And here is your seat ma'am."
"Thank you."
He pulled away and sat down beside me as we watched the game. He quickly explained to me how the game works and I felt like I understood it enough to know who was winning.
Our team was the Landgraab High Llamas vs the Ridgewood Cardinals. Our team was losing 7-4 and it wasn't close to half time yet. Being here was so exhilarating and I began to also understand how people could get so excited for football.
As we neared half time one of our teammates caught the ball and everyone in the bleachers stood up and began cheering for our team. I was eager to be a part of it I began to cheer as well. Dennis laughed as he saw me get up and cheer and he stood up as well to cheer with me.
The player nearly reached our rivals endzone and everyone froze as they waited to see if the moment was going to help our team catch up or not.
"AND IT'S A TOUCHDOWN!"
"Whoooo!"
"Radical yeah!!!"
Without thinking I grabbed Dennis's hand and held it up as I jumped up and down. He laughed and started jumping with me.
The score changed from 7 to 12 and we were now 1 point behind the rival team. 12-13
"AND IT'S HALFTIME! IF YOU FOLKS WANT SOME REFRESHMENTS WHILE YOU WAIT FOR THE SECOND HALF TO START, THE REFRESHMENT STAND IS OPEN NOW!" The principal yelled into the speaker in the booth high above the bleachers
"I'll go bring back some snacks. Anything the lady wants?"
"Well what are the options?"
"They have hotdogs, nachos, candy, lemonade and/or soda to drink. Or some crackers and a very small salad if you're feeling simple."
"In that case, I'll have a hotdog with some candy and a glass of lemonade."
"Great choice! If the lady asks she will recieve. I'll be right back."
As he left I thought I was so clever to order everything my dad forbid me from eating. No hotdogs since anything but whole wheat bread was not good for me. Candy was absolutely out of the question, and lemonade had too much sugar in it.
But I was too happy to care about what I ate. It was my first time watching a game after all.
My body could survive one night off the diet.
I was so distracted by my excitement I failed to notice Lacy walking by with her group of lackeys as usual and they had spotted me.
"What are you doing here loser? I thought I told you girls who think they are better than everyone else don't belong here. Get out of the seat and get the hell out of this stadium."
"I'm a girl who think she's better than everyone else? Really? Have you tried to looking in the mirror Lacy? Because that description suits you better."
"Oooh she got right in your facial with that Lacy."
"Shut up Stacy."
"Okay..."
"I'm not going to tell you twice. Leave this fucking stadium right now or I'm going to make you regret ever defying me."
"Go ahead. See what happens."
Lacy growled out of anger before grabbing my hair tightly and trying to forcefully rip out some of my hair.
"Ahhhhhhhh! Let go of me- owww! You idiot! Let go!"
"Girls! Hold her down while I show this stuck up bitch whose in charge of this school!"
I fought to get out of their grips but they pinned me down by my arms while Lacy grinned gleefully at my struggles.
"I'm going to make you regret ever telling me what to do!"
"You..."
"What? Speak up! I. Can't. Hear. You." Lacy said as she poked her finger roughly into my chest.
"You- TALK TOO MUCH!" I yelled while I craned my leg up and kicked her square in the nose.
She crumpled back out of pain before losing her footing and tumbled down three rows of bleachers. I didn't expect that to happen but the kick to her nose was so satisfying. Her friends let go of me in concern for Lacy and I took the chance to bolt out of there.
I had reached the bottom part of the bleachers when I bumped into Dennis who was coming back with some snacks.
"Whoah! Octavia! Why are you running so fast? Wha-And what happened to your hair?"
"No time to explain! Let's go!" I said as I yanked him by his arm to the parking lot.
We both scrambled to the car, moving quickly to get the doors open and drive away from here. I had just put on my seatbelt when I flinched in surprise to see a drink splash the front of the truck's windshield. I squinted through the mess to see Lacy's charging over to the truck and she was enraged.
"YOU BETTER GET BACK HERE! YOU ARE IN FOR A WORLD OF PAIN BITCH!"
"Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Dennis!"
"Whoah what did you do to make her so angry?!"
"Drive first, questions later!"
"No problems there!" Dennis said as he reversed the truck quickly and pulled us away from the stadium. I checked the rearview mirror to see Lacy yelling more profanities at us.
We drove off in silence for few minutes before he pulled up into a random street and parked the truck. We looked at each other in stunned silence before bursting out in laughter.
"Hehehhehahahahaha. Well Lacy definitely lost her cool. What the hell happened while I went to go get us snacks?!"
"Hehehe Hahahahaha! I don't know she just told me I didn't belong there, we started fighting, I kicked her in the face and made a run for it."
"So she was just mad over that?! Talk about a drama queen!"
"No kidding!"
We both kept laughing as the moon shined above, almost like it was laughing with us at the end of this ridiculous night.
"A-And heh heh heh and you're hair?"
I had been laughing so much that I hadn't even noticed the mess my hair must have looked like.
"Oh. Lacy grabbed it and nearly ripped some hair right off my head."
"God that girl is crazy. Do you mind if I fix it for you? I can braid it for you if you like."
"Yes please."
I undid my scrunchie and turned away from Dennis so he could run his fingers through my hair and fix it. It took him about a few minutes to finish braiding my hair. I quickly rolled down the window to look at my hair in the mirror.
"Wow thank you. My hair has never looked this great."
"Don't mention it."
"And I'm sorry we didn't get to see the entire game because of me."
"That was in no way your fault. It was only Lacy who ruined our nice night for us."
"She seems to have a knack for showing up when she's not wanted."
"She does. And since I want to see you again how do you feel about meeting up in the square tomorrow morning for a proper first date?"
"A d-date?"
"Yes. That is if you want to."
Dating boys was absolutely out of the question but I knew deep down I really wanted to see him again too. He just knew how to make me laugh and open up more than I ever have for anyone. When I realized this is what I wanted I said yes.
Dennis was excited as we shared details for our date tomorrow morning. I was so excited too that I failed to notice that dad was already waiting for me outside the front door.
"Oh there's my dad."
"He does not look happy."
"No. It's because I lied about going out tonight."
"What? But I thought you asked him?"
"I was. But I knew he would have never said yes because he never lets me do anything. I'm sorry I lied about that I just didn't want to miss out on doing something fun with you."
"Well alright, I just hope I didn't get you in trouble."
"You didn't. I take full responsibility for whatever happens next." I said as I handed him a wad of paper with my number on it.
"Call me tomorrow and we can talk about when you want to meet and everything else."
"Alright, bye Octavia."
"Bye Dennis."
I said as I got out of the car, my earlier happiness fading as I walked over to my dad to face him.
"Hi dad."
"Octavia, what did I tell you about going out at night without my permission?"
"To not do that."
"That's right. Who was that just now?"
"That was Dennis."
"And he asked you to go somewhere with him?"
"He did?"
"Like on a date?"
"No we just went to the game as friends."
"You know you're not allowed to go to games."
"I do."
"But seeing as this is the first time you've ever done this I'm going to cut you some slack and not punish you. As long as you promise not to do that again without asking me first."
"Yes sir."
"Is there anything else you'd like to tell me young lady?"
"We exchanged numbers to stay in touch and we already made plans to spend time together as friends tommorrow."
"Well I appreciate you telling me. Alright you can go tomorrow just don't stay out too late."
"Really?"
"You looked like you had fun so I'm not going to get in the way of that. Just promise me one thing."
"What's that?"
"You absolutely cannot date him."
"Okay dad."
I had no intention of listening to my dad's request. I can always sneak out of my room again if he doesn't let me see him.
