Chapter 76-The ambush

Clementine's P.O.V

The world slowed down for Clementine as she watched Kenny fall to the ground with a bullet in hole in the back of his head. She stared at the body, dazed and confused. She felt someone grab her and move her behind a car. "Clementine!" Daniel says. Clementine looks at him, the world back to normal as bullets and gunshots filled the air. "You stay right here. Do not move until I come back."

"I can fight," Clementine says as she wipes the tears from her eyes and withdraws her gun. "I can fight."

"Stay close, then," Daniel grudgingly tells her. Daniel aims through the window of the car and shoots one of Badger's men through the chest. He falls to the ground as they shoot at the car. The group fires back the group as they shoot at them from behind cars and buildings. Strand shoots Max through the leg, making the man fall to the ground as Nick and Sherry shoot two men in the eye. One of them panicked and tried to run only to be hit by a throwing knife through the neck, Arthur slinking behind Nick and Sherry.

"Pull back!" Badger shouts.

"Badger, don't leave me, man!" Max shouts in panic

"Leave him," Badger says as the group runs, making a beeline down the street

"Don't chase them!" Jesus ordered Strand and Cole. "Get him up!" He tells them as he looks at where Max was. "Tie him up," Strand and Cole walk over to him as Clementine walks over to Kenny and falls on her knees. She turns him onto his back and stares at him, no words, no goodbyes he was just gone. She lays her head on his chest as she starts to cry. Daniel grabs David and pushes him up against the car, holding a gun under his chin with a feral look in his eyes.

"Hey!" Javi shouts, but Carl points his gun at him.

"I should kill you, you son of a bitch! You lured us to a trap!?" Daniel growls.

"I didn't do this!" David gritted his teeth, remaining calm. "I had nothing to do with this. Badger listens to Joan, not me!" David shouts at him. "I'm sorry about your friend, but it is only a matter of time before she sends more men after us. We can't stay here we have to move."

"We're not leaving him," Jesus says as he looks at Kenny's body. He walks over to Clementine and bends down. "We gotta go, Clem. We won't leave him here. I'll carry him back by myself if I have to. But if we stay here, they'll come back and pick us off one by one, and Kenny dying will mean nothing. We have to get back, tell them what happened. It's what he would have wanted," Jesus says softly to Clementine, who nods as she wipes the tears away and stands up. Patting her arm, he pulls off Kenny's hat and hands it out to her. He grabs Kenny by his arms and throws him over his shoulder.

"Will she make it to Alexandria?" Negan then asks as he looks at the woman Javi was holding.

"How far is that?" The man asks.

"At least a days walk. Tobias can look at her when we are far enough away. Let's get moving," Jesus says as they enter the woods with Strand and Cole making Max follow them.

Charlie's P.O.V

Charlie walks beside Clementine. "I'm sorry about Kenny," Charlie says softly.

"Thanks," Clementine says blankly, unbelieving clearly that her oldest friend was gone.

"I'm here if you need a friend," Charlie tells her as she lays her hand on Clementine's shoulder. Clementine looks at Charlie and gives her a grateful smile. "We're going to kill them."

"I know," Clementine tells her darkly. "First, we have to get him home to Lilly and A.J."

"We will," Charlie reassures her.

Carl's P.O.V

Carl looked at Jesus as he walked up to him, seeing his grim face "You know this isn't your fault, right?" Carl asks Jesus, causing him to turn to look at the young man. "You couldn't have known they would do this. Neither of us could of."

"Do you think it was all three of them?" Jesus asks him.

"No, I don't. I was listening to Conrad and Tripp. They were attacked by Badger too. They lost a community, named Prescott. I think one or more of them is sending Badger and his men after communities. Once we get back to the communities, we'll hand Max over to Daryl and let him get information out of him."

"Shouldn't we let Daniel do it?" Jesus asks.

"Daryl can do it. He's done it before. And we can't stay out in the open." Carl tells him. Jesus turns his head and looks at Clementine.

"I'm worried about her."

"She just lost her closest friend. She's known him since the start, and now he's dead. I know what it feels like to lose a person you've known for so long." Carl tells Jesus. "Glenn was always there for me. From the start, he always helped my Mom and me if we needed it. She'll be okay, but she needs some time by herself."

Jesus nods as they continue to walk.

Joan's P.O.V

Joan, Clinton, and Paul looked at Badger as he walked into the church. "What happened?" Joan asks.

"They attacked us. We did as you said, Joan. I took them a map that would show them how to get here quicker, and they shot at us as we got close. Took Max and David hostage and killed four of my men," Badger says. "I tried to help Max, but he told me to run."

"I don't understand. They seemed like good people," Paul says, confused.

"A lie to make us drop our guard, and now they have taken David and Max and killed our people." Joan says firmly. "We must retaliate."

"Gather the men, Badger. You will start to look for their communities two days from now. Tomorrow we will hold a memorial for our fallen comrades," Clinton says.

Badger nods as he leaves the church. "Our main goal is to retrieve David and Max." Paul says.

"Of course," Joan agrees. "But they must pay for what they did."

"And they will, but first, we must make sure David and Max are safe. Our people always come first, Joan," Clinton says.

"I will make sure Badger and his men know that," Joan says. "We will save our people, gentlemen."

David's P.O.V

That night the group set up camp. Strand, Cole, Sherry, and Nick were on watch. David pats Gabe's shoulder as Tobias looks at Kate. He stands up and walks over to Javier. "What happened to Mari?" David asks his estranged brother.

"She was killed. Murdered by the same people who killed Kenny and attacked these people." Javier tells him. "Badger shot her through the head, and then Badger and Max attacked Prescott," David walks toward Max and grabs for his knife, but Negan grabs his arm.

"Sorry, the asshole deserves to die, that we agree on but not yet. Not until we get every piece of information we got out of his spineless body," Negan tells him.

"He helped kill my daughter." David growls.

"Sorry about your daughter, but he helped kill our friend, and unless we learn what he knows, more people could die, including my friend's kids, and I'll break both of your arms before I let you put them in danger," Negan growls. "Understood?"

"Understood." David growls as he pulls his arm out of Negan's hand, the two glaring at each other for a moment, and walks over to Gabe and Kate.

Clementine's P.O.V

Clementine sat by Kenny's body. They had covered it up with a blanket. She held his hat in her hand and looked at Laura as she walked over to her and sat down. "I know what you're feeling right now. I watched my Dad die."

"Kenny wasn't my Dad," She responded, not looking up from Kenny's hat.

"No, he wasn't, but he was the closest thing you had to one." Laura says. "And you loved him like a daughter would love her father, and he loved you like a father would his daughter."

"How'd you heal?" Clementine asks.

"I didn't." At Clementine's face, Laura's face fell "I lost myself a long time after he died, helped hurt others in the Saviors...but in time I leaned onto the people close to me. Mainly Negan, but he helped me, and you have more people than I do. A.J. and Lilly are going to need you. You help them and yourself, and I promise you that you will be the one to kill Badger. You'll be the one to avenge Kenny." Laura tells her softly. "it won't be today, it won't be tomorrow, but you will kill him."

"I'm going to give this to A.J. So he can always remember Kenny," Clementine tells her. Laura nods as she pulls Kenny's gun out. She holds it out to her.

"Jesus grabbed it off him. Said I should give it to you," Laura says as Clementine takes the gun.

"...Thank you."

Daniel's P.O.V

Daniel stood on watch late at night and looked at Negan as he walked up to him. "You were right, don't fucking say I told you so" Negan says.

"I wish I wasn't." Daniel says as he glances at the body. "He was a good man, delivered supplies to the community. Things got done quicker because of Kenny."

"You trust David?" Negan asks.

"No, do you?" Daniel asks Negan, who shakes his head. "They could have taken him out very easily. But they hit Kenny instead. He says he had nothing to do with this, but I don't believe him."

"We'll keep an eye on him, and if he tries anything, we'll do the same thing to him Daryl is going to do to Max."

"I'll get the info. Daryl doesn't need to dirty his hands. I would be glad to get the info out of him." Daniel says as he stares at Max.

"Then you'll do it when we get home."

Maggie's P.O.V

Two days later

Maggie was sitting in her room with Hershel when the door opened. She looks at Marco. "They're back, Maggie. They have a body," Marco tells Maggie.

"Grab him," Maggie tells Marco as she leaves the room immediately and goes outside of Barrington house. The gates open, and Carl and Jesus walk in, followed by the others. Maggie saw Al and smiled, but her smile fell when she saw Strand and Daniel carrying a man-made stretcher.

"Who is that?" Tara asks.

"It's Kenny." Strand says sadly

"What? How did this happen!?" Beth asks.

"We thought it went well. We made a deal, and they sent David back with us to look at the communities. We ran into his family, and...they ambushed us. Shot Kenny in the back of the head," Jesus says. "We caught one of them. Daniel is going to take him back to the campgrounds and find out what he can. We killed some of them too. The ambush was just the start of all of this. They're going to come back, and they're going to try and take what we have. Kill who we love, but we won't let that happen. We're going to war."

Thanks for reading. So Kenny is the one who died, and he is the first major character death since this story started. Sure there was Jed and Beatrice, but he was the first big one. There have been 76 of these chapters. 91 if you count one choice, so people are going to die in this arc, and the next arc is the Whisper arc, and we all know what happens there.
