Jergen was pushed, at spearpoint, down the trail leading to the encampment he was previously watching from above. They didn't stop at the mouth of the cave, though. They forced him to walk all the way into the cave. They herded him through a small entry area and made him wait against a wall near the back of the cave. One stood guard over him while the other strode off to fetch someone.
These poor souls really must have been through something terrible. They've never treated me like this before, Jergen observed. He looked around the cave. It was one large room with a small portion of Ylwa's family, once almost family to him as well, scattered around. Some of them were taking care of regular tasks, such as cooking and crafting. Others seemed to be huddled around whispering or just staring off into the distance. The entire atmosphere was filled with an almost reverential hush that was not present before. Ylwa… Farkas… Vilkas… Jergen thought as he began searching those gathered for each one. There's Farkas, and I can smell Vilkas somewhere around as well. He felt himself begin to breathe again, and realized that it was the first time that he had breathed easily since he discovered the campsite a few days ago. I wonder where Ylwa is. She usually isn't far from the pups.
Before he has time to ponder the question further, though, Rezso came stalking towards Jergen.
"What are you doing here?" he demanded. "And how did you find us?"
"I am here to see Ylwa, Farkas, and Vilkas, and I found you by following my instinct." Jergen replied.
"So I assume you discovered what happened at our camp." Rezso said gruffly.
"It looked like there was a fight of some sort, and it was abandoned in a hurry."
"That's right." he said. "And we have no place for deserters who should have been there to fight with us."
"I'm just here to see the pups and Ylwa." Jergen replied, turning towards where he had seen Farkas playing a few minutes before. He walked off in that direction, but after walking a few steps and hearing nothing but silence from Rezso, he turned back around.
"Ylwa's dead." Rezso said gravely.
"Ylwa is dead?" Jergen asked, his voice laced with confusion and a mixture of sadness and relief. He didn't really have anything against Ylwa particularly, but if she was gone, that means that the pups were his to take home to Jorrvaskr.
"That's what I said." Rezso responded, coldly. "She died defending our pack from attackers."
"I see." Jergen replied, attempting to keep his voice serious, despite the glee that he felt in his heart at knowing that he could finally take his sons home with him. He took a few steps further, and then turned and said to Rezso, "I am sorry about what your pack has gone through. I wish there was something I could have done to help." Good! Formalities given. Now to take my boys home! Jergen hurried over to where Farkas and Vilkas were playing. Farkas immediately ran over to him and threw himself into Jergen's outstretched arms. Vilkas hesitated, and then, with no mother to hide behind, followed Farkas's example and cautiously approached his father. Jergen just grinned at him, waiting, with Farkas in one arm, the other still stretched out to lift Vilkas when he felt comfortable getting close enough. Soon Vilkas did allow Jergen to cautiously lift him up. He gave them both a big hug, grinned at them, and headed towards the mouth of the cave.
"Where are you going with them?" Rezso shouted from where he was still watching Jergen from across the cave.
"I am taking them home." Jergen replied.
"They are home." Rezso growled.
"Their home is with me at Jorrvaskr." Jergen replied confidently.
"Their home is right here, where their mother wanted them to be. They are a part of this pack, and we need them now more than ever." Rezso said, motioning at the meager numbers before them.
"I don't care how much you need them. They are my sons, and I am going to raise them." Jergen said roughly.
"Are you challenging me?" Rezso snarled at Jergen, teeth bared.
"Yes I am. What are you going to do about it?" Any of those in the cave who had not already stopped what they were doing to listen to the argument between Jergen and Rezso now did so.
"We will settle this one-on-one, with tooth and claw, the way I would for anyone who challenges my authority." Rezso replied.
Jergen gingerly sat Farkas and Vilkas down on the floor and walked a few steps away, towards Rezso. "You just try!" Jergen proclaimed.
Rezso quickly began to transform into his wolf form. Jergen followed suit, relieved that he did not use his transformation while traveling that evening. Almost faster than Jergen could react, Rezso lunged at Jergen's throat. Jergen, who before that moment was hesitant to actually fight over something that he was so clearly in the right about, dropped all hesitations and threw himself into this fight with Rezso. He used the opportunity Rezso's missed throat lunge provided to leap onto Rezso's back and begin tearing into flesh with his teeth and his claws. There was not much damage he could do in that area, but any little bit would help. By the time Jergen was thrown off, Rezso had a shredded left side of his back and left shoulder.
Rezso had thrown Jergen to the ground with such force that he was not immediately upon his feet. As he began to scramble back up, Rezso jumped in for another throat lunge. Jergen swiped him away with a solid slash of claws to the face.
At this point, after having seen that Rezso really did mean business, Jergen's objective become killing, rather than maiming. While Rezso was staggering from the blow that Jergen had dealt to his face, Jergen leapt upon Rezso, using his superior size to knock Rezso to the ground. He grabbed for Rezso's throat, but instead ended up with a mouthful of face. He heard a crunch as he clamped down on what turned out to be Rezso's jawbone. He felt Rezso cringe and squirm to escape his grasp. He used Rezso's slight struggling simply to escape as an opportunity to deal a bit of further damage. He took both of his paws and dealt a quick THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! to Rezso's chest, leaving deep claw marks in the wake of each thwack. By the time he was done with his thwacks, Rezso had scrambled free, and quickly grabbed and tore off a chunk of flesh from Jergen's abdomen. Jergen let out a roar of pain and stumbled back a bit. As he looked at Rezso, panting and dripping with blood, Jergen saw that, while he was busy chewing on Rezso's jaw, he had not even noticed that one of his upper teeth had sunken into an eye socket and destroyed Rezso's right eye. Even if he does survive this battle, he will never forget me. Jergen thought, and then jumped out of the way… to Rezso's blinded right side… as Rezso charged him again. Jergen got great amusement out of the new handicap he had given Rezso and decided to tease him a bit further before getting serious again. Rezso turned, and Jergen again jumped to Rezso's right, vanishing from his vision. The third time Jergen tried that trick, though, Rezso was prepared and whirled to his right after charging. Jergen was also ready to end his little game and, while Rezso was still whirling, Jergen leapt for his right side, hoping that he could latch on in such a place that Rezso would not be able to see him. He ended up grabbing right above and below Rezso's hip, and when Jergen felt bone between his teeth, he began jerking and shaking the bone as hard as he could. While Jergen was working on Rezso's hip, Rezso managed to grab ahold of Jergen's right rear leg and began shredding the muscles found there. Jergen knew that he would have to end things quickly at this point, because he wouldn't be much good with a bad leg. He let go of his grip on Rezso's hip in order to quickly grab at his spine. He grabbed spine and muscle between his teeth. Rezso could feel that he was in a bad spot, and immediately redirected all of his attention to getting Jergen away from such a vital area. Jergen had clamped down hard, though. He was doubting whether he would be able to get to the spine because of all of the muscle in between his upper and lower teeth. As Rezso was about to attempt to scrape Jergen off on the ground, Jergen took his claws and raked them deeply across Rezso's exposed abdomen. Not quite deeply enough to spill Rezso's guts, but it must have been close, as he paused and tried to cease all motion. Jergen then jumped, teeth exposed ferociously, for Rezso's throat. He hesitated, with his mouth around Rezso's windpipe, as if asking for a surrender. He received a feeble swat at the side of his head in response and ended it all with one quick rip.
As Rezso layed on the ground on front of Jergen, a few last squirts of blood gushing out of the cavity that Jergen had made in his throat, Jergen looked up and saw the nearest male, one of the guards who had escorted him in, in a submissive gesture. He looked around, and all of the rest of the pack, one by one, lowered themselves to the ground submissively. Jergen learned something that moment about werewolf society – a ritual that the Companions had never had any need for. If one challenges the leader of the pack and then kills him in battle, that one becomes the new leader of said pack.
Jergen just stared at them all for a bit, and then turned to grab Farkas and Vilkas, but quickly realized that carrying them away while he was still in his beast form just wasn't going to work. He assumed that all of their postulating meant that they were submitting to his rule, but didn't want to stick around to find out. He just wanted to take his pups and go home to Jorrvaskr – to the Companions. Well, at least no one seemed hostile towards him any more. Each one seemed either fearful or respectful. He supposed this would be a safe place to rest while he waited out the rest of his transformation. Maybe someone could help heal up his leg a bit, too. He found the area of the cave where Rezso had been staying and placed himself there, figuring that it couldn't hurt to play along with them for a little bit.
Jergen spent the next day resting and healing. With the assistance of some healing potions, he felt recovered enough to travel the next evening. So as soon as the sun began to set, he gathered up Farkas and Vilkas and began to leave the cave. Several of the pack members confronted him at the door and told him that since he had slain the former leader, that put him in the position of new leader. They tried several tactics to convince him to stay and lead them to greater accomplishments than they had known in their lifetime, but Jergen refused every offer and suggestion that they made. And so Jergen took Farkas and Vilkas back home to Whiterun to raise them in Jorrvaskr with the Companions.
