Chapter 7: Overseas

Shinjuku Station, Tokyo, Japan

2:00 PM

For the readers who have no idea what Shinjuku Station looks like, go on google earth and check out the Shinjuku Station streetview, where the Statue of Sucia penguin is.

The honks of car horns and the rattling of the railroads could be heard around Shinjuku Station. At the south exit, a man concealed by a hood, wearing a dark navy combat hoodie and matching tactical pants with beige straps running diagonally across his torso, stood in the square, staring at the large green "SHINJUKU STATION" sign. Citizens flooded the Sicua Penguin Square, taking pictures with the bronze penguin statue. The man, with his hands in his pockets, entered the station and headed for the green fare gates. Once there, he took his right hand out and placed a white card on the scanner. The gates swung open, and he passed through, walking by the cafes straight toward the elevator and descending into the trainyard.

As the elevator reached the platform, the doors swung open, and the man stepped out. He walked down the Shonan-Shinjuku Line platform and stopped near the end. He looked to his left, then his right, and suddenly jumped down to the train tracks. Bystanders gasped in horror, thinking he had leaped to his death, but the man kept moving. He made his way down the railway, stopping about 190 meters from where he had jumped. He looks around, and takes a deep breath. The man removed his hands from his pockets and placed his fingers on the zipper of his jacket. He unzipped the jacket completely, shrugged it off, and threw it aside, revealing Yuji Itadori's pink-blonde hair.

(Dont look down! Spoilers!): "O-kay, so this is where you're hiding?"

Yuji knelt down and placed his hands on the ground. His palms flared with cursed energy, as scissors began tracing dashed lines across the ground in a giant spider-web pattern. Suddenly, the ground exploded into thousands of pieces, with debris and steel from the railroads flying everywhere. Yuji was flung back from the blast, and from the newly excavated ground emerged a worm-like cursed spirit, 13 meters long and 2 meters tall, diving straight toward him with razor-sharp teeth bared.

Yuji landed on his feet and slammed his fist into his palm, cracking his knuckles. As the worm lunged at him, he reeled his fist back and punched forward, imbuing the strike with cursed energy. Black and red sparks erupted in all directions, transforming into lightning as Yuji's fist connected with the worm's mouth, sending it flying backward, injured. Without missing a beat, Yuji ran up to the worm and delivered a powerful roundhouse kick to its midsection, causing it to crash into the wall.

The wall was splattered with purple goo where the worm hit, and the creature lay motionless on the ground. Yuji approached it cautiously, squatting down to observe. The stench of raw sewage assaulted his nose, causing him to back away in disgust.

Yuji, pinching his nose: "Blegh! The hell have you been eating?"

Still pinching his nose and tilting his head back to avoid the smell, Yuji placed his hand on the worm's stomach and used Cleave to make a sizable incision. The cursed scissors sliced a perfect line along its abdomen, about a meter long. As the worm's insides spilled out, Yuji grimaced at the twisted jumble of metal and electronics inside—pieces of copper, steel, and wires tangled together. The sight confirmed his suspicions and highlighted the severity of the problem. He let out a weary sigh and ran a hand through his pink-blonde hair. Raising his hand to his ear, he pressed into the earpiece he was wearing.

Yuji, excited: "Hey, Fushiguro, guess what!"

An obscured voice muttered through the earpiece.

Yuji: "I was right! The power outages were caused by these worms eating away at the underground lines! You owe me 500 yen now!"

Yuji, frustrated: "What do you mean, 'nuh-uh'? We had a deal!"

Yuji: "I dont know what you're talking about, there was only one of the-"

Before Yuji can finish, the ground begins to rumble, much like a weak earthquake. The rumbling grows louder and louder, and Yuji begins franticly looking around to spot the source of the sound. As the ground rumbled beneath him, Yuji's eyes widened at the sight of multiple massive worms bursting forth.

Yuji, shouting: "OH CRAP!"

Adrenaline surged through him as he sprinted back up the tracks, glancing over his shoulder at the grotesque creatures closing in. Suddenly, a familiar screech echoed above the trainyard. Yuji squinted upwards, shielding his eyes from the glaring sun. A grin spread across his face as he recognized the colossal Nue descending rapidly. Right on time, Megumi, he thought.

Nue crashed onto the tracks with a thunderous impact, electricity crackling along its expansive wingspan. The worms convulsed under the onslaught of purple lightning, their shrieks piercing the air before fading into silence, smoke rising from their charred remains. Megumi Fushiguro slid down Nue's feathers with practiced ease. His once-youthful features had sharpened, and his eyes carried the weight of countless battles. As the two met, Megumi smiled smugly.

Megumi: "Still getting yourself into trouble? Once a moron, always a moron."

Yuji laughed, rubbing the back of his neck.

Yuji: "What can I say? Trouble finds me."

Megumi: "Maybe if you didn't dive headfirst into every situation, we wouldn't have to clean up so often."

Yuji: "Hey, I had it under control."

Megumi: "Sure you did."

Megumi paused for a moment.

Megumi: "Gakuganji summoned us. It's about Shin."

Yuji's expression shifted to one of genuine interest.

Yuji: "Shin's arriving today? Finally! I've been looking forward to meeting him."

Megumi: "He should be at the school soon. We need to get back."

Yuji glanced at the charred remains of the worms.

Yuji: "Guess our work here is done. Race you back?"

Megumi, frustration growing: "Just get on the bird..."

As Yuji sprinted toward Nue, excitement thrummed through him. The massive shikigami stood ready, its brilliant orange feathers shimmering in the sunlight. Behind him, Megumi walked calmly, hands in his pockets. They climbed onto Nue's back—Yuji sprawling comfortably while Megumi took his place at the front. With a gentle tug, Megumi signaled Nue, who unfurled its wings and began to beat them powerfully, stirring gusts that scattered debris below. Ascending gracefully, Nue carried them into the sky, the wind whipping through their hair as the cityscape unfolded beneath them.

Meanwhile, thousands of feet above, on United Airlines Flight 52, Shin and Principal Shaw sat side by side in economy. Principal Shaw was fast asleep, wearing the same white shirt and black joggers from the previous day. Shin, wide awake, had his white earbuds in, listening to "Careless Whisper" by George Michael. He sat with his arms crossed, trying to beat the freezing cold of the airplane. The window shade was rolled down halfway, and after 20 straight hours of travel, they were close to landing. Shin tapped Principal Shaw on the shoulder, waking him up.

Principal Shaw: "Hmmmmm, how much longer until we land?"

Shin, exhausted: "I dunno... 20-30 minutes?"

Principal Shaw: "You sound dead, Shin. Did you sleep?"

Shin shook his head no.

Principal Shaw: "Didn't I tell you to go to sleep? Now you're gonna pay the price."

Shin, sarcastically: "So scary."

Principal Shaw shook his head in disapproval. He looked in front of him and saw that his breakfast was on the tray table. It was just bread, butter, and some yogurt. Inside the breakfast tray was a neatly folded napkin with a phone number scribbled on it, alongside a kiss mark made of lipstick. Principal Shaw crumpled up the napkin and put it in the pouch in front of him. Shin stared at him as he did this.

Shin: "You're not going to go for that?"

Principal Shaw: "Why would I? I'd never date a flight attendant."

Shin: "And why is that?"

Principal Shaw: "I'd never see her again. Plus... none of the attendants here are my type."

They chuckled as the airplane began its final descent. They strapped in their seatbelts and brought their seats upright. Principal Shaw ate his breakfast while Shin stared out the window at the bright Tokyo skyline. The plane rattled as it neared the runway, and Shin tightly gripped the armrests. This was his first time on a plane—Principal Shaw had never allowed him to leave Florida before. Eventually, the plane landed, the hull shaking as it touched down. After taxiing for a while, the jet bridge connected to the airport, and passengers were allowed to disembark.

Stepping off the aircraft, Shin and Principal Shaw made their way across the jet bridge. The cool, conditioned air was a welcome relief after the long flight. As they entered the bustling terminal, Shin's eyes widened. He paused mid-step, overwhelmed by the sights and sounds around him.

The airport was unlike anything he'd seen before. Bright signs in both Japanese and English flickered above, advertising everything from advanced electronics to exotic snack flavors. Conversations in multiple languages filled the air, punctuated by the melodic jingles of announcements over the loudspeakers.

Shin gazed around, his senses inundated. The terminal sprawled before him like a vibrant maze. Restaurants built with Kumiki, a traditional Japanese building technique, caught his eye, their intricate designs interlocking without a single nail or screw. The aroma of freshly made sushi and simmering ramen wafted toward him, making his stomach rumble. Vendors cheerfully called out to passersby, inviting them to sample their delicacies.

So this is Japan... Shin thought, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling in his chest. Compared to the familiar airports back home in Orlando, this place felt like a completely different world. Everything pulsed with energy—from the animated crowds to the flashing digital billboards displaying a variety of advertisements.

Shin looks ahead, seeing that Principal Shaw was already several meters ahead of him.

Principal Shaw: "Shin, keep up."

Shin: "Right, sorry."

They walked through the terminal, but Shin couldn't help glancing back and forth, trying to take in every detail—the sleek robots assisting travelers, the art installations depicting scenes from Japanese history, and even the mesmerizing patterns of the floor tiles.

The two made their way to baggage claim. After ten minutes, Principal Shaw's black RIMOWA 'Check-In M' bag arrived. He grabbed it and began walking toward the taxi pickup, but Shin looked at him in confusion and stopped.

Shin, confused: "What the hell? Where's my bag?"

Principal Shaw: "I told you not to worry about it, didn't I?"

Shin: "Yeah, I thought you packed for me!"

Principal Shaw: "Hush, Shin. It will make sense later."

Shin rolled his eyes, and Principal Shaw gave him a stern look. They made their way to the passenger pickup area, where families were holding signs and flowers to welcome loved ones. Among them, a man with mid-length black hair parted down the middle, wearing rectangular glasses and a black suit with a red tie, was waiting with an electronic sign that read: "CAMERON SHAW, SHIN COLLINS." Principal Shaw spotted him and began walking over. Shin noticed the silver nametag pinned on the man's chest, took a closer look, and read the kanji. It said, "KIYOTAKA IJICHI."

Principal Shaw: "Shin, this is Kiyotaka Ijichi, the director of Tokyo Jujutsu High."

Ijichi: "It's good to finally meet you, Mister Collins. I'm looking forward to offering what we have."

Ijichi extended his hand with a welcoming smile. Shin hesitated for a moment, an uncomfortable expression crossing his face.

Ijichi: "No need to worry, I won't bite."

Shin shook his hand, warming up to Ijichi. The three of them walked to the parking lot, where they approached Ijichi's car, a white 2016 Lexus GS. Principal Shaw opened the trunk and placed his luggage inside. They got into the car—Ijichi and Shaw in the front, and Shin in the back. Strangely, a bouquet of dandelions lay on the passenger seat. Principal Shaw picked them up and placed the flowers on his lap. Ijichi started the car and drove toward the Tamagawa Sky Bridge, exiting into the Kawasaki Prefecture. As they drove through the bustling streets of Kawasaki, Shin gazed out the window, absorbing the sights. The towering buildings and neon signs were so different from Orlando. A mix of excitement and apprehension churned within him.

Ijichi: "Shin, I want to thank you personally for choosing to come here. I understand you've had an encounter with Rogin. Can you elaborate on what you two talked about?"

Shin hesitated for a moment, recalling the unsettling encounter. He clenched his hands slightly, the memory still vivid.

Shin: "Oh... well, he told me he knows I'm struggling to make my own destiny and that he could free me from that burden or something. He specifically called me 'Bearer of the Six Eyes.'"

Ijichi, adjusting his glasses: "Yes... I see. Did he try to offer you a deal?"

Shin: "Yeah, he wanted me to betray my clan and join him to restore the world or something."

Ijichi: "Did you accept?"

Shin, firmly: "Of course not."

Ijichi: "Good, good. And after that, what happened?"

Shin swallowed, the haunting images flashing in his mind.

Shin: "After I refused, he showed me a vision of Orlando in flames, completely destroyed. It really shook me up."

Principal Shaw: "I'm sorry you had to see that, Shin."

Ijichi: "And after that, you woke up in that alley?"

Shin: "Mhm."

Ijichi: "We still know very little about Rogin's cursed technique. All we know is that Kenjaku reincarnated him prior to the Shibuya incident as a contingency plan for you. Why Kenjaku didn't try to convert you himself is perplexing. Why have Rogin do it? He managed to charm the president of the United States during the Culling Games, so that can't be the issue. What is Rogin planning..."

The conversation ended there, and Ijichi continued driving, heading toward the mountains outside Tokyo. Two hours and thirty minutes later, they arrived at the Mount Mushiro Foothills. Ijichi parked his car on the side of the road. The three of them exited, with the bouquet of flowers still in Principal Shaw's hands, and began ascending the steps. As they climbed, Ijichi briefed Shin.

Ijichi: "Mister Collins, when we arrive at the school, you have a meeting with Yoshinobu Gakuganji, the head of Jujutsu HQ. He'll give you the details of your stay here and our plans to stop whatever Rogin is up to. As of now, you're a first-year student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. I must warn you, though, Gakuganji-sama can be... difficult, so try to go easy on him."

Shin: "Why is Gakuganji-sama 'a piece of work,' Mr. Ijichi?"

Ijichi: "Well, when your fath—"

Principal Shaw nudged Ijichi with his shoulder, giving him a cold look. Ijichi fell silent, while Shin observed this exchange and formed a frustrated expression. They reached the summit and stopped at the school entrance, marked by a large red torii. Shin passed through it, feeling his confidence in his destiny grow with each step.

They walked through the main plaza and stopped in the center.

Ijichi: "The headquarters office is down this road, Shin. Please make your way there."

Shin nodded and began walking in the direction Ijichi indicated, leaving him and Principal Shaw alone. The sun was beginning to set, casting an orange glow on the school grounds. Ijichi turned to Principal Shaw and looked at the flowers in his hands, then up at Shaw with a sad expression.

Ijichi: "Take all the time you need. I'll go prepare Shin's dormitory."

Ijichi walked away, heading in the opposite direction from where Shin had gone. Principal Shaw stood still for a moment, gazing down at the bouquet of dandelions cradled in his hands. The delicate petals trembled slightly in the evening breeze. Taking a deep breath, he began walking down a secluded, winding path that branched away from the main grounds. The path was lined with ancient cherry blossom trees, their leaves whispering softly overhead. The fading sunlight cast long shadows, and the air was filled with the faint scent of moss and earth.

As he walked, the distant sounds of the school faded, replaced by the quiet rustling of leaves and the rhythmic crunch of gravel underfoot. He approached a sprawling field where rows of weathered tombstones stood tall. Entering the cemetery, he felt a familiar heaviness settle in his chest. He passed by graves marked with the names of fallen sorcerers. His footsteps slowed as he neared a particular tombstone near the back of the field. The letters on the golden nameplate were obscured by the warm glow of the setting sun. A deeply saddened expression formed on Principal Shaw's face as he stood before the tombstone. The weight of unspoken words pressed upon him. He knelt down slowly, his knees settling into the soft earth, and placed a trembling hand on the cold granite. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring his vision. In a voice barely above a whisper, he spoke in English, the words catching in his throat.

Cameron, choking up: "Hey... it's been a while."

He paused, swallowing hard as he tried to steady himself.

Cameron: "I know we had a bet that I'd be the first to go, but I guess things don't work out the way we think..."

A faint, bittersweet smile tugged at his lips.

Cameron: "Man, you would be so proud of Shin. He's doing so well. Here I was thinking I'd have to force him to come here, but he came willingly! He's just like his father... minus the ego."

He chuckled softly, but the sound was laced with sorrow. A sharp inhale caused his chest to tighten, and he wiped away a tear with the back of his fist, his hand lingering for a moment as if to hold back the flood of emotions threatening to overwhelm him.

Cameron: "I brought you a gift. Picked these because I know they're your least favorite... ha ha."

He gently laid the bouquet of dandelions at the base of the tombstone, the bright yellow flowers standing in contrast to the somber surroundings. Among the other offerings—white lilies, incense sticks, folded cranes—the dandelions seemed almost out of place, yet profoundly personal.

He gazed at the flowers for a moment, memories washing over him like a tide—shared laughter, late-night discussions, the camaraderie forged through years of trials and triumphs.

Cameron: "See you later, old friend..."

His voice broke on the last word. Standing up slowly, he took a deep, shaky breath. As he turned to leave, tears spilled freely down his cheeks, falling onto the gravel path like silent raindrops. The sun was dipping below the mountains, casting a fiery glow that stretched his shadow long and thin behind him.

The cemetery grew quiet once more, only sounds of the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant call of a bird can be heard. The bouquet of dandelions swayed gently in the breeze, a humble tribute to a cherished friend.

As his figure receded, the letters on the golden nameplate became clear in the fading light:

"YAGA MASAMICHI"
