Chapter 11: Love Conquers All
Debris contained within an aura of blue quickly had its atomic structure reorganized as Michael reshaped the pile of remains into a suitable wall that promptly stitched together another building. The damaged floating city of Zamaros was taking shape after Doomsday's rampage and, with Michael boosting the power of the Star Sapphires, they were making great progress with the restoration.
"Tower two is back to normal." He said aloud.
"That is good. Zamaros will be back to its former glory in no time at all." Nadia replied.
"Blue Lantern Michael, we require some assistance!" Miss Bloss called from a nearby statue. Michael flew over to assess the situation. "The lower foundations are starting to show previously-unnoticed structural damage. Can you fortify it while we restore the head?"
"Of course." Dropping to the ground, Michael's ring generated a perfect cast that wrapped around the feet of the statue, its aura organizing the atomic structure into a more stable configuration while the statue's restored head added its own weight.
"Good. Very good." Miss Bloss praised while she and another Star Sapphire held the statue's head in place with their rings while a third generated a welding laser from hers to fuse the broken piece back into place. Soon enough the statue was whole again, requiring only its weapons in order to appear 100%. "Excellent work. Thank you for your assistance, Blue Lantern Michael."
"My pleasure." He replied with a nod.
"Would you… mind checking on the Queen? She is down in the crystal fields, tending to our fallen sisters." Miss Bloss requested. Michael nodded again and took flight, arcing high away from the city before diving low towards the surface of the planet. The sun sparkled brilliantly off the mosaic of pink crystals naturally growing from Zamaron, creating a dazzling display as Michael flew over them. Dipping lower as he spied a regimen of Zamarons among the crystals, he alighted before the Queen as she finished using her body to seal a Star Sapphire within a large crystalline structure. "Queen Aga'po. I presume you fair well?"
"As well as any queen may in the aftermath of an assault on her home and people." Aga'po answered.
"I understand," Michael said softly, "I am confident that, in time, all will be well again."
The Queen smiled. "Your hope is a great boon to us all." She made a gesture and the Zamarons began moving the pink crystalline structures away, every one of them continuing the silhouette of a Star Sapphire within. "Some of the more grievously injured we managed to stabilize and place within healing crystals. In time they will emerge renewed. Those who have fallen will be buried with honor and their rings will seek out worthy replacements to join our ranks."
"I'm only sorry more couldn't be saved." Michael proffered.
"There was only so much any of us could do. We will mourn their losses but we will also lift our spirits knowing their sacrifice was not in vain." Aga'po replied. She laid a hand upon his shoulder. "This is still a victory, Michael, and you should take heart in that." The Blue Lantern nodded in acceptance. "Furthermore, your aid has been invaluable. We have made great strides in restoring the glory of our home, no small thanks to your boosting our abilities."
"As a 'friend of Zamaron' I figured I had better play an active role. Far be it from me to let you down, Queen Aga'po." Michael responded. The Queen's smile persisted and she looked at him thoughtfully.
"I can see now that you are indeed worthy of my niece." She noted quietly. "We will rest for today and resume the work tomorrow. I would encourage you to seek out Ghia'ta. She has been eager to talk to you."
"Yes, I know. She hasn't said what about." Michael replied.
"I saw her last near the central battery, perhaps she will reveal her intentions today." Said Aga'po. "Thank you again for your help, Michael." The Blue Lantern bowed to the queen before he took his leave, shooting back up through the air over the crystal plains before he made a beeline for the central battery. Given its sheer size and the near-constant glow from the violet light, the massive structure was not hard to miss. Like a compass of the heart, his ring sought out Ghia'ta's biometrics and guided him to her, the princess standing adjacent to the central battery. Her eyes turned up to meet his as Michael descended to her side.
"Hi."
"Hi."
"So… your aunt is calling an end to the work for today. You… wanted to talk?"
"Yes. But… not here. Follow me." She invited, taking flight as Michael did likewise. She led him to a small cavern nearby that led under the central battery, the entrance just big enough for Michael step through without having to slouch or bend over. Ghia'ta guided him along until the space opened up and revealed a remarkable sight.
Two skeletal remains, their bones calcified into a gemstone-like material, intertwined and glowing with the violet light. While their bodies were hard to discern, the wing bones branching out from each were most obvious. They radiated with the violet light, filling the room with an otherworldly glow.
"Who were they?" Michael asked, very curious.
"Khu-fu and Chya-ra: the first conduits of the violet light. It was from them that the first queen, Zamar, forged the first Star Sapphire gem… and it is from them that our society was founded. Two soulmates, two hearts so united even their bodies joined together in death, never to be separated as their bones hardened into one another's." Ghia'ta explained. "Love in its purest and truest form."
She turned slowly to face Michael, giving him her full attention. "From them comes our batteries, our light, even our rings. And like our rings, the power they possess is great." Ghia'ta took a breath, brushing some stray lavender hair behind her long pointed ear. "One of the powers of the Star Sapphire ring is the ability to show and locate someone's true love. It reveals who it is to the being in question and then shows them where in the universe they are. I have seen it work over the years so… I trust it." Michael cocked his head, listening intently. "When we first met, my ring reacted to you. In the time it took for you to come and visit Zamaron, I sought out its power to find answers. A Star Sapphire has never had their power ring work on their behalf before. But… it seems I'm the first. My ring… Michael…" she paused, trying to pick out the right words to say, "I love you." She reaffirmed. "I have loved you ever since you forgave me of my past, but I fell for you long before that. The day you came to Zamaron, the time we spent traveling the cosmos, seeing you be yourself in helping the helpless and bringing light to the hopeless, that was when I knew you were different. Special. My ring told me you were my one true love and, at first, I didn't believe it. But… as I watched you, got to know you, helped you… I knew my ring was telling the truth."
Michael was quiet. The silence was tangible. He didn't entirely believe in soulmates. But he did believe in the genuinity seen in Ghia'ta's eyes.
"I-I know how that sounds and, well, it's why I brought you here. I know what I believe but I want you to discover for yourself." Ghia'ta continued. "I want you to go to them. I want you to ask them 'show me my one true love' and I want you to discover for yourself who that person is." She said, gesturing to the entwined skeletons. "I know the violet light can be overwhelming to those who aren't well-versed in its ways… after all, you've experienced that for yourself a few times. So… I want you to commune with it. I want you to meet it on your own terms. Without my influence. I want this to be whole for you, Michael, free from any notion that someone is meddling with the experience or tampering with the outcome."
"Ghia'ta-"
"Michael." She interrupted him. "It's okay. I understand if you might not feel so strongly about me. I'm even prepared to take no for an answer. But… I just want you to experience this. I know about the pain of your broken heart. Maybe this will help fix it a little." The Zamaron opened her mouth as if to say something but then promptly closed it again as she turned to leave. Michael wasn't sure what to say or do but simply watched as Ghia'ta strode out of the cave and disappeared from view.
He turned back to the skeletons, gazing upon them with uncertainty. "Well… this is what being a cultural anthropologist is all about, right Mike? Experiencing new things, adapting to the ways of other peoples… never mind the trials of the heart…" He said to himself, cautiously approaching the entwined remains. Exhaling, he lifted his ring towards them and spoke again,
"Show me… my one true love."
At first, nothing happened, and he had to briefly wonder if Ghia'ta was putting him on. But then the pink glow in the room began to intensify until it consumed his vision and Michael found himself in a dimension comprised entirely of the violet light.
"Michael Ryker of Earth." A voice called out to him, sounding distinctly feminine. "You seek knowledge about your heart… about your destiny." Michael turned, finding himself afloat.
"I… I guess I do." He answered with no small amount of hesitance. The voice spoke again, coming from further away, and Michael moved to pursue it.
"The uncertainty of your words speaks to the state of your heart. You have loved and have been hurt. Your vulnerability exploited by someone not right for you. You question if you can, or even should, love again."
"I-"
"You mask your hurt behind supposed selflessness. You think you are sparing someone else from experiencing your pain." That shut him up instantly. The way this voice spoke to such a deep part of him he had never given voice to was nothing short of shocking. "But you are robbing yourself of what could be."
"Am I?" He asked aloud. He couldn't help it.
"Your pain has resulted in your willful desire to cut yourself off. You are afraid to open your heart to another. While you possess great hope, your fear is holding you back from being whole again." Michael slowed his flight, hovering in place as he wrestled with the words presented to him. "Fear; the imminent sense of failure. Your last relationship failed in such a great fashion that its impact is holding you back." Feeling psychoanalyzed, Michael clutched his head as a presence seemed to invade it. Words, familiar and painful, resurrected all around him,
"I just can't do it anymore, Michael."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Look, it's just not working anymore. Our wants, our needs, they just don't match like they used to. I haven't been true to you but I also haven't been true to myself."
"You haven't been true to anything! Not when you've been with him of all people!"
"Why… Why are you doing this?" Michael demanded. He knew this conversation all too well. He tried to dampen it down as it was from darker days. He was light now, he carried a light to help others. He didn't need this. The voice did not respond to him as things played out.
"What we had, it's just not there. I've been trying to figure out what's been wrong and, with him, I found what I had lost. We had a good run. A good try."
"A good 'run'?! A good 'try'?! Are you insane? Do you hear yourself?"
"Don't make this any harder than it already is."
"You made it this hard!"
Michael closed his eyes and grit his teeth, trying to focus on anything else as his ring flashed with bright blue light.
"There's no other way to say it. I can't do this. I'm living a lie. I don't want to do that and I'm sure you don't want that either."
"Why didn't you just tell me the truth?!"
"When I wasn't sure? When I didn't know any better? Did you really want that?"
"No! I don't want any of this!"
"It's over, okay? I'm sorry, but it is. This place is in my name so, please, pack your stuff and… go back to your parents."
"You can't be serious…"
"I'm sorry, Michael. Really. But it's for the best."
Michael finally lashed out, shooting his ring erratically as blasts of blue disappeared into the violet void. He aimed left and right, spinning around and around, trying to drown out the tormenting words. "Why are you doing this to me?!" He demanded of the voice. "Haven't I gone through enough already? Don't you think I tried to bury that for a reason?"
"I know you did, Michael Ryker. But you need to face your pain one more time so that you can see and heal." Came the reply. "The heart is such a fragile thing. As much as it can be easily hurt, it can also be healed given time. You have not given it such time for you have been afraid of that process."
Out of breath, Michael looked around, feeling exasperated. "See… See what? You said I needed to see and heal. See what?"
"To see what was bad for you and is good for you." New voices arose around him, from conversations far more recent.
"You know, for a human, you're incredibly pleasant to be around. I hope you know that, Michael. From what I've seen, you're a good person."
"I try."
"Don't stop trying. I like that about you. You're kind, considerate, thoughtful… I've met some other human Green Lanterns and, while good in their own right, they don't possess the same gentle spirit you do."
"I think you're the first person to tell me that."
"You should be told that more often, then."
As if he were finally opening his eyes, Michael listened to Ghia'ta's words without the backdrop of his inner turmoil to taint them. How caring she was, how supportive she was, how much she was willing to go out of her way to be there for them. "She's… being loving. As per her corps."
"Do not make excuses." The voice quickly said. "You have always heard with your mind but not your heart. Perform the inverse. Listen and hear with your heart." As it faded away, another conversation sprouted up..
"No matter how much I change my ways or how strongly I believe in my Corps new direction, I'll only ever be known for my past. I only wish you didn't have to find out about it."
"Why?"
"You were… innocent. You didn't know. I wanted to keep it that way! Finally, someone who wouldn't look at me and think of me as the galaxy's biggest slut and now that's all gone to hell! You… being you… you're so nice. You're so calm and careful and gentle. I just… I just hoped that maybe I could really be someone new with you. And now I can't because now you know the truth."
Michael hovered silently. "She's… trying to be someone new. Trying to establish a fresh start. With me."
"Because of who you are." The voice pressed. "Someone worthy of love and affection, someone who's heart empowers their ring. For your hope comes from your heart, your steadfast belief in a better tomorrow is not the choice of your mind but the affirmation of your heart's desire. She sees that in you, Michael, and she desires it."
"I… I thought she was losing control over the violet light and I just wanted to help her."
"A noble gesture. But misplaced. Did you not realize that she forswore sleeping with other men and yet she willingly offered herself to you? Ghia'ta was willing to present her vulnerabilities to you, to step out into unknown territory for the simple sake of pursuing you… for that is love. She gave you your heart and you did not know what to do with it." The realization dawned with the force of a slap across the face and Michael facepalmed.
"So much for being an anthropologist, Mike! Of course other cultures have dedications to love, sex, fertility… I should have realized Zamarons would too!"
"Do not be so hard on yourself. It is not the first time you have been blind to the truth." The voice whispered in a soothing tone. Just before Michael could beat himself up further, another conversation unfolded around him.
"I… did it… because… I love you… Michael. All we've… been through… seeing you put… others first… forgiving… my past… I knew… you were… the one… for me."
"I should have seen it… I should have seen that you were good for me all along. That you were interested in me, invested in me… more than my ex ever was. You were willing to put it all on the line when I was holding back… I'm sorry…"
"She is… She really is…" He whispered, recognizing the truth in his own words. "She taught me what it meant to be the hope of others. She helped me embrace what it meant to be a saint of the universe. She was ready to build me up as best she could when I was at my lowest."
"Would someone so obsessed with finding what was best for them do that? Would someone who hurt you be so ready to help you? Goodness comes from goodness, Michael Ryker, Ghia'ta has learned that and is willing to share it. She has accepted the truth long before you have because she is innately in tune with the violet light. You can be too, if you are willing." The comparison was clear. His ex and Ghia'ta, presented side by side in a such a clear capacity Michael could almost believe this alien voice was human. "You need not be scared to love again when the future is so much brighter than your past. Ghia'ta is for your betterment, Michael Ryker. She has been trying to help you from the start, trying to be your partner and your equal. She has never once been selfish or misguided. Trust her. If you want to know what love is, let her show you." The encouragement was enough for Michael to close his eyes and reflect on everything. Ghia'ta really was leagues better than his ex.
"Is it wrong for me to think we moved too quickly? Is it wrong for me to want to take things slow?" He asked.
"Not at all. But Zamaron culture is different from human culture. They value love above all else. Ghia'ta knows who she loves and has committed herself wholeheartedly. You need only rise to her level in order to be at peace with it."
Michael smiled ruefully. "I'm a terrible anthropologist." He muttered with a chuckle. Despite the self-depreciating joke, he felt a sense of peace come over him at last. Everything seemed to make sense now. The path was clear, no longer hazy.
"Ask again." The voice encouraged him and he knew precisely what it meant.
"Show me my one true love."
His feet found solid ground as the pink around him began to fade. There before him was Ghia'ta's face; soft, beautiful, angelic, his words fell utterly short as his heart beat a little faster.
"Michael?"
He realized he had left the cave and was standing at the entrance where she had been waiting for him. Show me my one true love… The words echoed in his mind and he marvelled at the creativity of the moment. Taking Ghia'ta by the shoulders, her ears perked up at his movements as his eyes beheld her with something new… something she had not seen in him before.
She tried to say his name again, only to be reduced to a surprised squeak when he pressed his lips against hers.
Her ears shot straight up at this brash and sudden move from her, but Ghia'ta swiftly melted into his arms as she returned the embrace. Her limbs encircled him and for several long minutes they held one another in an intimate kiss. When Michael released her, Ghia'ta felt her face go flush as he gazed upon her. "M-Michael?"
"It's you…" he whispered, "you are my one true love. I was too scared to commit… too hurt from the last time I loved." He stroked her face, caressing her cheeks. "Oh Ghia'ta, I'm sorry I've left you hanging for so long." She smiled broadly, her hands settling on his face. "I never meant to make you feel abandoned, or hurt, or ignored-"
Ghia'ta cut in with another kiss. "I forgive you, Michael. I know you've never deliberately tried to hurt me." She hugged him tightly and he returned it. "It's just nice to know that your true love isn't someone else, somewhere else." Michael savoured the embrace, stroking her back as the sensation of her body against his felt so welcoming; like the first ray of light in a room trapped in darkness. To know this feeling, this sensation of having someone special, it made him believe he could begin to truly live again.
To feel again. To love again.
Ghia'ta stepped back and reached for her ring. "What are you doing?" He asked.
"Just to prove that the violet light is not manipulating things, I want to spend time with you just as I am, Michael." Ghia'ta explained. "No powers, no light, nothing else. Just me. Normal, ringless me." She slipped her ring off her finger and her corps garb receded in a flash of pink.
Suddenly realizing she was completely naked, an embarrassed Ghia'ta hurriedly slipped her ring back on. "Erm… A-After I find some other clothes to put on." She said, her face bright red and her ears folded back.
Later…
The setting sun cast a tranquil glow across Zamaron, its light caught in the planet's many crystals to create a captivating display of glowing pink. Flying over the crystal fields, Michael carried Ghia'ta in his arms, the princess dressed in a simple two-piece gauzy pink dress that showed off her arms, legs, and midriff. Her power ring had been left behind in her private chambers and so she relied entirely on Michael for transportation.
The Blue Lantern had also adjusted his outfit; permitting his gloves and the wrap around his head to dissipate to expose more of his skin to the cool evening air. His hair rippled in the breeze as he carried Ghia'ta towards the cliffs overlooking the canyon hosting the central pink battery. He alighted upon the edge and sat down, Ghia'ta shifting her posture so she was seated in his lap with her arms around his neck. She sighed dreamily. "I always love this time of day. The fading light makes everything seem alive, almost like a dream… a dream worth sharing with someone."
"I remember the first time I got to see it with you." Michael mused, his cheek brushing against her hair. "From up top, it's magnificent. But you miss the lightshow from the crystals. Still… beautiful scenery… beautiful people." Ghia'ta smiled.
"I love my home. I've been to many wonderous places but there's nothing quite like it." She told him. "You have no idea how thankful and grateful I am for you and the Justice League stopping that Doomsday monster. Hal Jordan often told me about them, but I have never seen them in action before. I didn't think there were any Kryptonians left!"
"You know about the destruction of Krypton?" Michael wondered.
"Who doesn't? It happened in this very system." Ghia'ta responded. "Khu-fu, destruction on that scale was felt on a cosmic level. An entire planet just wiped out."
"Superman's always been public about his alien origins. But I had no idea a broader glactic community was in the know… then again I've never experienced anything other than Earth culture until now. Don't get me wrong, I know aliens exist what with Martian Manhunter being a member of the Justice League, but I've never had prolonged interactions with them before."
Ghia'ta shifted her position until she was sitting fully in his lap with her back against his chest. Michael wrapped his arms around her while the princess grasped his hands. "Tell me more about the Justice League, what you've experienced."
"Not much to say," Michael shrugged, "what you say today was the most I've ever experienced apart from second-hand news stories… Although there was that time Batman saved my life." Ghia'ta's ears shot straight up.
"Really?"
"I was caught in a bank robbery and one of the thieves pointed his gun at me. I tried to be as still as possible, fearing one wrong move would get me shot. Then Batman showed up and saved the day, er, night." Michael explained. His expression turned from thoughtful to humoured. "That experience helped me become a Blue Lantern."
"Wow…"
"My homeworld owes a lot to the Justice League. I've lost count of how many threats they've thwarted over the years."
"It's interesting to hear about them from someone who is not a member. You weren't even a Blue Lantern, just an innocent civilian." Ghia'ta commented. "I guess that's going to change now."
Michael breathed deeply, catching a faint whiff of some flora perfume come from Ghia'ta. "That's true. My old life is over. I go back, I do so as a Blue Lantern… with a beautiful Zamaron princess for a girlfriend." He said with a smile. Ghia'ta returned it.
"I have never been someone's girlfriend before. Chya-ra knows how many men have wanted to court me but I always turned them down. I've never been in a romantic relationship before… kindled many, sure, but never for myself. What's the human approach to relationships, Michael?"
"When a man and a woman decide they're in love, they will date to get to know the other person more and decide if they want to send the rest of their lives together." He began. "That's not always how it works as some people are a bit more… selfish and just want the companionship or pleasure of someone until they're bored of them. But, generally, once a man and woman decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together, then the man makes a marriage proposal and the two get married."
"How romantic." Ghia'ta cooed. She adjusted her position again, turning around to straddle Michael's lap as she slipped her arms around his neck. "Will that be us, Michael?" She asked. "Will you court me until you're ready to marry me?"
"I will happily court you, Ghia'ta." He whispered. "Is that what you want to be next for us?" He asked, running his hands through her hair as she did the same.
"Yes. Oh, yes, that's what I want. To spend my days with my one true love." The princess cooed. "I love you, Michael. I want us to be together forever."
"Forever is a long time." He replied, his thumb stroking her cheek. Without her ring the tactile sensation of skin on skin seemed more real to Ghia'ta, like she was more sensitive to his direct touch. She leaned closer until their foreheads were touching.
"It's the perfect amount of time."
Her lips met his in a gentle kiss. Without the influence of the violet light, their liplock was electric. Ghia'ta had no idea how much she could crave genuine closeness and she savoured every second of kissing Michael. The human's hands swept across her bare back, the sensation of her skin on his a familiar one but so much more real without the violet light. Michael held her close, a hand on the back of her neck while her fingers tangled in his hair and massaged his scalp. Ghia'ta's tongue swept across his lower lip, pleading for access. He obliged her, a sensual dance unfolding between their mouths. Ghia'ta pulled herself closer. Michael held her tightly. She whimpered into the kiss. The Zamaron slowly rocked back and forth, grinding in his lap as they made out.
When their lips parted, deep breaths following, the golden glow of sunset captured both of their visages exquisitely. Ghia'ta was flush in the face, her ears folded back as she beheld her lover with half-lidded eyes while her hands contracted against his skintight suit. She whimpered faintly, wanting more. Michael's gaze was darkened, eyeing the princess with passionate reverance; a desire for her and only her lit within his veins. It was Ghia'ta who spoke first,
"I-I… I think we should… continue this in my room…" She proposed in a quavering voice.
"That sounds like a very good idea." Michael hummed.
The next morning…
Daylight crept in through the window as Michael stirred in the bed. Sensing a warm body in his arms, he glanced down to see Ghia'ta fast asleep. He smiled as he recalled the night before with perfect clarity. He had certainly been in control of his actions this time, every sensation etched into his memory coupled with Ghia'ta's ecstatic responses. It felt much more soothing to know that he had chosen this path, even satisfying to an extent.
Leaning down, he kissed the top of her head and the princess groaned quietly in her slumber. Her eyes fluttered open and she smiled sleepily as she rubbed her head against his chest. "Good morning." She purred.
"Morning-" Michael said quite deeply before he cleared his throat. "Good morning."
"Ooooo, deep voice." Ghia'ta snickered, appearing quite cozy cuddled up to him. "Sleep well?"
"Very much so." Michael concurred. "You?"
"Mm, yes I did." She hummed. Ghia'ta rolled over, scooting back until her soft round butt was squished against him as Michael wrapped his arms tightly around her. He kissed her neck as they settled into bed. The man did not want to leave this position, perfectly content with this new turn his life had taken. Ghia'ta being his new girlfriend was a welcome change and he wanted to enjoy things for as long as he could. His mind drifted to the last time they had woken up in this bed together and he chuckled to himself. "What's so funny?" Ghia'ta asked.
"Oh, just hoping your aunt doesn't call us first thing again so we can spend a little longer in bed." He explained. Ghia'ta giggled, a beautiful sound.
"Putting that hope to good use." She teased. Then she stretched out and snuggled up closer to him. "But that's a good idea." Michael smirked and hugged her close, closing his eyes contentedly.
Ghia'ta's pink ring, left seated on a box on her nightstand, suddenly flashed as a soundwave pattern rippled forth. "Ghia'ta, I would like to speak with you and Michael when possible." The voice of Aga'po stated.
"Yes, auntie." Ghia'ta dutifully replied, giggling as she finished while Michael sighed in resignation.
"So much for hoping." He grumbled, rolling onto his back. Ghia'ta crawled out of bed and stretched as she stood, inadvertently showing off her perfect body in the morning light. Michael sat up a little, staring as her curvaceous form. With the memories from last night, he found himself appreciating her even moreso this morning, in turn eliciting a stronger reaction from him. Sensing his eyes on her, the princess looked over her shoulder in a rather provocative pose. She could see the darkened look of sensual appreciation in his eyes and bit her lip, her cheeks darkening with all the erotic possibilities flooding her mind.
"I think my aunt can wait a little longer," she whispered in a smoky voice, turning around and sauntering back towards the bed. Her eyes never left Michael's and she licked her lips as she gazed upon her man with a newfound hunger, "Right now, I want breakfast in bed…"
