"Hey Dad…" Ollie trailed off as he saw his parents passed out together. He shook his head at them, they'd always been comfortable with each other and he hoped that this meant that his mom was remembering more. Or at the very least that her body was not afraid of his dad even if her mind was- he had seen how much it hurt his dad for her to push him away.
"Hey Ol," Tommy croaked as he blinked his eyes open. "What time is it?"
"7 am," Ollie said as he sat down in the abandoned chair and Tommy let out a groan. He had not meant to sleep through the night, but he had needed rest and his body had taken it. "She remembering more?"
"No. Not yet. I need to…crap. I meant to swing by the house last night and explain everything to the littles, but I just…" Tommy said as he tried to move away from Kim, but she gripped onto his shirt and held him still. Ollie chuckled as his dad kept trying to wiggle away from his mom and she wouldn't let him, at least that was back to normal. "Ollie."
"It's nice to see something that's normal," Ollie said as his dad tried again and he gave him a look. "It's what she always does when she feels bad, she'll let you up when she wakes up. Nana sent breakfast."
"I'll get…I can't feel my arm," Tommy muttered as he adjusted Kim in his arms and she cuddled into him even more. Ollie was right, there was no way to move away from her and not wake her up and she desperately needed rest as well. "But you're not here just because Nana sent you with breakfast. What's up?"
"So…I…umm before everything happened…Autumn," Ollie stumbled over his words and he caught the knowing look in his dad's eyes. "You knew?"
"I…we…your mom really suspected it. And once she said something- I could see what she saw. What's going on?" Tommy asked and he looked away from his dad. It was one thing when his mom talked like this, it was a completely different thing when his dad did. His mom was great at listening and his dad was great at solving problems, but he wasn't sure he wanted him to solve this. "Ollie- you got me right now. I know you'd rather talk with your mom about this, but…"
"We keep hanging out and we have a great time, but I want…if I ask her out on a date…" Ollie trailed off as he studied his hands. He had asked out a handful of girls over the last couple of years, but he'd never felt this kind of nervous. He felt like there were actual repercussions if he messed up this time and he'd never had that before. "I don't want to ruin our friendship."
"You won't and if she's not interested in you too…you'll probably hit the dojo extra hard for a few weeks, but you'll survive. And she'll see that your caring about her isn't just limited to her liking you too. I know the idea of that hurts, but I also know that you're a good kid Ollie and I hope we've raised you well enough that you know pressuring her will just backfire," Tommy said as Ollie stared at him and he nodded. He had seen how his dad took care of his mom for all of these years and he wanted…he wanted to do the same thing some day. His dad was right though, he could only have what they had if they both wanted it. "And I've freaked you out."
"No. I…how do you…with mom?" Ollie asked as he motioned between the two of them and Tommy smiled as Kim stretched against him, but didn't stir to wake up.
"We're not perfect, there's a lot of stuff that we learned the hard way. One of the best things we ever did the second time around was learn how to talk to each other when things got hard. Well, that and the 'fuck yes' rule," Tommy said as he stared at his father and he saw him realize what he had said, but he plowed on. He'd give it to his dad, he didn't run away from the hard conversations as he had gotten older and this was definitely one of those conversations. "Short version- if we notice or we know that we're not 100% in for something- we say something to each other. And if it's important enough, we figure out how to get there and if it's not, we let it go or we revisit it later. We still fight, you've seen us fight, but we always come back to if the answer is still 'fuck yes' to us and it has been, most of the time."
"And the times that it wasn't?" Ollie pushed. He felt that they might be about to go back into that territory and he didn't know if he could deal with them breaking up. "Mom doesn't…is this going to tear you apart?"
"Remember the part about how if it is important, we figure out how to get there? When we got back together both of us knew we were agreeing to life, even if there was no ring or great proclamations of love that weekend. So no, this won't tear us apart, because I still remember and I'm going to do everything I can to help her remember or if that doesn't work…I guess I'm dating your mom again," Tommy joked and Ollie let out a sigh as he finally pushed a breakfast sandwich towards his dad and he took the other one. "Once she wakes up, I am going to run to the house for a bit to tell the littles what is going on."
"Landon is really starting to hate the whole 'littles' title," Ollie said as Tommy just nodded. For so long it had been the most accurate thing to describe their younger children, but he'd known that eventually they would start hating it. "So you just think I should ask her?"
"Yeah, I'd go with asking her," Tommy said as he dug into the breakfast and he felt Kim squirm against him again. "You waking up or are you going to keep playing possum?"
"How much did you hear?" Ollie asked as the horror shone on his face and Tommy just shook his head. "Mom."
"A lot, but I don't know you. I know I should know you, but I didn't want to give advice with my 18 year old brain instead of…how old am I?" Kim asked as Tommy shook his head.
"35."
"Gosh that feels old," Kim muttered as Ollie smirked, but he turned towards his breakfast as he heard her shriek. "You're Ollie."
"Yeah," Ollie whispered as Tommy finally extracted himself and walked over to their hospital bag to grab a change of clothes for both of them. "We lived in Miami until I was almost 8 then…you got powers and we moved out here."
"Did we move in together right away?" Kim asked as Tommy and Ollie shook their heads. "Why not?"
"Because you're a good mom and you wanted to make sure that if we moved in with Dad that you were staying with Dad. I don't know how many times I asked both of you to move in together between August and March and even then- that was forced," Ollie said as Kim's confusion grew. Why would it be forced? Why wouldn't they happily decide to live together? "Someone was after Dad and you. Dad's house wasn't safe- that's when we all wound up in our apartment and then the house."
"Are the two of you okay if I shower?" Tommy asked as they both nodded and he felt some of the stress lift. He was thankful that Ollie was old enough to really understand what was going on with Kim and that he had had a bit to process it. The littles were going to have a much harder time with this and he was mentally preparing to console them.
"I'm curious, who's Autumn?" Kim asked as she leaned forward and Ollie blushed a bright red. "I'm going to figure this out Ollie, I promise. Even if it means I have to learn it all over again."
"I've known her since I was ten and she moved to Reefside…"
"Daddy!" Opal yelled as she sprinted out the front door and Tommy scooped her up, glancing up to see his dad standing in the doorway and he let out a sigh. Opal had recently learned how to open doors and they were concerned about her letting herself out. Apparently, his father thought it was a good idea to teach her when she could use her new skill and he appreciated that. "Where Mama?"
"She'll be home later today. I just need to get a few things done around here first," Tommy explained as she snuggled into him and he tickled her which got a delighted squeal. "Hey Dad."
"You have breakfast?" Allen asked and Tommy nodded as Opal started playing with his hair. "They're almost done with breakfast and then we were going to take them to the park for a bit."
"They're probably going to need that," Tommy whispered as he shook his head. He couldn't talk with his parents about this right now; he'd talk with them when it was just them. "I'm here to explain what happened."
"Dad?"
"Dad!"
Landon and Sean wrapped him in tight hugs and he gave both of them a squeeze. When they had left Thursday night, he had thought he would be back home sometime Saturday afternoon to tell them that Kim was doing fine and she'd be home Monday. Now she was still coming home today, but things had not gone fine and it was another thing that he was going to have to explain to them and see where they were at about it.
"Hi boys," Tommy softened his tone as he sat down on the floor and they both sat down in front of him, while Opal tried to wiggle out of his lap. "Hey Opie- I need to tell you something about Mama."
"Mama boo-ti-fool?" Opal said as her face lit up and he smiled at their littlest as she scrambled over his lap to get her hair styling stuff. All of their children had picked up on his nickname for Kim at some point in time, but Opal's insistence on it made him smile. It was one of the few things that could make him smile right now.
"Yeah, Mama's beautiful, but that's not what I need to tell all of you. Mama's surgery had some problems. Billy put Mama's skull back together, but her brain wasn't able to take another surgery again so soon. She's forgotten a lot of things because of it," Tommy said as Opal was now brushing his hair and trying to put various clips in it. He saw the confusion in Sean's eyes, but Landon immediately burst into tears. He had probably known something was wrong from the minute Nana had told him that he had to stay at the hospital instead of coming home to give them an update. "Come here, Landon."
"Does she remember us?" Landon sobbed as he dove into Tommy's arms and Tommy clutched him tight. Opal was oblivious to what he had said as she played with his hair and Sean was waiting to see what he said now that Landon was crying.
"No. She doesn't remember Ollie either," Tommy supplied as Sean's face fell and he held one arm out and Sean grabbed on to his other side and sobbed against him as well. "Mama and I are going to work really hard on getting all of her memories back, but it's going to take time."
"This was supposed to fix it! Mom was supposed to be back to normal!" Landon yelled into his chest as he beat his fists against him and Tommy closed his eyes as the tears slipped out. That was exactly what all of them had expected, but it wasn't what had happened. The boys sobbed and yelled against him, getting out the frustration that all of them felt. "I want Mom back!"
"I know and so do I," Tommy admitted as he pulled back and Landon and Sean looked up at him. "Things are going to be different, but the big thing is Mom needs to feel safe and we can tell her things that she used to know."
"Is she remembering what you tell her?" Janice asked and Tommy nodded. Before he left the hospital he had given her a quiz on their children's names and she had remembered all of it easily. It was just the last eighteen years that were missing. "Landon, Sean- this just means when Mom asks questions she'll need your help- like you've been helping me over the last six weeks."
"Daddy- you boo-ti-muous!" Opal declared as she shoved a mirror in front of Tommy and he looked at the star shaped clips she had covered one side of his head in. She peered over his shoulder expectantly and he smiled broadly at her work. She had been trying so hard to get the clips to stick over the last few weeks and she had finally gotten it. "I make Mommy boo-ti-muous too."
"I know you will Opie," Tommy said as the boys clung to him even harder and he looked up at his mom, hoping she had some sort of grandma magic that she could pull out for them. He was out of ideas for what he could do to make things better at the moment. "I'm going to have to go back to the hospital soon boys. I think Nana and Pop were going to take you to the park…"
"I want to see Mom," Landon whispered and Tommy nodded. Sean pulled away from him looking torn between the park and seeing Kim.
"Sean, you can go to the park and have a great time and hopefully by the time you get back we'll be home," Tommy said and he quickly smiled before he let go of him and then ran off to gather the park supplies. "He still tries to do giants on the bars."
"That's why I waited until Pop came up to take them," Janice said as Tommy helped Landon to his feet and he then gave his mom a hug. "Baby, it's going to be okay."
"I'm taking it one day at a time," Tommy responded as Janice looked at him and he squeezed his eyes shut. "Once the kids go to sleep tonight, we can talk. I need to talk."
"Look who decided to come along," Tommy said as he opened the door to Kim's hospital room and Landon walked in, in front of him, holding a teddy bear he had picked out from the gift shop. "Kim, this is Landon."
"Hey," Kim whispered as she stared at their second son and thought how much he looked like her brother, except for the shockingly light hair.
"Mom…" Landon tried to be strong but his lower lip quivered and Tommy gave him a gentle nudge that was enough to send him scrambling up into bed with Kim and giving her a bear hug. He sobbed against her as she just held him and some sense of familiarity came over her. This was their sensitive child. They were bound to have at least one of them. "Please…please remember us."
"Oh baby, I'm trying really hard," Kim said as she rocked back and forth and he just clung to her. Ollie reached over and rubbed Landon's back as well as she saw the first tears from him. Tommy, alone, had a dry face, but she could tell that he was only keeping it together for the benefit of their children. "I know you don't want to hear this, but it's just going to take time."
"Are you ready to…" Billy trailed off as he saw the oldest Oliver children and Landon sat up and glared at him. "I can come back."
"Why didn't you fix her? Why did you make it worse?" Landon yelled as he sat up and started to move to the edge of the bed. "Why didn't you make her better?"
"I know you're scared and frustrated, Landon and I wish I had good answers for you, but sometimes things happen in medicine that we don't understand. Your mom losing her memory is one of those things," Billy said as he sat down in one of the chairs and Landon deflated a bit. "I want her to remember everything too and I'm going to do everything I can to help her new doctors help her."
"I want my mom back," Landon sobbed as Billy gave him a hug and he looked up to see the pain on Kim and Tommy's faces.
"We all want her back," Ollie said as he walked over to Landon and squatted down in front of him. "She's still Mom, Landon. Same corny jokes, same over interest in our lives, same grossing us out with Dad."
"Hey," Kim objected as they both looked back at her and she saw the beginning of a smile on Landon's face. "Do we really do that much PDA in front of you?"
"Oh yeah," Billy muttered as Kim and Tommy both pegged him with a stare. "It's cute, but annoying at times. Okay, before I get their wrath- I have all of your paperwork here and I just have to page the nurses station to get a wheelchair so we can wheel you out."
"So I need to go get the car?" Tommy asked and Billy nodded. "Landon- you want to go home with Ollie or with us?"
"Ollie?" Landon looked up at him and he smiled at Landon and put an arm around him. "Can we get tacos on the way home?"
"Yeah, I'll let Nana know we're bringing home lunch," Tommy said as he handed Ollie some extra money and then walked over to Kim who was watching him closely. "I'll see you in a few minutes."
"Okay," Kim whispered as her stress spiked. She wanted to be out of the hospital, but the idea of going home, to a place that she didn't know was absolutely terrifying.
