Testing

GV and Joule sat in the waiting room of the building they had been told the 'Initial tests to determine esper ability' would be held. The two of them already knew the likely powers that would be found.

However for security they had decided to limit what power they displayed here. They didn't want to be found; judging from the booklet that GV had been given, he and Joule would possess abilities that rivalled some of the more powerful espers of the city.

The two of them just chatted in the waiting room, while keeping an eye on the clock. It was late afternoon and their testing would begin in a few minutes, finding somewhere to stay the night might be a challenge if the sun is down before they get out of testing.

The hands of the clock turned as Joule pulled out a pamphlet from a stand in the waiting room. The pamphlet seemed to just be a source of travel info for tourists and Joule was studying it as if looking for something. In a moment she stopped and showed the info she found to GV. It was an advert for a karaoke bar.

Back home she had always wanted to go to one with friends but she was worried if Lumen's songs came on then she would be revealed. She must want to go now as their was no worry of being found out.

GV nodded to her "Sure, we can go in the future if you want."

Joule's face was momentarily filled with joy before she reduced it to being just a warm smile "Thanks GV, I am just looking forward to it now."

Eventually the appointed hour came and Gunvolt was called in first while Joule waited outside. They apparently had to do these tests one at a time and as Gunvolt seemed older, his session was booked first.

Joule watched after him, a sense of panic in her chest. Since coming to this world they hadn't been separate and Joule once again realised how he gave her a sense of direction in what she was doing. Without him she felt a little lost.

He was led to a room with a few tables spaced around and some large machines pushed against the back wall.

The scientist led Gunvolt to the first test, a piece of paper that was held very slightly of the ground by a simple apparatus. The whole thing looked like a scientific swing set.

Gunvolt was asked to sit at the chair next to the device before the scientist went to grab something from a nearby table. While he did that GV considered everything in the room; not counting the thing he was sat next to the other devices that were 'Active' were a large cube with a small slot (for paper printouts maybe), A table with a set of cards on them, an old fashioned scale, a cage of mice and a set of small bags that seemed to contain something.

The scientist came back holding a small box and a glass of water, he set them both on a nearby table before speaking "For this testing we will give you a drug for each test that will make it easier to read the results." Gunvolt stiffened when he heard he would be drugged and the scientist responded quickly "Don't worry, these drugs with me are all very minor doses. None of the effects will last more than a few minutes."

Gunvolt was still unsure but he nodded so the scientist opened the box and handed him a small pill and the water. Gunvolt took the pill warily and then waited while the scientist looked at his watch.

After a few seconds had passed the scientist nodded and pointed at the paper apparatus and gave an instruction "Focus your attention on the paper please."

Gunvolt did so, not knowing what the test was for at first but he figured it out quickly when a bit of electricity arced between the centimetre gap between the paper and the floor. The scientist seemed surprised (Shocked you may say) at the sudden reaction, Gunvolt heard him mumble "Quick for a beginner" before he spoke up "It would appear your esper power is a form of Telekinesis called Electromaster.

Gunvolt looked away from the scientist and rolled his eyes. He listened to the scientist's explanation while adding some sarcastic comments "Really? I can control electrons, I never knew".

Of course the scientist didn't hear his thoughts so he kept right on talking about how telekinesis was the most common of the ability types and related topics that GV only half paid attention too.

The scientist left to gather some specialised equipment to determine power level, leaving GV to himself. He thought back to when he first used his ability.

It had been implanted into him by Sumeragi basically because they needed another living battery. His Septima could generate more electricity than any conventional fuel and the repetitively low running cost (Just some food and water) made it good business to have a living battery human.

The scientist came back with a pair of gloves that seemed to be made of rubber but they had conductive material over the palms and one of them had a device that seemed to be designed to measure electric current.

"Put these on and put your hands together" instructed the scientist as he handed the gloves over and went to pull another pill from the pillbox.

GV swallowed the new pill and pulled on the gloves, a strange feeling filled him as he realised the material he thought was rubber was actually something different, this material was much more restrictive to currents than rubber.

As the scientist noted that the pill had taken effect he directed GV to hold his hands close to each other before focusing on the space between. As he did so he felt a large amount of power flash between the conductive pads on the gloves.

He had decided to hold back so he reduced the focus from the gloves and sparks stopped flying, the scientist looked over from the pda he held to monitor the data "Don't play around to much, you likely don't have to fine control over your power yet"

Gunvolt rolled his eyes and thought about how he reduced his current to hack devices, it seemed that the drug was pressing his abilities up so it was hard to reduce the current but he managed to keep a stable current of 75% normal power.

Eventually the scientist asked him to stop and told him that he was done for the day. So he left for the waiting room where he met up with Joule who had been doing her tests a bit after him but seemed to have finished first.

As they turned to leave a scientist that GV didn't know walked over to them, Joule seemed to recognise her though so it was likely that she had taken Joule's tests.

She introduced herself to the two of them "Hello, I am Dr Kiyama", Joule and GV nodded as she continued "As you two don't have anywhere to stay while waiting for results you are allowed to stay here tonight. There are rooms upstairs with beds."

GV was unsure but Joule nodded and smiled, either way it was better than walking around outside at night with no place to stay.

The two of them followed Dr Kiyama to their rooms as she unlocked the doors for them. The room was only lightly furnished, only a pair of beds and desks for the inhabitants. Most of the room was taken up by some equipment that seemed to be turned off. "Don't worry about those" Dr Kiyama responded to Guvolts observation of the machines "They aren't going to be used in your sleep, they are just devices that help mind readers and the like that can't turn their ability off to sleep."

The two of the set down to rest as it had been a long day.

The scientists had sent the data to tree diagram for an analysis but they were still surprised, little effort was put in and the two already showed powerful abilities.

Rarely people would be born with abilities, more common was people who had true power innately and yet didn't know how to use it.

Most Espers start at level 1 and build themselves up, even the level 5s had done that, but these two were part of a rare case where people were born with abilities.

Both of them were at least level 4 by the AIM readings but it was always hard to judge level 5 so that made the scientists worried. The actual tests said that Gunvolt was a high level 4 while Joule seemed to be a level 2 telepath without much control over her ability but she had the AIM of someone much stronger.

It was doubtful that they had the skill to hide their power but they had sent the request to tree diagram to examine, just in case.

Considering their potential they would both be able to get a lot of funding if they wanted it and they would have access to the best schools like Tokiwadai (Joule only) or Nagatenjouki Academy (Where they could both go).

They asked for the pamphlets for each possible school and pushed them under the door in the room the two were staying in. In the morning they would have to decide on their school and after a few days they would be in normal development.

Hopefully tree diagram wouldn't take too long to determine their true ability levels.

Joule talk 2: My tests

[[ASG: Cyanotype]]

GV and Joule rested on their beds, they had not yet gotten ready for beds so they were just chatting about their tests, GV had just finished his explanation and he asked for Joule to start hers.

"Well I was led into the room and the same sort of machines were there" she started before making note that the machines didn't work for her.

"Eventually the Dr Kiyama went over to a chair and sat down, She wondered if I might be a telepath and handed me the pill for that test. She asked me to look at her and think a single thing over and over again."

Joule continued "I chose 'Does this work?' as the message and thought it at her, after a few seconds she sighed in obvious relief before she said 'You're a telepath' and stood back up"

Gunvolt nodded "Did she bring out other tests for you?" Joule shook her head "Apparently the only real way to test telepathy for them is just to bring more people, she asked be to try and order the mice in the cage around while she fetched more people"

A smile rose to her face "The mice were cute and obviously well trained or practised, I could direct them to stand in a different part of the cage but nothing more. I still can't communicate with more than one person at a time without outside help."

The two of them heard a chuckle as Lumen's butterfly form appeared on Joule's shoulder, in a moment GV heard Lumen's voice in his head "She actually did quite will without me but I think the drug was making it much easier for her."

The three of them continued their conversation for a few minutes before getting ready for bed
