Chapter Twenty-three
"You're not dressing up?" Stefan stated as Jessica came downstairs in her usual jeans and hoodie.
"I hate the dresses that exist now, let alone wearing some god-awful tight corset thing that I can't breathe in" Jessica mumbled quietly, keeping her eyes downcast.
Stefan immediately sensed that something was wrong, he focused on Jessica and assessed her closely from head to toe.
"Are you alright?" Stefan asked at her defeated stance.
Jessica stared at him. She had got up earlier that morning so that she could take her time getting showered and dressed. Her entire body ached, and she had not slept well at all. She had seen the look of regret on her father's face after he had slapped her. Also, it's not like she didn't deserve it.
"I'm fine Stefan, don't worry about it" Jessica whispered.
Stefan did not believe her; he had felt an odd tension around her the past week, and he wanted to question her about it.
"Please Stefan, just drop it" Jessica stated, noticing Stefan's expression.
Stefan watched in confusion as Jessica went into the kitchen.
"What the hell?" Stefan muttered to himself.
He shook himself out of his thoughts and continued to get dressed for the Founder's Day event. He then entered the study where he knew he would find an old pocket square in one of the desk drawers. As he entered the study, he stopped as the sight of Damon startled him.
Stefan took in the scene and noted that it looked like Damon had been there all night. There were two empty bottles of bourbon on the floor and Damon was laying on the floor in the clothes he had been wearing the previous day.
"Damon? What are you doing on the floor?" Stefan asked, wondering if he had entered some sort of Twilight Zone this morning.
Damon stirred at his brother's voice and opened his eyes, noting that he had a splitting headache. He knew he needed some blood.
"Does she hate me?" Damon groaned.
Stefan frowned in confusion for a moment before Damon repeated himself.
"Does my daughter hate me?" Damon asked.
Stefan's eyebrows flew to his hairline as the pieces of the puzzle started falling into place.
"What the hell have you done?" Stefan demanded.
"We were arguing last night, and I lost it. I smacked her harshly across the face and knocked her to the ground" Damon whispered, full of self-loathing.
Stefan gasped.
"What on earth were you arguing so badly about that you resorted to that?" Stefan asked.
"She told me that I was an idiot for trusting Elena and that no matter what, there is no way that Bonnie de-spelled the device yesterday. She said that I signed our death sentence" Damon explained.
Stefan shook his head.
"Now you have a clearer mind, what do you think?" Stefan asked.
"I think Jessica is right" Damon sighed honestly.
"Then why did you hit her? Did she really deserve that?" Stefan asked.
Damon shook his head.
"No. I admit that I was angry, and she was pissing me off but, I never should have hit her out of the blue without warning like that. I don't even know where the desire to do it came from. Now all I can think about is how I became our father after all" Damon whispered as he buried his face into the rug.
Stefan rubbed his face with his hands in sheer stress, he didn't know how to go about fixing this.
"You need to talk to her, before any of us leave the house this morning" Stefan stated.
Damon nodded and pulled himself up off the floor.
"Where is she?" Damon asked.
"In the kitchen" Stefan replied.
.
.
.
"Not eating breakfast?" Damon whispered hesitantly as he lingered in the kitchen doorway.
Jessica looked over at him and then back down at the cup of tea in her hands. Damon looked down ashamedly as he noted the hint of a bruise which still graced her face, she hadn't fully healed yet.
"I'm not hungry" she whispered back.
"Jessica, I need to apologize for my actions last night. It was uncalled for, and I hate myself for what I did to you. I need to make this up to you if you'll give me a chance?" Damon said, voice full of regret.
Jessica was silent for a few minutes as she contemplated the night before.
"I know that I was giving you attitude last night and for that, I apologise. However, we were arguing like we normally do, and it wasn't until I spoke negatively about Elena, that something in your expression and body language changed. You suddenly became darker and more defensive. Just to avoid this situation again going forward, is that how you are going to react every time I speak out against Elena?" Jessica asked.
Damon looked down. As much as he had tried to deny it, Elena had gotten under his skin recently, and he felt overwhelmingly protective of her and felt the need to defend her at all times. Would he act irrationally like this again if someone spoke ill of Elena in the future? He honestly didn't know.
Jessica watched him carefully and saw him contemplate her words. His expression was telling enough, and Jessica knew that she would have to watch what she said in the future, no matter what promises her father made to her.
"I think that answers my question" she said, voice sounding defeated.
"Jessica…" Damon tried to think of something to say.
Jessica shook her head.
"Don't worry about it. You're not the first man to hit me, I will just be more careful in future and keep my thoughts to myself. To be 'seen and not heard'…isn't that the old phrase?" Jessica stated.
She moved to the sink to wash her cup and then went to walk out of the kitchen, through the doorway that Damon was still blocking.
Damon moved out of her way, and she walked back into the living room where Stefan was stood, in full costume, looking at her worriedly.
"Is that how you really used to dress?" Jessica asked curiously, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
Stefan gave her a small smile and nodded.
"Are you sure you don't want to join in? I'm sure we have some period dresses around here somewhere…it could be fun" Stefan suggested.
"We have plenty of dresses in one of the upstairs closets" Damon stated quietly as he walked in on Jessica and Stefan's conversation.
"I don't think so" Jessica shook her head.
Damon looked at her and nodded.
"Besides when this whole Gilbert device situation backfires, at least I will be able to run fast in this" Jessica stated, promptly shutting Damon down.
Stefan frowned.
"You really think that Bonnie didn't de-spell the device" Stefan stated.
"Of course she didn't" Jessica replied as she grabbed her phone and indicated that she was ready.
"Besides, you have bigger concerns anyway Stefan" Jessica said.
"What would they be?" Stefan asked.
"You know, telling Elena about…well, you know…" Jessica said.
"Ok…that gives me nothing to go on, what are you talking about?" Stefan asked.
"The truth about John" Jessica stated, loving withholding the information just to tease him a little.
"Clever girl" Damon murmured.
"You two are driving me nuts! Can either of you tell me what's going on?" Stefan demanded.
"Well, as I said to you last night, Elena and I are friends. As her friend, I wasn't looking forward to telling her the truth about John" Damon grinned, playing along.
Stefan glared at both of them.
Damon rolled his eyes.
"Ok spoilsport…Isobel, she dated John when they were fifteen…" Damon began explaining.
Stefan's eyes moved from Damon to Jessica as Jessica made an inappropriate gesture by creating a circle by touching her forefinger to her thumb and using the forefinger on her other hand to crudely put through the circle and provide a visual to Damon's verbal explanation.
Both Stefan and Damon looked at her with disapproval at the vulgar gesture.
"…Isobel gets pregnant and ends up in the doctor's office of John's brother for the delivery" Damon continued, ignoring Jessica's antics.
Stefan just stared dumbfoundedly.
"So…John's role in all of this is…" Jessica prompted.
Stefan's eyebrows rose.
"You guys think that John is Elena's father?" he asked in disbelief.
Jessica nodded her head.
"That's crazy" Stefan stammered.
"Well…while you're pouting over it, I'm gonna go steal your girl" Damon provoked.
Stefan shook his head.
"Oh, lighten up Stefan! Besides, you were the one who brought up the whole 'I'm insecure' thing" Damon mocked.
He then turned to Jessica, tone turning soft once more.
"Do you want a ride?" he asked hesitantly.
"Ok…see you later Stefan" Jessica agreed hesitantly as she tried to ignore the awkward tension in the room.
She and Damon left.
Stefan sighed and headed out behind them to meet Elena as her escort.
.
.
.
At the event, Jessica split from Damon.
Firstly, she went over and saw Tyler. She mocked him in his soldier's uniform saying that she remembered when he'd nearly cried over a papercut.
"You're a comedian" Tyler mocked back.
She laughed at that.
"How's Matt doing?" Jessica asked, hoping that the boys had resolved some of their issues.
Tyler shrugged.
"I got the guy to the hospital. His arm was in pretty bad shape, I don't think Caroline is happy about the cast though" Tyler grinned as he nodded in the direction where Bonnie was taking pictures of Matt and Caroline together.
"Hide your cast, it's not era appropriate" Caroline said as she encouraged Matt to place his injured arm behind her out of shot.
Jessica and Tyler laughed at Matt's expression.
"I'm glad you guys are kinda ok" Jessica said.
Tyler nodded.
"Yeah, I think I still have lot further to go though" Tyler admitted.
"You made out with his mother and then beat the shit out of him, of course you do!" Jessica retorted.
Tyler nodded in agreement.
"Hey Jessica" another voice called out to her.
Jessica whirled around in surprise.
"Jeremy?" she said.
"Hi" Jeremy replied awkwardly.
"Oh, so you're talking to me now?" she replied moodily.
"Ok…I'm gonna head back to the float…" Tyler said, not wanting to get caught up in whatever Jeremy had done to piss Jessica off that much.
"Look Jessica, I know that I have been a douche but, I was so mad when I read Elena's journal. I'm still really pissed at her now" Jeremy explained.
"So, why are you talking to me?" Jessica asked.
"Anna came to see me this last night. Her mother was killed" Jeremy said.
Jessica gasped.
"Pearl's dead?" she stated.
Jeremy nodded.
"Anna is devastated, and she just wants a place to go. She wants to fit in with us, and it was Anna who told me that you really didn't have that much to do with the whole Vicki thing" Jeremy said.
Jessica nodded.
"Is that what you were most upset to find out about? That Vicki girl? I arrived here after that had all happened. I wasn't even told about it until after I had been here for a few weeks. I'm sorry Jeremy…I really had nothing to do with the Vicki thing" Jessica said.
"I know, which is why I'm not so upset with you anymore. It's Elena that I'm pissed off about as she was the one who told Damon to erase my memories" Jeremy said.
Jessica smiled reassuringly at him.
"This whole vampire thing can get a bit overwhelming. From what I've been told, Elena panicked and made the snap decision to ease your pain" Jessica replied.
"That still doesn't make it ok" Jeremy said.
Jessica sighed.
"Perhaps you're right…but she is still your sister, and she loves you with her whole heart" Jessica replied.
Jeremy didn't look convinced, but Jessica did not have time to do any more convincing as Mrs Lockwood approached them.
"Jeremy, you're needed by the float" she instructed.
"Ok Mrs Lockwood. See you later Jessica" Jeremy said as he was ushered away by a stressed Mrs Lockwood.
Jessica laughed lightly and looked around.
She smiled at all the costumes and how dressed-up everyone was for the event. She looked over to the Miss Mystic float and saw Elena all curly-haired and in her dress as Stefan escorted her onto the float.
She then saw Damon and headed over to him so that she could stand with him and watch the parade.
"How you doing Kiddo?" he asked quietly.
"I'm fine, just enjoying watching everybody dress-up and pretend they're in the nineteenth century" Jessica sighed.
"It's cool huh" Damon said, trying to keep the conversation going.
Jessica shrugged.
Damon sighed.
"Look Jessica, I was way out of line last night. I hate myself for what I did and, you have already been through so much this week, that my actions are inexcusable. Yes, we were both angry…most likely the result of an emotional week and we should've talked about it instead of fought. Unfortunately, I think our personalities are so similar that we will most likely clash like that again" Damon said.
Jessica stared at him for a moment, she wasn't quite ready to forgive him completely just yet. However, she admitted to herself that she needed him so, she decided that they would need to sit down together and discuss the whole situation at some point. But she was determined to enjoy just one normal day today.
Her attention focused back on those who were dressed up, and she indicated in their direction.
"Is it accurate in any way shape or form?" Jessica asked.
"It's not that bad plus, it smells a lot better because there aren't any horses wandering around" Damon replied hesitantly at her blatant attempt to change the subject.
"Small mercies" Jessica replied.
"Come on, they're about to start the parade. Do you want to go out onto the street and get ready to watch it?" Damon asked.
Jessica agreed and the two walked away from the prep area to find a good viewing spot.
As Damon and Jessica walked towards a less crowded spot, the Miss Mystic float had paused up ahead. Jessica could see Elena waving at Bonnie and the girl's exchanged smiles…until Damon broke their line of vision.
He waved sarcastically at Elena and Stefan and then surprised Jessica by turning to Bonnie.
"What do you want Damon?" Bonnie asked.
"I don't take what you did lightly, and I just wanted to say thank you. The device that Emily spelled would've most likely killed us…I owe you" Damon said, looking at her expression for any falsity.
Bonnie smiled awkwardly and nodded as she tried to explain she only did it for Elena.
Damon acknowledged that but was thankful anyway.
"Enjoy the parade" Jessica said, also smiling at Bonnie.
With that, Damon continued walking Jessica over to a good viewing spot and they prepared to stand and watch the rest of the parade together.
'She did not de-spell that device' was all Jessica could think.
.
.
.
After they had watched the parade, Jessica said that she wanted to go and catch-up with Tyler at The Grille. Damon nodded and told her to stay safe.
Jessica joined Tyler, as Matt and Caroline watched them awkwardly from another table, whilst the two of them had a nice afternoon together. They got some food, and drinks, played some pool, and just had fun.
Jessica was momentarily distracted by Damon entering the building, he immediately went over to Elena and started talking to her. It looked like Damon was trying to apologise and Elena was begrudgingly accepting his apology whilst reprimanding him at the same time.
Jessica tried not to laugh at his expense.
When Elena turned to walk away from him, Damon looked over in Jessica's direction and smiled softly at her…still treading on eggshells around her.
Jessica smiled tightly back at him as Tyler approached her and told her it was her turn at the pool table. Jessica focused and went back to playing their game.
A short time later, Mayor Lockwood approached the two of them.
"What on earth are you still doing here Tyler, didn't I tell you to go home?" the mayor asked with barely concealed rage.
Tyler shrugged.
"I decided to spend the afternoon in here with Jessica instead" Tyler replied.
Jessica stared wide eyed at the two men, she was awkwardly stood in the middle of them and tried to move out of the way.
"When I tell you to do something, I expect you to do it" the mayor shouted as he made to grab Tyler's arm.
"Mayor Lockwood, is everything ok?" Caroline asked as she walked over to the three of them with Matt following behind her.
"Look, all of you listen to me. You all need to go home now. Tyler, take my car and take your friends with you. Get them all out of here safely" the mayor instructed.
All teens could sense the seriousness of their tone and Tyler nodded his head in agreement.
Jessica knew something was up and did not want to leave without informing Damon or Stefan where she was going, she wasn't going to make that mistake again.
"You guys go, I've just had a text from Damon. He's told me that Stefan is coming to get me now and taking me home…I'll see you tomorrow" Jessica said, pretending she had just received a text from Damon.
Mayor Lockwood looked like he wanted to protest, as did Tyler.
"Honestly, go! Have a great evening" she smiled at Tyler, Matt, and Caroline.
The mayor, realising that he wasn't going to convince the girl, ushered the other three out of the restaurant. He then turned to Jessica once they had gone.
"You should've gone with my son Miss Salvatore, there are dangerous things that happen in our town at night" the mayor stated.
Jessica shrugged.
"I'm aware of all the animal attacks" she replied.
The mayor stared at her.
"There are some creatures out there that are worse than the animals" he stated, thinking he was being cryptic.
"Don't worry, I always make it a priority to wear vervain" Jessica quipped, catching the mayor off guard.
He just stared at her.
"How…" he stuttered.
"I'm a Salvatore, Mayor Lockwood. I'm not an idiot" she grinned at him.
"Now…what's going on?" she asked.
The mayor gulped.
"I've been told that there are a group of them planning to attack the founding families tonight through an act of revenge. But don't worry Miss Salvatore, John Gilbert has a way which will be able to take them all down" the mayor explained.
She panicked internally.
"The Gilbert device?" she whispered.
The mayor looked really shocked now, he went to question her knowledge further.
"Sorry sir, I'd better go find Damon and Stefan" she said before he could say another word.
She ran for the exit.
.
.
.
Once outside, Jessica quickly called and messaged both Damon and Stefan, begging one of them to answer.
When neither of them did, she started running around the town in search of anyone that could help her find them. She knew that she didn't have much time if there were really vampires getting ready to attack.
As she passed strangers in the town square, she realised that she recognised some of their faces from the house that Stefan had been taken and tortured in.
Jessica started to feel an anxiety attack approaching, they really were here.
Jessica heard the mayor start delivering his speech from the podium and thanking the founders for their association in creating the town which everybody was proud of today.
Jessica finally saw Alaric on the other side of the square and knew that she needed to get to him.
The fireworks began and, before she could even begin taking another step towards where she had just seen Alaric, she felt the most intense pain flash through her skull.
She instantly dropped to her knees, crying out as she did so, the pain was worse than when her head had been slammed on the floor of the boarding house during the vampire attack.
She tried to call out for Alaric but could see that something had caught his attention in the opposite direction as he ran further and further away from her.
"Well, well…Jessica Salvatore. Looks like you really are one of them after all" Jessica had just enough energy to stare up at the face of John Gilbert who had just appeared from one of the buildings opposite where she had collapsed.
"But I'm really not" she said through gritted teeth.
"That's too bad" was all she heard as John threw an almighty blow to her face, rendering her unconscious.
.
.
.
When Jessica regained consciousness, she groaned in pain. Her face felt like it was on fire from the force of John's blow. It was the same spot she was still healing from Damon's hit the day before. At least the searing pain through her skull had stopped.
She tried to gather her bearings and could see that she was laying on the ground of a basement with lots of other bodies.
"Get out of here, it's only the vervain keeping them down. The fire will deal with them now" Jessica managed to roll her head in the direction of John's voice as he ordered the deputies back up the basement steps.
He went to follow them when something grabbed his foot.
Jessica realised it was Anna and she watched helplessly as John made quick work of ramming a stake through Anna's chest.
"No" Jessica whispered.
John turned his back on them all and headed back up the stairs.
With his back turned, Jessica forced herself to find the strength to push herself up and head over to Anna's body.
She stared sadly at Anna's dead body.
"Jessica! Why the hell are you down here?!" Jessica gasped as her attention was drawn to a very weak Damon, who was laying mere feet from where she sat with Anna.
She rushed over to him as she heard a sloshing sound from the direction of the stairs.
Jessica had just enough time to make out John dousing the stairs in petrol and then lighting a match. The stairs, and the bodies which had already been doused, went up instantly in violent flames.
Jessica moved even closer to Damon as the flames created a circle around them.
Damon instantly encircled Jessica in his arms the best he could in his weakened state, he was in shock that she was down here in the first place.
"I was fine…then there was screeching noise and unbearable pain sliced through my head" Jessica explained.
"What happened to your face?" Damon asked in horror that the Gilbert device had managed to take her down as well.
"John took me out" Jessica stated.
Damon growled at the thought of John laying a hand on his daughter. Then immediately felt bad as, not even twenty-four hours ago, he had done the very same thing to her.
"Damon? Jessica? What are you doing down here?" the mayor calls out.
"I'm a vampire and Jessica's my half-vampire daughter…what's your excuse?" Damon asked.
The mayor looked shocked as he backed away from both of them.
"You're not a vampire? The vervain didn't affect you" Damon stated as he crawled on his stomach trying to get closer to the mayor.
The mayor kept moving back in fear and unfortunately moved back right within the grasp of one of the tomb vampires. The vampire snapped the mayor's neck…killing him instantly.
It seemed like Jessica and Damon were the last ones standing and Jessica acted quickly by holding out her wrist to Damon.
Damon looked at her in shocked confusion.
"I think I can control the flames but I'm not strong enough to carry you or support your weight. I wasn't vervained, take some of my blood so I can get us both out of here alive" Jessica explained quickly.
Damon hesitated for half a second and then allowed his fangs to sink into Jessica's wrist, taking just enough blood to keep them both mobile.
When Damon let go of her wrist, he kissed her forehead in thanks.
Jessica smiled.
"Right, let's get out of here" Jessica said as she closed her eyes and tried to take control of the flames.
Damon and Jessica supported each other as Jessica concentrated harder than she ever had in her life.
A few seconds later, the flames parted enough for them to get over to the stairs.
They even managed to support each other up the stairs and they opened the basement door just as Stefan was appearing through the smoky corridor towards them.
"Thank fuck!" Stefan exclaimed as he moved to support the both of them.
Jessica couldn't hold her concentration anymore and let go. The sudden woosh from the rush of flames behind them were enough to hit home just how close Jessica and Damon had been to being barbequed. They could even hear the screams of the vampires who were still conscious as they burned to death below them.
Stefan forced both her and Damon out of the side door and out onto the street. Jessica was trying to catch her breath as she and Damon choked on the remnants of smoke in their systems.
"Oh my god" Elena said as she rushed over to where they all stood, checking to make sure everyone was ok.
"We're fine" Damon spluttered, not enjoying the fuss he was receiving from his weakness.
"You're bleeding and bruised" Stefan yelled as he took in Jessica's appearance for the first time.
"The Gilbert device affected you?" Bonnie gasped from where she stood.
Jessica nodded as Bonnie looked at the condition the younger teen was in.
"I'm so sorry" she whispered as she quickly hurried away from them all.
They all watched her go.
"Your face?" Stefan asked, wanting clarification.
"John" Jessica answered.
Stefan stared at her in pity.
"And your wrist?" he nodded towards her bite.
"He was vervained" Jessica indicated towards Damon who still had some of her now dried blood on his mouth.
Damon grabbed the bottom of his shirt and tore a bit of it off. He walked over to Jessica and gently wrapped the fabric around Jessica's bloody wrist. He then pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly.
"I could've lost you tonight" he whispered into her hair.
"I could've lost you" Jessica replied, hugging him back just as tightly.
"I'm so sorry that you had the misfortune of ending up with me as your guardian" Damon apologised sincerely.
"You've kind of grown on me" Jessica smiled at him as she tried to hold back her tears.
"I love you kid" he stated seriously, finally admitting to loving someone for the first time in over a century.
"I love you to…dad" Jessica whispered back, calling someone 'dad' for the first time ever.
Damon smiled as he felt a couple of tears build up in his eyes, he was struck by the unexpected joy he felt at Jessica acknowledging him as her father for the first time even though he knew that he did not deserve the title in any way.
Stefan and Elena watched the two of them have their moment. Elena watched in shock as she finally discovered exactly who Jessica was in relation to Damon and Stefan. She wanted to ask further questions about how that worked and if it was true but, she kept her mouth closed when she saw Stefan looking over at her, a finger to his lips in a hushing motion. Elena understood what Stefan was asking and nodded as she smiled and grabbed Stefan's hand in hers.
Stefan watched as father and daughter finally shared another rare bonding moment. As two of the most unemotional people Stefan had ever met, he was beyond happy to be able to witness that both of them were capable of some kind of emotion. He held Elena's hand as his misguided teenage niece clung to her irresponsible – and not so long-ago monster – father. They balanced each other.
After a few more minutes of the two sharing their moment, they both pulled out of their hug. Jessica sniffled and tried not to grin at how Damon tried to swipe at his eyes unnoticeably.
"Can we go home now?" Jessica whispered, suddenly feeling exhausted.
Damon nodded.
"Stefan, can you get Jessica and Elena home safely? I need to quickly go and check in with Liz. The mayor died down in that basement tonight" Damon stated.
"Mayor Lockwood is dead! Was he a…?" Elena asked.
Jessica and Damon shook their heads.
"No, he wasn't but, I'm sure Liz and Carol are trying to regain control of the system at the moment. They might need my help and they might also be able to fill me in on what we missed" Damon said.
The other three nodded.
"Will you be alright?" Damon asked as he looked at Jessica.
Jessica nodded.
"I'll sort her out, she'll be fine until you get home" Stefan said reassuringly.
"Ok, I will see you all later" Damon stated as he said goodbye and headed off for the police station in the hopes of finding Liz.
"Let's get you girl's home" Stefan said after Damon had disappeared from sight.
"Actually, I'm going to go back to The Grille. I want to talk to Bonnie, and I need to go and collect my stuff from the school from this morning" Elena said.
Stefan nodded.
Stefan and Jessica walked with Elena and made sure that she got to The Grille safely and only said goodbye when they could see Bonnie sat inside.
Before they could leave the two girls to talk, Bonnie walked over to Stefan.
"I just wanted to say that the only reason I tried to help save Damon tonight was because Elena loves you, and as Elena is my best friend, I couldn't let either of you die in that fire. Granted I didn't know Jessica was down there as well…if I had, I would've found a way to stop the whole thing altogether. However, Damon needs to change. I'm stronger now and I know what I am capable of. We both want to protect the people we care about. However, for you two, Damon is one of those people. If he so much spills a drop of innocent blood, I will take him down…even if I need to take the two of you down as well" Bonnie stated.
"He won't" Jessica replied, she wanted to be angry at Bonnie's threats but understood just how much Bonnie had lost in such a short space of time.
Bonnie nodded.
"You're not the only one hoping that he's going to change but, after tonight, I think he has finally realised that he can find meaning to his life. He hasn't had that for a long time" Stefan stated.
Bonnie nodded and headed back to Elena.
Stefan and Jessica headed over to Stefan's car and Stefan started to drive them home.
.
.
.
Jessica had fallen asleep as soon as she flopped on the sofa.
Stefan smiled at her but left her where she was as she looked comfy.
Whilst Jessica was asleep, Stefan had received a panicked call from Elena as she quickly explained that a vampire had got into the house and attacked John and that her brother had tried to take his own life.
Reassured that Jessica was safe and sleeping soundly, Stefan quietly left the house and rushed over to make sure Elena was ok.
Meanwhile, the sound of the front door opening and closing roused Jessica from her sleep.
She shot up from the couch and looked towards the direction of the door.
"Elena?" Jessica asked, still groggy from sleep.
"Who are you?" Elena asked in surprise at Jessica's appearance.
Jessica looked at Elena in confusion, why would Elena not know who Jessica was?
Jessica's brain finally caught up to her and her eyes widened.
"Katherine?" Jessica stated.
Katherine's eyes widened in wonder at the fact that this kid knew more about her than she did about the kid.
"Hmmm…if you really know who I am, you will know that I am always one step ahead. Yet, this time I'm surprised…too bad I'm not a fan of surprises" Katherine said as she rushed towards the frozen teen, fangs extended.
Jessica screamed.
End of Part One
