Tony felt the blood drain from his face and a cold chill go through his body.
'Dead! Angela was dead?! No , she can't be! They are supposed to be married in a few months.
Oh this can't be happening! '
'Angela! I'm sorry! Baby, please come back to me!'
The room started to swim and everything went black.
"Sir?! Mr Micelli?!"
Tony opened his eyes. The two officers were leaning over him. He then realized he was on the floor.
"What happened?" He looked around in confusion.
"You fainted."Officer Warner informed him.
"Luckily you weren't near the banister" Officer Arthur said.
"Can you get up?" Officer Warner offered Tony his hand.
Tony nodded and the two officers pulled him to his feet.
"Dad, maybe you should sit down." Sam said her voice filled with worry.
"No, no. I'm fine. I mean-no I'm not fine." He shook his head.
He turned to the officers. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, Ms. Bower is presumed dead."
'Presumed dead? She was presumed dead? He realized he must have heard the officer wrong. The guilt he was feeling about walking out on her twice and lying to her must have taken a toll on him. He breathed a small sigh of relief.'
"Okay, what do you mean presumed dead? Where is she?"
"We don't know. Her car was found at the bottom of a cliff late last night. We ran the license plate and it is registered to her."
"Where was this?" Tony asked.
"About 20 miles west of here."
"But, Angela, wasn't in the car?" Sam asked.
"No ma'am. There was no sign of her. From what we can gather she must have walked off."
"Okay, so she's out there somewhere! So what are you doing here then?" Tony demanded.
"Mr Micelli, we have had people searching all night and this morning. Believe me we have this under control."
"Well I'm going to go look for her too." He turned to Mona and Sam. "I'll call Philly, Eddie, and the rest of the guys to help."
"Mr Micelli. We assure you we have this under control."
Tony turned to the officers. "I'm sure you do. But Angela-she's-" He took a deep breath. "She's the woman I love and we're supposed to get married in a few months."
"We didn't know that."
"Congratulations."
"Yeah, and the thing is the last few weeks we have been going through a rough patch. And when she left yesterday she was so angry with me. I don't-I can't let her last memory of me being what a jerk I've been lately. I have to find her. I need to find her."
"Okay, we understand." Officer Arthur said.
"We also found her purse at the scene. It must have flown out of the car when she crashed. " Officer Warner told them. "It's currently at the station. "
"So Angela just walked off without her purse or any identification?" Sam asked.
"Yes, and that is what concerns us. She was nowhere in the area. And the fact that she didn't take her purse with her, the only conclusion we have is that she was confused and disoriented."
"Oh my God. This is all my fault!" Tony moaned.
"Sir, this was a tragic accident. With the rain last night.." Officer Arthur assured him.
"No, if I hadn't been such an ass she wouldn't have been on that road. She was probably so angry at me that she lost control of her car- and- " He squeezed his eyes shut and took a few calming breaths. He opened his eyes. "I have to find her."
"All right. We'll be in touch.' Officer Warner said.
"Thank you." Sam said.
The officers told them goodbye and then left.
"Okay, I'm going to call Philly." He went to the phone and dialed.
RING! RING!
"Yo! This is Philly! "
"Philly, it's Tony."
"Hey Micelli! So when are we going .."
""Philly! I need your help."
"My help?"
"Yeah, and Eddie's, Joey's, Pee Wee's, Vinnie, and Tiny's"
"What's going on?"
"It's Angela. She was in a bad car accident last night. Her car went over a cliff. The police were just here and they said she wasn't anywhere."
Philly plopped in his chair.
"Tony, are you-are you sure about this?"
'Yes, and I need your help to look for her. The police said they have been looking all night. But, I need to look for her too. I can't just sit here twiddling my thumbs while she's out there."
"Say no more. I'll round up the guys and we'll be there as soon as we can."
"Thanks. See you later!"
They said goodbye and hung up.
"Okay they're coming."
"Dad, what about Jonathan?"
"Oh Sam you're right. I can't have him hearing about this from the wrong person "
"I could go and pick him up."
Tony looked at Mona who had been uncharastically quiet since the officers had been there. He motioned to her with his head and gave Sam a look. Sam looked at her and nodded.
"Thanks Sam but I'll see if Isabelle can pick him up." He picked the phone up and dialed her number.
RING! RING!
"Hello?"
"Isabelle, it's me."
"Tony! Did she come home?"
"No, she didn't. The police were just here."
"Oh my God! Tony, please don't tell me ..."
"Her car went over a cliff. They found her purse but she wasn't there."
"So they think she just wandered off?"
"Yes. The fact that she left without her purse-well all they could think was she was confused and disoriented."
"Oh my God. Is there anything I can do?"
"Yes, can you go and pick Jonathan up from school? I don't want him hearing about this from somewhere or someone else."
"You got it!"
"Okay, I'll call the school and let them know you're coming. Thanks Isabelle."
"You're welcome! Bye!"
"Bye!"
Tony hung up and called the school. He informed the secretary that Isabelle would be picking Jonathan up in a few minutes.
"Okay that's taken care of. He went to the coat rack and grabbed his jacket. "Sam, I'm going to go look around for a while."
"Okay Dad."
Tony left and went out to his jeep. He started the engine and pulled out of the driveway.
"Mona, do you want me to fix you a cup of tea?"
She didn't say anything. She just stared straight ahead.
Sam didn't know what she should do. It scared her how quiet Mona was. It was like she was in a trance.
Sam put her arm around her. Now all they could do was wait.
About Ten Minutes Later:
Jonathan came bursting through the front door with Isabelle behind him.
"Sam, what's going on?!"
Sam got up and walked over to him.
"Something bad happened but I think Dad should tell you."
"Well where is he?"
"He's out."
'He's out? What do you mean? Why?" He fired off the questions to her.
"Jonathan I..'
"Please Sam! Mrs Ferguson wouldn't tell me. I'm not a little kid. What is going on?"
Sam and Isabelle exchanged looks. Sam thought back to when she was Jonathan's age and wanted to be treated like an adult.
"Okay, I'll tell you. Your Mom was in a car accident last night."
"An accident? Where? Why didn't anyone tell me sooner?"
"We just found out a little while ago. The police said her car went over a cliff."
Jonathan collapsed in the desk chair.
"So she's at the hospital?"
'No, she isn't."
"She's not? Oh my God she's not.. His eyes filled with tears.
Sam knelt down in front of him.
"Jonathan look at me."
He wiped his eyes and did what she asked.
"The police told us she wasn't in the car. They think she wandered off. They have been looking for her all night . Dad went looking for her too and Philly and the guys are coming to look for her too."
"But, she just wandered off? Why?"
Sam stood up. "They think she was confused and disoriented. They found her purse near the car."
Jonathan nodded, shocked to say anymore.
Sam motioned to Isabelle.
"What is it?"
"I'm worried about Mona. She hasn't said anything since the police were here."
Isabelle looked over at Mona. "She's probably in shock. I'll go over and see."
"Thanks."
Isabelle walked over and sat down next to Mona.
"Hey Mona, are you okay?"
She didn't answer her.
Isabelle took Mona's wrist in her hand and took her pulse. It was a little high but that was to be suspected. She got up and went over to Sam.
"Her pulse is a little high but that's not unusual given the circumstances."
Sam nodded. "Okay. Thanks."
"I'm going to call Wendy."
"All right."
Isabelle picked the phone up and called Wendy. She told her what happened and Wendy said she would be over as soon as possible.
"Okay Wendy will be here shortly."
Sam sat down next to Mona while Isabelle sat in the chair near the kitchen.
They waited in silence.
After about fifteen minutes the doorbell rang and Sam answered it. Wendy came in and hugged her.
"Are you okay?" Wendy asked.
"No, I'm so worried."
Wendy nodded and walked further in.
"Hello everyone."
"Hi Mrs Whittner."
Wendy put her arm around Jonathan and exchanged glances with Isabelle. Isabelle shook her head.
Wendy sat down in the chair near the front door.
No one said a word. They were all too overwhelmed. The same questions kept flowing through their heads.
Where was she?
Was she hurt?
How badly was she hurt?
Why did she leave her purse?
The front door opened and Tony walked in. He looked completely defeated.
"Tony! Did you find anything?" Isabelle asked.
Tony shook his head. "No, nothing."
He collapsed on the couch next to Sam. "I looked everywhere. I swear I looked everywhere but she…."
"We know you did, Tony. " Wendy assured him.
DING DONG! DING DONG!
"That must be the guys"
Tony answered the door and Mrs Rossini, Philly, Eddie, Joey, Pee Wee, Vinnie, Tiny walked in.
"Oh Tony! Philly told me what happened." Mrs Rossini put her arms around his neck and pulled him to her.
"I figured you would like to have her here." Philly said.
"Thanks pal."
Philly nodded.
"Thanks for coming Mrs. R. he pulled back. And you guys too."
"We're happy to help." Pee Wee assured him.
"Okay, let's divide up in teams. Philly you, Eddie, and Pee Wee come with me. Vinnie, you Tiny, and Joey can.."
"I'm going too." Jonathan said.
"Jonathan buddy. I can't let you. You're too young."
Jonathan stood up. "This is my Mother. I have to do something!"
Tony placed his hands on his shoulders. 'I know. I know you're scared. We all are. But I need you to stay here and look after your Grandma." They looked over at Mona.
Jonathan sighed. "Okay."
Tony hugged him. "I promise. I'll do everything I can."
Jonathan nodded and sat back down.
'Okay guys let's go."
"Tony?"
Tony turned around. Mona had gotten up and was walking towards him.
"Yes Mona?"
"You better find my little girl." her voice shook.
Tony pulled her to him.
'I will Mona."
Mona sniffled and hugged him tightly.
"All right guys. Let's do this!"
The guys went back outside. Tony looked around the room and then followed after them.
"Hold on sweetheart. I'm coming!"
###########################################
"Nurse, what is her blood pressure?"
"140 over 65."
"Damn that's still too high." He shook his head.
"What do you want us to do?"
"Keep monitoring her. "
"Yes, Doctor."
He motioned for another nurse to follow him.
"I need you to do a complete blood work on her. "
"Yes, Doctor."
He rubbed his hand over his face.
"Doctor, you look exhausted. Maybe you should get some rest."
"Thanks, but I can't."
"You haven't stopped since you brought her here."
"I appreciate your concern but until she wakes up-I can't-I just have to stay near her."
She placed her arm on his shoulder.
"She was lucky you were there otherwise.."
"I know."
"I'll go run those tests."
"Thank you."
She went back into the room.
He went down the hall to his office and collapsed on the couch he kept in there.
The memory of the night before came crashing through his mind as the events swirled around him….
