"What in the world is going on out here?" Mrs Rossini asked coming out of the kitchen drying her hands on a dish towel. She spotted Tony and the rest of the guys and walked over.
"Oh Tony! Did you find her?"
He just shook his head, his eyes downcast.
"No, we didn't Mrs. Rossini." Eddie said.
"Oh? Oh no. Tony, I am so sorry." She put her arm around him.
"Wait a minute! What was Grandma talking about? How is Mom's accident your fault?"
Tony sighed and sat down in the chair closest to the front door.
Jonathan and Sam sat on the couch. Everyone else stayed standing.
"Tony? What's going on? Why is Grandma so angry with you?"
"Because it is all my fault. I'm the reason your Mother is missing."
"But why? It wasn't your fault it was raining!"
Tony looked at him. His features were so much like Angela's. Sure he had Michael's love for exotic animals but looking at him was like looking at Angela.
Oh God this was going to destroy him!
"Your Mother was angry with me because I walked out on her."
"What? You mean at the poker game when you left with Vinnie, Tiny, and Ernie and stayed with Sam?"
Tony shook his head. "No, well yeah that was part of it. When we were in the kitchen she really let me have it. She commented on how we were a bunch of guys flirting with girls, playing poker, and drinking beer. "
"Well that was what you were doing."
"Yeah, I know. But I got so angry that yes I did leave but I came home the next morning and we had it out again."
"Oh, so then Mom walked out on you?"
"No, I did."
"What? But you said you came back. I'm confused Tony."
Tony sighed. "When we were having it out I complained how I never had any free time. Angela had us booked practically every single day. All I wanted was a little free time. "
"Okay, I can understand that."
"Yes, so we went through the calendar and made some compromises but then she noticed that neither one of us had anything planned that day. But I had forgotten to put Golf With Ray.
But I told her that I would cancel and do whatever she wanted to. "
"Let me guess you didn't?" Jonathan asked, his words clipped.
"No, she uh-she started gushing about going shopping and modeling clothes for me." He rubbed his hand over his face. "And all I could see was me trailing behind her like a puppy dog carrying her purse and packages. So after she left the kitchen I hightailed it out the back door and ran into Mona. I lied and told her that Angela was going shopping and left."
"So let me get this straight. You walked out on my Mom, then you told her you would do whatever she wanted and then you walked out on her again?!"
Tony nodded. "Yes, when I came home Mona told me how angry she was. And that's why what happened is all my fault. If I had gone shopping with her none of this never would have happened."
He looked at Jonathan. His eyes and face were impassive. It was like someone had drained all the emotion out of him. Then like a snap of a finger his face grew red and his eyes narrowed.
He stood up and glared down at Tony. He was breathing hard, his eyes tearing. "You…you asshole! My Mother is probably dead because you lied to her and walked out on her!" his voice shook.
Normally Tony would have reprimanded him for calling him names but he let it slide.
Tony stood up too and reached out to him but Jonathan slapped his hand away.
"Don't you touch me! Don't you ever touch me! Grandma is right. This is all your fault! " Jonathan screamed at him. With a choked sob he ran up the stairs. A few moments later his bedroom door slammed.
Tony sat back down. "Son of a bitch!" He put his head in his hands. He looked up a moment later and apologized to Sam and Mrs. Rossini.
Sam shook her head. "Dad, don't worry about it. "
Mrs. Rossini sat down next to her. "Tony, normally I would box your ears but forget it. I.."
"Hey Ma, could I talk to you in the kitchen for a minute?"
She looked at Joey. "Joey, can't it wait?"
"Uh no. It's important."
She sighed. "Okay."
They went into the kitchen.
"Okay, whatever this is about, it better be important."
"It is. Here you better sit down."
They sat down.
"Okay, out with it."
"When we were searching for Angela Tony-he-" Joey sighed.
"Tony what?" Spill it Joey!"
"He hit Tiny."
"He hit Tiny? What are you talking about?'
"Vinnie and Tiny were telling the rest of us about how they were convinced Angela was controlling Tony. They were bitching-sorry Ma-,about her and then Tiny said that she used to be cool but was now an annoying stick in the mud. And before anyone could blink Tony punched him in the mouth."
"Oh, my God."
"Yeah. Eddie convinced them-Vinnie and Tiny to leave before things got any worse. And then we finally convinced Tony to come home to get some rest. He didn't want to at first but I threatened to call you."
She smiled sadly. "Yeah, I bet that did the trick."
"Ma, I'm worried about him. We all are. "
She nodded and stood up. "I am too. He is absolutely devastated. I'm glad I bought my suitcase. I really need to stay here for a few days."
He stood up too. "I think that's a good idea. I'll go and get it for you."
"Thank you sweetheart. Oh and Joey?"
"Yes Ma. I will look after Fiorello."
She squeezed his cheeks and they left the kitchen and went back into the living room. Tony was staring blankly into space. Joey went out over to Eddie and asked for his keys. He handed them to him and Joey went out and grabbed his Mom's suitcase and brought it back into the house. He sat down in front of the staircase.
"Thank you Joey."
"You're welcome."
"Mrs. R. Are you staying?" Sam asked.
"Yes, I think you all really need me right now."
Tony snapped out of his stupor. " , I really appreciate it but you don't.."
She held her hand up. "Don't try to talk me out of it. My mind is made up."
Tony knew it was no use arguing with her.
"Okay, thanks."
"Uh, Tone we're sorry for bailing on you but we need to get back to Brooklyn." Philly said.
Tony stood up and turned to them.
"Yeah, it's fine. Thanks guys for all your help."
"You're welcome." Eddie gave him a quick hug and the others followed suit. They said their goodbyes and walked out.
Tony turned back around.
"Well I guess I should.."
Mrs. Rossini cut him off. "The only thing I want you to do right now is go into the kitchen and eat something. "
"But.."
She gave him her don't argue with me look.
He sighed and went into the kitchen.
"Come on Sam."
They followed after him and found him sitting at the table. Sam got a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with water. She set it in front of him and then sat down beside him. Mrs. Rossini got out a plate from the cupboard and some silverware. She opened the oven door and took out the pan of lasagna she had heating in there. She scooped some onto the plate and sat it in front of him.
"Mangia!"
He reluctantly picked his fork up and began eating. After a few minutes he put his fork down.
"Thanks Mrs. R."
"You're welcome." She looked at him pensively. "Joey told me what happened with Tiny."
"What? What happened with Tiny?" Sam asked.
"I hit him."
"You did what?!"
"I hit him Sam. I punched him in the mouth."
"But….why?!" Sam was flabbergasted.
Because he insulted Angela and I just lost it."
"Oh wow. Dad. That's…"
"Horrible? Awful? Not like me? Yeah, I know.. But, I just saw red when he insulted her." He picked up his glass and downed it.
"I'm going crazy here. I don't know where the hell Angela is. She is probably hurt and confused and I can't do a damn thing about it!"
"Tony, you're just going to have to keep the faith that Angela will come home."
"I wish I could believe that ." He stood up.
"I'm going to try and get some sleep. Good night."
"Night Dad."
"Good night Tony."
Tony left the kitchen, the door swinging behind him.
"Mrs. R, I'm worried about him. What are we going to do if Angela never comes home?"
"I don't know Sam. I don't know."
Tony stood outside Jonathan's door, his hand raised to knock. After a few moments he put it back down and walked over to Angela's door. He looked back over at Jonathan's and sighed. They really needed to talk but he figured now wasn't the right time. Tomorrow he would have a long talk with Mona and Jonathan. He understood their anger at him-hell he was angrier at himself than both of them combined. He turned back around and stared at Angela's door. He had been staying in there the last few months but maybe he should go back to his room. It wouldn't have so many memories of the two of them. But being in her room would make him feel closer to her. With a slight hesitation he turned the knob and opened then shut the door.
His eyes immediately went to the robe flung carelessly on the bed. It was like she had just thrown it anywhere not caring where it landed. He realized it was the robe she had been wearing after he came home from staying out all night. His eyes filled with tears. She had probably been so excited to spend the day with him she just threw her robe off so she could hurry and get ready. And while she had been doing that, what had he done? Oh that's right he had run out on her like a bratty child.
He needed a hot shower and he needed one now. He stripped his clothes off and threw them in the hamper. He turned the water on and waited for it to heat up. He grabbed a towel from the closet and put it on the sink edge. He stepped in and closed the shower curtain. He stood under the faucet, the water mixing with his tears. His body ached. His heart ached. What was he going to do if she never came home? After he quickly washed himself he turned the water off and stepped back out. He grabbed the towel and dried himself off and then brushed his teeth. He grabbed a pair of his sweats that he kept in a drawer and slipped them on. He crawled into bed picking up Angela's robe. Oh God it smelled like her. Her own unique and natural scent that had been driving crazy for years. His tears dripped down his cheeks and landed on her robe.
"Where are you baby? Where are you?!"
ANGEL LAURA CLINIC
"HELP! HELP ME!"
Jeremy woke up with a start. He looked around confused.
"Damn it! Not the dream again!" He stood up and rubbed his back. He thought they were finally going away. But finding that woman had brought it all back. He couldn't believe how much she…it was just uncanny. Was there a reason he had found her? Was God giving him a second chance? He went to his desk and opened the top drawer and pulled out a small box. He left his office and went down the hall where Angela was.
Kate was making a notification on her chart.
"How is she?"
"Her blood pressure is down."
That's good. Is Barbara back with the test results yet?"
"Right here Doctor." Barbara came into the room and handed them to him.
He looked them over. "Everything appears to be okay."
"Yeah, except she hasn't woken up yet." Kate said.
"Hey, look why don't the two of you go home. I can watch over her for the night."
"Are you sure?" Barbara asked.
He nodded.
"Okay. Good night."
"Good night."
They left and he pulled a chair up next to the bed. He brushed his hand over her cheek, He picked up her left hand and slid her engagement ring off. He then unclasped the necklace from around her neck. He placed both items in the small box. He sat back and reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a picture that he always kept in there close to his heart.
It was a picture of him and a woman. They were looking into each other's eyes with a big smile on both their faces. They were so happy and so in love. It was like they were the only two people in the world and no one would ever come between them.
The woman was the spitting image of Angela.
