Jordan- 12
Word had spread fast about Hank getting released from jail, when 51 had heard it they couldn't believe it. Casey was more pissed. He was sure he wouldn't have to deal with the former detective. But he was wrong.
"There's no easy way to say this but Voight's out of jail" Antonio told all of 51.
"Are they insane?!" Gabby asked her brother.
"This has to be a joke" Kelly spoke up.
"No joke. And they promoted him to Sergeant and gave him his own unit. Intelligence. He's gonna have everyone watch him. Even me" Antonio informed them.
The sour look on Casey's face just remained the same, part of him hoped Voight would stay in jail.
"So does Jordan know about him? And what he's done" Shay said.
"No. And please whatever you all do I still need this under lock and key. Jordan doesn't wanna see her father as a bad guy"
"Only he is," Casy said snarky.
"Casey please, he didn't tell her so people wouldn't hound her. I saw her when he was going to prison. That little girl lost everything. Don't start another battle"
All Casey did was walk off to his office and slam the door.
The Fire Lieutenant was broken out of his thoughts by a young girl's voice.
"Casey! Casey!" It was Jordan and next to her was Hank.
The Lieutenant froze in his place, Hank gave a small smirk but quickly dropped it so his daughter wouldn't see. Neither of them could tell Jordan the truth. It would crush her.
For the time being both men would have to act around the preteen.
"Hey Jo, who's this with you?" Casey responded, already knowing the answer. He could keep this up as much as Hank could.
"This is my dad, Sergeant Voight. He now runs Intelligence" It was clear Jordan was proud of her father.
"That's amazing"
Hank couldn't help but smile at his daughter. "Sweetheart why don't you head inside so I can talk to Casey for a minute"
She nodded and ran inside, once the 12 year old was out of sight and ear shot the two men exchanged looks.
"Sergeant. What'd you do to get that?" Casey asked bluntly.
"That's only for me to know. I also know while I was inside, you all looked out for Jordan" Hank replied.
"We did. Antonio told us she didn't know anything. She still doesn't. She didn't deserve people hounding or badgering her"
"That means a lot to me Casey. Jordan hasn't had it easy. Growing up with no mother, losing me and my son to jail. I didn't want my stuff following her"
"Jo's a good kid. We didn't want her getting hurt"
"I want you to know I greatly appreciate you all watching out for Jordan when you didn't have to"
"She's a kid your actions are yours not hers"
Kelly and Boden had gone out to see Hank talking with Casey; they had grown cautious and went over.
"Is everything ok here?" Boden asked.
"Everything is just fine, Chief" Hank spoke first. "I was telling Casey, I appreciate you all looking out for Jordan when you didn't have to"
"It was our pleasure"
"Jordan's a good kid. She didn't deserve to be treated any differently" Kelly chimed in.
"I also appreciate you all not telling her anything. She's been hurt enough this would kill her" Hank continued.
They nodded, Jordan skipped out and the older father had left with his daughter. Casey wasn't buying a single word of what Hank had said. He may play that act around Jordan; he wasn't falling for it.
Kelly saw the look on his best friend's face. "What's on your mind?"
"I have a feeling Voight's up to something. He can play that act around Jordan to spare her feelings but I'm not buying anything else he said"
"What are you gonna do follow him?"
"That's exactly what I'll do"
"Casey, I don't think you should do that," Boden told him. "Voight can still be a danger"
"We'll see" Casey looked to his chief.
"Well you're not doing this alone, if you want someone to go with you I will" Kelly said to his friend.
Casey knew Kelly wouldn't give this up. "Alright, after shift I'm gonna follow him"
"I hope you know what you're doing" Boden told his two Lieutenants.
The two men nodded. After a very long 24 hours later Matt and Kelly left, they went to get coffee and then to find Voight. Voight was just leaving his house and he was taking Jordan to school.
Matt kept a distance behind Voight, he wouldn't tell Kelly how he got Voight's address all he said was, he had his ways. Kelly had left it at that. The two fire Lieutenants kept a safe distance and followed the new Sergeant.
"Casey, I gotta ask. What are you hoping to get out of this?" Kelly asked, breaking the silence.
"To prove he hasn't changed. He only plays that innocent look around Jordan" Casey answered, not taking his eyes off the road.
"What if he did change? People can change Matt"
"Not people like him. He planted drugs on me Kelly! He nearly cost me everything if I didn't change my report on him. He made mine and Hallie's life hell"
"And what if you expose him in front of Jordan? That little girl had a rough time within the past year. You will crush her"
He tried to let those words sink in, was destroying Jordan's happiness worth this stupid vendetta? Was it worth destroying a little girl's image of her father? They all had seen how she was with him in jail. Sad, upset, depressed. Was it worth bringing that back?
Casey just drove. Hank had dropped his daughter off at school. Jordan unbuckled herself and kissed her father's cheek.
"Bye daddy"
"Have a good day sweetheart" Hank kissed her head.
Jordan grabbed her backpack getting out the car and going inside her school, the older father smiled and he watched as she made it inside. He then took off heading for the district. Matt and Kelly followed.
"It doesn't look like he's doing anything Casey," Kelly told his friend.
"Not yet," Casey replied.
"Matt, maybe you just gotta let this go. He dropped Jo off at school and he's going to work. Maybe he's changed and you gotta move on"
"I can't let it go Kelly. Until it happens to you, you won't understand"
"You already put him in jail. You and Antonio. He's out. Antonio said he'll keep an eye on him. Leave it alone"
"I'm sorry Kelly but I can't"
They arrived at the district. Hank went inside, Kelly and Matt watched him, Matt watched with a glare. A loud knock on the window made the two men jump, Antonio had knocked on Matt's window. He rolled it down.
"Have you two lost your minds?" Antonio asked.
"He has," Kelly said pointing to Matt. "I haven't"
The senior detective gave the Truck Lieutenant a sharp look. "I told you, let me handle this"
"I can't let this go Antonio. I just can't" Matt told him.
"You can and you will. You're gonna be playing with dynamite again Casey and maybe next time I won't be able to help you. I'm in Voight's unit. I'll keep an eye out for him. Just go home"
He sighed. He'd be back later. "Fine"
"And don't come back Casey, I mean it"
Matt drove off and took Kelly home. When Matt got home, he threw his jacket down. He grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and chugged it. There was a knock at the door, it was Gabby. Matt let her in.
"Hey" Gabby said.
"Hey. I take it Antonio told you?" Matt replied.
"He did. Matt, I don't want you getting caught up in that stuff again"
"He's not going to change Gabby. People like that don't change"
"You don't know that"
"You can't be serious, you were all for putting him in jail"
"I was but, when Antonio was shot I went to him hoping he'd give me information. Antonio took my debt to Hank"
"Help me follow him"
"It'll be a matter of time before he slips up"
"Matt you're not at all worried about Jordan and her finding out? If she catches you she'll ask questions"
"She should know who her father is and what kind of man he is"
"And what if he's not that kind of man anymore? You're only seeing him from one side. A bad guy. That's not right Matt"
"Come with me later and find out"
The younger Dawsom sighed and just nodded. Around 2:30 Matt went back to Jordan's school and waited across the street, he acted as if he was looking at directions on his phone. Gabby looked at him.
"You do realize you'll break that little girl's heart if she finds out like this right" Gabby told him.
"How can he do the things he's done and still act like father of the year?" Casey replied.
"I'm not defending him so don't act as if I am. Hank was protecting her from the truth, Jordan already has it hard. No mom in the picture, losing her brother to prison, losing him right after her brother. She's lost so much for her age. I'm surprised she's holding it together. He knew if Jordan knew it would break her and crush her. He is the only parent she has and she loves him to death, she'd do anything to protect and defend him. He was just a father protecting his daughter"
Matt looked out the window, when Jordan ran to her father she hugged him tightly. Hank wrapped his little girl in a hug and kissed her head. The older father had a huge smile on his face. Gabby watched to see if the look on Matt's face would change.
Once he saw Hank getting in the car and left he followed keeping a safe distance. Hank had stopped to get him and his daughter some food for dinner. Matt followed him inside the place, he checked his phone acting normal. He looked back up and Hank was gone. He frowned and looked outside to see his car still there.
When he turned forward again he just about jumped when Hank stood there with a mused look on his face.
"You got guts Casey, I'll give you that" Hank spoke.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Matt replied, keeping it cool.
"You following me. I'm not stupid nor was I born yesterday"
"Just seeing if you'll slip up"
"I'm not that person anymore Casey, believe whatever you want. I'm gonna do right by my daughter"
"You should have always been doing that but you weren't"
"Until you're a parent, you'll never understand what I have to do to protect my children"
"That may be true. But a good parent doesn't cover stuff up. A good parent doesn't threaten people to keep quiet. A good parent makes their kid own up to what they did wrong. Your son caused an accident that paraylzed a young kid. What if he had Jordan in that car? What if she was paralyze because of him?"
"Watch yourself Casey"
"It'll be a matter of time before Jordan finds out"
"She won't find out"
Casey just walked away before he hit Hank. He still wasn't buying the whole innocent act. The older man may have everyone else fooled but not him. He wasn't falling for it. His mind had gone back to Jordan. What if she had found out? That little girl would be broken.
He was dead set on outing Hank again, he wasn't even considering Jordan's feelings. Her father had gotten taken once because of him and Antonio. And he was dead set on yanking him from his daughter a second time. That could destroy her even more. Maybe he should give up.
He would give up after he found his proof. Over the next few weeks he'd follow Hank. The entire time Jordan was with him. Matt had watched carefully from a distance, a look of shock on his face. Boy was he wrong. Hank wasn't going to slip up on anything.
Just being with his young daughter had brought Hank some comfort after being away from her for so long. A huge smile planted on his face. Jordan was enjoying all the time with her father. She was definitely making up for all the lost time while he was in prison.
Matt just watched as the father and daughter kicked around the soccer ball in the park, maybe everyone was right. Hank has changed. He does wanna turn a new leaf for his daughter. He does wanna do right by her. The Truck Lieutenant had been set on this vendetta and let it blind him, it blinded him from the truth.
A knock on his window broke him from his thoughts, Antonio was there with a cup of coffee and gave it to him once Matt rolled the window down.
"How'd you know I be here?" Matt asked, taking the cup of steaming coffee.
"Jordan loves coming to the park on Saturdays to play soccer. She and Hank have been coming here every Saturday since he got out. It's their spot. What are you doing here?" Antonio replied, sipping the coffee already knowing the answer.
"Seeing if I was wrong"
"Wrong about Voight slipping up?"
He just nodded. "I was hell bent on it but he's right. He's not about that anymore. He's turning over a new leaf for Jordan"
"One thing I know for sure about Hank Voight, he loves his children and will do just about anything for them. He'll die for his children. When I arrested him he told me to leave Jordan alone that she didn't know anything. He was right that little girl didn't know anything of what he did and he never will"
Matt drank some of his coffee as he just watched the father and daughter. "When Jordan would come to 51, she'd always be upset or depressed about not having her dad. Her face lit up when she talked about him, when she told us about the visits"
"She worships her father. His children are what keep him whole and sane. I don't even wanna begin to know what would happen if he lost them"
"Hell would be unleashed in the streets. I was so blinded by everything I never saw the bigger picture. This side of him"
Antonio saw the father and daughter. "I know how you feel. When I first found out he had a daughter I couldn't believe it. He doesn't tell people for good reason. Being a cop ain't easy. Being a cop's kid, twice as hard. If Hank's enemies knew about her. She'd have one hell of a target on her back"
"She'll have a whole army at 51 to protect her if they even try"
"51 and the 21st"
Matt had given a small chuckle, he walked over to the father and daughter. Jordan saw Matt coming and waved to him. Hank looked over with a mused look, the preteen had taken the hint and went to play with the soccer ball staying within view of her father.
"I should make you a detective, you make a good detail" Hank said to Casey.
"I'm sorry. I was hell bent on taking you down. I realized I was wrong" Casey replied. He held his hand out.
Hank shook his hand. From that day Matt and Hank swore to let it all go and move forward with a fresh start. It was the start of a new friendship.
