Kai leaned against the wall of the LaserTag building. He had hidden himself away behind one of the black glass entrance doors. Everyone else had either left or was at least trying to figure out what to do next. Daichi, who was telling anyone who would listen, really wanted to go to M&M world. Kai could not think of anything worse.
He considered returning to his hotel room, but that was boring, especially when he had passed so many interesting looking places along the way. Not to mention the fact that Tyson had split away from the group, sulking off undoubtedly on his way back to the hotel to plead his case with Hilary. Kai would rather like to avoid bumping into him when he was in such a mood.
Now that he thought about it, Kai recollected there was an alleyway where he was sure he had seen a cat. He was about to set off in its general direction when a low whisper carried in the late afternoon air.
"I'll be fine! We've talked about this already!"
"No, you told us your plan and didn't let us say anything! I really don't think you should go, its dangerous!"
Kai glanced sideways. It was Isobel and Tim. He swiveled his eyes back to the floor and pretended that he hadn't heard anything, he wasn't sure if they could see him behind the tinted glass.
"You should wait until Issac can go with you!"
"Yes well Issac isn't speaking to me! I'll be fine- I can handle myself, you just worry too much!" said Isobel.
"No," said Tim, "I worry a normal amount, you don't worry enough!" And he grabbed her by the shoulders to give her a little shake. "What if you don't come back? Ah man!" He let out an anxious breath and ran his hands though his hair. "I should come with you, yes! I really don't think you should go alone!"
"No!" Isobel was almost laughing, "it's too dangerous!"
"Exactly! That's what I've just been trying to tell you!" Tims voice rose slightly.
Isobel made a hushing noise and then patted the holster that contained her beyblade. "I have help!"
Interest truly piqued, Kai watched as for a few more long minutes Tim and Isobel continued the conversation over and over again until finally, Tim gave in, gave her a hug and left.
Isobel glanced around and then walked off down the street without a backwards glance.
Kai stood there filled with both intrigue and apprehension. The intrigue won.
He strode after her, dipping behind pillars and phone boxes as he went in an attempt to avoid being seen. It wasn't long before she turned down the next road, and then the next, and then another. Kai frowned. They had somehow ended up back outside LaserTag. How strange.
They continued, Isobel walking speedily ahead and Kai following at a safe distance, but again she took the same roads and they ended straight back in front of LaserTag. She then repeated the route for a third time. Kai wondered if she was doing it on purpose, maybe she had spotted him after all.
He leaned against the wall to allow her to get a few more steps ahead before trailing after her again. She stopped and Kai jumped behind a man carrying a stack of newspapers. She stopped again, turning back this time. Kai sat down at a bus stop and looked away.
They carried on like this until again, for the fourth time, they both found themselves stood outside LaserTag and Kai resumed his casual lean against the wall behind the door.
Isobel doubled back.
"You know I know you're following me, right?" she said, striding towards him.
Damn it. Deep down he had known he was caught, no normal unsuspecting person would walk around in a circle four times for no reason.
Isobel appeared around the edge of the door with her hands on her hips.
"What?" said Kai, tearing his eyes away from the floor and blinking at her as if he had no idea what she was on about.
She frowned.
"Don't act like that after you've just followed me around in a loop no less than four times!"
"I don't know what you mean," he said stubbornly, looking away. How annoying. Kai was normally very good at stalking people, he hated to think he was slipping.
Isobel pulled a face and her eyebrows rose so high that Kai wondered if they might fly away.
"How long have you known?" he asked, giving in.
"Since we passed that man carrying the papers to his van. The first time."
"Oh." Kai frowned, and then before he could resist. "I know its none of my business, but, where are you going?"
"As you said, it's none of your business."
"I heard what Tim said. He's worried about you."
"Well he shouldn't be. I'm perfectly capable."
"Of what?"
"Why are you so interested?" she asked stamping her foot impatiently.
Kai gave a short sniff. "Well, you pointed to your beyblade."
She sighed angrily. "Not this again, why do you care so much?"
Kai shrugged, "you beat Brooklyn."
"So did you," she also shrugged.
"Yeah but-" Kai had been about to admit that his battle with Brooklyn had almost killed him yet Isobel had got away with a few mere stitches but he promptly interrupted by a set of cars that parked up right next to them, three men springing out with cameras in hand.
"You were right!" One of them shouted as more and more cars arrived. "HE'S HERE!" Paparazzi swarmed around them.
Both Kai and Isobel were backed into a corner and Kai looked around helplessly for an escape route.
"Kai!" one of the reporters yelled directly into his face, thrusting a microphone forwards. "Have you decided whether or not you're going to take over your grandfathers seat as CEO when you turn 18?"
There was so much flashing. He didn't know where to look.
"Oh- go AWAY!" Isobel shouted and then, without warning, grabbed Kai by the hand, pushed the black door that he had been using as a shelter aside and pulled him down the road.
They swerved between pedestrians, many of whom gave looks of surprise or shouts as they swept past.
"Excuse me, coming through, don't mind us!" Isobel called as they ran.
Behind, Kai could hear the paparazzi bumping into people, he was sure that one of them had fallen and another was wailing, "nooo! My camera!" Kai did not feel the least bit sympathetic.
"Down here!" Isobel shouted, dragging him down an alleyway full of bins. She let go of his hand, climbed up ontop of one of the bins and then pulled herself up onto a roof which turned out to be balcony and beckoned to Kai to follow. He took one last look at the paparazzi and followed.
"Where are we goin-" he began.
"Hey!" shouted an old lady whose apartment the balcony must have belonged to.
"Sorry! Running from paparazzi! I swear, you'll never see us again!" Isobel shouted politely as they hopped down and onto the roof of a shop which had a staircase back down to the ground. When they reached it they both cast around and exchanged a hectic yet excited look and sped on down another busy main road.
"Lets get the train!" and she led him down a wide sweeping steps with a large London Underground sign above it.
"Do you have an oyster card?" Isobel asked hurriedly, heading towards the barriers.
"A what?"
"Its a travel card- doesn't matter. I'll get you a ticket!" and she doubled back.
"Wha- but I haven't brought any mone-" but before he could get his words out Isobel had walked up to a ticket machine, jabbed at the screen and fed it some money.
It spat out a baby pink ticket which she handed to him. He briefly had time to read 'Day Travelcard - Zones 1-2' before following her to the ticket barriers.
"Where are we going?" He demanded, looking back to see if anyone was following them and then to the tube map on the wall which looked extremely confusing.
They boarded a huge lift which swiftly took them down.
"We're getting the Piccadilly line." Isobel pointed to a navy blue line on a tube map. "To Knightsbridge!" she explained, following the line with her finger. "It's the same line, no changes."
"Right." He agreed, even though he had no clue how the tube worked.
It was incredibly warm and windy down on the underground. He could hear trains echoing and screeching as they rushed along the tunnels.
"Oh, the trains arrived!" Isobel squealed as soon as they reached the platform, again grabbing him by the hand. Kai had a feeling he was going to have to stop her from doing that.
They ran and made it onto the train just in time as the doors closed.
'Please mind the gap between the train and the platform edge.' Sounded a pleasant voice followed by, 'This is a Piccadilly line service to Heathrow Terminals calling at Piccadilly Circus, Green Park, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge-'
"What's at Knightsbridge?" Kai asked.
The train was packed and they had to stand close together like sardines.
"Rich, snobby people," Isobel grinned.
Kai quirked an eyebrow. He hoped she wasn't talking about him because as demonstrated by his inability to purchase his own ticket, he didn't have a penny to his name.
The train lurched and Kai was catapulted forwards, almost squashing Isobel against the door. They both grabbed a handrail to steady themselves, giving each other an apologetic grimace.
At Knightsbridge they exited the station, walking in silence for a while, finally free of the paparazzi.
Huge white and red brick town houses loomed over them and every few minutes a ridiculous sports car would zoom past, barely able to break the speed limit through the tightly packed roads.
Kai could see what Isobel had meant by snobby rich people. Although if he had access to his inheritance he might find it difficult to refrain from buying a ridiculously fast sports car, but at least he would only drive it somewhere where it could fulfill its full potential. A track, perhaps.
"Are you hungry? We should get food." Kai frowned. He wasn't hungry, but he followed her all the same into a huge shop which, surprisingly, he recognised.
Harrods.
Kai's grandfather had an account here.
"You want to get food in Harrods?" he asked in disbelief, "do they even sell food here?"
"Ooh! You know Harrods?" Isobel asked, delighted. "And of course they sell food, there's an entire food hall! Don't tell Tyson."
And so there was. Counters upon counters of food, every type of food one could imagine filled the walls and counters. Sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, pasta, curries, icecream, pastries, there was even some somewhat authentic looking sushi.
"What do you want? I'll pay!" she insisted.
"You choose," huffed Kai, who, aside from feeling the shame of not having any money felt very out of place. If he had really thought about it he probably could have added it to his grandfathers account, but he didn't want to spend his money.
They left with two bags filled with food. Isobel looked thrilled.
They walked for a while, again in silence, eventually turning down a quiet street with a small park in the center.
"Lets sit," she said, taking a seat on a park bench. Kai hesitated and then sat down at the opposite end.
She began to take all of the food out of the bags and placed it between them.
There were two coffees, two bottles of fancy water, a box of shredded rotisserie chicken in gravy with greens and potatoes, a wrap that looked like some kind of pulled pork that had been chopped into four rolls and two very decadent strawberry cakes.
Kai could not help but think that this felt very much as if it were becoming a date.
How had it come to this? He would have to play on what Tyson fondly called, 'Sourpuss Mode' to try and deter this entire situation from becoming even more date-like.
Finally, Isobel pulled a very expensive looking jar of mustard out of the bag.
"Oh, thats for Max!" she said, placing it into her bag. "I thought he'd like it!"
Kai exhaled in an irked sort of way. "I thought you were supposed to be doing something dangerous," he said, making sure that irritation rang through every syllable.
Isobel smiled and poked at the chicken with a wooden fork. "Oh I am, I just thought we should eat first."
"We? I thought it was none of my business."
"Well, we were running from the paparazzi and I kind of inadvertently brought you along with me." She said this as if the past hour or so had not happened via the means of conscious decision.
Kai raised an eyebrow and finally picked up some food.
"You could have just left me to fend for myself against the mob. It would have been the perfect way to get rid of me" And then I wouldn't be stuck here with you, he thought, annoyed.
"Oh I couldn't do that, you looked so scared!"
A flicker of anger flared in his chest. "Scared?" he almost choked on his pulled pork wrap, which was annoyingly very nice, much better than the food at the hotel.
"You were like a deer in the headlights!"
Whatever Kai may have thought earlier during LaserTag about Isobel potentially being a good tag team partner, he had now changed his mind. Yes, those earlier feelings were wrong, and now he was sure that he did in fact hate her.
From that moment on they ate the rest of their food in silence. The cake was exquisite, Kai was sure Tyson would murder for it and made a mental note never, ever to introduce him to the delights of the Harrods food hall.
"I'm just waiting for that couple over there to leave." Isobel whispered after coming back from putting their empty takeaway boxes in the bin.
"Right. And then we're doing what exactly?" He glared around at the neatly kept park. It didn't look like the sort of place that would have dangerous happenings going on.
"We're going in there," she nodded in the direction of a sad-looking hexagonal building that looked as if it dated back to the Victorian times. Kai had assumed it was merely a shed for the park grounds keeper.
"How exactly do you plan on getting in there?" The door was behind a locked gate. "What even is it?"
"I have a key," she said, pulling one from her pocket and waving it slightly, more delight on her face. Kai wondered if she had stolen it.
"Most people think its a ventilation shaft for a disused tube tunnel below, but its not. I mean, there is a disused tunnel below, but not the one they think it is, and its not a train line."
Whilst interesting, this brought up more questions. "Why are we going down a shaft to a disused tunnel?"
Isobel did not seem to think that this required a response. Kai was however certainly beginning to get a better understanding of what Tim had meant by 'dangerous'. Not that it sound like anything he hadn't faced before.
They watched as the couple packed up their early dinner and left.
"Lets go," Isobel whispered.
They reached the gate which, once unlocked, creaked open and they stepped inside. Isobel then wound her hands through the bars again and locked it from the outside.
"What?" she said at the look on Kai's face. "I don't want anyone following us inside!"
She inserted another key into the door and then jammed her shoulder against it to shove it open. It seemed the door had not been open in some time.
Inside it was pitch black. "I only brought one torch, sorry," she said, pulling it from her bag. Kai felt that telling her that they could probably have bought best torch in the world back in Harrods perhaps would not be appreciated.
He tried to look around the building but Isobel shone the light away and down towards a set of rusty stairs that spiraled into darkness.
"Those look safe." He observed sardonically.
She grinned in a nervous way, although he couldn't quite make it out in the darkness. "They're just stairs, but if you don't want to I could let you back out. You could keep watch for me-"
Kai let out an exasperated noise. "I'm coming with you whether you like it or not!" He couldn't let her go alone, and besides, this looked exactly like the sort of adventure Kai craved.
Isobel looked away with a smile. "Alright!" She sounded rather pleased for a girl who kept reminding him that this was none of his business.
"I'll go first," she said, reaching for the handrail.
"Wait!" He grabbed her by the arm and she turned to stare directly at him, sparkling eyes glistening in the torchlight. He let go immediately.
"Is there anything I should know before we do this? Is there anything dangerous? Are we looking for something?" he demanded.
Isobel frowned in the dim torchlight, weighing up her options. Hell, she didn't have to tell him everything. He was OK with a little mystery and he was about to say so when she uttered, "I'm looking for a BitBeast."
It was not what Kai had expected her to say. He really should have known though. Since when had he ever been on an adventure that hadn't been at least somewhat BitBeast related?
"Well, part of one at least," she murmured. "Or, well.. Two."
Kai raised his eyebrow again.
"Fine!" she said, a little affronted. "I'm looking for two BitBeasts. Happy?"
Kai said nothing but was now even more intrigued. Why did she need two BitBeasts? "You have a BitBeast already though."
Again, Isobel did not seem to think that this required a response and instead rolled her eyes and made to grip the handrail, stepping onto the stairs which creaked horribly.
Kai had the sense to wait until she had got to the bottom before following. He wasn't sure the stairs could hold both of their weight. He had been right to think this. Just as he got halfway down there was a horrible noise of tearing steel, followed by Isobel's shout as she shone the torch up at him just in time for him to watch the stairs fall from beneath. Kai flung himself away and mercifully, the stairs landed many feet from where he crashed onto the floor.
A searing pain spread through his shoulder. It was a small mercy that the ground was made of soft, damp earth.
"Are you hurt?" Isobel threw herself onto the floor and began trying to examine him.
"M'fine! Get off!" Kai scrambled to his to his feet and stretched his shoulder out. It did hurt, rather a lot. "Nothing's broken!" He spat, unable to contain the slither of anger that escaped. From what he could see of her face she looked anxious. "You know this really should have been included in the list of things I ought to know and is there anything dangerous?"
"I-I didn't know the stairs would give way!" Isobel shone the torch up at them. The remaining stairs were quite out of reach. Getting back out would certainly be a challenge.
"I don't suppose you've got a rope?" he added dryly.
She looked mortified.
"Of course you don't." He sighed, trying to hide a nervous undertone. "Well, that's a problem for future us."
They set off down the damp earth tunnel. Occasionally they would come across rocky areas that had been chiseled out or wooden slats holding up the ceiling of the tunnel. Water kept dripping on Kai's head as they sloped downwards. He hoped there wasn't gas down here.
Isobel seemed unconcerned, although she had been unconcerned about the stairs so that did not fill Kai with much reassurance. It was difficult however for Kai to worry too much when he was starting to feel a sense of adventure that had not been satisfied in a surprisingly long time.
They reached a particularly large boulder at which Isobel stopped and turned to him.
"Its behind here," she said quietly.
Kai refrained from asking 'whats behind here?' and instead settled on, "you really thought you'd be able to move this thing on your own?"
Isobel glared at him and indicated that he should start pushing.
With great effort, they together heaved the boulder over slightly so they could both slip through a stone entrance that it had been covering.
"Wait!" Kai threw his arm out to stop Isobel from going any further. The floor where she was about to step was nowhere in sight. They stared at each other and both of their eyes widened in horror as they heard the unmistakable sound of the boulder sliding back into place behind them.
They were trapped on a ledge with no way of getting down.
"Its OK, it'll be OK!" said Isobel, weakly.
Kai was quite sure that it was not OK, but worrying about it would not help matters.
Torches flared into the life and Kai's eyes were immediately drawn down to the huge open chasm where the floor should have been. Then with a jolt like an earthquake the entire room began to shake. Dust crumbled from the ceiling and Kai grabbed Isobel and pushed her against the boulder, trying to shield her from whatever might fall from above.
"What are you doing?" she demanded, trying to peer past him.
"Do you want to get crushed?" Kai shouted over the sound of groaning stones and rocks, trying to cover his own head too, he'd be quite useless with a head injury.
"They're not falling!" Isobel wriggled free of him and pointed. "Look, they're coming up from the floor!"
"They're- what?" Kai spun around, she was right of course. Many large square stones were making their way steadily towards them like platforms. They watched their progress until finally, the last stone slid up to the entrance and stopped directly in front of them.
"Do you think they'll all start moving as soon as we step onto it?"
"Undoubtedly," Kai replied breathlessly. "We probably shouldn't get separated." He could not help feeling that there had already been way too much hand holding today, but needs must. He held his out and she took it without question.
They stepped onto the first stone. For a split second, nothing happened.
Then, the stone rocketed upwards.
Isobel jumped a mile and immediately entwined her fingers in Kai's, for which she received an indignant look.
"What?" she demanded. "Its easier to keep hold this way-"
"Oh just jump!" shouted Kai impatiently, dragging Isobel towards the edge of the stone and leaping down onto the nearest one. They landed awkwardly and had no time to recover as it immediately began to rocket downwards.
"Grab that one and pull yourself up!" Kai shouted as they descended towards the next stone. He pulled his hand free of hers and grabbed onto the edge as they plummeted. He managed to get a good grip and pull himself up but Isobel had not managed it in time. In a panic, Kai flung himself over the side and grabbed her hand. He should not have let go!
"Oh god!" Isobel gasped as the stone went out from under her and she dangled there, the only thing keeping her from falling being Kai's awkward grip.
"Its OK!" he shouted, trying not to sound panicked. "Try and give me your other hand!"
She scrambled at the rock face and Kai tried to reach whilst also keeping most of his body firmly on the stone so that he too would not go toppling over the edge.
Finally, after a lot of sweaty finger touching where neither of them could get a good grip on the other he managed to seize her other hand and pull her up, directly on top of him.
Their eyes met, they were almost nose to nose.
"S-sorry, sorry!" Isobel apologised over and over, rolling off of him.
Mercifully the stone that they had climbed onto felt quite stationary.
Kai was breathing heavily, completely flustered.
Now he knew exactly what Tim had meant by 'dangerous'.
"Did you really think you'd be able to do this on your own?" he gasped. "Even I don't think I'd be able to do this on my own!" and that was saying something.
"You seem to be doing fine to me," she said quietly.
He gave her an irritated look.
He couldn't believe he had let this girl drag him along on some strange adventure that may very well result in both of their deaths. How many more obstacles might there be after they found their way out of this one? It was like being back on Gideons Island.
He gazed over at Isobel's quivering figure. He knew he should feel sympathy, but he did not.
"I can't believe you made me go to LaserTag, and now this!" He snapped. Really, he couldn't figure out if he was angry or if he were having the time of his life. Maybe it was both.
"I-I didn't make you go to LaserTag!" she said shakily.
He barked out out a laugh, which sounded weird because Kai never laughed. "You lured me there!"
"Oh I'm so sorry I lured you to LaserTag!" said Isobel, sounding not sorry at all. "I didn't realise I took away your free will! You know you could have said no! But nooo, I must have bewitched you with my desire for revenge and fun!" She crossed her arms and hugged herself.
"Hnn!" She was impossible. Although, Kai did have to admit that he was fond of both revenge and fun, or at least his version of fun, which just so happened to be revenge, but he wasn't about to tell Isobel that.
"Look- theres an exit over there," she pointed across the cavern to another stone circular opening. "We should probably carry on or we'll be stuck here forever." She got to her feet without looking at him.
They managed their way across the next few stones without too much hassle. The only upset was on the last stone when Kai's scarf managed to get wedged between two stones moving in different directions. Isobel yanked it free before Kai managed to accidentally hang himself and finally, they leapt through the exit.
They landed in a long, narrow corridor, lit only by the torch lights back in the room of moving platforms. The corridor had nothing but six blocks bearing different symbols. Isobel approached one and pushed it.
"Don't just-" Kai began, but it was too late, the stone gently slid backwards and there was another low groan of moving rock. Much to his surprise, a streak of green light appeared at the end of a tunnel. A door.
"Oh," said Kai, walking up to the next block and pressing that too, but instead of opening the door further it slid shut again.
They looked at each other, confused.
"Maybe they have to be pressed in a certain order?" Isobel asked.
"That's a quite a few different combinations we'd have to try," said Kai, looking around the corridor. "Wait- what if you hold that one in and I hold this one?"
They both pressed on the blocks in front of them. The door groaned again and slid open a little further than the first time.
"Oh! We have to hold them all in place at the same time?" Isobel reached across the corridor and pressed on the only other block that she could reach, the one that Kai was currently holding in. "You try the next two!"
Kai let go, ducked under her arm and pressed on the next two blocks. The door opened even more, surely enough for both of them to get through.
"Do you reckon we'd make it if we ran for it?" Isobel asked as green light permeated the room, now accompanied by a strange mist.
"I don't know. We should probably try and get to them all. Wait-" he was being stupid.
Kai pulled his blade and launcher from his pocket.
"Oh!" Isobel followed suit.
"I hope your aim is as good as mine," said Kai with a smirk.
"Its a shame your arrogance suits you," she retorted as she attached her beyblade to her launcher.
Had that been a compliment? No time to think about it now.
"Shoot, press, run! Go!" he called.
They launched their beyblade's simultaneously and they shot towards the two blocks at the end of the corridor. Immediately Kai and Isobel pressed their blocks and then they were off, streaking down the corridor towards the door.
The beyblade's hit their target and the door opened wide. Kai could see nothing but green light.
They were speeding towards the door. Would they make it? He wasn't sure. "Come on!" he called, giving Isobel a slight push, but it was difficult to run side by side in such a narrow corridor.
"Dranzer!" He called and both beyblades fell away from the blocks. In the split second it took for both Kai and Isobel to pluck them from the air the door began to close.
"We're not going to ma-"
"Yes we will!" Kai gave her another sharp shove, and they both, after tripping over eachothers feet, fell through the door and into the eerie green mist.
