"Man, oh man!" Biomedical scientist, Leon Phoenix, said with a shake of his head, "Our second battle of our first season, and we get an absolute bloodbath! These are two of the most brutal alien races out there. On the one hand, we have the Elite Predators. Their whole lives revolve around hunting and warfare, traveling across the galaxies to find opponents they deem worthy enough to call prey. On the other hand, we have the Sangheili Elites. These guys were the backbone of the Covenant, and were some of the best swordsmen out their; earning both respect and fear from allies and enemies alike. Both these guys had a strong sense of honor, but they were also as brutal as they come."
"Not just brutal, but enormous as well!" said ER Physician, Dr. Rebecca Smith. "Both these guys tower over normal humans. There's also not that much of a size difference between the two either; the Sangheili are only six inches taller and sixty-three pounds heavier than the Predators."
"I have no idea who's walking away alive." Commented computer expert, Jackson Miles. "All I know is that this is going to be one heck of a bloodbath."
A predator activates a strange gun-like weapon on his wrist and takes aim.
The Elder Predator known as Ahab has agreed to represent his species. Ahab is the Elder who single handedly took on and defeated one of the most dangerous and formidable opponents ever hunted by a Yautja - An Engineer.
A man with short dark hair and wearing combat fatigues picks up a polearm like weapon and examines it.
Also representing the Elder Predators is Royce. Royce is a US Army soldier turned mercenary who was kidnapped and brought to a hunting preserve. Though he has yet to face an Elder in combat, he knows just how deadly your average garden variety Predator can be.
"Predators are not called the deadliest hunters in the galaxy for no reason." Royce explained. "Their entire life and culture revolves around killing, meaning that they have to be tough and relentless. Quitting is simply not an option."
Native to the jungles of Yautja Prime, the Predator's culture revolved around searching the galaxy to find the most dangerous opponents for sport hunting and as a rite of passage. It was their lust for combat that led them to Earth over the millennia.
"Predators are not just simple minded animals whose weapons are solely designed for hunting." Royce said. "These are intelligent, brutal and effective killers!"
The Predators were feared throughout the galaxy, with the best of the best being the Elder Predators. They targeted whatever they thought would make the best prey; ranging from their mortal foes the xenomorphs to Colonial Marines on different human settlements across the solar system.
"Predators don't discriminate against what they hunt." Royce stated, "As long as they see you as worthy prey, and he follows certain rules of the hunt, he doesn't care what you are; even in militaristic combat. He's going to see the Sangheili and just see another trophy."
The Elder Predators would travel all over the galaxy to find the perfect opponent to call prey, using an entire arsenal worth of high-tech weaponry. These included…
Long Range – Plasma Caster
Medium Range – Energy Flechette
Close Range – Predator Glaive
Explosive – Throwing Mines
But today, the Elder Predators have their sights on an opponent that is just as honorable and just as deadly as they are: The Sangheili Elites.
A brown Elite wearing silver combat armor presses a button on a strange handheld device, activating two plasma blades.
Fighting for the Sangheili Elites, Thel 'Vadam. Thel was the Arbiter during The Human-Covenant war, and continues to carry this title.
"The Sangheili were and still are proud and fierce fighters." Thel commented, "Our fighting skill is considered second to none."
Natives of the tropical wetlands of Sangheilios, the Sangheili were raised to be soldiers from childhood. Their culture was built around militaristic endeavors; to the point that doctors were considered dishonorable because they "spill blood" off the battlefield. And even then, most Sangheili would rather die in battle than heal themselves.
"Despite our intelligence, Sangheili relished in warfare." Thel said, "That was why they were quick to join the Covenant; they would handle the fighting and the Prophets would handle the science and technology."
The Sangheili Elites would be the backbone of the Covenant's army for decades, until they sided with humanity after the Prophets betrayed them; planning on wiping out the entire Sangheili race after the Prophet of Regrets assassination. Now on the opposite side, the Covenant learned just why humanity referred to them as "Elites".
"A Sangheili was trained in all forms of ranged combat." Thel said, "However, we had a strong sense of honor. It's not unheard of to see a Sangheili show respect and admiration to opponents that can give us a good fight. And as the Predators will discover, we can kill them with respect, too."
The Sangheili were skilled combatants, but they relied on weapons supplied to them by the Covenant. These weapons include…
Long Range – Type-25 Plasma Rifle
Medium Range – Type-25 Plasma Pistol
Close Range – Type-1 Energy Sword
Explosive – Type-1 Plasma Grenade
We start things off with the two warrior's close range weapons. The Predators strike first with a devastating pole arm, the glaive.
Predator Glaive
Length: 8.5 ft.
Weight: 22 lbs.
Material: Alien Steel
"This is the glaive." Royce said, gesturing to a small pole in Ahab's hand. "It may look pathetic now, but press the little button on the side," Ahab does so, causing the pole to grow longer, "and pow! Instant polearm. This was a melee weapon that predators used when they wanted to keep their prey in close but at a distance. As you can see, there are blades on both sides; which combined with the Predator's strength, meant it could slice through a human like butter."
"Yikes…" Jackson commented.
"Well, let's see how well it will do against a Sangheili." Leon said, gesturing to five targets in front of him. "Okay, we've set up these gel torsos for Ahab to test on. Four of the targets are normal gel torsos, just made to look like Sangheili soldiers. The final target is wearing a Sangheili Storm Harness. Think you can manage, Ahab?"
Ahab merely nodded as he extended the glaive and got into a fighting stance.
"Okay, on my mark!" Leon shouted, "Three…two…one! Hack it up!"
Ahab charged forward and impaled the first target with a thrust through the chest cavity, before ripping it out. Turning towards the second target, Ahab spun around and tore the torso clean in two. For target number three, Ahab thrust the glaive through the gel torso's throat, nearly removing the head as he removed it. Target number four got off easy as Ahab merely slashed through the head, removing the top half.
Now it was target number five's turn. Ahab spun around again and struck the armor. However, he only succeeded in scratching it. Undeterred, Ahab spun around one last time and slashed through the exposed neck, removing the head entirely.
"Sweet Jiminy Christmas…" Jackson said, starting to look a little pale.
"Okay," Rebecca began slowly, "let's see what we have. Target number one was struck through the chest, but if that wasn't enough, the serrated blades are going to be bringing parts out with him. Target two is one the floor, and target three is gushing out gallons right now! For target number four, you sliced right through the skull, taking half of the brain with it!"
She then walked over to the final target saying, "For target five, I like how you realized that you weren't able to get through the armor, so you went for the exposed part of the neck. That's five for five!"
"It is an impressive weapon," Thel admitted, "but the Sangheili armor is more than just the metal coat. We also give off an energy shield. I'd like to see it go through that. It will not be an easy feat, however; so far the only physical attack that can get through is the punch from a SPARTAN-II."
To test the energy shield against the glaive, another test is set up. This time, Ahab will go up against one armored target complete with an energy shield.
"Okay, Ahab are you ready?" Leon called out.
Ahab nodded as he made a clicking noise, activating his glaive again. He gave a look at the energy shield that was surrounding the target in front of him.
"Three…two…one! Hack it up!"
Ahab swung with as much strength as he could muster. Much to everyone's shock, the blade made its way through and slashed through the target's throat.
"Wow…" Jackson said, "It actually did it."
"It may not be as bad as the ones without the shield, but it still managed to slash the throat." Rebecca explained. "It's a kill."
The Arbiter is impressed, but not enough. He believes that the Sangheili have the perfect weapon to counter the Predator's glaive. They strike back with their most famous weapon: the Type-1 energy sword.
Type-1 Energy Sword
Length: 4 ft.
Weight: 5.2 lbs.
Material: Shaped Plasma
"This," Thel explained, holding up a w-shaped handle, "is the Type-1 Energy Sword. It is the Sangheili's most honored weapon. With just a press of this button," Thel pressed the button on the side, activating two condensed white plasma blades, "two heated, four foot plasma blades extending forward to form a sword."
"Impressive. Let's see how it holds up." Leon said, pointing to five targets in front of him. "We've set up the same test; five targets, four unarmored, one armored. This time, the armored target is wearing Yautja armor. Think you can manage?"
"I know I can." Thel stated, getting into a fighting stance.
"Okay then, on my mark! Three…two…one! Hack it up!"
Thel charged forward and punched the first target, impaling it with the plasma blades. He pulled them out, then turned his attention to the second target, doing the exact same thing. Target number three received a punch to the face, running a plasma blade through it; nearly removing the head as he took the blade out. Target number four received a punch to the stomach before Thel made a diagonal slashing moment across the chest, the top half falling right of the target.
Now it was the fifth target's turn. Charging forward, Thel pulled back and jabbed forward, puncturing the armor. After pulling it out, Thel deactivated the blade.
"Dang…" Jackson said.
"Okay, let's see what we got." Rebecca said, "The first target got it through the chest, one blade going where the heart is. The same with target two. Target three, you almost took his head clean off. For target four, you went through the stomach, he's bleeding out and will die very soon. But then you followed that up by pretty much slicing him in half, so he's dead. And target five's armor was punctured as well as the target itself. Five confirmed kills. Not bad."
"I noticed that you had to get in extremely close to deliver those kills." Leon said, "Why is that?"
"Unfortunately, the most glaring downside of the weapon is that it is strictly a close-quarters weapon.," Thel explained, "Any combat engaged outside the effective ranch leaves the wielding vulnerable to long range attack."
"It's a good weapon, sure." Royce said, "It's definitely one a Predator would consider a worthy trophy, but our weapon is twice as long, giving us a better reach."
"My sword made it through your armor." Thel pointed out, "Your glaive didn't make it through mine."
"But we made it through your shield." Royce countered. "And even if we didn't, Predators have weapons that can disable shielding technology."
The Predator Glaive? Or The Type-1 Energy Sword? Who gets the edge? Our experts are divided…
"The glaive was definitely a brutal weapon," Rebecca began, "but the energy sword was the more practical weapon and even more brutal. Plus, the Sangheili Elites are known for their swordsmanship. I have to give it to the energy sword."
"I respectfully disagree, Doc." Jackson said. "The sword is way too short. A Predator is not just going to stand there and let itself get punched or slashed. The glaive, on the other hand, is far more versatile and it actually got through the energy shield. Edge, Predator Glaive."
At a standstill, it's up to Leon to make the decision.
"Both these weapons truly impressed me!" Leon said, "The glaive had more versatility and length, and it made it through the energy shield; something that I didn't think was possible. That being said, it wasn't able to make it through the Sangheili armor. The sword may be shorter, but it did manage to get through the Predator's armor. Again, I was impressed by both, but I have to give it to the energy sword."
It's close, but in close ranged weapons, the Sangheili Elites take an early edge with the Type-1 Energy Sword.
Edge: Sangheili Elites
Coming up, two powerful plasma cannons face off when the warrior's long range weapons are tested.
Now comes the time to test the two warrior's long range weapons. The Sangheili Elites are up first with the Type-25 Plasma Rifle.
Type-25 Plasma Rifle
Length: 2 ft.
Weight: 13 lbs.
Range: 160 ft.
Rounds: 400 shots
"This is the Type-25 Plasma Rifle." Thel explained. "It's lightweight, automatic, and can fire superheated plasma blasts up to fifty meters."
But the Predators believe they have a firearm far more powerful than their opponents. They counter the plasma rifle with the plasma caster.
Plasma Caster
Length: 1 ft.
Weight: 3 lbs.
Range: Varies
Rounds: Infinite
"This is the Predator's Plasma Caster." Royce said, gesturing to Ahab who activated a strange cannon-like weapon that was mounted on his shoulder. "It's lightweight, fires instantaneously, and can fire plasma bolts that can incinerate the target in one shot up to one hundred feet at least. Predators fire it with their mask, it has a targeting system to make it more accurate, and to top it off: it has infinite ammunition!"
"You both make good cases, but let's see how good they are against one another." Leon said, gesturing to five targets. "What we've got here are five targets acting as Predator stand-ins. Each target is dressed in the armor of the Predators. Each target is at a completely different range: first one at fifty feet, second at one hundred feet, third at one hundred twenty-five, and so on. Your job, take out all five."
"Gladly." Thel said, lifting his rifle up and taking aim.
"Thel, are you ready?!" Leon called out.
"Affirmative!" Thel called back.
"On three…two…one…fire!"
Thel took aim at the first target and fired a blast of plasma. The blast made contact with the Predator's armor, causing a rather large hole to be made before knocking the target over. Turning his attention to the second target, Thel fired a couple more blasts; one blasting the head clean off and the other striking the chest plate.
Taking aim at the third target, Thel unleashed a volley of plasma blasts. Surprisingly, it missed. Undeterred, Thel took a step forward and unleashed another plasma blast; this time the blast just managed to hit the target, blasting a hole in the stomach. Thel fired at the fourth target, but only managed to knock it over.
With a grunt, Thel took aim at the final target and fired. However, just as it was about to make contact with the target, the plasma blast dissipated into thin air.
"Well, that was…" Jackson said, before adding, "…anticlimactic?"
"Let's take a look." Rebecca said. "Target number one is dead, the blast went right through the armor. Target two is also dead, assuming the missing head didn't give that fact away. Target three has a hole in his abdomen, so he's dead too."
She then walked up to the last two targets. "However, as soon as you got to the targets that were farther away, it seemed like the weapon just…didn't want to work."
"Admittedly, there are some drawbacks to the plasma rifle." Thel said begrudgingly, "The weapon can be used at long range, but it sacrifices accuracy for rate of fire. Not to mention that the weapon is prone to misfire if it is overused."
"I also noticed that the last shot just vanished." Leon said, "What happened there?"
"That's another drawback: speed." Thel admitted, "The faster the bolt goes, the farther the bolt travels before it starts to weaken."
"You call that a drawback, I call that a dead Sangheili." Royce said. "Our weapon doesn't have those types of problems, and it will take out your guys before they can even raise their rifles."
"You talk the talk, but let's see you put your money where your mouth is." Leon said, gesturing to five targets behind him. "We've set up the same test here, with the same rules. The only difference is that they're wearing Sangheili armor and the fifth target has an energy shield. Think you can handle that, Ahab?"
Ahab merely nodded as he activated his plasma caster.
"Ahab, you ready?!" Leon called out.
Ahab let out a series of clicking noises and nodded in response.
"Three…two…one…fire!"
Ahab fired a plasma blast at the first target, blowing the head clean off, before doing the same thing to the second target. Taking aim at the third target, Ahab fired a blast at the chest and knocked the target over. The fourth target received a blast to the arm, severing it from the torso, before Ahab fired another blast at the target's neck; obliterating it and the head.
Now it was the fifth target's turn. Ahab shot a plasma blast at the shield, only for the blast to be deflected. Undeterred, Ahab shot another plasma blast. Again, the blast was deflected, though the shielding seemed to look a little weaker. Ahab fired a third time, and the blast was deflected again; however, the shielding had dissipated entirely. Charging up the plasma blast, Ahab fired one last time and struck the target in the chest, knocking it over.
"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Jackson commented.
"Let's take a look shall we?" Rebecca asked, walking over to the targets. "Targets one and two have no heads anymore, so they're dead."
"Target three has a massive hole in the armor and the chest cavity." She said as she lifted the third target up, revealing the very hole. "This guy's dead." She then turned her attention to the fourth target and said, "Target number four is not only screaming in agony at his missing arm, he's also just lost a massive chunk of his upper half!"
"Overkill, much?" Leon quipped.
"To a Predator?" Royce asked, "There's no such thing."
"And target five is pretty much target three all over again." Rebecca finished, pointing out the massive hole in both the flesh and armor.
"That's five out of five kills for the plasma caster," Leon stated, "versus three out of five for the plasma rifle."
"That's because, unlike the plasma rifle, our weapon is actually a long range firearm and not a close ranged one in disguise." Royce quipped.
"Perhaps," Thel admitted, "but your weapon had to fire four times before it depleted our energy shield. That gives a Sangheili enough time to fire a blast from their rifle and take you down."
"If you can hit us, that is." Royce said, rolling his eyes.
The Sangheili's Plasma Rifle? Or the Predator's Plasma Caster? Which weapon gives their warrior the edge in long range weapons?
"For me, I have to give this to the plasma rifle." Rebecca said. "True, the plasma caster has a better range and more shots, but that energy shield is going to be a problem. After the Predator fires the first shot, he's going to leave himself wide open for the Elite to blast him!"
"I have to disagree, Doc." Jackson said. "The plasma rifle is too much of a close to mid-range weapon to really be a threat from a distance. Throw in the fact that you have a gun that has infinite shots versus a gun with limited ammo, and the fact that the one with infinite shots is a real ranged weapon, and it's clear which one deserves the edge. Edge, plasma caster."
"You took the words right out of my mouth, Jack." Leon said with a nod. "Edge, plasma caster."
In long range weapons, the edge goes to the Elite Predators for their Plasma Caster.
Edge: Elder Predators
Coming up, things get intense when both warriors have their explosive weapons analyzed.
Now is the time to test both warrior's explosive weapons. The Elder Predators kick things off with an entire selection of different explosives: the throwing mines!
Throwing Mines
Weight: Variable
Blast Radius: Variable
Casting: Alien Steel
Types: Incendiary, EMP, Sonic, Plasma
Can either be placed or thrown
"These are just one of the Predator's main choices for explosives; the throwing mines." Royce explained as Ahab held up a medium sized, triangular disc. "They can either be placed or thrown. When thrown, they detonate on contact with the target. And when placed, they can be detonated by either the Predator's wrist computer or by an enemy passing by. They come in four different varieties: fire, sonic, plasma, and EMP."
"Well, it sounds like it would be really effective, but let's test them out." Leon said.
To test each one of the throwing mines, Ahab will be given four separate targets; all four wearing Sangheili armor, but one with an active energy shield.
"Okay, Ahab." Leon explained, "We set up a test here. Three of these targets don't have the energy shield activated, so you're free to use whichever mine you want on them. The fourth, however, has an energy shield activated; that is for the EMP mine. Think you can take them out?"
Ahab merely nodded.
"Okay, Ahab, you ready?!" Leon called out.
Ahab nodded again as he picked up a throwing mine.
"On my mark! Three…two…one…fire!" Leon shouted.
Ahab tossed the first mine at the target with the energy shield. When the disc made contact, a series of sparks were made as the shielding started to dissipate, before disappearing all together. Ahab took the second mine and tossed it at the second target. When it made contact, the target was engulfed by a bright light that was accompanied by a loud bang.
Picking up the third mine, Ahab tossed it at the third target. Upon impact, the mine ignited and engulfed the target in a blazing inferno; scorching the flesh and the armor. After a few minutes, all that remained was a pile of ash. The Elite hunter then picked up the last mine and threw it towards the final target. Upon making contact with the target, it became enveloped in a large burst of plasma. In a matter of mere seconds, the target was disintegrated.
"Oh, man…" Jackson said, "If I had known what things I'd be seeing today…"
"Okay. The first was just to see if it could bypass the armor – and it did. And the second one is basically a flash bang; he's going to be disoriented but still be alive, just not for long." Rebecca said, "With that said, the other two have practically nothing left to analyze; they're gone!"
Our experts are impressed with the throwing mines. And so is Thel 'Vadam; but he believes that the Sangheili Elites have quite the devastating explosive of their own, one that will prove quality over quantity: the Type-1 Plasma Grenade.
Type-1 Plasma Grenade
Size: 5.7 inches in diameter
Weight: 2 lbs.
Filling: 9.3 oz. Latent Plasma
Blast Radius: 42 ft.
"This is the Type-1 Antipersonal Grenade, better known to humans as the Plasma Grenade." Thel explained, holding up a small blue orb. "It may be small, but it has a blast radius of forty-two feet; with those in thirteen feet being annihilated. It also has the ability to stick to its target until the fuse is up."
"How long does the fuse last?" Leon asked.
"Three seconds." Thel confirmed.
"Three seconds?" Royce asked. "Your opponent is going to have more than enough time to take you out before that thing takes him out! And that's assuming that it even sticks to him."
"Well, we'll just have to see about that." Leon said. He then turned his attention to Thel and pointed towards five targets in Yautja armor. "Okay, Thel. We set up a test for you. There are five targets in Yautja armor at different ranges. First target is at thirteen feet, second is at twenty-six feet, third is at thirty-nine feet, and the fifth target is at fifty-two feet. Each has a shock patch attached to them, with both 30G and 100G. If the 100G patch is tripped, he's dead; but if the 30G patch is tripped, he's disoriented. Think you can handle it?"
"Absolutely." Thel said with a nod.
"Okay, Thel, are you ready?!"
"Yes!" Thel responded, grabbing one of the plasma grenades.
"On three…two…one…fire!"
Thel activates the switch on the grenade and tosses it at the first target. The adhesive properties clung to the target's biomask, and within three seconds, the grenade exploded in a flash of white-blue light. The first target was decimated, the second and third were caught on fire, and the fourth and fifth were thrown back.
"Wow…" Jackson commented.
"Well, the first three are dead, no questions there." Rebecca said, heading over to the fourth and fifth targets. "So let's take a look at the last two. Target number four was almost out of the kill range, but he still got caught in the blast range."
"I'm seeing 100G, Doc." Leon pointed out as he examined the fourth target. "This guy's dead."
"Now, target number five was out of the blast radius," Rebecca explained, "but I'm not seeing either the 30G or 100G patch tripped. This guy is still alive. Dazed and disorientated, but still alive"
"Like I said earlier," Royce said, "If it sticks to the target. A Predator is not going to stand there and let a grenade hit him. Plus, you have three seconds to get out of range."
"Perhaps," Thel admitted, "but a Sangheili isn't going to stand around and get hit by your mines either."
The Predator's Throwing Mines? Or the Sangheili's Plasma Grenade? Which weapon gives their warrior the edge? Our experts are divided…
"I was definitely impressed with the throwing mines," Rebecca admitted, "until I saw the plasma grenade in action. It has a much more devastating outcome and once it attaches itself to the target, it's not getting off until it explodes. Edge, plasma grenade."
"The plasma grenade is a truly terrifying weapon." Jackson stated. "That said, I have to give it to the throwing mines. Not only can they be thrown, but they can also be placed and detonated remotely."
It's up to Leon to deliver the vote to break the tie…
"Both these weapons were truly terrifying and devastating in their own rights." Leon explained. "The plasma grenade had the much bigger payload, but with that three second fuse, he's either going to be left open for an attack against him, or the opponent will simply dodge it. The throwing mines, on the other hand, don't have that problem; they explode on contact when thrown, and when placed they can either be detonated by proximity or by remote, so there is no timed fuse. I was impressed by both these weapons, but in the end, I have to give my edge to the throwing mines."
It's close, but in explosive weapons, the edge goes to the Elder Predators for the Throwing Mines.
Edge: Elder Predators
Coming up, two backup hand cannons collide when the two warrior's medium range weapons are analyzed. Plus, Leon plans one more surprise test to analyze a certain similarity in the warrior's technologies.
The time has come to test the warrior's medium range weapons. The Elder Predators strike first with a backup firearm to the plasma caster: The Energy Flechette.
Energy Flechette
Length: 6 inches
Weight: 2 lbs.
Range: 100 ft.
Rounds: Infinite
"This is the Energy Flechette." Royce explained as Ahab activated a smaller firearm from his wrist gauntlet. "It's kept in the Predator's wrist gauntlet as a backup for the plasma caster. The same number of shots, the same power, but an admittedly shorter range. The only other thing that's different is that it's not as accurate."
But the Sangheili Elites also have a backup firearm of their own. They counter with the Type-25 Plasma Pistol.
Type-25 Plasma Pistol
Length: 15 inches
Weight: 8 lbs.
Range: 82 ft.
Rounds: 200 shots
"This is the Type-25 Plasma Pistol." Thel explained, "It's lightweight, has a range of eighty-two feet, and fires condensed bolts of plasma. It lacks the range of the plasma rifle, but in the right hands, it can be just as deadly."
"Well, let's test them out." Leon said, pointing to a group of targets wearing Sangheili armor. "Okay, Ahab, you're up first. We have five targets there, all of them in Sangheili armor. One target at twenty feet, one at forty feet, one at sixty, and so on. The target at one hundred feet has an energy shield. Think you can take them out?"
Ahab nodded, activating the Energy Flechette.
"On my mark! Three…two…one…Fire!" Leon called out.
Ahab stuck his arm out at the first target and fired. The plasma bolt contacted the chest of the first target, blowing a hole in it. Ahab aimed at the second target and blasted the head clean off. Ahab took aim at the third target, but when he fired, it just barely grazed the side. Taking aim again, Ahab fired another plasma blast; this time taking off the side of the face. Ahab took aim at the fourth target and fired another plasma blast. The blast took the arm clean off.
Finally, it was the fifth target's turn. Ahab aimed at the target and fired. The blast struck the shield and was deflected by it. Ahab fired again, but the blast missed and struck the ground. Undeterred, Ahab fired a third time, hitting the shield and weakening it. Ahab fired a fourth time, but the blast struck a nearby tree and took the branch clean off. Growling, Ahab fired a fifth time and struck the shield, finally dissipating it. Ahab took one more shot, and blasted the head right off.
"No wonder it's a backup weapon…" Jackson muttered.
"Targets one and two are dead, no need there." Rebecca said. "Target three was grazed, but with a blast from something that's over five thousand degrees Fahrenheit, he's going to have his flesh burnt to a crisp while screaming in agony; and that's before you finish him off with the blast to the face. Target four is just missing his arm, however due to the heat, it's cauterized; he's still alive. Target five is also dead."
"I noticed that the fifth target took a lot longer to take out than with the plasma caster." Leon said.
"Well, as I said before, it's not as accurate as the plasma caster." Royce explained, "It lacks the targeting abilities from the bio-mask."
"That will be a problem that our weapon won't have." Thel stated.
"Let's put that claim to the test, shall we?" Leon asked, gesturing to five targets dressed in Yautja armor. "We've set up the same test with the same goal. Only difference is the targets are now wearing Predator armor. Think you can top the Energy Flechette?"
"Absolutely." Thel said, grabbing the pistol and taking aim.
"Three…two…one…fire!"
Thel fired a blast at the first target, striking it in the chest. He aimed at the second target and fired a plasma bolt at the target's head. Taking aim at the third target, Thel fired another plasma bolt that blasted the neck; sending the head to the ground. He fired a fourth blast at the fourth target, hitting it square in the chest.
Now it was the fifth target's turn. Thel aimed his pistol and fired…only for the pistol not to fire at all.
"Ooh," Jackson muttered, "so close."
"Targets one and two are down, and three no longer has a head." Rebecca commented. "Target number four you hit square in the chest, vaporizing the lungs. He's dead too. Number five, however, is still alive."
"Yeah, what happened?" Leon asked.
"That, unfortunately, is a drawback to this weapon." Thel admitted, "If it's used too much, it will overheat; resulting in it temporarily shutting down in order to cool."
"Ah, so then you're a sitting duck." Royce quipped. "Our weapon doesn't have that problem!"
"I seem to recall that your weapon was all over the place due to lack of targeting." Thel countered, "And that it took longer to get past our shields than your plasma caster."
Which weapon earns the edge in medium range weapons? The Predator's Energy Flechette? Or the Sangheili Elite's Plasma Pistol?
"If I'm being perfectly honest here," Leon admitted, "I was not impressed with either weapon. The pistol is more accurate and goes through the Predator's armor, but it overheats if used too much. The Energy Flechette is a miniature plasma caster, with the same limitless power and ammo. However, the fact that it's not accurate, combined with the fact that it took longer to get through the shield, makes it just as flawed as the pistol is. Both these weapons are flawed, and while I can see them racking up big numbers in the simulation, I can't see them being big game changers. Edge, even."
In medium range weapons, both our warriors are dead even.
Edge: Even
Before we put our findings to the test, Leon has one more test. Both the Elite Predators and Sangheili Elites have a plethora of different technologies at their disposal, but there is one key technological feature they both share. One that both sides are more than likely to use in their duel to the death: Cloaking!
"Both the Predators and the Elites use cloaking technology to aid them in battle." Leon explained, standing in front of a table that had two sets of goggles and a rifle with a laser sight. "The Predators would use it to analyze and study their targets, so that they knew what they were up against. The Elites would use it to sneak up on their enemies and take them out before they knew what happened. So I propose a test to see which is better."
Leon pulled out two sets of goggles, one in each hand, as he explained. "The goggles in my left hand use the same vision as the Elites and SPARTANS Heads-up-Display. The goggles in my right hand use the same vision as the Predator's Bio-Mask. I'm going to stand in the clearing over there, and Ahab and Thel are going to sneak up on me; in their own cloaking. If I see either of you, I will use this laser sight to point you out."
First up is Thel with the Sangheili Elite Cloaking. To combat this, Leon will be wearing the goggles that simulate the Predator's Bio-Mask.
Thel activates his cloaking device and in a matter of seconds, he is surrounded by a blend of light. Thel then begins to quickly sneak up on Leon. A few seconds later, Leon hears the sound of footsteps approaching rather rapidly from behind him. Leon turns around and aims the rifle at Thel, activating the laser sight. Thel soon deactivated the cloaking device.
"Well, I saw you through the goggles, Thel." Leon said. "And even if I hadn't, the footsteps and your shadow gave away your location."
"Yeah, why were you running at him anyway?" Jackson asked.
"While it is an effective piece of technology that usually works," Thel admitted, "it does unfortunately have a time limit of twelve seconds before it deactivates."
"Twelve seconds?" Royce asked, slightly amused. "I'll grant you that it's longer than your grenade and it might catch a Predator from behind; but that's assuming that he doesn't hear you coming first!"
"And I suppose that your cloaking is superior?" Thel asked.
"I know it is." Royce confirmed.
To test Royce's claim, Leon dons the goggles with the same technology as the Elite's heads-up display.
Ahab activates his cloaking device, and within seconds is shrouded in a bend of light. Ahab then slowly sneaks up behind Leon.
Leon looks around and doesn't see anything. He looked to his left, his right, behind him, even back in front of him again; nothing. A few seconds later, Leon felt himself being pushed to the ground and his arm being forcefully brought behind his back. Grunting in pain, Leon looks up to see nothing…until Ahab deactivates his cloaking device. Ahab lets Leon go, as the latter gets back up and dusts himself off.
"Wow." Leon said, chuckling to himself. "I didn't even see you."
"And the best part is, a Predator can keep that up as long as he wants." Royce said, before admitting, "Well, as long as it doesn't come into contact with water; then it won't work."
"Ah, I see." Thel quipped, "So all we have to do is wait for a rainstorm or trick them into a puddle?"
"The fact is our cloaking wasn't detected by your heads-up display. Yours was detected by the Bio-Mask." Royce pointed out.
Both cloaking devices have their strengths and weaknesses, but which warrior's cloaking was better?
"Both these cloaking devices had their ups and downs." Leon explained. "However, for me the answer is clear. The Sangheili's cloaking was detected by the opponent's technology, and even if it wasn't, the device gives you only twelve seconds to sneak up on and attack your opponent. Throw in the fact that the user still leaves his shadow behind, and it's easy to see why I believe that the Predators have the better cloaking."
It's close, but in cloaking the Predators get the edge.
Edge: Elder Predators
Coming up, both brutal, honor-bound alien warriors go head-to-head in a duel to the death! Elder Predators…Sangheili Elites…Only one can be crowned…The Deadliest Fictional Warrior!
The time has come to put together the analysis collected from the weapons testing.
We tested four weapons that The Elder Predators would take on the hunt: The Plasma Caster, The Energy Flechette, The Predator Glaive, and The Throwing Mines. We also tested the Predator's cloaking abilities.
We also tested four weapons that the Sangheili Elites would bring to war: The Type-25 Plasma Rifle, the Type-25 Plasma Pistol, the Type-1 Energy Sword, and the Type-1 Plasma Grenade. The Elites cloaking was also analyzed.
In cloaking, the Predator's cloaking device turned out to be superior to their opponent's.
Edge: Elder Predators
In explosive weapons, the Predator's Throwing Mines blew away the Type-1 Plasma Grenade.
Edge: Elder Predators
In long range weapons, the Plasma Caster's infinite ammunition and longer range gave it the edge over the Sangheili's Plasma Rifle.
Edge: Elder Predators
In medium range weapons, neither the Energy Flechette nor the Plasma Pistol were able to outdo the other, resulting in neither weapon earning the edge.
Edge: Even
And in close range weapons, the Type-1 Energy Sword's armor piercing abilities, combined with an Elite's swordsmanship, slashed down the Predator's Glaive.
Edge: Sangheili Elites
With testing and analysis now complete, Jackson will input the data collected into a simulation to determine the winner. The battle will be a 6-on-6 squad match between six Elder Predators and six Sangheili Elites. To make sure that neither side wins with just a single lucky shot, the simulation will be run one thousand times. Who will win this duel to the death?
Hunters…
(An Elder Predator blasts a Xenomorph through the head with his plasma caster.)
Vs Soldiers
(A Sangheili Elite tosses a plasma grenade at a SPARTAN-III soldier, blowing him up.)
Lust for Battle…
(A group of Sangheili soldiers gun down a battalion of ODST soldiers.)
Vs Glory of the hunt
(An Elder Predator tears the skull and spine out of an Engineer, lifting it skyward with a roar.)
"We've analyzed all the weapons that both warriors bring to the table. All we need to do now is press the button, watch the show, and end this once and for all!" Jackson said, pressing the "Enter" button and starting the simulation.
On a lush jungle planet somewhere in the solar system, a three-toed foot steps into a puddle, causing a small splash. The foot's owner, a Sangheili Elite, looks over his shoulder to five other Elites armed with plasma rifles like the one that he was carrying. They were sent to this planet to eliminate a small cell of Jiralhanae who had set up base camp on the planet to plan an attack on Sangheilios, in the name of the late prophets.
Sangheili Elites: 6
A few moments later, the group discovered the Jiralhanae base camp. As they raised their weapons, however, they realized that it was empty. Equipment was strewn about and there were signs that a battle had recently taken place.
"Where did they go?" an Elite asked.
"It's a trick!" another growled. "Those apes are waiting to jump on us!"
"Jiralhanae are not known for intelligence. Even then, we would have picked them up on our scanners." the leader stated. Looking towards the ground, he noticed that there were Jiralhanae footprints embedded in the mud…along with a set of footprints he didn't recognize.
Little did he and his team know that what made these prints was still nearby…and were watching them right now.
Up in a tree, six Elder Predators were watching the Sangheili Elites below, analyzing and observing their new targets, while cloaked in a blend of light. The strange ape-like creatures they came across on their arrival to this planet did make worthy opponents – as was indicated by the ape-like skull attached to the leader's belt, but they didn't put up much of a fight. Perhaps these new creatures would be even more worthwhile?
Elder Predators: 6
The lead Predator turns to another and speaks to him in a series of clicks and growls. The other Predator nods as he turns and jumps down from the tree, still cloaked. When he lands, he heads off deeper into the jungle.
His trek did not go unnoticed, however. One of the Elites had heard a soft thud from behind him. He turned his neck slightly and saw the rustling of foliage. He couldn't see what it was, and his heads-up display didn't pick up any visuals, but he knew that something just left the area. One Elite raised his plasma rifle running off into the undergrowth.
Up in the tree, the Predators split up into different directions throughout the jungle. One of them stays behind and activates his plasma caster, taking aim at the nearest Elite.
The lead Elite looked around when he noticed something. There were three red dots on the chest plate of the second Elite. He traced the red light upwards to a tree branch and saw…nothing. The laser sight was coming from nothing!
Suddenly, a charged plasma blast came from that direction and struck the Elite in the chest, sending him flying onto his back. Thankfully, his energy shield absorbed the blast, but it was still powerful.
"What did I tell you, Commander?!" the Elite stated, "It's an ambush!"
"Where did it come from?!" another Elite asked.
"Right there!" the lead Elite shouted. He raised his plasma rifle and fired.
However, the range he was firing from was too distant, dissipating before it even reached the Predator. Realizing his cover was pretty much blown, the Predator deactivated his cloaking device and fired three more blasts at the targeted Elite. When the first blast hit, the Elite felt his shield begin to weaken. The second blast deactivated the shield all together. The third blast shot right through the chest plate, blowing a hole in his torso.
Sangheili Elites: 5
Elder Predators: 6
The lead Elite fired off another plasma blast at the Predator. This time, however, it managed to strike the Predator in the chest plate, causing him to fall from the tree; dead.
Sangheili Elites: 5
Elder Predators: 5
The four Elites walked towards the corpse of the Predator, too stunned for words.
"This isn't a Jiralhanae. Why didn't we pick this thing up on our scanners?" The Lead Elite asked. "How many are – The Private!"
The lead Elite ran into the jungle where the Private had ventured into, the other four Elites behind him.
Meanwhile, deep in the jungle, the Private had tracked the footprints of something to a clearing. However, he stopped when he picked up something on his scanner that was in the bush in front of him. Non-organic, but he couldn't tell what it was. A drone, perhaps? The Private turned around to see the others running towards him.
"Commander, I don't think we're alone out here." The Private said.
"I know we just came across one of those demons!" The Lead Elite said.
One of the Elites picked up something on his scanner and turned to face the Lead Predator. He snarled as he charged forward and raised his rifle. The Lead Predator on the other hand, merely pressed a few buttons on his wrist computer.
Suddenly, a loud, electrical noise was heard as whatever was in the bush exploded, zapping the five. Surprisingly, they were still standing…but their scanners had just gone offline.
"That grenade, in the bush!" the Private said, "It must have been an EM–"
He was cut off when a plasma blast made contact with the upper torso of the charging Elite, disintegrating his head.
Sangheili Elites: 4
Elder Predators: 5
The lead Elite growled as he fired at the lead Predator. The lead Predator fled into the dense jungle, dodging the plasma fire until the rifle stopped.
"Split up!" he told the others, pulling out his Plasma Pistol. "We'll flush him out!"
Entering the jungle, the remaining four split into two groups; going in two different directions.
The Private and the lead Elite carefully walked through a swampy area, rifle and pistol raised. The two looked around, trying to locate any hostile threat.
Up in a tree, a Predator pulled out his glaive and activated it. He dropped down and landed in front of the Private. Before the Private could raise his weapon, the Predator spun around and sliced through his throat; sending the head into the swamp.
Sangheili Elites: 3
Elder Predators: 5
Seeing this, The Lead Elite fired at the Predator with his pistol. The plasma blast making contact with the Predator's chest, he dropped to the ground dead.
Sangheili Elites: 3
Elder Predators: 4
With the other two Elites, they had tracked footprints to a dense area close to a shallow river. Crossing the river, the two Elites looked around with their rifles raised; fingers on the trigger. Once they cross, the first one stops the other one as he sees a Predator setting up another mine nearby. Activating his cloaking device, the Elite quickly heads towards the Predator to get in close, the second Elite close behind.
The Predator hears footsteps from behind him and turns around to see the Elite sneaking up on him. Picking up the mine, the Predator tosses it at the Elite. Upon impact, the Elite bursts into flame; screaming in agony until his screaming comes to a stop.
Sangheili Elites: 2
Elite Predators: 4
The other Elite raises his rifle and blasts the Predator's shoulder, destroying the plasma caster. The Predator then activates his Energy Flechette and fires at the Elite.
The Elite roles out of the way and hides behind a large rock. Popping out from it he fires several plasma blasts at the Predator, who also avoids the blasts and ducks behind another boulder. He returned fire, only for the Elite to hide behind his boulder again.
Back with the lead Elite, he continues his trek through the swamp until he hears a growling coming from his left. Turning, he fires at the source and shoots it dead…
Only to discover that the source was just a native predator of the planet.
However, he soon hears something sneaking up from behind and side steps the invisible assailant. When the would-be killer stepped into the water, his cloaking short circuited, revealing an Elite Predator with his glaive. The lead Elite raised his pistol, only to discover that it overheated.
Tossing the pistol aside, the lead Elite pulls out his energy sword and activates it. The Predator charges forward and slashes across the Elite's chest plate, however it only scratches it. Undeterred, the Predator thrusts the glaive forward, only for the Elite to dodge it. In a punching motion, the Elite thrusts forward and punctures the Predator through his armor and out the back.
Sangheili Elites: 2
Elder Predators: 3
Pulling the energy sword out, the lead Elite watches the Predator fall into the mud before walking off. He deactivated his sword and pulled out his rifle, which had cooled down.
Back with the second Elite, he and the Predator were still in their shootout with one another. When it was his turn again, he took aim and fired. However, his rifle had stopped. Quickly ducking behind the boulder again as the Predator began to fire, the Elite pulled out another weapon of his and pressed a button. Jumping out from behind his boulder, he tossed the grenade at the Predator just as he popped out from his boulder, before running away.
The grenade made contact with the Energy Flechette. The Predator tried to remove it, but it wouldn't budge. Suddenly, the Predator let out a dying roar as he found himself enveloped in a blinding white-blue light.
The Elite looked behind him and saw that the plasma grenade had taken out the Predator, as well as created a massive crater in the boulder.
Sangheili Elites: 2
Elder Predators: 2
The Elite's victory is short lived, however, when he hears a growling from behind him. Turning around, he sees the lead Predator in front of him. He reaches for his pistol, only to have his arm blasted off by the Predator's plasma caster; his finger still on the trigger, causing the weapon to fire rapidly. As the Elite screams in pain, the Predator slowly approaches and grabs the Elite by his throat.
Back with the lead Elite, he had just made his way out of the swamp and heard a growling from behind him. This time, however, he's ready. He turns around and fires several blasts at the source of the growling. This time, it was the actual threat he was after.
Sangheili Elites: 2
Elder Predators: 1
He had to admit, despite all of this, these things were putting up a good fight.
Suddenly, the lead Elite hears a rather familiar noise. It's the screaming of one of his soldiers. Rifle at the ready, he charges into the dense jungle until he stops at a clearing, no longer hearing the screams.
Looking around with his rifle raised, he feels a drop of liquid drip onto his hand. Looking up, he gasps in horror to see his last soldier hanging from a tree branch.
Or rather, what remained of his last soldier.
Sangheili Elites: 1
Elder Predators: 1
"Where are you, demon?!" the Elite roared out in rage. "Too afraid to fight me like a warrior rather than an animal?!"
To answer both questions, a blur came out from the trees and sliced the Elite's rifle in half. The Elite looked up and saw the last Predator standing there with his glaive in hand. Tossing the remains of his rifle to the ground, the Elite pulled out his energy sword and activated it.
The Elite lunged forward, jabbing with his energy sword. However, the Predator dodged the attack and brought his glaive down on the Elite's shoulder. He was shocked to discover that the blade merely scratched the armor. The Elite made a slashing motion, but this time, the Predator only managed to dodge slightly; feeling the blade slash his side and causing him to stumble back a bit, green blood oozing from the wound.
The Predator looked upon his wounds and nodded. He had seen what had happened with the others, and he now knew that the Elite was a worthy opponent; even more than those ape-like creatures. Because of this, he decided that his opponent had earned a reward; a rare honor for anyone skilled enough to impress him.
Reaching up with one hand, the Predator removed his Bio-Mask and tossed it to the ground, revealing his face to the Elite. Beady yellow eyes, a mouth full of razor-like teeth, and four insectoid mandibles formed the Predator's face as the hunter roared; challenging his prey.
The Elite looked on in a mixture of disgust and horror at the beast in front of him. Shaking his head to steel himself, the Elite jabbed forward again as the Predator dodged. The Predator thrust forward with his glaive, only for the Elite to jump out of the way.
The Elite slashed horizontally at his opponent, the Elder jumping out of reach as he slashed with his glaive. However, the Sangheili held his sword up to counter the blade, the plasma slicing through the alien steel. Growling but not undeterred, the Predator merely jumped back and flipped the glaive around to use the blade on the other end. Undeterred, the Elite charged and jabbed forward again, forcing the Predator to dodge again. This time, however, the Predator lifted his glaive up and swung it down onto the Elite's wrist; severing it from his arm.
The Elite screamed in pain as he clutched his arm with his other. He looked up to see the Predator towering over him. The hunter reached down and grabbed the Elite by the throat, lifting him up to his eye level as the Elite growled. Looking into his opponent's eyes, he read the message that the Elite was sending him.
The camera then cuts to an overview of the jungle, where we hear a loud scream accompanied by a sickening tearing sound. Suddenly, both noises stop.
A while later, The Predator walks back to his ship that he and his party had traveled to the planet in. Stopping only for a second, he looks at his two new trophies he had earned from this hunt.
In his left hand was the hilt of the Elite's energy sword…
And in his right hand was the Elite's skull and spine.
Sangheili Elites: 0
Elder Predators: 1
The Predator then raises his trophies skyward as he lets out a bloodcurdling roar.
Winner: Elder Predators
In the closest matchup so far this season, The Elder Predators just narrowly achieved victory with 501-victories. All of their weapons earned kills in triple-digits, their best weapons were the plasma caster and the throwing mines.
Elder Predators
Plasma Caster…176
Throwing Mines…120
Predator Glaive…105
Energy Flechette…100
Total: 501
But this was by no means an easy victory for them! The Sangheili Elites were right on their tail, earning 499-victories. Just like the Predators, all their weapons earned kills in triple-digits. Their best weapons being the plasma rifle and grenade.
Sangheili Elites
Type-25 Plasma Rifle…173
Type-1 Plasma Grenade…116
Type-1 Energy Sword…110
Type-25 Plasma Pistol…100
Total: 499
"The Predators won thanks to the range, reliability, and power of the plasma caster; as well as the fact that their superior cloaking device allowed them to go undetected by the Elite's heads-up display." Jackson explained. "The Elites may have had the stronger armor thanks to their energy shields, but once the Predators found a way around it, it was open season."
"Admittedly, I went into this fight thinking that the Predators would get curb stomped due to their weapons being designed for hunting instead of combat." Rebecca admitted. "Now though? I'm ashamed to say that I ever thought that for a second."
"I must admit, while I don't agree with the simulation, I underestimated the Predators." Thel said, "We could've used them to help in the war. And something tells me they would have enjoyed our war with the Jiralhanae."
"There was never a doubt in my mind." Royce said with a smirk. "Not even once."
(The Elite Predator places the hilt of the energy sword on his belt as he places the Sangheili's skull in his trophy room next to the Jiralhanae skull.)
With severe apologies to Halo fans.
Next time on Deadliest Fictional Warrior, two humanoid native tribesmen who defeated enemies far more advanced than themselves clash in a head-to-head duel to the death.
(A tall, blue-skinned cat-like humanoid wearing a loincloth is shown. He aims a bow at the screen, and pulls back on the arrow.)
A Na'vi Tribal Fighter, the brave warriors of Pandora who took on and defeated invading mercenaries with weapons forged from stone, bone, and wood.
Vs.
(A lanky, brown, frog-like humanoid wearing a brown vest and pants is shown. He holds up a shield of some sort while swinging a wooden club.)
A Militiagung, the semi-aquatic warriors of Naboo who aided the Republic in defeating the CIS.
Author's Note: I do apologize for the long delay, real life can be a nightmare at times; especially when you're working on other side projects. But I'm now back with the second match up for this fanfiction. And yes, I do realize how controversial this verdict is going to be.
This took a lot more looking into than I thought. And this was certainly a lot closer than I thought it was going to be, with The Elder Predators just barely edging out, in my opinion, after looking deeper into the lore of both warriors.
I originally was going to have Scarface from the video game Predator: Concrete Jungle be a representative for The Predators despite being an Elite instead of an Elder (which is only a few ranks above Elite), until I discovered Ahab from the comics who actually was an Elder. The cloaking not being visible by infrared also comes from the comics and novels.
I originally thought that the energy sword was a thrusting weapon until diving deeper into Halo lore, finding out that it was also a hacking and slashing weapon as well; much like a regular sword. Of course, it sill got the edge over the glaive even back then, too.
That's all I have to say for now. Hopefully it won't take too long for the next one. Constructive criticism is welcome, as well as requests for warriors and/or matches. Until next time, read, review, and suggest.
For legal reasons, Predator and its expanded universe are owned by Dark Horse Comics, 20th Century Fox, and…Disney, I guess.
The Sangheili Elites and Halo are owned by Bungie and Microsoft.
