Chapter 2: Tell me one more

Hiruzen ran his hand over his face as he groaned at the mountain of paperwork that he had on his desk. "It's too early for this. Why can't one of the other shinobi take the job from me?" he placed his face in his hands and ground again when he heard chuckling coming from the other visible occupant in the room.

"Oh, Hiruzen. You should really cherish such a respectable job. Not many can say they became the Hokage."

Hiruzen lifted his head and gave a soft glare at the one who spoke. "Biwako, I already went through the job once and I was looking forward to spending my remaining years in happy retirement with you." he stopped speaking as the next thing he wanted to say would have been disrespectful to Minato. The man deserved the highest respect for his contribution to the village and his sacrifice in defeating the army of monsters that had been close to invading their borders.

The monster army had almost literally come out of nowhere. There was no warning, no sign, and no time to mount a defensive response. The monsters just seemed to appear inside the village and attacked everything they saw. The shinobi had done their best to save as many people as they could while Minato rallied his forces to drive them out of the village. But there was something different about these monsters.

There was a dark aura around them and their eyes glowed red as they tore through everything. And no matter how many times you struck them down, they rose once again as if nothing happened.

And despite how shinobi are skilled in battle, they had their limits. Even Minato.

The man along with his wife stood back to back as monsters surrounded them.

It was unfortunate that Jiraiya had been sent out on a mission towards Kusagakure in the land of grass beyond the other side of the Hyrule fields and Tsunade was off on her Honeymoon with Dan in the eastern Zora domain which was just as far away.

For hours they fought against the undying army and it was when the moon was low in the sky that one of the arrows hit Minato in the shoulder.

That was what set things off.

Kushina panicked at the sight of Minato getting an arrow in the shoulder that she lost focus and was slashed in the back by one of the enemies blades

Minato saw this and grew furious and with every ounce of chakra he had, he created a massive Rasengan and plowed through many of the enemies, ignoring the attacks that came his way.

Hiruzen grimaced at the memory as he was able to catch bits of the fight as he was also defending the village. He remembered seeing his successor fall to a knew with many arrows in his back and at the mercy of one of the largest monsters of the army. He remembered watching as if in slow motion, Minato being taken out by the beast with his wife already taking a bone sword in the stomach. It was such a bloody night, that the red moon that rose in the sky seemed to be appropriate for it

He shook away those thoughts as he had no time to think for it. He sighed as he began to work again on the work on his desk.

Biwako smiled at her husbands tiring work and brought out a bento for him to eat later on

Hiruzen smiled at Biwako for the kind gesture but they were brought out of this moment when they heard someone knock on the door. Internally smiling at the delay to his workload, the Hokage called out "Enter." he was a little surprised to see Yugao walk into his office. He wondered why she would come here since she had the day off. But he knew that she would not come if it wasn't something that he needed to know. "Ah, Yugao, what can I help you with?"

Yugao bowed to both the Hokage and his wife before looking at the village leader. "Sir, I thought you would like to know that Naruto has once again entered the Forest of death. Most likely heading through the Lost woods into Kokiri Village."

Hiruzen groaned at hearing this. "That boy…. He will be the death of me one of these days."

Biwako looked at her husband with a rueful smile. "You are not allowed to do so until I wish for it." her smile dropped and turned into a look of concern as she looked at the purple-haired woman. "Did he go off on his own again?"

Yugao shook her head. "No, before I saw him running towards the forest, a fairy bumped into me and flew off in the direction of his apartment. I would assume that he was guided through the forest, this time by the fairy."

Hiruzen rubbed his forehead as he gave a sigh of relief. "At least I won't have to worry so much about him becoming lost in those accursed woods." He didn't say this in any form of malice but many shinobi had become lost in those woods and never seen or heard from again. It is why there was an order to all shinobi that no one is allowed to go into the forest.

Naruto apparently didn't get that memo.

Naruto is the only one that is able to enter the forest with, or without, a fairy. He wasn't sure how the boy was able to do so but he did not dwell on it so much. The forest, along with the children, were under the protection of the Great Deku Tree. Hiruzen had met the tree only once when Naruto had guided him into the village and the old man was astonished at the power and wisdom the Great Deku tree had. He had asked the Deku Tree if he was the one that allowed Naruto the ability to travel into the Lost Woods and not end up like many of the others that ended up lost. To his shock, he learned that not even the Deku tree knew how Naruto was able to do such a thing. It just seemed like a mystery that might never be found out. But as long as Naruto was alright, he would just accept it. Regardless of his worry that one day he might end up lost in those dreaded woods

Hiruzen then thought about a message he receive not that long ago from Suna. he opened one of the drawers on his desk and searched for the message from Suna. he still had some time before he had to respond but now that thesis was brought up, he might as well look it over again and think of a proper response. Finding it, he pulled it out and looked it over. "I suppose it is a good thing you brought this up, Yugao."

Yugao tilted her head "how so, Lord Hokage?"

Hiruzen kept reading the document as he answered. "I received this request from Suna about a week ago. They are requesting visitation rights into our village as there is someone that wished to meet with the Great Deku Tree at some point in the future. The person went through some lengths in order to have this request be answered positively as this message also has the seal of the Royal Family of Hyrule. The reason that it is coming from Suna rather than directly from Hyrule is that there will be some of Suna Shinobi coming along with the one who gave the request as an escort. With how impossible it is for anyone other than Naruto to enter the forest, I will be asking the boy if he is willing to be their guide to the Great Deku Tree."

Yugao tilted her head. "I wonder why this person would want to meet the Great Deku Tree? I may not have met him before but from the stories I have heard, he is just a very old and wise guardian of the forest."

Hiurzen shook his head. "It was not mentioned but I would assume it is a personal matter. We were just asked to offer them passage and we should respect the Royal family.

Biwako smiled at the thought of the boy they were talking about. "I wonder what the boy is doing there so early in the morning."

Hiruzen leaned back and smiled. "If I had to guess, he is enjoying his time with his friend as they eat breakfast."

~Kokiri village~

"ACHOO! Wah! Ah!" Naruto sneezed before he juggled the things in his arms trying to make sure none of them fell to the ground

"Careful!" was Saria's cry of worry as she saw her friend trying to keep all of the food he had in his arms from falling

Naruto was able to catch all of the food and gave a sigh of relief. "That was close." he looked at the food in his arms and smiled at it as he was hungry and couldn't wait till they got to where they were heading. He looked behind him and called out. "Come on, Link. if we don't hurry it will be lunchtime instead of breakfast!"

Link was running behind the gorp as he had almost twice as much food as the other two. "Don't go off without me."

Saria shook her head as she looked at him with a smile. "If you weren't such a glutton then we would have been there by now."

Link just gave her a look that said. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Naruto smiled as he looked ahead through the forest and enjoyed the peaceful air that just permeated everywhere. He always enjoyed coming here as there was nowhere else he would find peace. "We should almost be there."

Saria's fairy flew from her to Naruto and spun around his head. "We might have been there sooner as well if you weren't taking your time looking around the shop for what to eat."

Naruto wanted to swat the fairy a bit but with his arms full, he couldn't. "Hey, it's not my fault. I haven't gone searching for Rupees in a while, so I had to make sure everything was within my budget."

Rupees. The currency used by all magic users in the world. Rupees are actually concentrated magic given physical form in the shape of colored gems that can be found almost anywhere. When magic takes the shape of rupees, they lose almost all forms of magic and are just seen as valuable jewels and were long ago considered the currency based on the coloration.

Due to the hostilities towards magic users, Chakra users made their own currency using metals since they were unable to create crystalized chakra in any way. Despite how a good amount of people would have been happy with just one set of currency, the ones that were hostile against the other side allowed the usage of Ryo in a sort of way of showing the separation of the two users. So there are two forms of currency out there in the world. Ryo and Rupees and despite how Rupees are far more plentiful and easier to gain, it is extremely time-consuming and unreliable on how much you can get. so both currencies are usable, though there are some value discrepancies. There is also another factor that seems to be part of collecting Rupees.

Luck

And for some reason, Naruto has an abundance of it. But very few people knew this so he wasn't hounded with gathering Rupees.

Saria moved over to Naruto and looked at her fairy with a teasing smile. "You know how picky he can be. He probably still hates how there aren't any Ramen cups for him to eat."

Naruto gave a deadpan glare to the two. "Reman isn't the only thing I eat. I eat plenty of other things."

Link walked up to stand to his right as he said. "Well, you do enjoy it a lot."

Naruto turned his glare to Link. "says the guy that enjoys eating….in general."

Link just smiled and shoulder bumped him so he wouldn't drop the food

Saria smiled as she moved ahead and gestured with his head. "Come on, boys. We should really get going."

Link and Naruto nodded as they followed her through the forest.

For the next few minutes, the three continued to walk through the massive trees, hopping over logs and under massive uprooted roots. Soon they walked through a tunnel made of intertwined massive roots and they came out into a clearing that was encircled by trees so close to each other that they could be considered a wall. In the center of the clearing was a single tree.

The thing that made this tree different from the others was that this tree was massive, many times larger than any tree ever seen in any other forest. In fact, it was nearly impossible to see the top of the tree as it looked like it continued forever. Another thing that can be considered odd about the tree was that on the side that was facing them, there were discolored sections of bark that seemed to make an elderly face on the tree.

Naruto smiled wide as he ran forward till he was standing directly up at the "face" of the tree. "We made it! Sorry, we're late!"

"Hm hm hm, I see you are as energetic as ever, young Naruto."

Naruto just smiled cheekily at that. "What can I say, Who would I be if I wasn't?"

"You would probably be more like Link. you've both got blond hair and all." Saria came up to stand next to Naruto with Link joining them.

Link smiled at his friends before he looked up at the tree. "Sorry, we are late, Great Deku Tree."

The three kids stood in the presence of the guardian of the Lost Woods and the Kokiri children, the Great Deku Tree.

"It is alright, young Link. I am just glad that you three have come once more to join me in this wonderful morning."

The three kids nodded as the female of the group reached into her hip pouch and pulled out a large blanket with her free hand and placed it on the ground before using it to spread the blanket flat. Once that was done, the kids put their food on the ground and sat in a small circle.

Naruto looked up at the Deku Tree and asked. "Can we hear another story? Maybe another one about the royal family? Or maybe the goddesses."

Naruto enjoyed listening to stories that had magic users in them. He didn't know why since he wasn't one but he figured that it was because he couldn't use magic that he enjoyed them. He had seen what shinobi can do and he thought they were cool but jutsus were something he could learn to do but magic…he smiled at what could be done with it. Magic just seemed so….magical.

And the thing is that a lot of the stories the Great Deku tree told had to do with the royal family or the goddesses.

The great Deku tree chuckled and thought about a new story he could tell the kids. It was then that he thought of one that he hadn't told them yet. "Well, this one is a little different from the previous ones I told you." he saw that the three were giving him their attention as they ate some of the food that they bought. "This one is about one of the worlds connected to this one."

Saria tilted her head at this. "There are different worlds connected to ours?"

The Deku Tree gave a hum of acknowledgment. "Yes. They can be seen as mirror worlds to our own but can also be seen as vastly different. As for this world, I will tell you, this is about a world that can be seen in your very own shadow…"

The kids looked down at their own shadows as if trying to see if they could get a glimpse of this other world

"This world is ruled by a Princess. This princess ruled her kingdom with a fair hand and was respected and loved by all her subjects. She loved everyone in her kingdom and was said to do what she could to keep them safe. As such, she made sure that there was no way for their world and ours to ever interact. In their world are creatures that might seem intimidating to us but they are as gentle as the birds that sing in our forest….."

As the Deku tree continued to tell the tale, the children sat there listening about a world different from their own. They didn't even realize they had finished their food as they stared up at the Forest guardian

~hours later~

The kids waved goodbye to the Deku Tree as they finished listening to his story and afterward, played around the tree and ended their time there listening to Saria play her song.

It was now about 1 PM as the children left to go about their day.

The great Deku tree watched them leave with a chuckle and used his roots to make sure they made it back to Kokiri village. Once he was sure that they were there, his cheery mood dropped as he gave a contemplative hum. "The hand of darkness is reaching out through the land. I can feel it getting ready to cast evil on all that live." he focused on the presence of the very children that left and wondered to himself. "I feel that the destiny of Link and Saria is coming soon. Though I do not know what their destiny truly is, I hope that you can help them along the way, young Naruto. I wish I could get a feel for your own Destiny but perhaps it is not for me to know. The princess of Destiny might know and I pray you stay strong."

~Kokiri village~

The three made it back to the village and talked about the other world they were told.

Link turned to his friends and asked "What do you think a world in our shadow is like? I mean could it really be that different from our own?"

Saria shrugged. "Who knows. But it is interesting to hear that there is a world connected to our own but can't be seen by anyone."

Naruto thought about that and shivered at a random thought. "Almost sounds like they are ghosts. I really don't want to meet them if they are ghosts or some other kind of spirit."

"Boo!"

Naruto screamed as he jumped in the air and grabbed onto the side of one of the trunk houses. Hearing laughter he looked down to see that Link was holding his sides laughing while Saria tried to hide her giggles. He glared at the girl as she was the one that did that. "Very funny."

Saria wiped a tear from her eyes as she gave an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Naruto, but I couldn't resist."

Link got a hold of his laughing as he walked up to Naruto and patted him on the shoulder. "Don't worry, Naruto. Everyone is afraid of something."

Naruto glared at Link and asked. "Oh yeah? Then what are you afraid of?"

Link smiled at them as he answered. "Losing my friends."

Both Saria and Naruto looked at Link with a somber look till the female of the group grabbed Naruto's and Link's arm before pulling them into a group hug. "That sounded so sappy, Link."

Naruto nodded as he hugged his friends. "Yeah. leave that kind of thing to Saria." he got a light tap on the head but smiled all the same.

Link hugged his friends and shrugged. "Well, I don't have to worry about it anyway."

The three stayed that way for a few more seconds with Saria's fairy circling around them, till they split apart and Sarai suggested they head to her spot.

The two males nodded and they ran off towards the lost woods.

In another part of the lost forest was an area that seemed to be the entrance of a hidden temple. In a clearing that had an opening that looked like it could be the opening, suspended a few stories up, was a stone platform that had an odd symbol on it. This clearing was Saria's spot. Where Sairia would usually come to play her music. It also became a sort of hideout for the three when they felt like just hanging out by themselves. It is where Naruto met up with Saria earlier.

The three avoided the maze to this spot using the ladder that went up to the top of the walls and they hopped over the gaps.

Saria sat on a stump that was below the entrance and pulled out her ocarina before she began to play her song.

Link and Naruto sat on the stone platform and listened to Saria play her song

As Saria played, Naruto watched her fairy float around her head in the rhythm of the music. He then looked to Link and asked. "So Link, still haven't gotten your fairy yet?"

Link shook his head. "No, but I'm not worried about it. I know I'll get my own fairy one day."

Naruto nodded. "I agree. You'll get one one day. But till then…." he got up from his sitting position and walked towards Saria.

Link titled his head in confusion as he watched Naruto walk to Saria's side

Saria continued to play but opened her left eye to see Naruto at her side. She nodded to him as she continued

Naruto walked behind the stump before reaching down and picking up an object. He then turned back and walked towards Link

Saria hopped off the stump while still playing and walked in step with Naruto.

Link was confused about what they were doing but waited. Once he saw they were a few feet in front of him, he saw Naruto take a step forward and hand him something. Something wrapped up. He looked at them in confusion and saw Saria finish her song and open her eyes. He saw both Saria and ANruto give each other a nod before facing him and saying in unison

"Happy Birthday, Link."

Link's eyes widened as he looked at the parcel in his hands. 'It's my birthday? I forgot all about it.' He slowly removed the wrapping and smiled at what it was. He looked up and gave them a look. "This was Naruto's idea wasn't it?"

Naruto shook his head and pointed to the girl. "You can blame her for this. She was the one that thought about giving this to you."

Saria shrugged with a wide smile on her face.

Link smiled as he looked at his gift once again. He smiled as he raised his gift in the air and gave a slight cheer.

Naruto shook his head as he spoke, "You got the slingshot."

The three spent more time in the little cove till Naruto had to head back since he had something important to do.

Naruto was waved goodbye to Link and Saria as he began to make his trek through the lost woods towards Konoha. Naruto had a bg simple on his face as he always enjoyed spending time with his friends from the Kokiri village. As he was walking through the lost woods, he heard some laughter coming from the shadows of the woods. He looked at where the laughing was coming from and he caught sight of a red straw hat and some jingling that sounded like wood sticks jumping together. Naruto continued to walk as he kept his gaze on the spot till he walked a dozen feet away before he looked forward. He kept hearing the same noize following but made no sign that he knew that it was getting closer.

Ahead of the blonde, behind a tree was a chuckling skull kid. He tried to muffled his laughter as he slowly leaned his head to the side of the tree. But he then grew confused as he saw that the blonde wasn't there anymore. He tilted his head as he looked around but when turned back he jumped at the sight of the blonde standing there with a smirk on his face.

"Nice try. But it looks like I got you again."

The skull kid shook his head before crossing his arms. "No fair. I had you this time."

Naruto smiled as he pointed at the Skull kid. "You gave yourself away by chuckling." seeing the Skull kid out he stepped forward and patted him on the shoulder. "Hey, you almost got me but you gotta try and hold it in till you get me."

The Skull kid nodded as he mentally tallied another mark for Naruto.

Naruto smiled at Skull Kid before he gestured over his shoulder. "I wish I could stay and play longer but I gotta get going."

"Aw. Do you have to?"

Naruto nodded. "Yeah. there is something I need to do and if I don't hurry, I'm going to be late."

Skull Kid pouted but nodded. "Ok, but you better come to play sometime."

Naruto gave a foxy grin as he nodded. "You know I will." he turned around and began to run off. He looked over his shoulder and waved. "Bye. See ya later!"

Skull kid waved back and waited till he couldn't see Naruto. Once his friend was gone, he spun around and jumped up in the air before disappearing in a sparkle of leaves.

Naruto made it to the forest edge and covered his eyes as the sun was shining brightly. Getting his sight back, he looked in a certain direction and ran off as fast as he could. "I should be able to make it in time at this rate!" Naruto swerved around the civilians that called out that he should watch where he was going and to be careful. He halfheartedly called back to them that he was sorry but he needed to be there. For another ten minutes, he ran till he made it to one of the training grounds. He panted a bit before he regained his breath and stood up straight and walked towards his destination. As he got closer, he saw someone already there and facing away from him. He walked closer to the man without a second thought.

"You were almost late. Have fun with your fairy friends?"

Naruto stopped at the man's side as he looked at what the man was gazing at. "Yeah. but your the last person to say anything about being late, Kakashi."

Kakashi chuckled at that as he lifted his hand and patted Naruto on the head. "Maybe. But you can blame my old friend for that."

The two now stood in silence as they gazed at the memorial stone. Both eyeing certain names that were etched on it.

Kakashi; eyeing the name of his old team. Rin and Obito. Rin died from a monster ambush while they were on a simple escort mission. Obito from a rogue shinobi group that was listed as wanted by the royal family for thievery and transports.

Naruto's gaze was on two names.

Minato Namikaze

Kushina Uzumaki

His parents.

"Can you tell me another story about them, Kakashi?" Naruto had only blurry memories of his parents as they died when he was just a baby. If he focused on the earlier memory, he can see lurry outlines but that was all he could muster.

Kakashi looked up in thought as he tried to think of what to say. "Well… I do remember this one-time Kushain interrupted us during one of Minto's training sessions. Kushina was actually the fourth one to arrive at the training field and when Obito came running in late, she scolded him like he committed the biggest crime. Terrified all of us and he looked to use for help but no one wanted to get in the way of your mother. She scolded him for about fifteen minutes before she let him off…. with a hard hit to the head. Your father whispered to me that not even he can stop your mother when she is in a scolding mood. Rin ran to him to make sure the bump on his head wasn't that bad." he chuckled at this next part. "Once Kushina saw that, she immediately pulled them into a massive hug and swung them around while saying they were the cutest couple she had ever seen…."

Naruto listened to the story while keeping his gaze on his parents' names. Tears fell from his eyes as he heard more about the parents he could have had. But he never lost his smile. He wouldn't want to worry them by frowning in front of the stone.

This was a way to help both of them as they missed someone they lost. Kakashi got to reminisce on happy times with his friends while Naruto got to learn more about his parents

The two continued to stand there as Kakashi talked about Minato, Kushina, Obito, and Rin.

And Naruto did his best not to let the pain in his heart get the better of him. He had to be strong so he wouldn't worry anyone around him…...or his parents

End of chapter

I was going to keep going but this was a good place to stop.

There are some things in the Zelda world that are hard to bring up without making it seem contrived. But I think I did a pretty decent job with the mixing of another Zelda game into this

Now I was a little on the fence about making Link able to talk and I had the idea of Naruto being able to understand Link despite him not saying anything but I figured that since Link is another main character, I couldn't just have him silent. There might be moments where I do the NAruto understands a silent link but it won't be the prominent gag.

I couldn't help myself with the slingshot and Naruto saying that.

Now important details

I am using the map from Breath of the wild as a basis for the layout of the world since it is the biggest map for the Zelda world. It isn't going to be exact but it will be similar. Like this, I want to have Konoha on the right side of the map a bit more distant from Death mountain. Suna will be where that Gerudo desert is….I feel like I'm gonna have to draw a map for more clarity…..damn. new challenge. though Hyrule castle will be in the same spot, dead center of all of it. Overall the world in this fic is MASSIVE

Now I have already introduced the Great Deku Tree and the Kokiri children. As well as the skull kid and the like but there is one VERY IMPORTANT thing I want to ask

WHICH ZELDA SHOULD I USE.

Despite how the base seems to be Ocarina of time, it should be noted that I am mixing up MULTIPLE Zelda games into this...and I fear I might screw up at one point. But to avoid that I would like opinions and suggestions. They help me out and I avoid putting something stupid

Anyway since it will be some time till Zelda is introduced, I have set up a poll on my profile so go and vote for which Zelda should be used. This isn't for pairing, more so just character usage. Also, if I missed a Zelda then let me know and I'll add the version.

PS if an older version of Zelda is chosen, such as Twilight Princess, she will be de-aged to be more aligned with the age of Link and Naruto. For potential pairing or just being more intertwined in them.

PAIRING IS STILL UP IN THE AIR...and whether it be multi for both
