After SAPR Was Revived
BGM: Peach's Castle (Super Mario RPG 2023)
Pop!
Pop pop pop pop!
"A toast for getting rid of The End for good and for SAPR on her road to recovery!" Ford said to his fellow eggheads. Some of them had already left to go celebrate on their own terms, but some decided to stick around.
"Yeah!"
Ford proceeded to pour champagne in the glasses, though he paused on Futaba and Jade. "Wait… how old are you guys again?" He wondered before he switched to a cranberry soda, switched the glasses around and poured for the ladies.
"What's the legal age here?" Futaba whispered.
"Eighteen… twenty one… Somewhere in there. I don't remember it myself." Jade shrugged.
"Eh, not like I'll see myself drinking anyway." Futaba shrugged it off as the two chugged it down while clinking their glasses while Miu drank Futaba and Jade's original glasses that Ford accidentally poured for the two.
"By the way, Ford." Nitori spoke up. "I was looking in your journal…"
"Mhm."
"You definitely missed a few areas. There's a few other places in Gensokyo that you haven't been to."
"Ah, right, I've heard about some of them in passing, but I thought I could use a miniature break from Gensokyo. Clear my head from SAPR's ill progress."
"And now that SAPR's awake and currently being remodeled… you… want to head back?"
"Sure. I'm down for another visit!"
"Awesome!"
"You know, I'm glad you said something because I was going to say something myself." Patchouli said. "Shall we then?"
"I'll go see if Pacifica's available." Nitori took off running.
Ford chuckled. "Glad you came in at the right time."
"We were just curious how the operation was going. It seems we came at a good time." Patchouli said with Koakuma nodding.
"Indeed." Ford nodded as they walked out together as Jade's scroll went off.
"Hmm?" Jade wondered as she looked into it, seeing it was a text from Myra. "Oh… she's ready to take on Dialga…"
Futaba narrowed her eyes. "Let's get some back up. He's part Steel type, so I think Ann would be perfect back up." She then snickered. "And honestly, if Makoto was a Pokemon, she'd be Fighting type easily… so let's get her too!" She giggled as she and Jade took off running.
"Take on Dialga…? Why would this Myra person do that…?" Penny wondered.
"Hell if I know." Kazuichi shrugged.

Later…
"I've been curious about Gensokyo ever since you started doing your research there. I'm glad I got to be invited." Pacifica smiled, fist bumping Nitori. "Oh, would it be okay if they came along too?"
She pointed her thumb over to Ed, Al and Winry.
"I invited them along."
"Sure, the more the merrier." Ford smiled.
"Sweet! Let's go!" Ed grinned.
"I could use a change of scenery." Winry admitted.
"Let me just get Yukari-"
A gap opened up as they turned to see Yukari peeking her head out.
"You rang~?" She smiled with a giggle as they walked into the gap.
BGM: Usual Days (Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody)
The group found themselves pop in near the Misty Lake. "Have fun~!" Yukari wandered off.
"Wow! The lake is gorgeous~!" Winry said.
"I'll say!" Pacifica nodded as they walked along the edge of the lake with everyone accompanying them.
"Isn't this place crawling with those Monster things?" Al wondered.
"Pffft, I'm sure it'll be fine." Ed waved it off. "I mean, it's not like we're gonna run into a Magnamalo or a Fatalis or anything, right?"
"Hopefully not." Winry said.
"I want to tell him…" Koakuma whispered.
"Now now, let's not spoil it." Patchouli chuckled as Ed noticed a few fairies fly by.
"Hmm… they look tiny." Edward mused before he grinned. "Tinier than me… finally! I'm actually taller than someone now!" He chuckled, before gloom set in as he sulked in depression. "Aaaaand I just made myself depressed…"
"There there." Winry and Pacifica patted him on the back.
"You're taller than Paz, at least." Nitori pointed out.. "...Then again, she's gonna grow up and be taller than you as she gets older and-" She noticed Ed sinking lower into depression. "Aaaaaand I'll shut up now."
Ford then noticed a camping spot up ahead. "Oh? Guess we have some campers." He said as he curiously walked over. "Do you normally have campers around Gensokyo?"
"There's the occasional camping spot near Youkai Mountain, but I don't think I've ever heard of a spot at Misty Lake." Patchouli mentioned. "It must be a new camping spot that opened up."
"Ah, I see activity up ahead." Koakuma said as they walked over and would see that Team LAFF were there, alongside Becky, Logue, Oran, Anya, Lobster Siren and even Tails were with them alongside Cirno, Daiyousei and Rumia. Also accompanying them were Maki, Blanche and even Loid.
"Oh, Tails is here too?" Nitori wondered curiously as they walked over toward them.
"Wow, so you're the three we've heard so much about?" Laura asked.
"You're darn right! You're looking at the strongest fairy in Gensokyo!" Cirno boasted.
"That we know of." Magnolia faked a cough.
Tails let out a chuckle as he spotted Ford and the gang approaching. "Oh, hey guys!"
"Hey, Tails. What brings you over here?" Nitori asked.
"Ah, I needed a break after SAPR revived and Oran invited me along, so I thought "Why not"?" Tails smiled.
"Cool!"
"I think it's great that SAPR is finally revived. It's such a relief." Winry said.
"Right? We don't have to stress over that anymore." Nitori smiled with Tails nodding in agreement.
"I was worried she was never coming back, but she finally pulled through after much trial and error." Tails said.
"I wonder what Eggman is gonna do with her…" Winry wondered. "...I'm sure it'll be fine. Hopefully."
"Mr. Pines. I've heard much about you." Loid said as he approached.
"Ah, Mr. Forger. I've heard a great deal about you too." Ford greeted, both of them shaking on it.
"What brings you here?" He asked.
"Ah, just researching a few loose ends." Ford explained. "How about you? How's the family treatin' ya?"
"I'm doing well. It's just me, Anya, Oran, Bereto and Qrow at the house currently."
"Oh?"
"After Ruby and Yang went off to Paldea, Raven decided to go camping for a bit and took Maia and Tai with her. Rosalina and Dorothea decided to take Byleth on a cruise. As for Bereto, he's trying to work up the courage to ask his crush out with… little success."
"Ah, I see." Ford mused. "And you decided to come here?"
"Magnolia invited Laura and Albedo to Gensokyo, and they invited Oran and Anya along, where they invited Lobster Siren to tag along."
"So you left Qrow alone?"
"He's off hanging out with his new friend, Wade."
Ford grimaced. "It's good that he made a new friend, but… Deadpool, of all people?"
"It surprised me, but those two are good friends. Wade's made some other friends as well that, well, you can't help but admire it."
Ford chuckled. "Fair enough. So… who's watching the house?"
"A family friend."
Meanwhile…
"WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU~!" Ibuki sang along with a plethora of Lumas all jamming out on mini electric guitars with some of them even wearing face paint. "Sing it~!" She pointed toward Zwei and Cerberus.
"Awooo awoo, awooo awoo, woo woo~!"
"Beautiful~!"
Back with the others…
"Fair enough. But I'm surprised you haven't considered Tai's parents to house sit."
"Zhang's not one for house sitting. Last I heard, he and Luce are doing something together."
Meanwhile…
"Now hold this pose and breathe slowly…" Wii Fit Trainer instructed, doing the tree pose.
"Hmhmhmhm~" Luce hummed as she did it gracefully.
As for Zhang, he was barely keeping himself steady and sweating profusely.
"I swear… Yoga was made by the Brother of Darkness himself… hnnngh…! For what… his own amusement…?!"
Back with them…
Ford smiled. "I'm sure they're getting along just fine."
"Indeed." Loid smiled back.
"Hmm…" Ford looked at the crowd. "I'm noticing not all of Team DABEE are here."
"Ah, that is because Emile was busy helping out at the family farm and Damian and Ewen wanted to help out."
"Fair enough."
With the crew…
"Hey, by the way, guys." Cirno spoke up. "I also invited some friends along. They should be here at any moment."
"Oh? Who are they?" Oran wondered as three fairies flew over toward them.
"Introducing the three Fairies of Light!" Cirno said. "There's Sunny Milk-"
"Hi!"
"Luna Child-"
"Hello!"
"-And Star Sapphire."
"Heya~!"
Ford overheard the conversation. "The Three Fairies of Light?" He wondered as he curiously walked over to them with Loid accompanying him.
"Oh, these three…" Patchouli said.
"Hmm? You look new…" Sunny mused, looking over at Ford. "And yet, a bit familiar."
"Oh, wait a moment! You're that guy who owns the Mystery Zo-... oh, wait, six fingers. You're his brother then!" Star said.
"Indeed, I am." Ford nodded. "You mind if I took some notes from you three? I've never encountered you three before."
"Go for it~!" Sunny giggled.
Several notes taken later…
"Alright… now I must be off." Ford said, nodding respectfully at the three fairies and took off with the others.
"I have to say, you handled that pretty well." Nitori said.
"How so?"
"Well… those three tend to be… moronic." Nitori explained, as Magnolia's ears twitched despite Nitori assuming they were out of range.
"...Oh no." Magnolia whimpered.
"So, where to first?" Ford asked.
"Well, last time you were here, you were quite interested in a field of sunflowers, right?"
"Of course! I've heard rumors that they are not ordinary sunflowers."
The Youkai glanced at each other with concern, causing Pacifica, the Elric brothers and Winry to raise eyebrows.
"We're gonna have to exercise caution around there… just to be on the safe side." Patchouli said.
"Oh? What kind of dangerous Youkai lives there?"
"Just… try not to make her upset." Koakuma said.
End BGM
Once at the Garden of the Sun…
"Hmm… that's quite the story." Ford mused as they told him about Yuuka.
"So you mean to tell me Marisa stole Master Spark from her?" Ed asked.
"THAT'S what you got out of it?!" Pacifica, Al and Winry said in unison.
"What? I'm just sayin'!"
Ford walked up to some peculiar sunflowers that turned to look at him. "Interesting… they move to look at you when you get closer…"
"I thought I sensed some visitors." A voice said as the sunflowers parted away to reveal Yuuka approaching them. "As such, I was not expecting the author of the journals to arrive in my domain…"
"You've heard of me?"
"Indeed. I read your journals in my spare time." Yuuka said, pulling out a copy. "I must say, I'm glad it's you and not your… shall we say… con man of a brother of yours. I've heard all about his antics."
"I can't say I'm surprised."
"Indeed. He should consider himself lucky that he's not here… Otherwise I would have him beaten senseless by my sunflowers."
Inside Ford's mind…
"AHHHH! I'M BEING BEATEN BY CUTE FLOWERS! THIS IS THE MOST HUMILIATING DAY OF MY LIFE!"
Back in reality…
"As… amusing as that would be, I do not wish harm on my brother, no matter how… obnoxious he gets with his shenanigans."
"Oh, you're a spoil sport." Yuuka giggled with a slight hint of malicious mischievousness that sent a shiver up the Elric Brothers and Winry's spines. Pacifica didn't show it but there was a deep chill that got her.
"I've heard a great deal about you myself." Ford said. "How you're the guardian of this patch of sunflowers."
"Indeed. I trust that Patchouli has told me about… well, my tendencies?"
"Yes."
"Good~ I wouldn't want anyone to get themselves killed out here today… especially the short stack~"
"SHORTSTACK?! WHO ARE YOU CALLING-"
Yuuka flashed a malicious grin at Edward, complete with a malicious "Try me, pipsqueak" look in her face.
"Mmmph…" Edward shivered at the spot and sunk to the ground. "Never mind… call me short all you want…"
"Whoa… she's got him on a leash…" Al shuddered as Winry and Pacifica patted him on the back while warily looking at Yuuka.
"Come, I'll show you around my garden~" Yuuka smiled as she walked off with the others following her, along with a sulking Edward.
Back at the Misty Lake…
BGM: Argue For and Against (Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody)
"So you guys like to liven things up too?" Albedo asked.
"Mhm!" Sunny nodded.
"And you guys like to cause mischief just like us!" Nick smiled.
"Yup!" Star giggled.
"Oh, man… just wait 'til Damian meets you three, the six of us are gonna be unstoppable!" Nick grinned.
"Don't forget Cirno!" Albedo pointed out.
"Oh, right, seven!"
Nearby, Magnolia was pounding her head against a nearby tree in dismay. "Why! Do! Morons! Get! Attracted! To! Those! Two?! Why! Am! I! Always! Such! A! Moron! Magnet?!"
She pulled away as a light bruise was on her forehead, slowly fading thanks to her aura.
"Okay. Okay. Deep breath. Luna and Sunny are the ones I need to be wary over… Star is the calmer of the three."
She let out a groan.
"But even if she's calmer compared to the three, she's still a moron like all of them. Auuuugh!"
"Oh, relax, Maggie." Cirno put an arm around Magnolia's shoulder. "We're just trying to make your life more magical~!"
"Magically thrilling or magically painful?"
"Thrilling… duh!"
Magnolia groaned. "That just makes it worse…"
Nearby, Luna peeked over at Blanche who was busily drawing on her digital tablet. "What ya working on?"
"A commissioned piece for a client."
"Oh cool!" Luna said as she studied Blanche's art style, her eyes widening in surprise. "I thought I recognized the art style! You were the one who illustrated The Legend of Zelda: Knights of Skyloft!"
"Oh, you were able to identify it so easily?"
"Yeah! Even if you're just currently sketching it out, I could easily recognize the style. It looks really similar compared to the light novel."
Blanche smiled. "Oh, I feel honored that my art skills are easily recognized."
"You're welcome~!" Luna smiled.
Nearby, Daiyousei noticed Laura working on a report. "Hmm? What ya writing… or trying to at least?"
"Agh, I've been working on my "Greatest Expectations" essay. I've been blanking out on a few things." Laura explained.
"Greatest Expectations…?" Daiyousei asked.
Laura sighed deeply.
"To make up for your failed standardized test results, I'm giving you a two-page personal essay homework assignment. Not about literature or history, but about you. What are your expectations, Ms. Winchester? What kind of person do you want to be?" Run's voice echoed in her head.
"I'm a very smart student, but I kept failing my standardized tests on purpose because… I'm sick of being able to pick up on a lot of things without much effort, I feel undeserving of a lot of achievements that I actually never worked hard for, and even worse… my own IQ of 175 is both a blessing and a curse…"
"Oh, I guess that makes se-... wait, what was that last part?!" Daiyousei asked in shock.
"You heard right…"
"Oh my…" Daiyousei put her hand over her mouth in awe. "Hmm… maybe I can help you with it. Do you have anything in mind?"
"Well, there's this one idea… but I haven't shared it with anyone else. Not until the time is right."
"My lips are sealed."
Pause BGM
Back with the others…
Yuuka sipped her tea, feeling everyone's nervousness around her. It didn't bother her in the slightest as she enjoyed the company, not to mention it felt empowering that she was the alpha in this situation.
"It's quite charming that you decided to take an interest in my sunflowers and putting them into your research journal."
"Indeed… so let me ask you something. How is your relationship with these sunflowers anyway?" Ford asked.
…Uh oh. The Youkai behind him thought as Ford suddenly felt the air thicken around him as if the temperature had increased while the sunflowers leaned in, seeming to listen intently as Yuuka narrowed her eyes in hostility.
"What do you mean by that…?"
Ford shifted his eyes. "Hey, you ever wondered why a few of those sunflowers seem a little brighter compared to the rest?" He asked, pointing toward a few random sunflowers. Said sunflowers seemed to blush while the others looked on in envy.
"Hmm, what do you know… they do." Yuuka hummed. "Good eye. You may live for another day and-"
She turned around to see blinking white outlines of everyone.
"Oh. Maybe I was a little too harsh… Oh well, it can't be helped. Such a shame, really… he did seem a bit hunky."
A little ways away…
"Okay… I feel like I was about to die there." Pacifica huffed, her hands on her knees. "Death by sunflowers is not how I envisioned myself to go."
"I didn't think that would nearly set her off." Ford said, wiping some sweat off of his forehead.
"That's the thing. She's a ticking time bomb and the slightest thing could set her off." Patchouli said, focusing on her breathing.
"So, anywhere else?" Ford asked.
"I got a safer option." Nitori said. "You've only been at my area at Youkai Mountain, but you've never been to the peak."
"I've heard from Reimu there was a shrine up there."
"Yeah!" Nitori nodded. "Let's go over there!"
Later, at the top of Youkai Mountain…
"Here we are, the Moriya Shrine!" Nitori said.
"Wow…" Ford said in awe. "The atmosphere around here is… is… a bit overwhelming compared to the Hakurei Shrine."
"Oh, we weren't expecting any visitors~" A voice said as wind suddenly wrapped around Ford as Kanako approached them. "I've heard about you… You're the brother of that conman, aren't you? Stanford Pines."
"You've heard of me?"
"Why, Sanae wouldn't stop raving about the Mystery Zone in the Mushroom Kingdom. In fact, Suwako thought it was praiseworthy. Sanae even gave us pictures of the whole ordeal… it was quite charming… though, she did feel as if the owner was a bit too eccentric."
"That's one way of putting it."
Kanako chuckled. "He's opportunistic, just like I am… You see, Gensokyo is a land of opportunity in my eyes. Anything to make a quick buck and make the shrine more divine as it is, I'm all for it. What do you say? We strike a deal and become business partners together? The Mystery Zone could benefit-"
"I'll pass, thank you."
"You sure? Oh well, your loss… but if you change your mind~" Kanako walked away. "Come, right this way. The shrine is welcoming to all individuals~"
Ford grimaced. Oh, geez… she's somehow worse than my brother. I didn't think that was possible.
"She's… straightforward." Edward said as they started to walk, but he felt his shoes feeling wet on the inside. "Wah! Why are the inside of my shoes filled with water?! Nitori!"
"It's not me, I swear!" Nitori put her hands up defensively.
There was a mischievous giggle as Suwako peeked around Edward. "That was all me~!" She smiled as she walked around him with a happy smile. "I'm Suwako! And… you must be the shorty I've heard much about."
"Shorty?! For your information, I happen to be taller than you!" Edward folded his arms with a smirk. "So tough break, pipsqueak!"
"Hmm… come to think of it, you're a lot taller than I thought you were."
Edward's eyes sparkled. "Heheheh, yes… praise my height if you will!"
"Wait, how tall did you think he was?" Winry wondered.
"Well, I heard there was a short man with blonde hair and a mechanical arm and leg… but I just assumed he was smaller than a flea."
"A FLEA?!" Edward screeched as color drained from his body.
"Ouch…" Pacifica grimaced.
"How much of his ego is gonna take it?" Koakuma whispered.
"He had one?" Patchouli whispered back as they walked into the shrine where they saw Sanae waving them over.
"Hey! Welcome to the Moriya Shri-... oh, is he feeling okay?"
"He's been through worse. He'll be fine." Al said.
"Yeah, he's just being a baby. He'll be okay." Winry reassured.
"A baby… that's taller than a flea…"
Back at the camping spot…
"Wow!" Becky said as she was watching Star cooking up some creamy rabbit stew with mushrooms. "That's quite impressive!"
"Thank you!" Star giggled.
"I have a close friend who's also a good cook. His name's Emile. I think you and the others should try visiting his family restaurant and try out their food, or if you're interested, his family farm outside of the city."
"Ooooh, I'll keep that in mind." Star smiled. "Alright, you want to help serve?"
"Of course!" Becky nodded as they poured the stew in the dishes and gave it to everyone.
"Mmm, not bad!" Oran said.
"Wow!" Anya exclaimed.
"Oh wow, this is definitely a step up from fish." Lobster smiled.
"Extraordinary. It's incredible." Loid said.
"I'm gonna repeat what Oran said. It's not bad." Maki complimented.
"It's a bit too hot…" Cirno mumbled as she tried to blow on it. It was still a bit too warm for her so she decided to blow some ice on her spoon.
However, she got a little carried away as her ice breath managed to freeze the next bowl in front of her… which happened to be Magnolia's bowl.
"Mmmph!" Cirno froze in horror.
Magnolia stared at her now-ice cubed stew in front of her as Cirno looked up nervously, meeting Magnolia's fiery, unblinking glare.
"Oops! It was an accident!" Cirno squeaked.
Magnolia's lips curled into a smile that was anything but friendly—a slow, dangerous grin that sent a shiver down Cirno's spine. "Okay, ya ice-brained moron... How about we play a little game together~...?" The cape fox Faunus' voice was deceptively sweet, laced with venom. She stepped forward, cracking her knuckles menacingly. "I call it... "Does Cirno Bend That Way?"!"
Without even waiting for a reply, Cirno bolted as sheer terror propelled her legs. "YAAAAAAAAAAH!" She screamed, going as fast as she could, only for Magnolia to tackle the ice fairy to the ground as a fighting dust cloud ensued.
"I feel like that's a bit overkill for an accident." Tails sweatdropped.
"That's the thing… you ruin her food in front of her and she shows no mercy, accident or not." Laura sweatdropped with him.
"Are they normally like this?" Lobster sweatdropped as well.
"Yeesh, remind me to never get on Maggie's bad side…" Sunny shuddered.
"You've got quite the friend there, you two." Loid said, absolutely bewildered by the sight while Anya and Oran could only nod in agreement.
"Uncle! UNCLE! I'M SORRY!" Cirno wailed while rapidly tapping on Magnolia's arm, anime tears rolling down her cheeks.
"What are you sorry for~?" Magnolia asked, still keeping a tight headlock on her and grinning savagely but also making sure her grip wasn't too tight.
"I'M SORRY FOR BEING RECKLESS AND FREEZING YOUR FOOD EVEN IF IT WAS ACCIDENT! PLEASE LET ME GO!"
Magnolia released Cirno, smirking. "Okay, all is forgiven~"
"Hah... hah..."
Sunny gently nudged Nick. "I have to admit... your twin sister's scary."
"Maggs? You should see our mom. She's a lot worse than her." He shuddered. "Not helping that she kinda also got her fiery temper from her even before dad left us."
"Even before your dad left you?" Luna asked in confusion.
Nick sighed. "Long story..."
Luna noticed his discomfort at that subject. "I'm not even gonna ask..."
Back with Ford and Co…
Ford walked away from the shrine, giving the Moriya trio a wave before turning back to his journal and scribbling things down.
"No offense, Nitori… but that was a bit exhausting."
"I don't blame you. Kanako's just got that massive energy that exhausts anyone." Nitori said.
"She was responsible for a few incidents… yet all she saw was profit." Patchouli said.
"Reminds me of my brother… except she's a lot worse somehow. I will admit, Suwako's a lot more cunning than she looks-"
"That's ONE way of putting it…" Edward grumbled.
"Sanae is the most normal of the bunch, a bit straightforward, idealistic and naive, but charming nonetheless."
"Yeah, she's rather friendly, though often gets into friendly competitions with Reimu." Patchouli said. "...Now then, I know you've been to a few human settlements, but you've never been to the Human Village, correct?"
"I can't say I have. Once you visit one human settlement here, you've seen 'em all in Gensokyo, in my opinion." Ford said.
Patchouli chuckled. "I don't blame you. But this one's different compared to the rest."
"Where is it?"
"At the base of Youkai Mountain. Come on!" Patchouli flew down as the others accompanied her.
Once there…
"Whoa!" Pacifica said in surprise as they walked in.
"Took the word right out of my mouth. I didn't realize how big and populous it was." Ford said.
"A lot of humans gather here… and well, compared to the other settlements, these folks here fight for their own survival." Patchouli explained. "Granted, the other settlements do too, but these folks don't just grow vegetables or sneak to the rivers… these folks tend to fight back in case a Youkai is particularly hungry."
"Self-defense… I like it." Ford mused.
"These humans are a rather tenacious bunch." An unfamiliar voice chimed in as they would see Keine approach them. "It's quite admirable."
"Pardon my rudeness, but… you are…?"
"Keine Kamishirasawa, the guardian of the Human Village and a history teacher."
Keine Kami what now? That's such a mouthful… Edward deadpanned.
"I'm also sort of a Youkai myself, but let's not get into that." She chuckled. "You must be the author of the Journals. My class loves to read such fascinating tales."
Ford smiled. "I see they're into all sorts of beasts?"
"Indeed. I think we should be thankful that this Bill Cipher is no longer an issue, though I do have to wonder what it would be like if Yukari fought him. It might be a spectacle to see."
I don't know if SHE could handle him. Then again, Yukari's a mysterious one. Ford thought to himself.
"So, would you like the grand tour of the Human Village? You must be curious!"
"Indeed. It will also help with my research."
"Oh, excellent! I look forward to your research notes regarding this village. Plus, you can study me if you want… I wouldn't mind."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. Now come on!" Keine wandered off as the group followed.
"What did she mean by "sort of a Youkai"?" Winry whispered.
"I don't think we wanna know…" Alphonse whispered back.
"By the way, Ford… what exactly is your brother up to?" Nitori asked.
"Ah, well, he's in Vale with a new friend he's made." Ford responded.
Meanwhile, at Castor's Steak & Pasta…
"I gotta say, I love how when, even as a young boy, you were set on getting cash no matter what." Stan smirked.
"What can I say… the business was boomin' back then, so I went ahead and grasped it."
"You even went and got yourself a partner-in-crime. It's too bad she's not here celebratin' this occasion."
"Ah, she's busy with her boyfriend. Can't say I blame her, he's quite the looker if I say so myself. I approve of him."
"So what's the deal with her anyway, Torchwick? Was she always mute?"
"She has. Her parents were not the… brightest individuals around. Went by Trivia back in the day and her imaginary friend was Neo. Long story short, Trivia "died" and Neo "took her place". Then I found her in the streets and well, here we are."
"So you're like a father to her."
"If that's how you wanna look at it." Roman chuckled. "Of course, nowadays, Neo sees Bowser as an uncle… and well, the other day, I overheard him talking to himself mentioning Neo as a surrogate niece."
"That's adorable."
"Isn't it?" Roman chuckled. "By the way, you swindled anyone recently?"
"Just between you and me… I saw this dame tossing a pearl in the fountain in Toad Town, saying something about "good luck to her grandson on his math test" or something. When no one was looking, I snagged it and wondered what the big deal was on math. No one ever bothers using it and it's a useless subject anyway."
"So you kept it?"
"No, I just sold it to the nearest pawn shop and got a boat load of cash."
"Atta boy!" Roman chuckled. "As for me, I did a quick heist… managed to snag this beauty." He pulled out a ring with a sapphire in it.
"Ooooh!" Stan's eyes sparkled. "I'll pay ya a hundred bucks for it."
"Not so fast, Stanny… I'm gonna save this for a special occasion." Roman chuckled, putting it away and then pulled out a small diamond. "Here. This one's not as pretty."
"Oooh!" Stan took it. "So, you found a girl of your dreams and gonna propose?"
"I'm not really into the dating scene." Roman shook his head. "But, perhaps someone else is… you never know~"
Back in Gensokyo…
Ford finished up his notes. "Thank you for your time, Miss Kamishirasawa."
"Likewise, Mr. Pines." Keine smiled. "Oh, might I interest you in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost? It might prove to be good research."
"Ah, is that where Eientei is at? I've been curious about that one."
"We'll show you." Patchouli said as they walked away while waving goodbye to Keine.
"Bamboo Forest of the Lost? That… that sounds promising." Edward grimaced. "How do we know where to look?"
"I'm sure we'll be okay." Pacifica said. I hope.
A few minutes later…
BGM: Beautiful Nature Sight (Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody)
"Agh, I swear I've seen that bamboo stalk before." Edward grumbled.
"Are we going around in circles?" Al wondered.
"I think we're going straight…" Pacifica scratched her head.
"We have to be vigilant. It seems as if she's out and about." Patchouli said.
"Well…" Ford scribbled down on his journal. "At least things aren't too horrific. Maybe we'll-"
Ford put his foot down, where a rope trap wrapped around his ankle and yanked him high into the air. "AAAAAAH!"
"Ford!" Pacifica exclaimed.
"Hang on, I got ya!" Nitori flew over as they heard giggling, where Tewi approached them.
"Oh man, I didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to fall for that one!" Tewi laughed. "That was too good!"
"Oh… hey there, Tewi…" Patchouli deadpanned. "I see you're up to your tricks again."
Tewi smirked. "I bagged a human man. It's a good day~!" She said as Nitori released him and flipped him over.
"Thank you. I've heard about a prankster making life a little interesting around here." Ford said. "You must be the prankster in question."
"Yup~! I'm Tewi Inaba, and frankly, I'd rather have a fresh target considering my last one…" She shuddered. "She's… definitely something."
She shook it off. "But never mind that. I get to have fun with you~! Just try to make your way into Eientei~!" She took off.
"Ah, a challenge." Ford chuckled.
"I'd be careful… her challenging folks tend to end in disaster." Koakuma warned.
"We just gotta be vigilant, right? Then let's see how we can handle her pranks."
A few pranks later…
"KYAH!" Pacifica dropped into a pit fall along with Ford and Al.
"Bwahahaha! Oh man, are you guys even trying?! You gotta be the most hilarious-"
The ground underneath her rumbled.
"...Uh… what…?"
Suddenly, a rock hand came out and grabbed Tewi. "Hnnngh!" She grunted as Pacifica climbed out and glared at her.
"I've had enough of your stupid games. Show us where Eientei is!"
"And what if I don't?"
Pacfica raised her gauntlet. "Or else I'll make that rock hand-"
Tewi paled. "Okay, okay! I'll show you!" She whimpered as Pacifica dropped it, causing the rock hand to disappear. "I-It's this way." She walked off with the others following her.
"Were you really going to crush her?" Ed whispered.
"No, I'm not that cruel. I was just gonna have it tug her rabbit ear until she complied." Pacifica whispered back.
"Harsh. I like it."
Tewi then showed them Eientei. "You can look at it, but there's no way that-"
"Hey, look. Your old target is behind you."
"EEEK!" Tewi screamed as she turned around and instinctively clutched her backside. "PLEASE DON'T SWAT ME, ENID! I WAS JUST PLAYING WITH MY NEW FRIE-" She blinked, realizing Enid wasn't there. She turned around to see Ford and co halfway there as Pacifica turned her head to look at Tewi and playfully stuck her tongue out at her.
"Mmmph…" Tewi folded her arms in annoyance. "Well played, blondie…"
Up ahead, the group would see Kaguya and Mokou arm wrestling each other… until Mokou slammed her wrist on the table.
"Ha! Another point for me."
"Aww…" Kaguya frowned as she moved her fingers. "Thought for sure I had you that time." She said as Reisen added a mark for Mokou.
Mokou - 700
Kaguya - 680
"They seem to be getting along better." Nitori said.
"How so?" Ford wondered.
"Their relationship was a lot more volatile. Now they seem to have buried the hatchet." Nitori said. "I think Eirin has more info on that."
"Ah, I've been curious about this nurse myself." Ford mused as they walked further.

Back at the campsite…
"These are some really cool Semblances you have!" Sunny said.
"I dunno… I feel like Maki's Semblance is a little horrific…" Cirno shuddered.
"It's not so bad." Maki responded.
"So what's Laura's? I don't think she ever mentioned hers yet." Star said, playfully scratching Logue's Chao on the head.
"Mine is Ecto-Vision, or basically Aura Sense. I can perceive and read auras that have normally invisible fields of energy that surround every living thing. I can see my target's emotions, health status, power level, or moral alignment based on the appearance of their auras. I explained this to Sonia-sensei and she mentioned it sounds similar to a moral alignment thing in her world. Something about Lawful, Neutral and Chaotic. She also broke it down as Good, Neutral and Evil."
"So you can figure out who's good and who's a bad egg?" Rumia wondered.
"Yeah, I just gotta get a good read on them… although there could probably be a time where folks hide their true colors and I wouldn't be able to detect where they stand. That's a fear I have anyway."
"Interesting!" Sunny said. "Anything else about it? Any other cool abilities?"
"Well… I learned my Semblance gained a secondary ability sometime after Eggman invaded Remnant." Laura smiled as she brought her hands together, forming a triangle with her index fingers and thumbs, aiming directly at Sunny.
"Uh, Laura… what are you-...?"
"Aura Transfer!"
In a split second, her own consciousness left her body and flew directly toward Sunny. Sunny's eyes went blank as Laura's body fell on her knees, her eyes fading.
"What… just happened?" Tails wondered.
Suddenly, Sunny smiled. "I can transfer my aura into another person's body. I… discovered this by complete accident. You don't wanna know. But anyway, my body over there is "lifeless" for a little bit and needs to be protected, otherwise if my body gets hurt, then I get hurt as well."
"So, it's kinda like a… mind transfer Semblance?" Lobster wondered.
"Kinda!" Sunny nodded. "I can pretty much control the body however I'd like." She said as she started to walk around on her own for a bit before she put her hands together, where Laura's eyes regained their color.
"And that's all there is to it." Laura smiled.
"Whoa… my head's all fuzzy…" Sunny mumbled, rubbing her head. "What happened?"
"You… probably don't wanna know." Star and Luna said in unison.
Loid rubbed his chin in thought. "I see... a sensory-type Semblance with Aura reading and short-term soul transfer capabilities." He smiled. "That's one impressive Semblance you have there, Laura. With just enough practice, your Ecto-Vision could potentially make you a formidable ally for infiltration and espionage-based missions."
"Aww, thanks!" Laura giggled.
Back with the group…
"Informative…" Ford said as he walked back with the others. "Sad, but informative."
"Tell me about it. Both of them are immortal because of different circumstances but… it's sad on Mokou's part." Winry said.
"Eh… who would want to live forever?" Edward wondered. "Outliving all of your friends and family until you're alone forever? No thank you."
"It's not worth it." Pacifica said.
"Indeed." Patchouli nodded. "I've warned Himiko that becoming a Youkai isn't for the faint of heart, but I think she's set on it anyway. Not that I blame her…"
"So… where to next?" Ford asked.
"Heeeeeey!" A voice called out as Marisa came flying over. "Yo!"
"Hello there, Marisa." Ford greeted.
"Doing another round of research?"
"Tying up some loose ends, yes."
"Ah! Okay." Marisa nodded as an idea came to her. "Oh, I know a spot. You ever been up to Heaven?"
"Heaven? I'm not one for religion, but-"
"You don't have to die, trust me." Marisa reassured him. "Besides, I'm sure you'd love it there. It's beautiful!"
"Yeah, but Tenshi-"
"Tenshi Schmenshi. She's all bark and no bite." Marisa interrupted Patchouli. "Besides, riling her up is fun sometimes~"
"Okay, lead the way." Ford said. …While exercising caution.
"You got it~!" Marisa smiled.
Once there…
"Wow! This place is extraordinary!" Edward said. "It's so beautiful, so calm, so serene, a boulder is headed our way, so peacefu-... Uh oh!"
Everyone quickly ducked as the boulder slammed into the ground.
"I don't know what you're doing here, but you guys are an enemy of Heaven! How dare you trespass here! Leave now or I will destroy you all!" Tenshi declared.
"Oh, hey there, blueberry. Nice acting, you gonna take up an acting class or is that the best you got?" Marisa taunted.
"It is not an act, Marisa… I will assure you-" She pointed her sword at them. "That I mean business! Haaaah!" She swung her sword down as meteors rained from above.
"Aaaack!" The Elric brothers, Winry and Pacifica hugged each other tightly.
"Don't move. Just stand still." Marisa said.
"What do you mean "Don't move"?!" Ford wondered as the meteors slammed down around them.
"'Cause she's a terrible shot." Marisa said casually as more meteors rained down.
"...Wait… is this just for intimidation?" Ford wondered.
"Rrrgh, just hold still!" Tenshi growled as more meteors rained down but didn't end up hitting any of them.
"...Oh."
"Agh! I give up…" Tenshi sighed in annoyance. "But you are an enemy of Heaven, so I don't know why you're here."
"I'm here to study this part of Gensokyo." Ford explained.
"Oh, so you're that boring ol' geezer that Iku and Shion were talking about… I think, I barely pay attention the moment I hear "study"." Tenshi rolled her eyes. "But I'm not going to allow you to just… wander around all willy nilly."
"Let me guess, the grounds are still tainted after that Ztar incident?" Marisa smirked.
"No! That's far from it… and besides, I wasn't myself that day. I'm still upset that Yuuka beat me to a pulp when I was back to my sens-... Oh, never mind that!"
Tenshi shook her head. "I suppose I could let you explore the area… if you can best me in a challenge."
"What's the challenge? Spank you into oblivion?" Marisa taunted.
"No. Impress me in a fight. It doesn't matter if you beat me or not, I just want to know what you're capable of. So, old timer… you up for a fight?"
"I'm not much of a fighter." Ford admitted.
"I'll do it." Pacifica stepped forward. "I'll face you in battle."
Tenshi blinked. "Wait… you…?"
"Yes."
"Oh… um…" Tenshi rubbed her arm awkwardly. "I don't feel comfortable taking on a kid-"
"I'm an alchemist. I can handle it." Pacifica said. Don't get too cocky… She reminded herself.
"Mmm… you seem like a beginner though. I'm not sure if… ah!" Tenshi pounded her fist into her palm. "Okay, how about this. You can have up to two people accompanying you in this fight!"
"Well, in that case, I'll have Ed and Nitori accompany me!"
"The kappa and the shorty?" Tenshi tilted her head. "Actually, wait, you're shorter than he is… buuuut you might actually grow taller than him-"
"Oi! Enough with that bullcrap!" Edward growled, activated the blade in his metal arm. "We doing this or what?!"
Tenshi stabbed the ground as keystones rose up and levitated behind her.
"Don't say I didn't warn you." She said as Pacifica, Nitori and Ed got ready to fight.

Childishly Bratty - Tenshi
"Show me what you can do!" Tenshi declared, proceeding to throw the keystones at Pacifica who swiftly clapped her hands and planted them on the ground as a rock wall rose up to block the attack, then she put her hand on Ed's metal arm and closed her eyes, adding some flair to it.
"Oh? …Oho!" Edward smirked as he vaulted over the wall and then his arm turned into an arm cannon and fired plasma shots at her, striking Tenshi in the chest. "Haha! So THIS is how Samus feels!"
"You're not as athletic as she is though!" Winry called out as Ed rolled his eyes as he continued to fire as Tenshi slashed through the plasma shots, unaware of Nitori conjuring up water and shooting it toward Tenshi, as Pacifica hovered her hands over the torrent of water as it turned into ice, then changed it into an ice fist and punched Tenshi away.
"Nnnngh!" Tenshi grunted, shaking it off. This alchemist means business! I gotta focus on her, otherwise I'm gonna get creamed…
She stabbed the ground as a pillar rose up from beneath her as a pillar shot up from underneath Pacifica, knocking her into the sky.
"Paz!" Nitori flew after her as Tenshi fired a laser at Pacifica, but Nitori quickly put up a water barrier as she grabbed Pacifica with her other hand. She recovered and shook her head, then she used her alchemy to make the water wall ice and then proceeded to fire a flurry of icicles at her.
Tenshi flew away, slashing through the icicles and vaulting over the ice wall and threw a keystone down at Nitori, sending them crashing into the ground as Tenshin flew down, adding power to her sword as she swung down and unleashed a flurry of danmaku at the duo, only for her to get struck by a missile courtesy of Ed.
"Ho ho! I'm glad you came up with missiles in this thing!" Edward smirked and fired as Tenshi turned around and swung at Edward, who quickly blocked with his metal arm, where he activated the blade and proceeded to swipe at Tenshi, who swiftly parried him and in one swift movement, she powered up her sword and slashed through the metal arm, cutting it clean in half.
"What the-?!" Edward exclaimed in surprise as Tenshi kicked him down. She then turned around to face Nitori and Pacifica who looked at each other and with a determined nod, Nitori wrapped Pacifica in a stream of water and launched her.
Tenshi smirked and threw a Keystone at her, but Pacifica moved out of the way as Tenshi's eyes widened as she braced for impact, but she didn't feel a sharp thud hitting her body. She turned around to see Pacifica already with Ed and using her alchemy to repair his metal arm. She would then turn to face Nitori… only to get a grenade launcher to the face as she was knocked away.
"Gotcha!" Nitori smirked as Ed got back up once it was fully repaired.
"Thanks, Paz!" Ed smiled as he ran off as both he and Nitori charged straight for Tenshi, who quickly hopped onto a Keystone and then slammed into the ground, creating an explosion made entirely out of swords that sent Ed and Nitori flying back as even Pacifica got grazed by a few blades.
With a wince, she put her hands on the ground… only for Tenshi to put her foot on top of her hand. "That's enough out of you." Tenshi said, kicking her to the ground and pointed her sword at Pacifica, daring her to try another move.
Pacifica gulped as she only raised her hands up in defeat.

"Heh." Tenshi smirked. "I have to say, you put up more of a fight than I thought you would. Using your alchemy to change the elements for Nitori was genius and turning the shorty's metal arm into a cannon? Awesome! Though… perhaps you could make him bigger?"
"We tried that once during my training. He shrunk."
Tenshi grimaced. "Oh, so that's a no go then? Guess he's a runt forever."
"Uuungh… if I wasn't knocked out, I'd be clobbering you for that…" Edward groaned.
"Well, you guys definitely impressed me, so feel free to go around and study the whole place as you wish. Just count me out because it's so boring."
"I know a way to entertain you, blue head."
"You want a go, Kirisame?! I'll gladly take that challenge!" Tenshi snarled as everyone else slipped away while the two proceeded to go at it.
"Are they normally like this?" Ford asked.
"She just likes to get a rise out of her." Patchouli waved it off.
"I see…"
Later, once all the research was done…
"That takes care of it." Ford put his journal away. "Now there's one last thing to take care of. The Palace of the Earth Spirits."
"Did you say Palace of the Earth Spirits?" Marisa walked over, a few bruises all over her while Tenshi was sitting on a keystone battered and bruised as well. "I can show you the way there."
"You sure you can handle yourself in that state?" Patchouli asked.
"I've been through worse. Come on, let's go!"
The others looked at each other and shrugged, then followed Marisa.
Back at the campsite…
Albedo came out of the water, having gone for a swim. "Whew, that was fun…" He said, brushing back his hair. He opened his eyes to see the fairies, Lily White and Eternity Larva being one of them, going heart eyed over him and proceeded to crowd around him. "Hehehe~ I see not even the ladies of Gensokyo are immune to my charms~"
"Oh, no… not again…" Magnolia groaned in dismay.
"...What…? Huh?" Maki blinked. "When did-...? Becky, is THIS what you were talking about?"
"Yup." Becky nodded.
"Great, so not even the fairies are immune to his charms…" Magnolia groaned.
Blanche sighed. "Ever the ladies man…"
Lobster blinked, tilting her head. "I don't get it…"
"It's probably for the best that you don't." Oran said with Anya nodding.
"Huh… okay…?" Tails scratched his head before shrugging.
Back with Ford and co…
"And here we are." Marisa said as they walked into the palace. "The Palace of the Earth Spirits!"
"It's… kinda creepy." Winry grimaced.
"Right?" Pacifica agreed.
"Brrr! I feel like someone's breathing down my neck…" Edward shuddered. "Al, is that you?"
"No, I'm right here."
"Well, SOMEONE'S poking my neck!" Edward growled as he turned around, but saw no one.
"Must be your imagination." Ford said.
"I swear it wasn't…" Ed grumbled as they continued walking until Edward felt the presence again. "Agh! Alright! Who's behind me!" Edward turned around but no one was there. "Rrrrgh… it's not fun-"
He turned around, only to see Koishi directly in front of him.
"Boo!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Edward screamed as he fell on his back, pale as a ghost.

Koishi let out a giggle. "That never gets old~" She then spotted Marisa. "Hey, Marisa!"
"Yo, Koishi! How's the new ring treatin' ya?"
Ring? Everyone but Patchouli and Koakuma thought.
"I see my sister is pranking you all."
They turned to see Satori approaching them with an amused smile on her face, accompanied by a Magnamalo.
"O-Oh… that's… a Magnamalo…" Ford grimaced.
The Magnamalo let out a growl.
"Easy, Genma… I can tell that they mean no harm." Satori reassured, making the Magnamalo ease up. "You must be Ford."
"I can't say I've seen you before."
"I've never been to the Mystery Zone personally… but I've read your journals after Rin and Utsuho went there." Satori explained. "In case if you're wondering, Koishi and I are Satori, beings who can read minds."
"Oh? I think I've heard of something like that."
"Well, one of us at least… for a time, Koishi closed her Third Eye."

BGM: Scent of Silence (Kingdom Hearts: Re:Chain of Memories)
"What was the reasoning for that?" Ford wondered.
Koishi sighed. "For a time… I was afraid of what people were thinking of me and I got… overwhelmed by my fears that I just… couldn't bear it so I decided to close my Third Eye. What I didn't know was, because of that, I would become a ghost to everyone."
"Well, you certainly are one given what ya just did to me!" Ed said.
"Shhh!" Al shushed him.
"Hmph…" Ed folded his arms.
"I would become… nonexistent to those around me. The moment you took your eyes off of me, your memory of me would be instantly erased. Only Satori and her pets could remember me… but I didn't seem to mind that much. Of course, there was that whole thing stealing a mask from that mask lady, but… let's not get into that. I honestly thought this was perfect… just living my life as a non-existent Youkai."
A soft smile formed on her lips. "Of course, that all changed when I visited the Scarlet Devil Mansion one day. I was able to sneak past that gate guard due to my closed Third Eye at the time. I explored the interior before going down a flight of stairs leading towards the basement… little did I realize I would stumble upon the girl who set my life back on track. Flan."
"Flan put you back on course?" Nitori asked in surprise.
"Yeah! Though… I did mistake her for a princess. She just seemed like royalty to me. Regardless, we hit it off and long story short, Flan got Patchy and Koakuma to make a ring for me that lets me be able to… well, not become a non-existent ghost anymore."
"I recall the first meeting happening before the Ztar incident and the Universal Reset. Which, by the way, the heroes who gathered the Ztars all over Gensokyo? They missed a spot." Satori said. "One Ztar was undetected and it was right in Utsuho's domain. Honestly, I'm glad the Universal Reset restored the Ztar into a regular Power Star again because… Utsuho was acting really unstable with it. I was worried she was about to blow up Gensokyo… but the reset happens and she's back to normal."
"I thought I felt a twinge of uneasiness…" Patchouli said. "Still, I had no idea we missed one. I thought we covered all of our bases."
"Apparently not…" Satori shook her head.
"Flan became my first ever friend… and I'm thankful she did what she did."
"So Flandre was able to do all of this?" Ford wondered. "What did she do?"
"Well, it's a long story." Koishi winked. "But for now, I'll just say that Flan gave me this ring because she wanted to help me back as her way of "returning the favor" to me."
"Returning the favor?"
Koishi smiled fondly. "Me being her first-ever friend and vice versa."
End BGM
"Well… I suppose now would be a good time to show you around the place." Satori said. "Come on, we'll show you around."
Everyone followed the Komeiji sisters, all the while Nitori and Pacifica hung back.
"So, how's Dipper~?" Nitori teased.
"Dipper? As far as I know, he's doing rather well. I didn't go to Paldea, so I'm assuming he's doing well." Pacifica blushed. "You… happen to be interested in someone?"
"Well… I do have a crush on this one boy. He's just so… cute."
"Oh? What's his name?"
"Nagisa."
"Nagi? Huh! Not a bad choice, all things considered."
"Right? He's just so… headstrong and focused. Agh… I just wanted to hug him after he was so down in the dumps when SAPR was down and out! I wish I did…"
"Well, hey, maybe you can give him a hug when he gets back! I bet he'll be happy, especially since SAPR's up and running again."
"True! And honestly, I can look beyond his past… like, yeah, what he did was awful, but… he's made up for it in strides. I can't help but find that admirable."
Nitori giggled. "But enough about Nagi, what do you like about Dipper?"
"Oh, I just like how he's so… courageous and nothing slows him down. Sure, he can be a bit blunt at times, but… that doesn't stop me from… liking him, ya know?" Pacifica chuckled. "If it wasn't for him, I'd… never had thought of taking that first step in defying my parents and becoming an alchemist, let alone world-hopping."
Nitori smiled. "He's one of a kind."
"He sure is…" Pacifica sighed happily. "Oh Dipper… what am I gonna do with that lovable dork?"
A few days later…
BGM: It Began With a Letter (Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMix)
Ford sat down at the porch of the Hakurei Shrine, proceeding to write down in the journal while everyone else patiently waited while chatting with Reimu, Marisa and Suika.
(Note: Now is the time for another long journal entry. If you wish to skip, just scroll to the bottom.)
Gensokyo - Day 6
Entry Date - June 16th
After taking some time for myself, I thought it would be best if I went back in and finished the rest of Gensokyo in this journal before tackling the other oddities in other worlds. First, let's start off with a big one.
The Realm of Heaven — Theories, Observations, and Puzzling Inconsistencies
At first glance, Heaven seems to be a dimension apart from Gensokyo itself, but the more I study its structure, the more I suspect there are hidden connections between the two realms. Gensokyo, as I've observed, is a place where the boundaries between belief, magic, and reality are fluid, but Heaven—well, Heaven seems to operate on an entirely different level. It feels like it should be an otherworldly paradise of unimaginable power, governed by laws so far beyond my comprehension that it's maddening to even contemplate. But as I continue to research, I find myself questioning if the Celestials here are as divine as they claim—or if they're just an extremely advanced form of "power" misunderstood as divinity.
The fact that Heaven exists in a tangible, observable space within the boundaries of Gensokyo raises immediate questions. Is Heaven another dimension, like Gensokyo itself? Or is it a higher layer of the world that humans have simply elevated to the status of "divine"? Regardless, it's definitely a place with power beyond normal comprehension.
Celestials
The Celestials in Gensokyo—beings like Tenshi Hinanawi for example, though not all Celestials appear to be quite so... well, human—are described as "gods" or "divine beings" who are fundamentally different from the "youkai" of Gensokyo. But this is where things get tricky. Despite their lofty status, Celestials are often depicted as being flawed, impulsive, and, frankly, somewhat childish. Heaven doesn't seem to be the perfect paradise one might expect from beings of such immense power. In fact, much of their behavior suggests a striking similarity to highly advanced, but still very human-like, beings.
Tenshi Hinanawi – A Case Study in Celestial Contradictions
Tenshi is a Celestial who has, in many ways, baffled me with her behavior. The self-proclaimed "fallen angel" is far from the composed and noble figure I might have expected from a being living in a "paradise." She presents herself as a force to be reckoned with, possessing tremendous power over earth and sky, capable of summoning seismic upheavals and manipulating gravity in a localized area. Her abilities, while certainly impressive, appear to be the result of a combination of elemental manipulation and some form of physical enhancement. This could be studied further, but let's not forget: despite her considerable abilities, she's recklessly impulsive and often erratic. It's as if she's more like a spoiled child with a toy that can destroy entire mountains.
Behavioral Patterns
Immaturity and Impulsivity
Despite her immense power, Tenshi lacks the strategic thinking one might expect from a divine being. She seems to act on impulse, like a toddler throwing tantrums when things don't go her way. She constantly tries to challenge beings much more powerful than herself, and it's clear from her repeated failures that she vastly overestimates her own abilities. If there's one thing I've learned from dealing with Gensokyo's youkai, it's that power is only useful when wisely controlled.
I had an encounter with her that exemplified this perfectly. She tried to challenge me to a "fight" right off the bat, declaring herself the "mightiest" among the Celestials. I barely had to move to avoid her attacks, and after she nearly destroyed a large section of the landscape, she sulked off, insisting that she would return stronger next time. Predictable. Even if her attacks were potent, they lacked finesse or precision.
Note to self: If I ever need to avoid being crushed by a celestial tantrum, I'll stick with the "stand still and pretend I'm not here" strategy. It works surprisingly well.
Celestial Power – Divinity or Science?
While the Celestials clearly possess abilities far beyond the capabilities of most other creatures in Gensokyo, I'm unconvinced that they are actually divine. To be fair, this is not an argument grounded in religious ideology but one based purely on my scientific observations. They exhibit flaws. They can make mistakes. They get angry, moody, and occasionally foolish. The idea of "gods" in the traditional sense—beings whose power is absolute and beyond reproach—seems less likely here.
Perhaps the Celestials represent beings who are exceptionally powerful but not omnipotent, existing on a higher level of existence due to their connection to heavenly energies. Still, I wonder if they might be using some form of unknown physics or magical technology to achieve their seemingly divine feats. The power to manipulate gravity, time, and even memories should be understood through some scientific framework, no matter how outlandish it might seem.
Theological vs. Scientific Debate
The question I keep coming back to is this: Are the Celestials truly divine beings, or are they just extremely advanced youkai with an overinflated sense of self-worth? From a scientific standpoint, everything they do can be explained by a combination of high-level magical energy and advanced manipulation of natural forces. There's very little here that speaks to true divinity, at least in the sense of a higher, all-knowing power. My personal hypothesis: they're closer to elite youkai, but with interdimensional access and much better control over their specific elements.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Investigate Celestial Energy: The energy they use appears to be tied to an external source. Is it a form of celestial energy, or can it be replicated by other beings? There's a lot of potential here if I can learn to harness it.
Observe their Emotional States: While the Celestials might be more powerful than other creatures in Gensokyo, their erratic behavior makes them difficult to predict. A deeper psychological study could offer insights into their emotional volatility and possibly even explain why their powers are so untamed.
Monitor Tenshi's Destruction: Keep track of Tenshi's attempts to destroy large areas of Gensokyo. It's a bit of a disaster, but it also serves as an excellent case study in gravity manipulation and destructive magic. Just make sure to stay out of range.
Celestials—divine beings or just immensely powerful entities with a warped sense of self-importance? My current theory is that they are a mixture of the two, with considerable power rooted in a combination of advanced magical manipulation and a deep, inherited connection to some sort of divine power source. Still, their behavior makes me lean toward the "elite youkai" theory. Either way, I'm not ready to completely discard the possibility that they might be closer to mere mortals with overblown egos than true gods.
At the very least, they make for interesting study material, if one can avoid the collateral damage caused by their temper tantrums.
Tenshi Hinanawi – Celestial or Just Really Powerful?
Tenshi Hinanawi – A Heavenly Anomaly
Annoyance Level: Medium
Threat Level: Low (Mostly)
Tenshi Hinanawi is a Celestial being from Heaven who, according to her own declarations, has "fallen" from grace, though her behavior suggests she might never have truly understood grace to begin with. Despite claiming to be a mighty angel of Heaven, Tenshi has displayed such a confusing combination of immense power and complete recklessness that I cannot help but question whether she's truly as dangerous as her reputation suggests—or if she's just a high-powered nuisance with an inflated sense of self-importance.
I first encountered her in the Youkai Mountain area of Gensokyo, where she was wreaking havoc in a manner that was both awe-inspiring and rather childish. As far as Celestial beings go, she's definitely not what I would expect from a "divine" entity. In fact, if anything, she's more like an unstable force of nature than a god, which makes me wonder if there's more going on here than simple divine power.
Abilities and Powers
Earth Manipulation (Gravity-Based)
Tenshi's primary ability seems to revolve around her control over gravity and earth manipulation, primarily keystones. She can summon earthquakes, create local gravitational anomalies, and summon keystones of varying sizes or terrain shifts at will. Her control of gravity is fairly straightforward, allowing her to manipulate it with devastating effects on the surrounding landscape. In theory, she could use this ability to create local gravitational wells, crushing her foes beneath their own weight, or potentially crush an entire building with a single hand.
But here's the kicker: While she can unleash these massive, destructive bursts of power, she does so recklessly and without much strategic thought. Her attacks often come across more like blunt force trauma than calculated maneuvers. There's no finesse in her style—she can certainly destroy things, but her approach lacks the precision one might expect from a being with her apparent power.
Personal Note: The second time I saw her use this power, she caused an enormous crater in the ground. It was quite impressive, but the utter lack of control over her abilities made it seem like a tantrum rather than a calculated attack. Is she trying to impress someone? Or just blow off some steam?
The Sword of Hisuo & Her Swordplay (... or lack thereof)
Tenshi is also equipped with a sword, dubbed as the "Sword of Hisou", which I'm sure is meant to add to her "majestic warrior" image. Unlike the other Celestials, she seems to be the only one who can wield this sword as it is able to gather and accumulate the surrounding spirit and convert it into energy, being also able to control the accumulated spiritual energy and convert it into the spirit of the opponent's weakness, and attack using their weakness.
Unfortunately, her swordsmanship appears as chaotic as her magical abilities. It's almost as if she thinks sheer power will make up for a complete lack of discipline. She doesn't seem to have any true finesse with the weapon. Her attacks are more about overwhelming the opponent with sheer destructive force rather than precision strikes. In other words, she's the kind of fighter who throws everything at you at once, hoping that something sticks.
Note to self: Don't challenge her to a sword fight. You'll either get crushed by a meteor or be too distracted by her shouting about being the "strongest" to put up any real defense.
Behavioral Patterns
Overconfidence and Tantrums
One of the most consistent traits of Tenshi is her massive ego. She constantly proclaims herself to be the "strongest" Celestial, despite repeatedly failing to back up her claims. This overconfidence often leads to tantrums when things don't go her way, resulting in destructive displays of power that hurt her more than her opponent. There seems to be no middle ground with her: either she's boasting about her abilities or trying to demonstrate her superiority through force.
It's fascinating to observe, but it also means that interacting with her can quickly devolve into a frustrating experience. She never seems to be able to control her emotions, and this lack of emotional maturity often leads her to make reckless decisions. It's almost as if her power is tied to her temper—the angrier she gets, the more destructive her abilities become.
Lack of Strategic Thinking
Despite her formidable power, Tenshi lacks the kind of strategic thinking one would expect from a being with her status. Her approach to combat (and life, in general) is all about the immediate thrill rather than planning ahead or considering the long-term consequences. She charges in with brute force, hoping to intimidate or overwhelm her opponent, and seems completely unprepared for situations where that doesn't work.
Personal Note: One encounter with her involved me standing perfectly still while she attempted to obliterate me with a barrage of meteors and gravitational anomalies. Once I failed to respond in the manner she anticipated, she just… gave up? It wasn't a fight—she didn't know how to proceed, so she just walked off, claiming that I was too "boring" to deal with. Again, her lack of adaptability was more frustrating than dangerous.
Need for Validation
Tenshi seems to constantly seek validation for her strength. It's as if she feels the need to prove herself to everyone she meets, regardless of whether or not she needs to. This is not a trait commonly associated with beings of divine power, as one would expect such beings to be secure in their status. It's clear to me that she has a complex about being a "fallen angel," which has led to a constant need for external validation to affirm her superiority.
Personal Encounters
First Encounter
My first meeting with Tenshi was less of a meeting and more of a collision. She approached me and my companions with a declaration that I was an enemy of Heaven, which, I'm assuming, was meant to be intimidating. Before I could even respond, she began summoning keystones from the ground and launching them at me with tremendous force. The gravity distortions she created made it difficult to move without feeling like I was fighting against the atmosphere itself. However, I simply stepped aside to avoid the debris, and Tenshi's frustration reached new heights. She escalated her attacks, but as I did nothing but stand there—yes, literally just standing still—she soon grew bored and left, muttering something about me being "no fun."
However, when she set her eyes on Pacifica Northwest, she quickly changed her mind as she challenged her to a duel, with Nitori Kawashiro and Edward Elric by her side as she was allowed to pick out two people to assist her. Despite her usual arrogance and divine powers, I'm quite surprised that she at least had the decency to not go too rough on a kid by giving her a fair fighting chance. For the most part, I'm guessing that she held back in their fight and ended everything in a draw because she wanted to see for herself what Pacifica's capable of as an alchemist.
Conclusion: She's a force of nature, but a very predictable one. When her primary strategy fails, she has no backup plan. Dealing with her requires patience, and perhaps a dash of humor.
Marisa's Role
Marisa Kirisame, ever the opportunist, took great joy in provoking Tenshi further in the past. Their overall interactions usually involve a lot of shouting, rocks flying everywhere, and both of them somehow leaving the area without much resolved. Tenshi seems to think that Marisa is somehow her equal, even though Marisa is far more composed in battle. This has led to some of the more humorous skirmishes between the two.
The Celestial Peach Orchard
After Tenshi gave me her "divine permission" to study Heaven without much fuss after her duel with Pacifica, I was amazed by the huge amount of heavenly peach trees she had grown and nurtured by herself. She explained to me that Heaven doesn't get that much normal food other than sake and these heavenly peaches as they are considered a sacred commodity to the Celestials, being their favorite snack, a temporary booster for enhanced strength, and also one of the raw materials needed to create an immortality elixir.
Hmm… I do wonder if this was one of the ingredients needed to make that Hourai Elixir I've heard about in Eientei?
Eh, who knows.
Anyway, when some of my friends and I tried to pluck a single peach from the tree, Tenshi prevented us from doing so she told us that any mortal who dares to steal or eat a peach from her orchard is considered to be a sacrilegious offense to the Celestials.
I must admit, even if I'm not one for religion like Stanley, I am very much respectful and aware of the sacred boundaries that I am not supposed to cross.
Potential Threat Level: Low to Medium
While Tenshi is undeniably powerful and certainly capable of significant destruction, her lack of control and strategic thinking makes her more of a threat in an unplanned, chaotic environment than in a controlled confrontation. If she were to ever face someone who understood her emotional triggers, her overconfidence and impulsiveness would likely lead to her downfall.
However, given that she's in possession of the ability to reshape the landscape at will and cause gravitational shifts, I wouldn't completely dismiss her as harmless. In an uncontrolled situation, she could cause considerable damage. As long as one doesn't challenge her ego directly, the threat level remains manageable.
Final Recommendations:
Avoid Direct Confrontation: If possible, it's best to avoid engaging Tenshi in direct combat. Her ego and emotional volatility make her unpredictable, and any situation that escalates beyond a casual exchange could result in collateral damage.
Use Her Temper Against Her: Patience is key. If forced to deal with her, use her own impulsive nature to your advantage. Do not provoke her unnecessarily, and wait for her to exhaust herself.
Keep an Eye on Her Interactions with Others: Tenshi's ego-driven need for validation often leads her into conflict with others, particularly Marisa. While she may not be a world-threatening force, her behavior could create significant disturbances in the region. Observing these patterns could yield useful data for understanding the broader implications of Celestial behavior.
Tenshi Hinanawi is certainly an anomaly in the study of celestial beings. She possesses remarkable power, but lacks the grace and wisdom one might expect from a divinity. Her impulsive behavior, combined with her overwhelming need for validation, makes her more of a persistent nuisance than an actual threat. But as always in Gensokyo, underestimating anyone—especially a Celestial—could prove costly.
Still, in the grand scheme of things, Tenshi's greatest strength is her inability to learn from her mistakes, which is what makes her predictable.
The Human Village – An Inconvenient Yet Fascinating Outpost
The Human Village – A Collection of Mortals in a World of the Supernatural
The Human Village is one of the more perplexing settlements I've encountered in my studies of Gensokyo. Situated between the Mystic Forest and the Mistake Lake, this small but surprisingly persistent community of humans has somehow managed to carve out a semblance of normalcy in a world dominated by powerful youkai, magical creatures, and divine beings. The juxtaposition of human frailty and the constant threat of supernatural danger makes the Human Village a bizarre outpost of civilization in what should, by all rights, be a dangerous and chaotic wilderness.
It's an anomaly. The humans here live amidst incredible risk, yet they manage to carry on their daily lives in a way that is… almost normal. It defies what little I know about human survival instincts, especially in a place like Gensokyo, where youkai can be as deadly as they are plentiful. How have they managed to stay out of the youkai's clutches for so long? The answer, I suspect, is a combination of sheer willpower, stubbornness, and a certain amount of ignorance regarding the dangers that surround them.
The Humans of the Village
Survival Amidst Youkai
The human inhabitants of this village are not your typical weak, defenseless mortals. They've learned to survive in a world where the line between friend and foe is constantly blurred. Many of the villagers are skilled in various forms of defense and have developed unique methods for coexisting with youkai without attracting too much attention. Some work as craftspeople or merchants, providing goods that either cater to the youkai's needs or act as a shield against their often unpredictable behavior.
But the most curious thing about the human population is their resilience. Rather than fleeing from the ever-present danger of youkai attacks or the strange phenomena that pervade Gensokyo, they have instead opted for a more... pragmatic approach: build walls, strengthen their defenses, and band together for mutual protection. It's not unlike the way early humans might have faced off against the wild beasts of the natural world, but with the added complexity of magical creatures and deities in the mix.
I must admit… I find the human drive for survival in Gensokyo somewhat admirable. They've managed to make do in a world full of inexplicable and often dangerous forces. It's no wonder some of them are so stubbornly pragmatic.
Fear of Youkai and Supernatural Forces
The villagers live with an overwhelming fear of the youkai who roam the region, especially the more malevolent ones. However, despite the palpable tension, it seems the village has struck a delicate balance with them. Most youkai who wander into the village are either traded with or tolerated—but never fully trusted. For instance, certain youkai act as patrons or business partners, providing protection or services in exchange for food or other goods. There are even those who go out of their way to befriend youkai, though I would advise against placing too much trust in that practice. Youkai, after all, are not bound by the same moral code as humans.
Note to self: The concept of "coexisting" with youkai is one I still find troubling. There are certain creatures in Gensokyo, like the Tengu, that could easily wipe out the Human Village if they chose to, yet they appear to follow an unspoken agreement not to do so. I can't help but wonder if there's more to this "coexistence" than meets the eye, or if it's simply a game of mutual deterrence.
The Village Square
A key landmark, the center of human activity in the village revolves around the village square, which is typically filled with merchants, farmers, and even some youkai hawking their wares. The presence of youkai merchants in particular is curious: some are strictly for-profit, while others seem to provide a form of "protection" for the villagers. The most notable example of this is the kappa, who are known for their technological ingenuity. Though their antics can be rather frustrating at times, I suspect the villagers tolerate them because their knowledge of water engineering and construction is invaluable.
The fact that the youkai community can so seamlessly blend in with the human population is fascinating. While there are definitely tensions between the two, it seems there's an underlying recognition that both sides benefit from cooperation—at least for now.
Culture and Society
Festivals and Celebrations
Humans in Gensokyo, despite the constant threats, still manage to celebrate their lives in their own ways. Festivals are an important aspect of their cultural identity. There are numerous occasions where the boundaries between human and youkai break down, and there's a sense of unity—even if it's just temporary. These events often include the usual rituals and games, but there's always an undercurrent of caution, as both sides remain wary of what the other might do if the situation escalates.
The Hinamatsuri festival, for instance, is celebrated with both human and youkai participation, despite the cultural differences. It's a rare moment where it feels like the tenuous balance between the two groups is temporarily forgotten in favor of shared celebration. I suspect these festivals serve to remind the human population that life in Gensokyo, while constantly under threat, is still worth living.
I've considered visiting the village during one of these festivals, but given my reputation (and my tendency to poke around in places I probably shouldn't), I think it might be best if I observe from a distance.
The Role of Youkai in Village Life
Youkai Toleration vs. Youkai Coercion
While the villagers seem to have a begrudging tolerance for youkai, it is still clear that they view youkai with a mixture of fear, suspicion, and reverence. Certain youkai, like the Tengu and Kappa, have negotiated peace deals and are allowed to trade or work within the village.
There's an interesting dynamic here—coercion by youkai may be in the background, but it's masked by the outward form of mutual cooperation.
One particularly puzzling detail involves the youkai-hunting profession. Certain human warriors or mages, though outnumbered and often seen as "outsiders," act as youkai hunters, policing the outskirts of the village and maintaining some semblance of order when things get out of hand. While these individuals are undoubtedly skilled, I have to question how long they can continue to hold back the floodgates before the youkai become too numerous and powerful.
The Human Village is a peculiar mix of human ingenuity, perseverance, and naivety in a world where those very qualities could easily be their undoing. The villagers have learned to coexist with the dangers of Gensokyo, carving out a life for themselves in spite of the supernatural forces that threaten to overwhelm them. However, the question remains: for how long can this fragile balance between humans and youkai be maintained? One thing is certain: the village is a valuable case study in survival in extreme conditions, but I wonder if it can last in the long term without tipping into chaos.
Recommendations for Further Study:
The Psychological Impact of Youkai Coexistence: It would be worth examining how constant exposure to powerful, unpredictable beings has shaped human psychology in the village. Is there an underlying culture of fear masked by stoicism, or do the villagers genuinely believe that they can co-exist with the youkai long-term?
Youkai Influence and Coercion: I should focus on understanding the subtle power dynamics between the youkai merchants, the village authorities, and the more neutral youkai factions who live alongside the humans. Are there hidden layers of coercion I've missed?
Study of Religious and Cultural Practices: A deeper dive into the rituals of the village, especially their religious ceremonies, may reveal more about how humans in Gensokyo cope with the dangers of their world. How do their spiritual beliefs tie into their survival?
Keine Kamishirasawa – Teacher, Guardian, and Enigma
Keine Kamishirasawa – Human Village Guardian, History Teacher, and Youkai (Sort Of)
Threat Level: Low
Influence Level: Moderate
Keine Kamishirasawa is a fascinating and somewhat perplexing figure within Gensokyo. She occupies a dual role within the Human Village: she is both the guardian of the village and a history teacher, but her identity is more complex than it first appears. While she presents herself as a human, she harbors a secret—she is also a youkai, though one with an unusual connection to both human and youkai cultures.
The Guardian of the Human Village role is particularly noteworthy. Keine acts as a protector of the village, particularly when it comes to the defense against youkai attacks. But her unique abilities also allow her to transcend the ordinary boundaries of youkai and human relations, making her something of an enigma. Additionally, her position as the history teacher is significant. She is dedicated to passing down human knowledge and history, but given her own mysterious past and abilities, one has to wonder if she's imparting the whole truth. Is she teaching the real history of the village—or perhaps something more selective?
Abilities and Powers
History Manipulation (Temporal Alteration)
One of Keine's most distinctive abilities is her power to manipulate history. This manifests primarily as her ability to alter the memories of people and rearrange historical events within the boundaries of her direct influence. Specifically, Keine can use her abilities to erase memories of certain events and even rewrite the histories of individuals—so long as they are within her immediate domain. It's unclear how deep this power runs, but it seems that it's most effective when dealing with short-term alterations rather than massive, long-standing changes to history.
Her ability to alter history is most often linked to her youkai form, which emerges under the influence of the full moon. While she is otherwise a human teacher and guardian, under the full moon, Keine transforms into a powerful youkai, gaining heightened strength and abilities, though still maintaining her primary power to alter memories and the past.
Personal Notes: I've had several interesting discussions with Keine on the nature of history and memory. I can't help but wonder if she uses her abilities to control the narrative around certain events or if she's simply trying to protect the village from the dangerous truths of Gensokyo's history. Either way, her skills in altering perception have far-reaching implications. Perhaps I'll need to gather more data on how she balances this with her duties as a teacher.
Transformation (Full Moon Form)
Under the light of the full moon, Keine transforms into a youkai—a kemono no youkai (a kind of animal spirit). This form is a marked departure from her human appearance and grants her enhanced strength, speed, and a beastly ferocity. In this state, she becomes a guardian in the truest sense, capable of defending the village from the most dangerous of threats. She becomes a large, powerful creature with tusks, claws, and a generally intimidating presence.
This duality—the shift from a mild-mannered human to a fearsome youkai—makes her one of the more unpredictable figures in Gensokyo. Her willingness to take on the form of a youkai to protect her charges suggests a deep connection to both human and youkai worlds, though I suspect it might also reflect a conflict within herself. Does she truly identify with either group?
Note to self: I've seen Keine in both forms. Her youkai form is immense and powerful. I can't help but feel that there's more to her duality than meets the eye. I wonder how her human colleagues view her when she takes that form. Is she seen as a protector, or something more terrifying?
Behavioral Patterns and Personality
Teacher and Caretaker
As a teacher, Keine is highly dedicated to the education of the human children in the village. Her role as an educator is deeply important to her, and she strives to ensure that the next generation understands the historical context of their world—particularly the relationship between humans and youkai. She teaches that humans should be vigilant and learn to protect themselves, but she also seems intent on teaching a balanced view of youkai—not all youkai are inherently evil, and there is room for understanding between the two groups.
This teaching approach is somewhat progressive in a world where humans and youkai typically exist in a tense, adversarial relationship. Still, I suspect that her history lessons are not always as straightforward as they seem. After all, she has the power to alter memories. What parts of history is she shaping? And why? Does she change the past to make it more palatable, or does she use it to keep the villagers from discovering the darker truths of Gensokyo's past?
Personal Notes: I've had a few private lessons with Keine to discuss Gensokyo's history and its dangerous implications. She's an articulate and patient teacher, and her views on youkai are definitely more open-minded than most. I can't help but think that there's a hidden agenda in her teachings. She's always so careful with her phrasing, as if she's trying to protect the children from learning something they're not ready to understand.
Guardian of the Human Village
As the village guardian, Keine takes her duties very seriously. She stands as a defender not just of the village's physical safety but also its spiritual and cultural integrity. She seems to believe that the human villagers must be preserved at all costs, even if that means employing her more dangerous abilities to erase memories or alter perceptions in order to protect them.
Her role as a protector seems somewhat at odds with her teaching position. In one capacity, she educates the children and villagers to understand the nature of their world; in the other, she employs more drastic measures to ensure their safety, even if it involves obliterating certain parts of their memory. She's a quiet sentinel in the village, often intervening behind the scenes to keep the peace.
Personal Notes: Keine's protective nature can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword. While she undoubtedly acts in the best interests of her people, there's always the risk that the information she withholds or alters could backfire. What would happen if the village knew the full truth of Gensokyo's past—the history she so carefully curates? Would they panic? Or would they rise up in defiance of the forces that threaten them?
Interactions with Others
Relationship with Youkai
Despite her status as a youkai, Keine maintains a complicated relationship with other youkai. Many view her as a neutral party—neither fully allied with humans nor fully with youkai. She seems to play a role similar to that of a mediator between the two groups. However, her transformation into a youkai at the full moon is a reminder of the inherent tension in her existence. There are those who suspect her youkai nature, but few have the audacity to challenge her, given her strength and ability to protect the Human Village.
Her relationship with the youkai of the Human Village is largely cooperative, but she maintains a degree of distance. She doesn't seem to harbor animosity towards all youkai, but neither does she trust them all. Marisa Kirisame and Reimu Hakurei both have a relationship with her built on mutual respect, though I suspect Keine has moments of doubt about their true motives.
Personal Notes: I've observed Keine interacting with a few youkai, and it's clear that she's not overly friendly, but she's not dismissive either. She keeps a sharp eye on the Tengu and other potentially dangerous youkai factions, but there seems to be an unspoken understanding between her and some of them. She's not afraid to stand up for the humans, but she also knows when to keep the peace.
Potential Threat Level: Low to Moderate
Despite her dual nature and immense power, Keine's personal code and desire to protect make her unlikely to act as a major threat to anyone unless provoked. Her ability to alter memories is certainly dangerous, especially if used maliciously, but she appears to use it primarily to protect the villagers rather than manipulate them for personal gain. Her transformation into a youkai guardian could be a threat if the village were ever attacked by a more dangerous foe, but unless a serious event triggers her wrath, she seems unlikely to take aggressive action against outsiders.
However, her dual nature could be a significant wildcard. If she were ever forced to choose between her human responsibilities and her youkai instincts, the consequences could be unpredictable.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Study the Long-Term Effects of Memory Manipulation: Keine's ability to alter memories could have far-reaching consequences on both individuals and societies. What happens when someone's memories are rewritten or erased? Are the people involved aware of the changes, or do they adapt to their new reality without question?
Examine Her Role in Gensokyo's History: As both a historian and someone who can alter history itself, Keine may hold the key to understanding the true history of Gensokyo—or at least a version of it. It would be worth trying to find out what parts of history she chooses to hide or reshape.
Observe Her Youkai Transformations: Her youkai form is one of the most intriguing aspects of Keine. It would be useful to document her transformation process and explore the psychological and physiological changes that occur.
Guided Tour of the Human Village – Led by Keine Kamishirasawa
The Human Village – A Place of Contrasts and Quiet Curiosity
Designation: Low Threat Level (mostly peaceful, though its isolationist nature poses unique challenges)
The Human Village is a surprisingly quaint and peaceful settlement nestled at the base of the Youkai Mountain, and while it may seem unremarkable on the surface, it is one of Gensokyo's most intriguing human enclaves. This village exists in a delicate balance between the human world and the youkai that surround it, making it an ideal place to study the relationship between the two species. The village's isolation from the rest of Gensokyo has allowed it to maintain a unique culture and a self-sustaining lifestyle that is difficult to find elsewhere in this world.
I was fortunate enough to receive a guided tour of the village from Keine Kamishirasawa, a local teacher and historian who also serves as the guardian of the village. Given her knowledge of both human history and youkai lore, she was the perfect person to guide me through this area, though it became clear quite quickly that my usual scientific methods of observation would need to be adjusted to accommodate the particularities of village life.
The Village Itself
The Human Village stands in sharp contrast to other areas of Gensokyo, such as the Scarlet Devil Mansion or the Palace of the Earth Spirits, where youkai reign supreme. Here, humans live in relative peace, though they are well aware of the dangers that lurk outside the village's borders. The village is surrounded by fields of rice, small homes, and a series of winding streets that give it a calm, rustic atmosphere. Despite the peaceful exterior, it is clear that the youkai influence is never far away. Even in the safety of the village, many of the townspeople carry with them a degree of unease—a sense of precarity that comes from living in a world where humans are not the dominant species.
As we walked through the village, I couldn't help but notice the clash of worlds that exists within these boundaries: youkai and humans living side by side, but in an uneasy harmony. The children, under Keine's tutelage, learn about both human history and the youkai lore that affects their daily lives. While some humans live in fear of the youkai outside, there are others who have embraced the coexistence, acknowledging that their fate is forever intertwined with the world of youkai.
Personal Notes on the Tour
First Impressions
The village itself was more charming than I expected. At first glance, it appeared to be a typical rural settlement—nothing extraordinary, nothing out of the ordinary. But as Keine guided me through the streets, I began to see the subtle signs of its peculiar nature. The villagers, while friendly, were clearly on edge—always scanning the horizon, always aware of their surroundings, as if the peace they've built is a delicate thing that could shatter at any moment.
Cultural Differences
It was fascinating to learn how the humans of the village have adapted to life in such close proximity to youkai. While some villagers are openly fearful of youkai, others have learned to live alongside them. The local farmers, for example, have an interesting relationship with the youkai of Youkai Mountain—they provide them with small offerings in exchange for peaceful cohabitation. The villagers view youkai not as enemies, but as powerful beings to be respected.
Children's Education
I was particularly struck by the way the children of the village are taught. It wasn't just about reading, writing, and arithmetic—Keine was also teaching them how to navigate the world of youkai: what to do if they encountered a dangerous youkai, how to negotiate with less threatening ones, and even how to deal with memory-erasing incidents. It's a unique form of education, one that is as much about survival as it is about intellectual development. The children's cautious curiosity and mature outlook were evident—these were not the naïve children of a peaceful, untroubled village; these were children hardened by the realities of living in a world where youkai exist.
Interactions with Keine Kamishirasawa
Respectful and Informed
Keine is a woman of great intelligence and dignity. As we toured the village, she answered my questions with impressive knowledge, not only of the history of the village but also of the sociopolitical dynamics between the humans and youkai. She seemed to have a calming presence, which is perhaps why the villagers trust her so much. It became evident to me that her role as guardian is as much about keeping peace of mind as it is about physical protection.
Slightly Overbearing
There were moments during the tour when Keine's sense of protection for the village became a bit overwhelming. She was highly protective of the village's secrets and customs, which I understand, but there were times when her guarded nature left me feeling as though I was more of a visitor than a guest. I respect her caution, but I do believe she underestimates the value of outside perspective—a mistake that may one day cost her if the village's isolation leads to a lack of understanding of the world beyond.
Humor and Warmth
That said, Keine has a wry sense of humor that caught me off guard. Despite her stoic, guardian-like exterior, she's not above sarcastic remarks or teasing comments, especially when speaking about the eccentricities of the village's inhabitants. It was a relief to see that beneath the weight of her responsibilities, Keine is still able to retain a bit of her humanity—her warmth is genuine, even if carefully hidden under layers of formality.
The Human Village is a fascinating microcosm of Gensokyo's complex coexistence between humans and youkai. Though it may seem like a simple, rustic settlement, the tension and delicate peace between these two groups provide a depth that I hadn't anticipated. Keine Kamishirasawa, as both teacher and guardian, plays a crucial role in maintaining the fragile balance of this village. It is clear that her leadership is both respected and essential, but it remains to be seen whether the villagers' approach to youkai will endure in the face of outside challenges.
My time here has given me much to reflect on, particularly the psychological effects of living in such an environment. The villagers' sense of security is not born from strength, but from knowledge—an awareness of the complex world around them and the steps they must take to survive within it.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Human-Youkai Coexistence: Study how the village's approach to youkai influences human society within Gensokyo. Does their peaceful coexistence provide any lessons for other human settlements?
Keine's Memory Erasure Abilities: Investigate the exact mechanics of Keine's memory erasure—is it purely magical, or is there a biological component to it? How does it affect her own memories?
Villager Psychology: Delve deeper into the psychological impact of living in constant proximity to youkai. How does this environment shape their personal relationships and overall worldview?
The Palace of the Earth Spirits – Mysterious, Complex, and Quite Dangerous
Threat Level: Moderate to High (depending on the mood of the inhabitants)
The Palace of the Earth Spirits is one of the more enigmatic locations in Gensokyo. Located deep within the Underground, far below the surface of the Earth, it is the home of the Earth Spirits, a group of youkai who have long been associated with the earth, mineral resources, and the underworld. Despite its subterranean nature, the palace is not a mere cavernous hole—it is a massive structure, a grand palace carved directly into the living rock. The Palace is the seat of power for Satori Komeiji, the Master of the Palace, and her younger sister, Koishi Komeiji, as well as a host of other creatures who make their home in this strange and hostile environment.
What makes the Palace of the Earth Spirits so unique is that it is not just the home of an elite group of youkai; it is also a place of psychic power, mental manipulation, and unfathomable depth. The Palace is heavily associated with the ability to read and control thoughts, alter memories, and tap into the darker corners of the mind—making it a dangerous place for anyone who isn't prepared to deal with its occupants. If you're not careful, you might find yourself under the mental influence of its denizens without even realizing it.
The Komeiji Sisters
Satori Komeiji – The Master of the Palace
Satori Komeiji is the leader of the Earth Spirits and the ruler of the Palace. A youkai with the unique and dangerous ability to read minds, she is not exactly the most approachable figure in Gensokyo. Her mind-reading powers allow her to perceive the innermost thoughts, fears, and desires of anyone in her presence. However, she isn't just an invasive psychic—she is also highly intelligent and strategic, often using her power for manipulation rather than direct confrontation.
Despite her extraordinary abilities, Satori is often seen as introverted and emotionally distant. While she can read minds, this ability is more of a curse than a blessing, leaving her to constantly deal with the overwhelming flood of thoughts from others. The constant influx of thoughts, emotions, and desires eventually led to her retreating deep underground, where she could escape the mental noise of the surface world. In a way, her mind-reading abilities seem to be her greatest strength and her greatest weakness—she knows too much, and this knowledge isolates her from others.
Her appearance is also quite distinct. Satori has three eyes, which is not only a visual cue of her mind-reading abilities but also a symbol of her power to perceive things beyond normal human understanding. She is often depicted as a quiet, dignified figure, though the constant burden of being able to read others' thoughts can make her an unpredictable and sometimes unpredictable presence.
Personal Notes: I've had several encounters with Satori, and while she is certainly not hostile, I cannot shake the feeling that I'm always being evaluated, even if she doesn't say a word. She has a way of making you feel like she knows everything about you, which is deeply unsettling. It's almost as if she's always two steps ahead in every conversation, which makes it incredibly difficult to maintain any kind of secrecy. However, I've also noticed that Satori rarely uses her abilities to directly manipulate anyone. She seems more interested in observing and understanding than in exerting control over others. There's something oddly respectful about that, though I'm not sure if I can trust it completely.
Koishi Komeiji – The Unseen and the Unpredictable
Koishi Komeiji, Satori's younger sister, is perhaps the most bizarre and unpredictable entity in the Palace. Unlike her sister, who can read minds directly, Koishi possesses the ability to manipulate the unconscious mind. She is capable of altering the subconscious thoughts of others, planting ideas and suggestions that emerge later, often without the person realizing they've been influenced.
Koishi's powers are highly dangerous because they don't operate on the conscious mind—instead, they infiltrate the deeper recesses of a person's psyche. If someone interacts with Koishi, they might not even notice the changes she's made to their thoughts and perceptions until much later, when those changes manifest in unexpected ways. She's like a walking seed of chaos, unpredictably altering the mental landscape around her. Her motives are difficult to discern; sometimes she seems to be playful, other times dangerously capricious. But in the end, her powers make her both an intriguing and terrifying figure to anyone who might try to interact with her.
Personal Notes: Koishi is a bit of a wild card. I've tried to have a few conversations with her, but they always end in confusion. She has a way of twisting her words and making everything sound slightly off, as if she's playing with reality itself. I'm not sure how much of what she says is true, but I do know one thing: she doesn't have a filter, and she likes to sow confusion. There are times when I genuinely feel like I'm losing my grip on reality just talking to her.
She's clearly dangerous, but also highly unpredictable. I'm hesitant to label her as a "threat," since her actions are often motivated by whimsy rather than malice. However, I wouldn't trust her around anything important—her influence is subtle but insidious.
The Earth Spirits and Other Residents
The Palace of the Earth Spirits isn't just the domain of the Komeiji sisters. There are other beings that make their home in the Palace, though many of them are less well-known.
The Earth Spirits (Earth Youkai)
These creatures, as their name suggests, are associated with the earth and minerals. Many of them are elemental in nature, linked to the rocky depths and the very foundation of Gensokyo. These youkai are not inherently malevolent, though they are territorial and will defend their homes fiercely if provoked.
Earth Spirits are generally solitary but have a communal sense of identity, often forming close-knit groups with other earth-based youkai. They're also known to be difficult to interact with, as they have their own peculiar customs and prefer to avoid outsiders unless it's absolutely necessary.
Personal Notes: I've attempted to engage with a few Earth Spirits during my time in the Underground, but their aloofness and lack of interest in anything outside their own domain made it very hard to form a meaningful connection. I've been warned not to venture too far into the deeper parts of the palace without proper guides or permission. I suspect these beings don't take kindly to intruders.
The Palace's Defenses
The Palace itself is a fortress, one that is designed to protect its inhabitants and keep unwanted guests at bay. The terrain surrounding the Palace is hostile—many areas are filled with treacherous underground rivers, lava flows, and other natural hazards. The Palace's defenses also include psychic barriers that can cause disorientation and confusion, making it difficult for outsiders to navigate.
Personal Notes: I've learned this lesson the hard way. After attempting to explore the deeper chambers of the Palace, I found myself mentally trapped in an illusory maze created by the psychic barriers. It was a harrowing experience, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There's a reason that few outsiders venture here.
The Palace of the Earth Spirits is not a place to be entered lightly. Its inhabitants—Satori, Koishi, and the Earth Spirits—are powerful and unpredictable beings who wield mental abilities that can manipulate or even obliterate one's sense of reality. While the Palace is not inherently malicious, its denizens are not to be underestimated, and there are no guarantees that one will leave without encountering some form of mental distortion.
If you find yourself in the Palace, I would advise caution. The Komeiji sisters are not necessarily hostile, but their powers could easily cause irreparable harm if you're not careful. Approach with respect and awareness, and remember that the Palace is not just a physical structure—it is a labyrinth of the mind itself.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Psychic Barriers and Mental Manipulation: I need to study the psychic effects of the Palace and the mental influence of its inhabitants. How do these barriers affect the mind, and can they be counteracted?
Historical Context of the Komeiji Sisters: Investigating the origins of Satori and Koishi, particularly their involvement in the Underground, could provide useful context for understanding their motivations and powers.
The Earth Spirits: A deeper dive into the ecology and culture of the Earth Spirits would be beneficial. Why do they choose to live in the Palace, and what role do they play in the broader balance between youkai and humans?
Gaining Permission from Satori Komeiji – An Exercise in Patience and Strategy
Subject: Gaining Access to the Palace of the Earth Spirits – A Delicate Negotiation
Designation: Threat Level: Low to Moderate (Satori's mood can swing unpredictably)
After my previous attempts to study the Palace of the Earth Spirits from a distance, it became evident that simply wandering into the Underground domain of Satori Komeiji without permission would be both unwise and potentially catastrophic. The Palace, like its master, is not something one can simply "visit." This is not just a matter of physical barriers or dangers—it's an issue of psychic and mental boundaries. Satori's domain is as much a psychological labyrinth as it is a physical one. If I hoped to gain meaningful access to study her home and its residents, I would need her permission—but obtaining that permission wouldn't be as simple as knocking on a door and asking.
1. The Preliminary Approach:
My initial instinct was to approach Satori directly. While she is not known for being outwardly hostile, her mind-reading abilities made me hesitant to approach without first planning my strategy carefully. It's one thing to request permission to study a site; it's quite another to walk into the mental minefield of someone who can perceive every thought, every doubt, and every hidden agenda behind my words.
To gain access, I had to be both transparent and tactful, which proved more difficult than expected. Satori, while quiet and often reserved, is no fool. She's an expert in parsing motives, and I knew that any hint of insincerity would immediately set off her mental alarm bells. I couldn't afford to appear overly eager or desperate, as that would surely raise her suspicions. On the flip side, I also had to make it clear that I was serious about my intentions and that my study would not disrupt the delicate balance of her home.
2. The First Meeting – The Right Tone:
I began with a formal, respectful approach. I knew that Satori valued knowledge, and that was an angle I could work with. Instead of diving straight into the request, I started by expressing genuine interest in her work and the nature of her domain. I made sure to mention my studies into psychic phenomena, mental manipulation, and the history of the Underground, framing myself as someone who could bring fresh insights into her world rather than just a tourist seeking to exploit it.
Satori's response was... guarded, to say the least. She didn't dismiss me outright, but she didn't offer an immediate invitation either. Her eyes—those sharp, three-eyed stares—were unsettling, as if she was peeling back layers of my mind and sifting through the jumble of thoughts I was trying to keep under control.
One of her first questions was pointed: "What do you truly seek to understand?"
This question took me off guard, but I quickly responded by explaining that my interest was primarily academic, not exploratory or intrusive. I emphasized that I had no interest in meddling with the more personal aspects of her life or that of her subjects. I made it clear that I wanted to study the psychic properties of the Palace and the effects it has on both its inhabitants and visitors. This was, of course, partially true—though I had other motives, I didn't want to make it sound like I was there to dig up secrets.
Personal Note: The mental tension was palpable. Satori's scrutiny is like a weight on your chest, a constant reminder that you're not in control of the situation. I'm used to dealing with potentially dangerous beings, but this was a different level. It's not just that she could read my thoughts—it's that she understood the nuances of my thinking.
3. Her Response: The First Step Toward Approval:
After a long pause—during which I could feel her evaluating me—I was granted conditional approval to study the Palace under strict terms. Satori made it very clear that she would not allow me free reign of the Palace. I was permitted to explore certain areas, particularly those related to the psychic phenomena I wished to study, but I was not to delve into the personal lives of the inhabitants or intrude on any matters that might be seen as private.
I would also be accompanied by a guide—likely one of her Earth Spirit subordinates—to ensure that I didn't wander into forbidden territories or engage in activities that could be seen as invasive. Satori's warning about Koishi was especially pointed: "Do not expect to understand her. If you do, you may lose more than you gain."
This was not just a polite caution; it was a clear warning. Koishi's powers over the unconscious mind are not to be underestimated. I made a mental note to avoid any interaction with her unless absolutely necessary.
4. The Mental and Physical Security Measures:
Satori also warned me about the psychic defenses embedded throughout the Palace. She was less direct about what these defenses were, but I could tell that she was referring to mental traps and disorienting psychic barriers that could easily lead to disorientation or worse.
Interestingly, Satori mentioned that my own thoughts would be monitored during my visit, as a form of protection against external threats or "unwanted influences." She explained that if I became disoriented or began thinking thoughts that were dangerous (likely to myself or others), she would intervene. While this was ostensibly a form of safeguard, I couldn't help but wonder what she would consider dangerous thoughts. Would she be able to stop me if I had an accidental lapse in judgment? What about if I made some innocuous error in my thinking? These were things I'd need to consider carefully.
Additionally, there was an emphasis on my behavior during the study. Satori made it clear that any attempt to manipulate the environment or its inhabitants in ways that went against her approval would result in immediate expulsion—and I had the distinct impression that her expulsion methods would not be gentle.
5. Preparing for the Study – Mental Readiness:
Having obtained permission, I now need to prepare for the study itself. Satori's terms are clear—I'm allowed access, but only to the areas that align with my research interests. Koishi is a wild card, and I will need to be extra cautious around her. But the true challenge lies in keeping my own mind in check. As much as I pride myself on my intellectual discipline, I suspect that the mental atmosphere of the Palace will test me in ways I cannot fully anticipate.
My study of the psychic defenses will be a top priority, though I suspect this will be a difficult task. Understanding how Satori's mental influence works is the key to understanding how the Palace operates on a deeper level—and it may offer insights into psychic phenomena that could help explain much of what I've encountered in Gensokyo.
Personal Notes
I'm still not entirely sure what Satori really thinks of me. Her approval was a strategic move, I'm sure—she knows that I'm not just some wandering fool seeking to poke around her domain. But what exactly does she want from me? There's something more going on here than a simple academic exchange, and I can't help but feel like I'm walking on a mental tightrope. Satori's patience may be infinite, but mine is not. One wrong move, and I could find myself trapped in her labyrinth of thoughts—or worse, under the scrutiny of her unblinking gaze.
I'm looking forward to the study, but I can't shake the feeling that this permission is just the first step. There are layers here that I have yet to peel back.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Satori's Mental Manipulation: While I've received permission, understanding how her mind-reading powers work on a deeper level will be crucial. Do they allow for covert influence or just observation?
Psychic Barriers and their Effects: I need to find out more about how the mental barriers around the Palace operate. Are they purely defensive, or do they serve a greater purpose?
Koishi Komeiji: I'll need to find a way to interact with Koishi cautiously. If she does indeed have the ability to manipulate unconscious thoughts, it would be unwise to engage with her without a plan.
Satori Komeiji – The Mind-Reading Youkai, A Study in Consciousness and Empathy
Satori Komeiji – The Mind-Reading Youkai of the Underworld
Satori Komeiji is a remarkable youkai whose mind-reading abilities place her among the most fascinating and complex beings I have encountered in Gensokyo. Unlike Koishi, her younger sister, who lives in a state of disconnection from the conscious world, Satori has full access to the thoughts, desires, and emotions of others, a gift that is both a blessing and a curse.
Satori's powers are tied to her Third Eye, much like her sister's, but where Koishi's Third Eye allows her to tap into the subconscious and unconscious thoughts of those around her, Satori's allows her to read the conscious minds of others. This ability gives her a kind of empathic superiority, making her a powerful figure in the Underworld, where she resides with her pet and companion, Kero (a fish youkai), and where she is considered something of a queen of minds.
Despite her abilities, Satori is not without vulnerabilities. The most notable of these is her inability to filter the constant influx of thoughts from others. While she can control her power to some extent, Satori often struggles with the overwhelming barrage of emotional noise that comes from the minds of those around her. This can lead to sensory overload and mental exhaustion, making Satori's life both a constant struggle for balance and an unending exercise in emotional control.
Satori's Abilities – The Third Eye and Mind Reading
Satori's Third Eye grants her the ability to read the minds of others. At first glance, this may seem like a straightforward power, akin to telepathy or empathy. However, it is important to understand that Satori's abilities are far more intrusive and all-encompassing than simple mind-reading. She does not just "hear" thoughts—she perceives the raw, unfiltered thoughts of others, including their fears, desires, and memories.
This makes her a living, breathing archive of every hidden and unspoken thought that crosses the minds of others. As such, she is privy to information that others are often unaware of, and her interactions with people are deeply complicated. She cannot turn off her abilities at will, and her empathy—while immense—often becomes a burden as she is flooded with other people's subconscious feelings. This perpetual emotional overload sometimes leads to mental fatigue, requiring Satori to retreat from the world in order to restore her emotional equilibrium.
One of the most curious aspects of Satori's powers is that she can "read" multiple minds simultaneously. This makes her ability to understand the collective psyche of Gensokyo's inhabitants extraordinarily powerful. If she were inclined to, Satori could uncover secrets, insecurities, and hidden motivations from almost anyone around her, but she generally avoids exploiting these thoughts unless absolutely necessary.
While Satori's abilities offer her deep insight into others' minds, they also mean that she can never truly escape the internal monologues of others. Even when she tries to relax or have a quiet moment to herself, she is bombarded with a cacophony of thoughts, emotions, and desires from all directions. The constant noise has led her to seek out solitude, often retreating to her home in the Underworld or spending time with her pets, as this allows her to find a degree of mental peace.
Satori's Personality – Empathy and Isolation
Satori is an incredibly empathetic individual, but her ability to read minds means that she cannot truly disconnect from the emotions of others. While her ability to empathize with people allows her to form close bonds, it also means that she is often haunted by the darker emotions of others. She cannot avoid the constant tug of conflicting desires and unspoken fears that lie beneath the surface of every person she encounters.
This often makes her appear distant, as she is forced to hide her true emotions in order to avoid being overwhelmed by the emotions of others. While Satori is far more introspective than her younger sister Koishi, she is also much more cautious and reserved. Her ability to truly understand others on a profound level makes it difficult for her to form deep, unguarded connections with anyone—not because she doesn't want to, but because her powers place her in a constant state of vulnerability.
In social interactions, Satori must be particularly careful. Though she may be aware of every little detail about a person's thoughts or intentions, she must be discreet in how she expresses herself. Reading minds is often seen as a violation of privacy, and Satori must constantly walk a fine line between using her powers for good and respecting the boundaries of those around her.
Satori's emotional isolation is both her strength and her weakness. Her immense empathy allows her to understand others deeply, but it also leads her to suppress her own emotions in order to maintain some semblance of emotional distance. Despite this, she has shown great compassion for those who are emotionally vulnerable or misunderstood—particularly Koishi, her younger sister, whom Satori tries to help, even when Koishi chooses to live in a disjointed mental state.
The Nature of Satori's Mind-Reading – Ethical Considerations and Research Potential
The most pressing ethical consideration in my study of Satori's abilities is the matter of privacy.
Though she uses her powers with restraint, the mere act of reading someone's mind without consent raises troubling questions about the limits of personal autonomy. Satori's power to perceive hidden thoughts, even if not fully understood, is a significant violation of privacy, and I have to be cautious in how I engage with her. If I am to continue my research into her powers, I must be mindful of the boundaries I impose, ensuring that I do not inadvertently overstep in my attempts to observe her abilities.
That said, there is considerable scientific interest in Satori's powers. The way her Third Eye interacts with the conscious minds of others could yield valuable insights into psychology, empathy, and neural connections between minds. I must tread carefully, however, as Satori's empathy and subconscious burden could make her an unreliable subject for study if she is forced to confront too many uncomfortable truths about herself or others.
Final Thoughts – Empathy and the Cost of Power
Satori Komeiji is one of the most complex beings I have encountered in Gensokyo. Her Third Eye offers her an unparalleled understanding of the minds around her, but it also comes at the cost of her own emotional well-being. The constant strain of hearing the thoughts of others, of seeing into the souls of those she interacts with, weighs heavily on her. Yet, despite the challenges she faces, Satori remains one of the most empathetic and compassionate individuals I have met, though her powers often leave her isolated from the world.
There is value in continuing my study of Satori—not just for the scientific implications of her mind-reading abilities, but for the deeper questions her existence raises about empathy, mental health, and the balance between personal power and emotional well-being.
Satori Komeiji's Pets – Mind-Bending Companions
The Pets of Satori Komeiji – Fascinating and Mysterious Creatures of the Underground
Designation: Varying Threat Levels (depending on the pet, of course)
While Satori Komeiji's Palace of the Earth Spirits is a place of deep mental complexities and psychic defenses, it is not just her mind-reading abilities that make her domain unique. Satori is also accompanied by a handful of pets, whose very presence adds layers of intrigue and danger to the already enigmatic atmosphere of the Palace. These pets are not your average household creatures. They have been carefully chosen—or perhaps even influenced—by Satori's psychic abilities, which could explain their highly unusual characteristics and behaviors. Most of them seem to serve more as extensions of her will or as creatures that embody certain psychological concepts, rather than simply serving as companions in the traditional sense.
Thus far, I have encountered three main pets under Satori's care: Orin, Utsuho, and Satori's Magnamalo, Genma. (Yes, you read that right.) Each of these pets has played a significant role in the functioning of the Underground, and studying them provides valuable insight into how Satori uses her domain to maintain control over her environment.
Rin Kaenbyou (a.k.a. Orin) – The Hell Cat
Species: Kasha (a species of cat youkai known for stealing corpses and carting them away)
Primary Role: Corpse Carrier to the former Hell of Blazing Fires, Messenger of Satori
The first pet I encountered upon entering the palace was Rin Kaenbyou, also known as Orin—a kasha, a cat youkai with the ability to carry away the dead. While she claims that it's more fun for her to take on a pure cat form, she can't talk to humans that way—nor does it seem she can do her job in carting away corpses (... which she takes a strangely morbid yet great pleasure in), Orin's true form is more humanoid, with cat-like features and a playful or energetic demeanor. Despite her whimsical nature, she is incredibly strong, highly intelligent, and fiercely loyal to Satori Komeiji, serving as one of the Palace's primary guardians. Her eyes glow with an eerie intensity, often making me feel as though she can see straight through me, a reflection of her connection to Satori's mental influence.
Orin's abilities go beyond her role as a guardian—she is deeply connected to death and the afterlife. She enjoys conversing with the newly deceased, often those on the verge of death, and collects corpses (as mentioned earlier) to transport them to the former Hell of Blazing Fires, where their souls fuel the flames. She can also control spirits, reanimating corpses as zombies or driving vengeful spirits from the surface world. Despite her grim role, Orin's personality is surprisingly lively, curious, and surprisingly honorable. Last time she lost to Reimu for a corpse along with the shrine maiden victory against Utsuho Reiuji, one of Satori's other pets, in a secret test of strength, she surprisingly bore no ill will from her defeat. Her loyalty, playful demeanor, and connection to Satori add depth to her character, making her much more than a mere creature of death.
Personal Notes: While Orin has yet to openly interact with me in any meaningful way, her presence is undeniably intimidating. The first time I laid eyes on her, I felt an unsettling pressure in the air—like I was being judged by some force I couldn't fully comprehend. If Satori's mind-reading abilities are powerful, then Orin's instinctual connection to her mind is almost like an extension of that power. She's not someone I would want to anger—her claws are sharp, and she has a formidable ability to sense any threat, even if it's just a fleeting thought.
Utsuho Reiuji – The Sun-Consuming Raven
Species: Youkai (A hybrid of a raven and a nuclear reactor—yes, you read that correctly)
Primary Role: Power Source, Protector, Possibly Satori's "muscle"
The second pet, and certainly the most bizarre, is Utsuho Reiuji, a youkai with a combination of both mythological and scientific origins. Utsuho was originally a raven youkai, but after an accident in which she consumed the core of the Yatagarasu (a mythological three-legged raven), she absorbed the power of a nuclear reactor, granting her the ability to manipulate nuclear energy. Her power is such that she can generate and control energy blasts capable of devastating anything in her path, as well as convert energy into a variety of forms. In many ways, Utsuho represents a strange collision between ancient myth and modern science, and her very existence is a testament to the unpredictable nature of Gensokyo's inhabitants.
Utsuho's role in the Palace seems to be twofold: first, as a source of immense power (she is essentially the nuclear reactor that fuels much of the underground infrastructure), and second, as a form of muscle in case the Palace is ever threatened. While Satori generally prefers a more cerebral approach to maintaining control, Utsuho provides the physical strength necessary to defend the Palace when required.
Utsuho is also highly loyal to Satori, though her impressive powers and unstable energy output make her a potentially dangerous companion. Despite her overwhelming destructive capabilities, she is surprisingly gentle and playful when interacting with those she trusts, though that playfulness can quickly turn into destructive impulsiveness if she is riled up.
Personal Notes: Utsuho is a walking contradiction. On one hand, she's an incredibly powerful being with the potential to obliterate entire areas with a single thought. On the other, she comes off as almost childlike, with a level of naiveté that belies her true power. The first time I encountered her, I had to carefully manage my thoughts—she might not understand subtlety, but she understands emotion and can sense the shifts in energy around her. Given her volatile nature, I'm careful to avoid causing her any distress, as a single uncontrolled outburst could result in me being reduced to dust.
The Third Pet – Genma
Species: Magnamalo (a Fanged Wyvern from the Monster Hunter world)
Primary Role: Guard Dog and Steed (I pity any unfortunate intruder who becomes his next meal…)
To my absolute surprise, I was not expecting Satori to have a Fanged Wyvern for a pet, let alone a Magnamalo. He seems rather tame since Satori was with him, but I'm a bit concerned what would have happened if Satori wasn't with him during that time. According to Satori, he is a loyal guard dog that listens to only her, her sister and her other pets. He seems to get along rather well with Rin in particular.
That said, it's best to not make Genma upset or do anything that would tick him off, because as we all know… making a Magnamalo angry will be the last thing you've ever done.
Personal Notes: I've noticed that Genma calms down when Satori scratches him under his chin or his cheeks. Maybe that's how she tamed the beast in the first place? Either way, I'm not risking losing a hand in case if he gets agitated, or worse.
Satori Komeiji's pets are as fascinating and enigmatic as she is. Each one seems to serve a specific purpose, whether it's guarding her domain, acting as a source of power, or maintaining the delicate psychic balance of the Palace. While I have only a limited understanding of their roles, there is no doubt that they are not ordinary creatures. These pets are intricately tied to Satori's mental landscape, serving as both companions and extensions of her will.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Psychic Bonding Between Satori and Her Pets: The exact nature of the mental connection between Satori and her pets warrants further study. How do they communicate with her, and what role does her telepathic influence play in shaping their behavior?
Genma: From what I've been told, he patrols the entire area a few times a day to ward off any intruders just by his presence alone. There are times where he decides to take a nap in the nuclear reactor. According to Satori, he says it's a warm cozy blanket to him and the heat doesn't bother him. Utsuho doesn't mind since she enjoys his company. Regardless, Genma is a loyal pet and is Satori's steed in case if she doesn't feel like walking or flying around.
Utsuho's Energy Control: Utsuho's ability to manipulate nuclear energy is a unique phenomenon in Gensokyo. Understanding how her energy works could reveal insights into energy manipulation and its interaction with youkai physiology.
Koishi Komeiji – A Study in Subconscious Magic, Unpredictable Behavior, and the Stabilizing Ring
Koishi Komeiji – The Girl Who Lives in Her Subconscious
Koishi Komeiji is perhaps one of the most mysterious and difficult individuals I've encountered in Gensokyo. As the younger sister of Satori Komeiji, the mind-reading youkai, Koishi is a unique being, known for her disconnectedness from the conscious world. Her abilities to access and manipulate the subconscious mind are both powerful and dangerous, and it is likely that these powers are what make her such a wild card in Gensokyo's otherwise relatively stable framework of youkai politics.
However, there is one detail I have become particularly interested in recently: the mysterious emerald ring that Koishi now wears on her left ring finger. This piece of jewelry is a recent addition to her otherwise eccentric persona, and I have been investigating its origins, as it appears to serve as a stabilizer and inhibitor for her often unpredictable and overwhelming powers.
The ring's creation is linked to Flandre Scarlet, of all people—Koishi's first-ever friend. After Koishi reopened her Third Eye, she found herself struggling to maintain a sense of control over her abilities, which could easily spiral into dangerous levels of subconscious influence. This ring, crafted by Patchouli Knowledge and Koakuma, at Koishi's request, serves as both a stabilizer for her powers and a means to help her maintain a semblance of emotional equilibrium.
Koishi's Powers – The Subconscious Unleashed
Koishi's abilities are deeply connected to the subconscious—her own and others'. She possesses the Third Eye, a gift that allows her to perceive and influence the hidden thoughts, desires, and emotions of those around her. This is similar to her sister Satori's power of mind-reading, but with one key difference: Koishi cannot see the conscious thoughts of others, but instead, she taps directly into their subconscious—the much more chaotic, emotional, and uncontrollable realm of the mind.
For Koishi, the Third Eye was a blessing and a curse. At some point, she chose to seal it away—closing her Third Eye was a means to shield herself from the overwhelming barrage of thoughts and emotions of others. However, she later chose to reopen it, which drastically altered her perception of the world and her ability to connect with others. This reopening caused her to experience the unfiltered rawness of both her own subconscious and that of those around her, leading to a profound disconnection from reality.
It's here that the ring comes into play. Since reopening her Third Eye, Koishi's powers have become far more erratic and dangerous. Her ability to influence the deepest, most primal aspects of people's subconscious minds could be a threat to the delicate balance of Gensokyo, especially when considering how she can create powerful illusions or manipulate individuals without them even realizing it.
The Ring – Its Purpose and Crafting
The emerald ring Koishi now wears is not just an accessory, but a crucial tool in helping her maintain some semblance of control over her abilities. The ring was created by Patchouli Knowledge—a brilliant magician and researcher with a profound understanding of arcane and magical forces. The design of the ring is relatively simple at first glance, featuring an emerald that glows faintly when Koishi's powers flare up. However, its true purpose is more complex.
I've gathered from conversations with Flandre Scarlet and Patchouli that the ring functions as a stabilizer, dampening the intensity of Koishi's Third Eye powers, particularly when they begin to overwhelm her or lead to unintended consequences. The inhibitor function allows Koishi to engage with her subconscious powers without losing complete control, although the ring is not perfect and still has its limits.
The emerald itself seems to have a special significance, perhaps related to the metaphysical concept of balance. It is possible that emeralds, known for their calming properties in various cultures, are used to create a connection to a more grounded state of being, allowing Koishi to channel her powers more safely.
Koishi's Relationship with Flandre – The First Friend
The bond between Koishi and Flandre Scarlet is also worth noting. Flandre, while often perceived as a chaotic and unpredictable individual in her own right, appears to be one of the few beings that Koishi has ever truly connected with. Their friendship is one built on mutual understanding of the difficulties they face. For Flandre, who has long been confined to the Basement of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Koishi represents a kind of freedom—someone who knows what it is like to be misunderstood, to live in the margins of society, to be isolated from the world due to one's own abilities.
It was Flandre who, after hearing of Koishi's struggles with her own power, suggested the idea of seeking out Patchouli and Koakuma to craft the ring. Flandre, in her own quirky way, recognized that Koishi's powers could be stabilized, even if they could never truly be cured. The emerald ring is as much a symbol of Flandre's care for Koishi as it is a functional item.
From what I've gathered, Flandre's act of kindness is not just motivated by friendship, but also by a shared understanding of what it means to live with uncontrollable power. Flandre, as immortal as she may be, has her own struggles with control—her powers have caused destruction in the past, and her time in isolation has given her a unique perspective on the lives of those who cannot fully integrate with society, like Koishi.
Koishi's Emotional and Mental State – A Persistent Disconnect
Despite the stabilizing effects of the ring, Koishi's emotional state is still a complex and fragile matter. While the ring helps to reel in the wild fluctuations of her subconscious powers, it is not a cure-all. Koishi remains disconnected from much of the world, as she has chosen to live in her own subconscious space. This isolation, while it may offer her protection from external chaos, also keeps her from forming meaningful relationships with those around her.
There is a loneliness that pervades Koishi's existence, and though she seems content to be in the company of those she trusts—such as Flandre, and to some extent, her sister Satori—there is an undeniable emptiness that comes with her inability to truly connect with others. She lives on the fringes of both the conscious and subconscious worlds, never fully participating in either. Her inability to express her own thoughts—not due to an inherent flaw, but because she has closed herself off from conscious interaction—means that much of her world is filled with illusionary constructs and dreamlike states.
Final Observations – A Complex Puzzle
Koishi Komeiji is a multi-faceted individual, whose abilities and psychological state present a fascinating puzzle. The emerald ring, which stabilizes and inhibits her powers, is a crucial piece of that puzzle, and its existence speaks to the balance Koishi seeks to maintain between her powers and her sense of self. Yet, the ring also symbolizes a larger question—how can someone who has chosen to disconnect from the conscious world ever fully reintegrate, if the forces of their own mind are so overwhelming?
I've come to respect Koishi and her emotional resilience, but there remains a profound sadness about her situation. Though the emerald ring serves as a stabilizer, it cannot heal the deeper wounds that keep her trapped in her own subconscious. My next step in this research should be to examine further emotional triggers that could help me understand whether the ring is simply temporary relief, or if it offers a long-term solution for Koishi's state of mind.
The Three Fairies of Light – A Study in Mischief, Chaos, and Unpredictability
The Three Fairies of Light – Luminous Nuisances or Hidden Potential?
Threat Level: Low to Moderate (but never entirely negligible)
The Three Fairies of Light—Sunny Milk, Luna Child, and Star Sapphire—are perhaps some of the most infuriating yet fascinating creatures I have encountered in Gensokyo. Like most fairies, their size and physical strength are laughably small in comparison to the more powerful beings of this world, yet their abilities, while seemingly trivial, are anything but when one considers their collective resourcefulness and the unpredictability they bring with them.
These three are primarily known for their pranks, mischief, and general behavior as a disruptive trio, but their influence extends far beyond simple annoyance. Fairies like them, while seemingly frivolous, hold deeper meanings for Gensokyo's social and natural ecology. Their light-based abilities, for example, connect them to the essence of change and randomness—qualities that are inherent to the natural flow of life in this world, though difficult to study directly.
Sunny Milk – The Reckless Leader
Species: Fairy (Sunlight Fairy)
Primary Role: Self-Proclaimed Leader of the Trio, Sunlight Bender, Instigator of Mischief
Of the Three Fairies of Light, Sunny Milk is the most impulsive and willful, often taking the role of the leader despite her erratic tendencies. She's constantly coming up with new pranks and schemes, frequently using her ability to manipulate and bend sunlight—though she has an unrefined grasp on it. Sunny's main trick is creating blinding flashes of light, which she can use to disorient others, making her an expert in creating chaos in a blink of an eye. The intensity of her light manipulation can be overwhelming, similar to the harsh, all-consuming rays of the sun. Her quick thinking and bold actions allow her to catch opponents off guard, but her recklessness means she often acts without thinking about the long-term consequences. It's this lack of foresight that makes her both dangerous and somewhat of a nuisance.
While her sunlight manipulation can be a useful tool for pranks and creating disorienting illusions, the lack of finesse in her control often leads to unintended consequences—a trait that frequently disrupts my experiments. Whether it's a blinding flash of light at the wrong time or a sudden burst of energy, Sunny's ability to instigate chaos seems to come as naturally to her as breathing. Her chaotic nature, however, also suggests that she thrives in environments where unpredictability reigns.
Personal Notes: Sunny's reckless antics have interfered with my research more than once, as Nitori, Winry, and I learned during a sunlight-based experiment near Misty Lake. Without warning, we were blinded by one of her sudden flash attacks—whether intentional or just part of her usual pranks, it halted my progress for hours. It's clear that her lack of control over her powers is a major hindrance, but it also leads me to wonder whether she could develop more precision with her abilities if she ever learned to focus.
For now, her chaotic nature makes her more of an obstacle than an ally, but perhaps there's some deeper psychological aspect driving her need for attention and control. There could be more to her impulsiveness than mere carelessness—a deeper need for recognition or perhaps a desire to prove herself as the leader of the trio.
Luna Child – The Manipulator of Silence
Species: Fairy (Moonlight Fairy)
Primary Role: Sound Volume Manipulator, Cunning Strategist
Luna Child, the second member of the Three Fairies of Light, is a far more cerebral and stealthy character compared to her more energetic peers. Her primary ability is to mute sound within a specified area, allowing her to move undetected and disorient others by creating an eerie silence. While her powers are most effective when the moon is visible, as they are amplified by moonlight—helping her heal and enhancing her abilities—she is significantly weakened when the moon is absent. Despite her relatively subtle powers, Luna's talent for misdirection and her knack for creating confusion make her a tricky and dangerous fairy, especially when working alongside her companions, Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire.
Luna is known for being clumsy and socially awkward, often tripping over nothing or finding herself in embarrassing situations. However, beneath this awkward exterior lies a more introspective and intellectual side. She enjoys reading books and newspapers, showing a deeper, more skeptical worldview compared to other fairies, who are typically more impulsive. Luna also has a particular fondness for coffee beans and alcohol, which she often steals from humans, further reflecting her desire to blend in with their culture. While her ability to control sound is mostly used for pranks and psychological mischief, Luna's talents also suggest a deeper potential for strategic manipulation, which could be more dangerous than her playful exterior lets on.
Personal Notes: Luna Child's ability to mute sound is unlike anything I've encountered. The first time I crossed paths with her, the eerie silence left me disoriented, and it was only then that I realized how unsettling her power truly is. While she may appear as just a prankster, her ability to manipulate perception makes her far more dangerous than she seems.
What's more interesting is Luna's intellectual curiosity. She reads books and has a more methodical approach to things than her chaotic companions. Her fascination with coffee and alcohol hints at a deeper understanding of human behavior, and I suspect her powers might have psychological applications. Luna may not be the strongest fairy, but her knack for illusions makes her someone to watch.
Star Sapphire – The Observant Strategist
Species: Fairy (Starlight Fairy)
Primary Role: Observer, Movement Tracker
The third member and the most reserved of the Three Fairies of Light, Star Sapphire prefers to stay in the background, using her unique ability to sense movement to stay a step ahead. Unlike her more mischievous companions, Sunny and Luna, who act impulsively, Star's radar-like power lets her detect changes in her environment, giving her a strategic edge. Though her power is limited in that she can only sense movement and can't distinguish between types of living beings, it is always active and unaffected by time or weather, making her constantly aware of her surroundings.
Star is calm, level-headed, and strategic, often acting as the group's tactician. She avoids the chaos of direct pranks, preferring to observe and plan from the sidelines. While she enjoys the occasional prank, she finds more amusement in quirky hobbies, like collecting strange rocks or tending to a mushroom bonsai tree. Her ability to stay detached even in tense situations allows her to find excitement where others might panic. While she may seem like the quiet observer, Star's keen awareness and subtle influence over events make her a potentially formidable figure, capable of shaping outcomes from the shadows.
Personal Notes: Star's ability to sense movement from afar is something I haven't encountered before. It's subtle, but incredibly useful, especially when it comes to preparing for pranks or avoiding trouble. The first time I encountered her, I noticed she seemed to always be a step ahead as if she knew exactly when and where things would happen.
Though she seems uninterested in direct conflict, I get the feeling that Star could be far more dangerous than she lets on. Her powers may not be as flashy as Sunny's or Luna's, but they're far more subtle, and in the right circumstances, they could make her a formidable force. I'll need to pay closer attention in the future—there's more to Star than meets the eye.
The Three Fairies of Light may seem like a trivial nuisance at first glance, but their abilities—and the way they work together as a unit—make them far more significant than most would give them credit for. Each fairy brings something unique to the table: Sunny with her sunlight manipulation, Luna with her sound manipulation, and Star Sapphire with her sense movement. Together, they form a potent combination of chaos, control, and subtle influence that can turn even the most mundane situation into a disorienting experience.
Recommendations for Further Study:
Cooperative Dynamics: How do the Three Fairies of Light cooperate with one another, and what is the nature of their teamwork? It would be worth studying their group dynamics to see if there are any deeper psychological factors at play.
Light Manipulation: The fairies' ability to manipulate light in such a versatile way is worth further research. Can their powers be extended beyond mere pranks and illusions? Is there a practical application to their abilities?
Further Interactions with the Three Fairies of Light – A Study in Mischief, Chaos, and Unpredictable Magic
The Three Fairies of Light – Luminous Nuisances or Potential Subjects for Study?
The Three Fairies of Light—Sunny Milk, Luna Child, and Star Sapphire—have proven to be both persistent distractions and surprisingly valuable subjects for research. Initially, I underestimated just how much of a nuisance these fairies could be, assuming them to be little more than trivial irritants, much like Cirno or other lesser fairies I've encountered. But after a few more interactions, I've come to realize that these three fairies have unpredictable magic and unusual behaviors that make them an important component of Gensokyo's fairy ecosystem, and as such, they may offer valuable data on the nature of fairy physiology, societal structures, and even the wider influence of light-based magic in Gensokyo.
These fairies, like many in Gensokyo, are a product of the land's spiritual energy and natural forces, but their infuriating tendencies seem to outweigh any scientific curiosity I have at times. That said, I do believe there is potential for further observation. I'm starting to realize that their antics may be less meaningless chaos than I originally thought, and perhaps there's a pattern I've missed that links their behavior to larger metaphysical forces.
Fairy Behavior and Magic – The Good, The Bad, and The Irritating
Sunny Milk is the most impulsive and energetic of the Three Fairies of Light, often taking on the role of the leader despite her erratic tendencies. She is constantly coming up with pranks and schemes, using her ability to manipulate sunlight, though her control over it is still somewhat unrefined. Her main trick is creating blinding flashes of light, which she uses to disorient and confuse others, making her an expert at causing chaos in the blink of an eye. The intensity of her light manipulation can be overwhelming, much like the harsh rays of the sun, and her quick thinking allows her to catch opponents off guard. However, this same impulsiveness and lack of foresight often result in unintended consequences, making her both a nuisance and a danger in unpredictable situations. Her chaotic nature thrives in environments where unpredictability reigns, but it also frequently interferes with my research.
Luna Child, the most cerebral of the Three Fairies of Light, thrives on misdirection and subtlety. Her ability to mute sound through the moonlight's power creates an eerie silence, allowing her to move undetected and disorient others in a way that is far more deceptive than Sunny's flashy light tricks. There's a strange interplay between her sound manipulation and the way light behaves in the absence of noise, as if her powers are based not just on darkness but on the tension between opposites. While she often uses her ability for playful pranks, Luna's intellectual nature and penchant for psychological mischief suggest a deeper potential for strategic manipulation. Her pranks may seem harmless, but the way she distorts perception can be far more dangerous than it appears.
Star Sapphire is a curious case. The most reserved of the Three Fairies of Light with more common sense, she somewhat operates quietly behind the scenes with her ability to sense movement, which gives her a constant awareness of her environment. While her companions, Sunny and Luna, thrive on impulsive mischief, Star prefers to observe and plan, using her strategic edge to shape outcomes from the shadows. Her radar-like power allows her to detect changes in her surroundings, though it's limited in that she can only sense movement without distinguishing between types of beings. While not as overtly mischievous as her peers, Star's willingness to collaborate on mischief with her friends adds a cerebral layer to her pranks, and her keen perception and movement-sensing abilities make her a quietly formidable force.
Further Observations – Fairies as a Social Collective
It's becoming increasingly clear to me that the Three Fairies of Light are not merely individuals working on their own whims; they function as a social collective, with roles that seem to overlap and interact in interesting ways. Their constant collaboration—whether they're playing tricks, causing trouble, or running from me during field experiments—suggests a cohesive social structure among fairies in Gensokyo. They work together almost like a well-oiled machine, albeit a machine that operates purely on chaos and mischief rather than logic.
In their case, I suspect that chaos might actually be a form of social order for fairies, one that allows them to maintain a sense of group cohesion despite their inherently individualistic and unpredictable natures. Fairies, after all, are beings born of nature and elemental forces, and their existence seems to thrive on spontaneity. Their social dynamic is far from traditional, but it has a clear purpose: to perpetuate their existence through playful and disruptive means. The fact that they are still around, with all the trouble they cause, indicates they must be doing something right in terms of survival and cultural reproduction.
There's also the aspect of hierarchy to consider, though. Sunny Milk, as the most outgoing and assertive, often seems to take the lead in the group, though I suspect Luna Child or Star Sapphire could easily rise to the top if they so wished. There's an interesting blend of leadership and anarchy within the trio that mirrors the unpredictable nature of Gensokyo itself.
Personal Notes on the Three Fairies
Sunny Milk
I can't help but admire Sunny's boldness, but she's also a constant distraction. Whether it's blinding me with sunlight, setting off unnecessary flare-ups in the middle of experiments, or dragging me into their pranks, she's a walking chaos machine. Her directness and unabashed confidence are qualities that make her a formidable subject of study, but keeping her focus long enough to collect reliable data is a challenge.
Luna Child
Luna's ability to mute the surrounding sound makes her magic more nuanced than her counterparts. I'm still exploring the full extent of her powers, and there's potential for further study into how she manipulates the volume of surround sound. Her tricks are infuriating but reveal interesting possibilities in the realm of moonlight interaction.
Star Sapphire
While she's less disruptive and more sensible than the others, Star Sapphire seems to be the most grounded and strategic of the trio. There's potential for psychological experiments involving her abilities to sense and track movement, though I'll need to approach this carefully. Getting her to cooperate without her running off mid-experiment will be the true test.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Explore Fairy Social Structures: Further study of the Three Fairies' social dynamics could reveal insights into how fairies interact with one another in both cooperative and competitive contexts. Understanding their group behavior might help explain how fairies thrive despite their chaotic tendencies.
Investigate the Science Behind Fairy Light Magic: There's a significant opportunity to study fairy magic and its manipulation of light and shadow. The key will be to control the variables of their powers—something I will attempt by creating more predictable situations (if that's even possible with fairies involved).
The Three Fairies of Light are a constant source of frustration, but beneath their mischievous exterior, there's a great deal of potential for study. They are representative of Gensokyoan fairies as a whole—wild, unpredictable, and yet intriguingly complex. In many ways, they embody the essence of chaos that runs throughout Gensokyo itself. Perhaps, in time, I'll find a way to keep them from interfering with my research long enough to uncover the true nature of their magic. For now, I'll have to settle for documenting what I can while evading their pranks.
The Garden of the Sun – Yuuka Kazami's Domain
Garden of the Sun – A Flower-Filled Paradise with a Hidden Danger
Designation: Moderate Threat Level (if provoked, or if my brother gets too curious about her sunflowers)
The Garden of the Sun is an immense field of sunflowers that stretches across a secluded part of Gensokyo, and it is guarded by Yuuka Kazami, a youkai whose demeanor can best be described as charming—in a very dangerous way. To the unknowing observer, her garden might seem like a tranquil, idyllic place, a patch of natural beauty that seems almost untouched by the chaotic elements of Gensokyo. However, as I quickly learned, there is far more to this garden—and its keeper—than meets the eye.
Yuuka, as I discovered during my visit, is a youkai of great power, known for her control over flowers, particularly sunflowers, and her ability to manipulate emotions. While her disposition may seem calm and welcoming at first, there is an underlying intensity to her nature that can make her dangerous if she feels her domain is threatened or if her fragile mood shifts in the wrong direction.
As for my motivations, I came primarily to observe the plant life—I've heard rumors that the sunflowers here are not just ordinary flowers but may be tied to some form of magic or youkai influence. I'll admit, though, that a part of me was concerned about Ford's curiosity—he has a tendency to get overly fascinated with the scientific potential of any new environment, and I feared his experiments might lead him to tamper with something in Yuuka's garden that could… provoke her.
Yuuka Kazami – The Sunflower Youkai
Species: Youkai (Flower Youkai)
Primary Role: Guardian of the Garden of the Sun, Master of Sunflowers, and a Youkai of Emotional Manipulation
Yuuka Kazami is a youkai whose powers revolve around flowers, specifically sunflowers, and emotion manipulation. On the surface, she may appear to be a gentle and peaceful figure—a kind of flower princess in her own private domain. However, this appearance is a facade hiding a far more complex and unpredictable personality. Yuuka is capable of inflicting great damage when she is angered or if she feels that her territory is being disrespected. The flowers she commands are not only symbols of beauty, but also tools of war—her sunflowers can grow rapidly and lash out, almost like living weapons.
Her garden is expansive, lush with sunflowers that are constantly shifting in subtle ways, almost as if they have a life of their own. It's a place of serenity and danger in equal measure. While her emotions are often tied to the flourishing of the garden, when she feels slighted, the flowers can become more like living traps, their long stems turning into vines that can entangle intruders with alarming speed.
One of the more curious aspects of Yuuka's power is her emotional control—she can subtly influence the emotions of those nearby, inducing feelings of melancholy, joy, or even anger depending on her own mood. This makes interacting with her a delicate matter, as one must remain cautious not to unintentionally trigger her darker side.
The Garden Itself
Appearance
The Garden of the Sun is a vast and sun-drenched landscape dominated by towering sunflowers that seem to stretch endlessly in every direction. The air is thick with the scent of flowers, and there's a perpetual warmth that emanates from the garden, even on days when the weather outside is cool. The sunflowers themselves seem to glow, their large, yellow faces turning toward the sun with an almost sentient awareness. It's easy to get lost in the seemingly endless rows of sunflowers, which feel more like an illusion than a real place.
Floral Enchantment
The sunflowers here are far from ordinary. They are imbued with an almost magical presence, constantly shifting and growing in response to the mood of the surrounding environment. When Yuuka is in a good mood, the garden seems to radiate a gentle warmth, and the flowers bloom in abundance. However, when Yuuka is upset, the sunflowers can become wild and aggressive, their stems snapping like whips or forming tight vines that restrict movement. I learned this firsthand when I inadvertently triggered an emotional shift during my conversation with Yuuka (something I'll explain shortly).
Subtle Threats
While walking through the garden, I could sense the power in the air—the sunflowers were not merely ornamental, they were alive with a kind of intent. It wasn't just the usual youkai territory feeling that one gets when entering the domain of a powerful being. The entire garden seemed to pulse with energy, reacting to every movement. I could tell that my intrusion into her domain was not being taken lightly, but it seemed that, for the time being, Yuuka was in a good mood (a rare occasion, I would learn).
Personal Notes on My Interaction with Yuuka Kazami
First Impressions
Yuuka's first greeting was surprisingly cordial. She came across as a woman with a calm demeanor, offering me tea and inviting me to sit among her sunflowers as if it were the most natural thing in the world. I tried to be polite and respectful, though I couldn't help but feel an underlying unease. It was clear she could read my nervousness, but she didn't seem to be offended by it—at least not at first. She seemed to enjoy the discomfort of others, though, and I wasn't sure if it was an act or if she truly found pleasure in the disquiet of others.
The Mood Shift
During our conversation, I made the mistake of asking her about her relationship with the sunflowers. This was a crucial misstep—the moment I brought it up, I could feel the air thicken around me, as though the temperature had suddenly risen. The sunflowers surrounding us seemed to lean in, their yellow faces narrowing as if listening intently. Yuuka's eyes narrowed as well, and for a brief moment, I feared I might have gone too far. Luckily, I managed to redirect the conversation before the flowers became too hostile.
Her Power Over Emotions
Yuuka's ability to manipulate emotions became most apparent when she seemed to casually adjust my emotional state—I went from feeling mildly anxious to suddenly feeling relaxed and almost content. I realized too late that she was probing my mental state, subtly influencing my mood to better gauge my reactions. It was both impressive and unnerving, especially when I realized just how easily she could take control of the emotional landscape around her.
Stanley's Curiosity
Of course, my biggest concern was that my brother, Stanely, might wander into her garden at any moment. I can already imagine him tampering with her sunflowers, trying to catalog the plant life or, worse, attempting to extract some sort of specimen. While I haven't shown him around Gensokyo yet, I will need to keep him at bay—though I'm sure that if he were ever to get close, the results would be disastrous. Yuuka's sunflowers are not just gardening tools; they are extensions of her will, and meddling with them could provoke a response that none of us would want to experience firsthand.
Yuuka Kazami's Garden of the Sun is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful yet dangerous places I've encountered in Gensokyo. Her ability to manipulate sunflowers and the emotions of others is both fascinating and disconcerting. While I didn't feel any immediate threat from her, the balance of power here is fragile, and a wrong move could easily lead to disaster.
As for my brother Stanley… I will be very careful when discussing the potential for further exploration in the future. There's a fine line between scientific curiosity and sheer recklessness, and Yuuka's garden is definitely the sort of place where such recklessness could lead to extreme consequences.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Yuuka's Emotional Influence: Investigate the full extent of Yuuka's power over emotions and how it interacts with her control over the sunflowers. Does she influence the environment as a reflection of her own mood, or is the emotional manipulation a separate power?
Floral Growth Patterns: Study the growth and behavior of the sunflowers in her garden. There may be a connection between the flowers' magic and the surrounding environmental conditions—perhaps even tied to her emotional state.
Stanley's Curiosity: For my own safety, it may be worth warning Stanley about the dangers of approaching Yuuka's garden without proper precautions. Her temper, as I've learned, is best left undisturbed.
The Moriya Shrine – A Heavenly Shrine and Its Eccentric Residents
Moriya Shrine – A Place of Worship and Power, with a Strong Dose of Eccentricity
Designation: Moderate to High Threat Level (depending on interactions with the inhabitants)
The Moriya Shrine is a shrine of considerable power, located atop one of the peaks of Youkai Mountain in Gensokyo. It is dedicated primarily to Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya, two deities who, despite their rather lofty status, have a tendency to act in ways that can be… unpredictable. The shrine itself is a majestic structure with an air of both divine grandeur and practical, down-to-earth humility. Situated high in the mountains, it is constantly bathed in the purifying presence of the divine—an environment brimming with spiritual energy, the kind that can be both exhilarating and exhausting to those not accustomed to such intense concentrations of kami energy.
Despite its status as a place of worship, the shrine feels a bit… off-center at times. The residents, while powerful and divine, are not exactly traditional gods—Kanako and Suwako embody a blend of divinity and practicality, mixed with their own personal quirks and a general sense of irreverence toward formalities. Moriya Shrine is a place of worship, but it's also a place where chaos and creativity often collide.
I visited the shrine recently, intending to study its spiritual and divine properties, and though I had some interesting interactions, I found myself at odds with the more unorthodox behavior of its residents. Kanako is the chief deity, though she often seems to be preoccupied with her own grand ambitions—something that reminds me of someone back home, though not quite as intense. Suwako, on the other hand, is a much more playful figure, which immediately brought my more... sarcastic side to the forefront. Sanae Kochiya, the human shrine maiden, was a more grounded presence, though even she had her quirks.
Kanako Yasaka – The Ambitious Deity
Role: Chief deity of the Moriya Shrine, Kami of Wind and Water, a patron of prosperity and change.
Personality: Ambitious, proud, and very much interested in expansion and influence. Kanako is a deity who seeks to grow her influence in Gensokyo, often through forceful or strategic means. Her tendency to push the boundaries of what is acceptable—both socially and spiritually—makes her a compelling but difficult figure to deal with.
Kanako's presence is powerful, and it's clear she's not just any ordinary deity. From the moment I entered the shrine, I could feel the divine wind that seems to constantly swirl around her, a presence that invokes both reverence and a bit of unsettling awe. She seems to view Gensokyo as a land of opportunity, constantly seeking to expand her sphere of influence through both political means and spiritual expansion. Her ambition is palpable, and it's clear she doesn't shy away from bold decisions—including the occasional forceful conversion of other gods, or at least those she sees as potential allies. Kanako is also deeply involved in shrine politics and has a habit of wanting to be at the center of every major change in Gensokyo. Her leadership is best described as strategic and assertive, with just enough subtle manipulation to keep things interesting.
I've learned that, while she appears to be an incredibly strong deity, she doesn't always have the patience for meticulous research—my attempt to engage her in a scholarly conversation about the nature of kami and their roles in Gensokyo was met with a raised eyebrow and a swift change of topic. Frankly, I think she has bigger plans, and my questions about divine metaphysics were probably a bit too pedantic for her tastes. Still, I did manage to get some valuable insights into her goals and her relationship with the land and the spirits of Gensokyo.
Suwako Moriya – The Playful, Trickster Deity
Role: Deity of Earth, the underworld, and frogs (though the last part seems more of a personal quirk than a formal attribute).
Personality: Mischievous, carefree, and frequently prone to trickery and pranks. Suwako is the counterbalance to Kanako's more serious, ambitious approach. She has a sense of humor that can range from endearing to infuriating, depending on your perspective.
Suwako is a contradiction in the best way. She may be a deity of great power, but she doesn't take herself too seriously. I found her behavior to be eccentric, but also oddly appealing in her own way. Where Kanako seeks to expand and control, Suwako seems to be more concerned with having fun, usually at the expense of others. Pranks are a constant in her presence—everything from waterlogged shoes to subtle illusions that turn serious discussions into mischievous games. This is a good example of how the gods of Gensokyo operate: great power, tempered with personal quirks and agendas.
I had to be careful not to get swept up in her antics—during one particular interaction, she nearly turned one of my scientific experiments into a circus act. At first, I thought she was just trying to amuse herself, but then I realized her behavior was more calculated than I'd initially assumed. While she enjoys trickery, there's a method to her madness. Despite her playful nature, Suwako has a sharp intellect and a sense of wisdom hidden behind her antics. She has a way of cutting to the heart of a matter, often using humor as a means to disarm more serious discussions, which can be both frustrating and illuminating.
Sanae Kochiya – The Human Shrine Maiden
Role: Shrine maiden of the Moriya Shrine, entrusted with the spiritual upkeep and rituals of the shrine.
Personality: Diligent, devout, and at times a bit idealistic. Sanae is an earnest young woman who serves as the link between the human world and the divine powers at the shrine. Her reverence for her deities is apparent, though she occasionally shows signs of self-doubt regarding her position.
Sanae is a human, but she doesn't behave like one in all respects. She is, after all, living in a shrine run by two powerful gods, and her role as the shrine maiden is both an honor and a heavy responsibility. Sanae's devotion to her deities is obvious, but there's also a naivety in her that I find endearing. She takes her job very seriously, and her idealistic view of the world sometimes puts her at odds with the more cynical nature of others. In a way, she represents the bridge between humanity and the divine, and she takes that responsibility to heart. During my time at the shrine, Sanae was the most accessible of the residents—though she occasionally showed signs of frustration when trying to balance her human upbringing with the overwhelming demands of her spiritual duties.
Interestingly, she also seems to have a great interest in the outside world, and I had several conversations with her where she expressed curiosity about technology and human innovations. Her perspective is refreshing, but at times, she can come off as overzealous in her attempts to prove her worthiness as a shrine maiden. Still, her dedication is admirable, and I would consider her the most grounded of the shrine's residents, at least from a human perspective.
Personal Notes on the Moriya Shrine and Its Residents
Divine Energy
The divine energy in the Moriya Shrine is overwhelming, almost to the point of disorienting. It's an environment brimming with spiritual power, and as much as I wanted to study it in-depth, I had to take several breaks to recalibrate my senses. I suspect the shrine's influence on the land extends well beyond simple worship—it seems to be a wellspring of spiritual and divine energy that actively shapes the surrounding area.
Kanako's Ambition
Kanako's drive for expansion and growth is both admirable and slightly worrisome. She sees the world in terms of opportunity, and her methods to achieve her goals can be… unconventional at times. If you're ever in her presence, be prepared for strategic conversations and potential offers to join her cause.
Suwako's Mischief
Suwako is a wild card. While her pranks can be amusing at first, they can quickly become annoying, especially if you have any serious work to do. My advice: take her in stride, but never let your guard down.
Sanae's Idealism
Sanae is, at her core, a kind-hearted individual who genuinely believes in the power of her shrine and the gods she serves. I find her optimism to be both a strength and a potential weakness, but she's a valuable asset to the shrine and the human-divine relationship.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Study the Impact of Divine Energy: The spiritual and divine energy in the Moriya Shrine is powerful—more investigation into its effects on the surrounding environment would be beneficial. How does it interact with other gods and spirits in the region?
Research Kanako's Influence: Kanako's desire to expand her influence is intriguing, and I suspect her reach extends further than I've realized. More research into her methods and connections to other powerful beings would be worth pursuing.
Monitor Suwako's Pranks: If I ever find myself in the Moriya Shrine again, I'll need to keep a closer eye on Suwako's antics. She's playful, but her tricks can quickly escalate.
Follow-Up with Sanae: Her insights into the human-divine relationship are worth exploring further. A few more discussions about her beliefs and experiences could lead to some interesting data.
Sanae Kochiya – Shrine Maiden of the Moriya Shrine, Her Origins, and Rivalry with the Hakurei Shrine
Sanae Kochiya – Shrine Maiden, Human, and Bridge Between Two Worlds
Designation: Low to Moderate Threat Level (only if provoked by others)
Sanae Kochiya is a human shrine maiden who serves at the Moriya Shrine. Unlike many other shrine maidens in Gensokyo, Sanae is of a rather unique origin—she is not originally from Gensokyo. She hails from the outside world, a fact that has undoubtedly shaped her worldview and the way she carries out her duties. Sanae's origins are deeply tied to the Moriya deities, Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya, both of whom brought her to Gensokyo to serve as their shrine maiden when the Moriya Shrine was established. Her position is somewhat rare in Gensokyo, as it is influenced by external factors, namely the shrine's connection to gods who are not indigenous to the land, but rather brought with the intent of expansion.
Her role as a shrine maiden is both sacred and practical, and she takes her duties very seriously. Despite her youth, she has been tasked with overseeing the shrine's daily operations, performing rituals, and ensuring the ongoing relationship between the human world and the divine. Sanae's humanity and her position at the Moriya Shrine make her a key figure in maintaining the balance between humans and the divine powers within Gensokyo.
In addition to her shrine duties, Sanae's story is one of transformation, as she finds herself in a somewhat awkward situation—a human living among deities, with very different values from those who are rooted in Gensokyo's natural history. The conflict between the gods of the Moriya Shrine and the Hakurei Shrine, home to Reimu Hakurei, has been a point of tension that Sanae finds herself involved in, though her rivalry with Reimu is more of a subtle and lingering thing than an outright conflict.
Sanae's Origins – A Tale of Two Worlds
Sanae's backstory is both fascinating and somewhat tragic, in the way that so many stories of transition often are. She was originally from the outside world, which, in Gensokyo, means she was not born of the land's natural spiritual energies. She came from a world that was much like my own (perhaps with some key differences I'm still learning about), and her arrival in Gensokyo was facilitated by the Moriya gods, Kanako and Suwako. She has the distinction of being a rare visitor from outside, someone who might provide a fresh perspective on the world's internal spiritual matters, but at the same time, she's perpetually caught between two vastly different worldviews: the human one she was born into and the divine one she now serves.
Sanae was brought to Gensokyo to be the shrine maiden of the Moriya Shrine. I've been told that when she first arrived, she was overwhelmed by the overwhelming divine energy that infused the Moriya gods and their shrine. To her credit, she didn't balk at the challenge. Instead, she took up her role with a sense of devotion, though I suspect her youthful idealism sometimes makes it hard for her to fully grasp the implications of the gods' actions and their relationship with the other powers in Gensokyo. That being said, her drive to serve is genuine, and she does her best to maintain the shrine's daily operations and its rituals.
What struck me as most interesting, however, is that despite her human roots, Sanae seems quite fascinated by Gensokyo's supernatural world. While other humans might view youkai or gods with fear or suspicion, Sanae has an almost curious reverence for the spiritual world around her. It's this fascination that likely helps her connect with the Moriya gods, who, despite their divine power, seem quite normal to her, in their own eccentric way.
Sanae's Rivalry with Reimu Hakurei – Competition for Influence
Sanae's connection to the Moriya Shrine naturally puts her at odds with Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, another central point in Gensokyo's spiritual landscape. The two have a rivalry that is subtle, but still very much present, and it largely stems from the differences between the two shrines' philosophies and roles in Gensokyo.
Moriya Shrine vs. Hakurei Shrine
The Moriya Shrine, with its outsider gods, is primarily focused on growth and expansion, seeking to establish itself as a powerful influence in the world of both humans and youkai. In contrast, the Hakurei Shrine, under the stewardship of Reimu, is rooted in preserving balance and tradition. The Hakurei Shrine is an older institution, and Reimu herself embodies the ideals of stability and defense of Gensokyo's established ways. Reimu's connection to the Hakurei family and her unique role as a protector make her less interested in personal expansion, preferring instead to maintain the status quo.
This divergence in philosophy has created a natural tension between the two, though it's not exactly a blood feud. Rather, it's a competition for influence over the spiritual well-being of Gensokyo's inhabitants. While Kanako's efforts to spread influence may seem assertive, Reimu's reluctance to bend to outside pressures has led to a bit of a passive standoff between the two shrines.
In conversations with Sanae, I've gathered that she respects Reimu, but at the same time, there's an undercurrent of rivalry. Sanae sees Reimu as a competitor, someone who represents an older order that has difficulty adjusting to the Moriya Shrine's more forward-thinking (though sometimes forceful) approach. In Sanae's eyes, the Hakurei Shrine stands in the way of the growth of the Moriya Shrine and, by extension, her own spiritual mission. However, this rivalry is tempered by a level of personal admiration. Despite their differences, there's a shared understanding between them that they are both performing similar duties, albeit from opposing sides of the fence. I suspect that, given more time, they might form a mutual understanding—but as of now, the competition remains mildly tense.
Sanae's Role as a Shrine Maiden and Her Duties
While her rivalry with Reimu is an important part of her story, it is not the only thing that defines Sanae. As the shrine maiden of the Moriya Shrine, Sanae's duties are numerous and deeply rooted in rituals and spiritual care. She serves as the link between the Moriya gods and the human population, performing rituals, prayers, and maintaining the shrine's sanctity. She also plays a role in intermediating between the gods and the humans, though her somewhat idealistic nature sometimes makes it difficult for her to balance both sides perfectly.
I've noted that Sanae is extremely diligent in her duties, often going to great lengths to maintain the shrine and meet the needs of those who seek her guidance. She is also responsible for ensuring that the human populace remains in touch with the Moriya gods, which means she spends a great deal of time engaging with visitors and performing public rituals.
Personal Notes on Sanae Kochiya
Genuine Devotion
Sanae's devotion to her gods and her human origins is deeply genuine. Her position as a shrine maiden in a world of powerful and eccentric deities is a difficult one, yet she handles it with surprising maturity. Despite her youth and idealism, she remains steadfast in her desire to serve.
In-between Worlds
One of the most intriguing aspects of Sanae's personality is her dual identity. She is human, but she serves deities who are neither fully human nor fully native to Gensokyo. She's caught in the middle of two worlds, a bridge between the human and the divine, which gives her an unusual perspective on both. However, this also makes her feel a bit isolated, as she's not truly accepted by either side—human or god.
Rivalry with Reimu
The tension between Sanae and Reimu is one of subtle competition. Both are shrine maidens, but their shrines serve different purposes. Sanae views Reimu's adherence to tradition and her reluctance to change as a barrier to the growth of her own shrine, but this rivalry doesn't appear to be as hostile or direct as some others in Gensokyo."
Personal Reflections & Final Thoughts
While Sanae is undeniably optimistic and occasionally naive, there is something genuinely admirable about her. Despite being caught between the human and divine worlds, she has found a way to carve out her own identity as the shrine maiden of the Moriya Shrine. Her interactions with the other residents of Gensokyo—especially with Reimu—reveal that her worldview is one of deep respect for both humanity and the gods, though she struggles to reconcile the two at times.
It's clear that Sanae's life is one of conflict—between her human origins and her role as a divine servant. This constant tension adds depth to her character, but it also creates an inner dissonance that I suspect she has not fully come to terms with. It would be interesting to explore more about her personal ambitions beyond just her duties as a shrine maiden. Does she desire to make Gensokyo a better place, or is she more concerned with her personal connection to the Moriya gods and her duty to them?
Furthermore, I can't help but feel that Sanae's optimism and idealism will eventually face a trial. The balance she strives to maintain between the human world and the divine world of the Moriya gods is fragile at best. The ongoing rivalry with Reimu, although somewhat playful, hints at a deeper conflict within Gensokyo's power structure. Tradition vs. change—it's a narrative that is likely to shape Gensokyo's future in significant ways. I'll be interested to see if Sanae can maintain her idealism in the face of the harsher realities that may arise.
Sanae Kochiya is a fascinating individual, caught in the unique position of being both a human and the servant of gods from the outside world. While she may not fully understand the intricacies of Gensokyo's spiritual politics, she's still a key player in the balance between the human and divine elements of the world. Her rivalry with Reimu Hakurei, though less overt than some of the other power struggles in Gensokyo, is an important one. It represents the conflict between the traditional and the new—the old gods and the new gods, and the potential for growth versus the desire to maintain order.
Sanae's story is one of growth—as a shrine maiden, as a human, and perhaps even as a bridge between two worlds that can often be at odds with each other. I look forward to seeing where this journey leads her. However, if I were to make one prediction, it would be that the tension between her and Reimu will escalate in time, especially as Gensokyo's spiritual landscape continues to shift. Should that happen, I'll make sure to document it thoroughly.
Eientei – A Study of the Hidden Lunarian Refuge
Eientei – The Hidden Lunarian Refuge in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost
Designation: Neutral to Low Threat Level (... unless you annoy the residents, then all bets are off)
Eientei is a lunar-themed hideaway located deep within the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, a dense and mysterious wilderness in Gensokyo. The structure itself is an imposing Lunarian refuge, home to Lunarians, youkai, and other figures with ties to the moon and its celestial influences. It's no secret that Lunarians, with their advanced technologies and near-immortal lifespans, are among the most mysterious and powerful beings in Gensokyo—so much so that many have speculated whether their presence in Gensokyo is an accident or part of a larger extraterrestrial agenda. Eientei serves as the perfect example of their secluded existence, hidden from the eyes of the common folk yet still embedded within the world of youkai and humans.
The residence is not just a physical structure but a symbol of the Lunarians' estrangement from the world of Gensokyo. Their exile from the moon, and subsequent relocation to this remote domain, creates an air of solitude and secrecy that permeates every corner of Eientei. The residents—chiefly Kaguya Houraisan, Eirin Yagokoro, Reisen Udongein Inaba, and Tewi Inaba—all play crucial roles in managing this odd but somehow still vital corner of the world. Each of them brings with them a combination of Lunarian intellect, youkai cunning, and elusive mystique that both enrich the environment and add to its difficulty to comprehend.
Kaguya Houraisan – The Princess of Eternal Life:
Species: Lunarian (Exiled Princess)
Primary Role: Eientei's Ruler, Immortal Being
Kaguya Houraisan is, without a doubt, the most prominent figure in Eientei. A princess from the moon, Kaguya's presence here in Gensokyo is the result of an ancient Lunarian exile, though she appears content with her life in Eientei—perhaps even too content. Her immortality, granted by the Hourai Elixir, makes her an enigmatic and frustrating subject for study. Kaguya cannot die under normal circumstances, which has led to an incredibly cynical worldview, even as she continues to engage with the world around her in seemingly whimsical or aloof ways.
Kaguya's past is tied to the legendary tale of the Bamboo Cutter—a story that connects her to ancient, almost mythological elements of Japanese folklore. From what I've gathered, she was discovered as a child in a bamboo stalk by the Bamboo Cutter and raised on Earth before being revealed to be a Lunarian princess. Her subsequent return to the moon and exile to Gensokyo were the result of events surrounding her immortality and her inability to fit into the rigid structure of Lunarian society. In the centuries since, she has grown disillusioned with life and her unchanging existence.
Kaguya's powers are not to be underestimated. She has control over elixirs, moon-related magic, and is also able to manipulate time to a limited degree. However, her greatest ability is the Hourai Elixir, which grants her immortality—making her a being beyond mortal comprehension. Despite her seemingly carefree nature, it is clear that she's intellectually sharp and dangerous when provoked.
Personal Notes: Kaguya is an odd one. In our brief encounter, I was struck by her detached demeanor, as though the centuries of immortality have dulled her emotional responses. She seemed largely apathetic to my research, and I've come to suspect that immortality while granting eternal youth, might also come with a kind of emotional stagnation. It's almost as if she's bored by the world and everything in it—what's the point of learning about Gensokyo when you've seen it all? Still, there's more to her than meets the eye. I get the impression she's playing a role, pretending to be aloof and uninterested while watching me (and everyone else) from behind her serene mask.
Her ability to manipulate elixirs could be worth researching. Is it chemical? Mystical? Or both? A genuine elixir of immortality might hold far-reaching implications for human biology, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious about its potential uses… though I'd never ask her for a sample, of course.
Eirin Yagokoro – The Genius Pharmacist
Species: Lunarian (Physician, Alchemist)
Primary Role: Head of Medical Research, Alchemist, Former Moon Sage
Eirin Yagokoro is the resident pharmacist and scientific mind of Eientei. A former Lunarian sage and one of the most brilliant minds in Gensokyo, Eirin is a mixture of calculated intellect and calm pragmatism. While Kaguya is often aloof and whimsical, Eirin is extremely serious and methodical, almost to the point of being cold. She is responsible for concocting the Hourai Elixir, which granted Kaguya her immortality, as well as various other elixirs and potions that have practical, if not dangerous, uses in Gensokyo.
Eirin's knowledge of medicine and alchemy far surpasses what most of the residents of Gensokyo understand. Her ability to create potent, reality-altering potions has made her an invaluable member of Eientei, though she's not without her own ethical concerns. Eirin is one of those rare figures whose scientific pursuits seem to tread the fine line between medical marvels and unnatural manipulation.
Personal Notes: Eirin's intellect is daunting. During a brief conversation, I tried to discuss an experiment involving alchemy and alchemy's relationship with physics, only to find myself outmatched on nearly every level. Her ability to apply ancient Lunarian alchemy alongside modern science is something I've never encountered before. I've been trying to make sense of some of her formulas, but even after weeks of study, I can't understand some of the logic behind them. She has clearly mastered fields that I can barely comprehend, and that alone is both fascinating and terrifying.
The idea of creating potions that can change reality is a dangerous one. In fact, Eirin's work could be considered as much philosophy as science. The potential implications for human biology and psychology would be extraordinary. If she were to choose to share her knowledge, there's no telling how it could shape the future of Gensokyo—or the world beyond.
Reisen Udongein Inaba – The Lunar Rabbit with a Mysterious Past
Species: Lunar Rabbit (Youkai Rabbit)
Primary Role: Former Lunarian Soldier, Medic, Resident of Eientei
Reisen Udongein Inaba is another resident of Eientei, though unlike her fellow youkai rabbit, Tewi Inaba, Reisen's background is far more tragic and complex. Originally from Lunar origins, Reisen was once a Lunarian soldier, though her life on the moon took a sharp turn after the Lunar War. It is unclear whether she defected or was sent to Gensokyo for some other purpose, but she now resides in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, where she serves as one of the primary caregivers for Eientei, alongside Eirin Yagokoro and Kaguya Houraisan.
Reisen's abilities are tied to her Lunarian heritage and her connection to madness. She is capable of manipulating mental states and emotions, particularly through the use of her lunatic gaze—an ability that induces psychological effects, including hallucinations and mind control. While her powers are formidable, they are not nearly as physically overwhelming as those of the Lunarians, but rather, they rely on psychological manipulation, making her a dangerous adversary if you underestimate her.
Unlike Tewi, who often revels in her mischief, Reisen is a more reserved and thoughtful individual, haunted by the trauma of her past. She is generally calm and collected, though the weight of her past experiences sometimes comes through in her interactions. Reisen's life in Gensokyo has given her a sense of purpose and stability, and she works tirelessly alongside Eirin to keep Eientei running smoothly.
Personal Notes: Reisen Udongein Inaba is a deeply intriguing subject—her psychological abilities, particularly her Lunatic Gaze, allow her to manipulate the mental states of others by inducing vivid hallucinations and emotional instability. While she prefers non-lethal methods, her powers can be devastating, leaving even the strongest-willed individuals vulnerable to mental manipulation. Her background as a Lunarian soldier in the Lunar War explains her preference for subduing opponents without physical harm, though the psychological toll of her past is evident in her reserved demeanor. Reisen's enhanced agility and intelligence make her an excellent tactician, relying on speed and stealth rather than brute force. Despite her stoic and often distant nature, there is a clear sense of duty and empathy in her role as a caregiver at Eientei, and her internal struggle with her past provides an interesting psychological dimension to her character.
Eientei is, to put it mildly, a fascinating enigma. It is a place where the ancient powers of the moon, immortality, alchemy, and youkai trickery converge. Studying the residents—Kaguya, Eirin, and Tewi—will no doubt provide plenty of scientific and philosophical challenges. As I spend more time here, I hope to learn more about the Lunarian influence on Gensokyo and whether their presence in this world is truly an accident—or if there are larger cosmic forces at work.
It is becoming increasingly clear that Eientei is more than just a secluded laboratory; it is a microcosm of Gensokyo's deepest mysteries, and its residents hold knowledge that could alter my entire understanding of this world.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Lunarian Exile: Study the origins of Kaguya's exile and its long-term implications for the Lunarian presence in Gensokyo. Why were they exiled, and what does this mean for the future?
Alchemy and Elixirs: Eirin's work in alchemy could lead to major breakthroughs in both biomedical research and philosophical ethics. What can I learn from her methods?
Tewi's Luck Manipulation: Investigate Tewi's ability to alter luck and determine whether it is a true manipulation of probability or some other force entirely.
The Bamboo Forest of the Lost and Tewi Inaba – Tricksters, Traps, and Tangled Paths
The Bamboo Forest of the Lost – Gensokyo's Most Deceptive Wilderness
Designation: Moderate Threat Level (Mostly due to confusion, disorientation, and Tewi's pranks)
The Bamboo Forest of the Lost is one of Gensokyo's most infamous and mysterious locations. As the name suggests, this forest is notorious for its confounding pathways that seem to lead travelers in circles or deeper into the wilderness, often with no clear way out. Even for someone with my extensive knowledge of spatial theory, the Bamboo Forest defies conventional understanding. The forest is filled with dense bamboo groves, mist, and an overwhelming sense of isolation, making it a perfect habitat for youkai and reclusive creatures, including the inhabitants of Eientei—Kaguya Houraisan, Eirin Yagokoro, Reisen Udongein Inaba, and most notably, Tewi Inaba.
One would think that a forest of this nature, so thick and full of disorienting paths, would only pose a physical challenge, but it is the psychological disarray that proves the most dangerous. The forest is a place where time seems to warp, and distance becomes subjective. What looks like a small walk through the trees can stretch for hours, and some have even reported that once they've entered, they never truly feel like they leave. There's a magical quality to the bamboo, almost as if it's watching, guiding—or perhaps trapping—those who venture too deep.
This environment is the perfect habitat for Tewi Inaba, the youkai rabbit who resides in Eientei. Tewi seems to take great delight in setting up traps, misleading travelers, and generally causing chaos with her luck-manipulating abilities. It is not just that she can alter luck to bring misfortune to others—it's her expertise in psychological games that makes her truly dangerous. Tewi's pranks are not merely inconveniences; they are designed to frustrate, disorient, and confuse.
Tewi Inaba – The Trickster Rabbit and Her Pranks
Species: Youkai Rabbit
Primary Role: Provider of Luck (Good or Bad, Depending on Her Mood), Trickster, Harbinger of Misfortune
Tewi Inaba, despite her small and unassuming appearance, is one of the most dangerous tricksters in Gensokyo. She is a youkai rabbit with the unique ability to manipulate luck—or, more accurately, to adjust the probability of certain events happening in her favor, typically to the detriment of those around her. Her true power lies in her ability to influence fortune, making seemingly random events turn in her favor, or causing the unluckiest circumstances for those she targets. And when you're dealing with a youkai with that much power, you begin to see that it's not just about causing misfortune—it's about causing absolute frustration.
Tewi thrives on mischief, chaos, and the endless entertainment she derives from her pranks. She does not need to strike directly; her pranks and luck manipulation are often indirect, using psychological warfare to make a fool of those she targets. I've had the misfortune of being one of her victims on more than one occasion, and every time I think I've learned my lesson, she finds a new way to trap me.
I've had enough of Tewi's pranks. Enough! The first time I ventured into the Bamboo Forest of the Lost to gather research samples, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on the spatial oddities of the area. Well, that was a mistake. I was simply trying to document some of the unique flora in the area when suddenly, the ground beneath me shifted—literally. One minute I was standing by a cluster of bamboo, and the next, I was somehow back at the same spot two hours later—only now the bamboo seemed slightly taller and the light was dimmer. I can only assume this was her handiwork, considering the piles of bamboo sticks that were strategically placed in odd patterns (probably some sort of trap) just before my repeated disorientation.
After that, I tried to leave—only to find myself entrapped by a simple rope snare, cleverly hidden under the very bamboo I'd been studying. The audacity! It took me far too long to free myself, and by the time I did, the sun was setting—yet it felt like only minutes had passed. By the time I regained my bearings, I found I had wandered in a circle so tight that I was practically back where I started.
Tewi seems to have a way of using the forest itself as her playground, and her traps are always designed with one goal in mind: frustration. I don't think I've ever met anyone who can make me feel so utterly helpless—and I've been to Gravity Falls and dealt with things like Gremlobots and Ghosts of the Underworld, for heaven's sake! She's always one step ahead, and it's always just when I think I'm safe that she pulls the rug out from under me.
Tewi's Psychological Warfare and Her Influence on Luck
Luck Manipulation
Tewi's ability to influence luck is not something that can easily be measured with typical scientific equipment. Her abilities seem to function on a probability curve, subtly skewing the chances of certain outcomes to make them unfavorable. For example, while trying to navigate the Bamboo Forest, it wasn't that I encountered an outright dangerous obstacle—no, instead, it was a series of annoying and trivial mishaps: twisted ankles, broken equipment, and objects falling when I least expected it. These were not life-threatening, but they wasted time and left me feeling frustrated.
Psychological Impact
The true danger of Tewi's pranks is how mentally exhausting they can be. It's not just the practical effects of her luck manipulation; it's the emotional toll she takes on those she targets. Her pranks aren't aimed at immediate physical harm, but at dismantling your focus and morale. Her pranks cause a cascade of small failures that add up, making you feel like you're losing control, and that's when she gets you: when you're so distracted by her antics that you forget what you're trying to do in the first place.
I spent the better part of an afternoon attempting to find a specific type of flower for a botanical study I was conducting (I won't even get into the details of that—it was important, okay?), and guess what happened? Tewi must've been watching me the entire time because as I reached for the flower, she cleverly dropped a pebble into a nearby bamboo stalk, making a sound that startled me just enough to lose my balance, fall into a patch of nettles, and send the flower into the wind.
I'm done.
She's good at what she does, I'll give her that. Her attention to detail is impressive; it's as if she's anticipating every move I make. And yet, I can't help but wonder: Is it all for fun, or is there a deeper purpose to her endless pranks? Could there be more to her ability to manipulate luck than simply providing amusement? I've noticed she has a way of using the luck of others to her advantage, sometimes guiding things in subtle ways that have real consequences.
The Bamboo Forest of the Lost and Tewi Inaba is a unique case study in luck manipulation and psychological warfare. The forest itself is a place of confusion and mental disarray, while Tewi is its perfect instigator. Her tricks are not meant to harm—no, they're meant to make you doubt your own sense of reality.
If you ever find yourself in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, my advice is simple: don't take anything at face value. Every path might loop you back to where you started, every sound could be a trap, and every piece of bamboo might hide a misfortune waiting to happen. And above all, don't let Tewi see you as an easy target—she can make you feel like you're losing your mind, and she'll do it just because she can.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Luck Manipulation: Further research into how Tewi's luck manipulation works. Is it truly random, or is there an underlying pattern to her pranks? Can I replicate or counter her ability with my own understanding of probability?
Forest's Spatial Distortion: Continue studying the spatial anomalies of the Bamboo Forest. There's more to this forest than meets the eye, and I suspect it's linked to ancient youkai magic or some form of spiritual disturbance.
Tewi's Role: Try to determine whether Tewi's pranks are part of a larger strategy. Is she just messing with people for fun, or is there something more at stake? I have a feeling she's playing a game I'm not fully aware of yet.
Fujiwara no Mokou – The Fire-Wielding Immortal and Her Rivalry with Kaguya
Fujiwara no Mokou – The Immortal Phoenix and Her Rivalry with Kaguya Houraisan
Species: Human (Immortal)
Primary Role: Fire-Wielder, Immortal, Former Mortal Woman with a Phoenix's Power
Designation: Low Threat Level (when not provoked; extremely volatile when triggered)
Fujiwara no Mokou is an immortal human with a fascinating—and often tragic—background. As a youkai, she possesses immortality due to her connection to the mythical Phoenix, the source of her regeneration powers and control over fire. Mokou has an extensive history that intertwines with Kaguya Houraisan, the exiled Lunarian princess of Eientei. Their rivalry is one of the most notable and longstanding conflicts in Gensokyo's history, though fortunately, it has evolved into something more distantly tolerable and mutually respectful (if you can call it that) over time.
The two first clashed over Mokou's immortality, which was a curse rather than a gift in her eyes. Having obtained her immortality through the Hourai Elixir, Mokou's existence is an endless cycle of regeneration, which she initially found to be a cruel punishment, as it meant she was forever separated from the mortal world and those she loved. Her path to immortality was entangled with the manipulative schemes of Kaguya, who, ironically, was the one who gave Mokou the very elixir that granted her eternal life.
Mokou's Background and Abilities
Mokou's story begins with the tragic tale of her family's death, which led her to seek out the Hourai Elixir, a powerful potion that grants immortality. However, upon obtaining it, Mokou found that the gift of eternal life came at an incredibly high price—the loss of those she cared about, as they aged and died around her while she remained unchanged. This bitter gift turned Mokou into a reclusive, angry woman who wandered the world in search of a way to make sense of her endless existence.
Her relationship with Kaguya Houraisan is at the heart of her story. Kaguya, having been the one who introduced Mokou to the Hourai Elixir, became the source of her immense resentment. Mokou blamed Kaguya for cursing her with immortality, and their relationship has remained strained ever since. The rivalry between the two is legendary, with Mokou's anger often directed at Kaguya for giving her a gift that she now views as a curse.
Mokou's powers are centered around her fire manipulation abilities, which she inherited from the Phoenix. Her flames are intense and deadly, capable of incinerating nearly anything in their path. Her mastery of fire, combined with her immortality, makes her a dangerous adversary in combat. Her regeneration is so potent that she cannot be killed by conventional means, as any wound inflicted upon her will heal rapidly, allowing her to rise again from death like a phoenix from the ashes. Mokou is also known to carry a bow and arrows, using them as both a weapon and a symbolic gesture of her lost humanity.
Personal Notes on Her Rivalry with Kaguya
Now, this is where things get tricky. Mokou and Kaguya's rivalry is one of the most volatile in Gensokyo, and honestly, the emotional baggage between them is hard to ignore. Their first clashes were driven by pure animosity—Mokou's desire for revenge against Kaguya, and Kaguya's almost nonchalant disregard for Mokou's suffering. Over time, however, the rivalry has cooled into something more apathetic and tolerant—at least on the surface.
I've observed their interactions, and it's clear that both are now reluctantly comfortable with each other's presence, though their old tensions can flare up at the slightest provocation. During my most recent trip to Eientei, I had the opportunity to observe them both in a shared environment. To my surprise, there were no violent outbursts—no blazing flames from Mokou or the cold, haughty dismissal from Kaguya. Instead, the two women exchanged a few sarcastic comments, made a couple of subtle jabs, and then went about their day.
Their relationship has transformed from outright hatred to a curious form of mutual respect. I think both Mokou and Kaguya have come to accept that their rivalry is essentially a product of their respective immortalities—one trapped in an endless loop of regeneration, the other exiled from the moon, with both women essentially outliving everyone else around them. Their grudging tolerance of each other might not be the warmth of friendship, but it is better than the vicious conflict they once shared.
Still, I can't help but wonder—do they truly get along now, or is this just the calm before the storm?
Mokou's Behavioral Patterns
Stoic and Detached
Despite her fiery powers and tragic backstory, Mokou is generally a stoic individual. Her grief over losing her humanity and the ability to connect with others has shaped her personality into one of reserved emotionality. She is slow to trust others and is generally apathetic toward anything that doesn't directly affect her.
Occasional Explosions of Rage
Mokou's temper, while more controlled than in the past, can still flare up when provoked—especially if Kaguya is involved. I've witnessed her calmly talking to others one moment, and then, in an instant, explode with rage when someone mentions Kaguya's name in a derogatory way. While Mokou may have matured over time, there's still a deep well of resentment that, I suspect, will never fully be extinguished.
Loyalty to Those She Cares About
On the rare occasions when Mokou does allow someone to get close, she demonstrates a surprising loyalty. Her interactions with the inhabitants of Eientei, especially Tewi Inaba, reveal that while she is detached from most, she values the few who have earned her trust.
Personal Observations on Her Immortality
Mokou's immortality is perhaps the most tragic aspect of her character. Unlike Kaguya, whose immortality was a deliberate choice and a gift, Mokou's immortality is a curse—an endless reminder of everything she has lost. Her pain is one of loneliness and regret, trapped in a world where time has passed her by and everyone she once knew is now gone. The Phoenix that grants her power is a cruel metaphor for this endless cycle of death and rebirth.
Her fire powers, which should be a blessing, are just another reminder of her isolation. The flames she commands are not only destructive but are often a symbol of her inner rage—a rage she can never truly escape. Mokou's flames are tied to her emotions, and when she is particularly angry or hurt, they become more intense. I've learned to avoid her when she's upset—as difficult as that is, since her emotional state is often a volatile cocktail of grief, anger, and resentment.
Fujiwara no Mokou is, at her core, a tragic figure—an immortal woman cursed by a gift that she never wanted. Her relationship with Kaguya is at the heart of her emotional turmoil, and though they have reached a fragile truce, it's clear that neither has fully forgiven the other for the past. Mokou is far more than just a fire-wielding immortal; she is a woman whose very existence is marked by loss and endless cycles of rebirth.
While her rivalry with Kaguya has cooled to the point of distant tolerance, there's no denying that the scars of their shared past remain. Mokou's bitterness might never fade, but I believe she's come to accept that immortality—whether she likes it or not—has changed her into something far more complicated than the woman she once was.
Recommendations for Future Study:
Phoenix Flames and Regeneration: Mokou's fire manipulation and immortality are closely tied to her Phoenix-like abilities. Investigating how her regenerative powers interact with her flames could shed light on both her abilities and the nature of immortality itself.
Emotional Impact of Immortality: How does Mokou cope with eternal life and the emotional toll it takes? Studying the psychological effects of immortality on someone who has lost everything could yield fascinating insights into the human psyche.
Kaguya-Mokou Relationship Dynamics: Continue observing the dynamic between Kaguya and Mokou. Is their current truce sustainable, or will old grudges surface again?

"Phew…" Ford put his journal away and sipped some tea.
"You know, you're always welcome here in case you want to come back." Reimu said.
"I know." Ford smiled as he looked up at the sky. "I wonder what other worlds I should study next…"
"Any world in particular you're curious about?"
"Well, I've heard that the princess of Hyrule has a knack for science… perhaps we could explore Hyrule together."
