Steve woke up that morning pretty early. He looked over at his sleeping husband and smiled. He still didn't know how he ended up marrying his best friend. He got up and started throwing on some running clothes before going to the kitchen where he found Nat and Sam talking.
"Good Morning," Steve said.
"Morning," Nat said.
"Ready for the run?" Sam asked.
"Yes, let's go," Sam said before the two left.
When they came back an hour later, they both took a shower and then went to the kitchen, where everyone was getting their breakfasts together.
"Skye not up yet?" Steve asked.
"Haven't seen her," Nat said.
Steve went and knocked on Skye's bedroom door. She had therapy in an hour so she needed to be up.
Skye groaned.
"Skye. Come on time to get up. You've got therapy in an hour," Steve said.
"I don't feel well," Skye said.
Steve opened the door and went into the room.
"What's wrong?" Steve asked.
"Headache," Skye said from under the blankets
Steve pulled the blankets off her head and felt her forehead. "You're not warm. You probably just need to eat something."
Skye groaned.
"Come on, breakfast is ready. If you're still not feeling better after eating we can talk about it," Steve said.
Skye sighed and dragged herself out of bed and to the kitchen.
"Hey, you look exhausted," Bucky said when he saw her.
"Yeah. Haven't been sleeping well this last week," Skye said.
"Is that why you have a headache?" Steve asked.
"Probably," Skye said as she sat at the table
"You're not staying up late on purpose are you?" Bucky asked as he put a bowl of her favorite cereal and fruit on the table in front of her.
"No. I fall asleep but have these really vivid nightmares," Skye said.
"About what?" Steve asked
"Various things," Skye said as she picked up her spoon.
They could talk about it more later Steve and Bucky let her eat. Once she was done eating she got up and put her dishes in the dishwasher.
"You feeling any better?" Steve asked.
"Not really," Skye said. "But I can go to therapy. Can't promise I won't fall asleep though."
"Go back to bed, I'll call your therapist and reschedule," Bucky said.
Skye let out a breath of relief and went and crawled into bed. Harley who had been following her around climbed up on the bed with her and curled into her.
Skye pet her dog and closed her eyes slowly drifting to sleep.
A couple of hours later she woke up with a scream. Harley started to bark.
Steve having heard the scream ran to her room and opened the door to find her sitting on her bed sobbing.
"Hey, it's okay. You're safe," Steve said as he went and sat next to her wrapping his arms around her.
Skye sobbed into him Harley was still barking and growling.
Steve looked in the direction Harley was barking.
"Hey boy, do you see something we can't?" Steve asked.
Harley calmed down and laid down again.
Steve looked at Skye. "What was the nightmare about?"
"Just stupid things," Skye mumbled.
"No. If it is waking you up screaming. It's not stupid," Steve said.
"Hydra getting me and turning me against you," Skye said softly looking down.
"Hey," Steve said softly. "Look at me."
Skye looked at him.
Steve gently wiped away the few stray tears. "If Hydra was ever to get you. No one here would stop until we had you back here. And you have the strongest mind. Wanda can't even get in. No one would be able to manipulate your mind to do anything you don't want to."
Skye nodded a little.
"Hey, you're safe here. No one is getting into the compound," Steve said.
Skye nodded a little.
"Why don't you lay down and close your eyes? I'll sit in the chair and keep a watch out so you can okay?" Steve asked.
Skye nodded and laid back down closing her eyes.
Steve moved to the chair and pulled out his phone looking over some paperwork he had to do as his little girl slept.
A couple of days later. The compound was awoken by an alarm they had never heard at four. Everyone jumped out of bed and went into the kitchen
"F.R.I.D.A.Y. Turn it off," Tony ordered.
The alarm was silenced.
"Why did you set that off?" Tony asked looking around.
All that came out of the AI system was a whirring noise.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y," Tony said again.
The alarm started again.
Tony took out his phone and turned the AI system offline.
"What is going on Tony?" Steve asked.
"That alarm means someone got into the compound that shouldn't be here," Tony said looking around and doing a head count. "We are missing someone."
Everyone looked around.
"Skye, where is Skye," Steve said.
Bucky went to her room and checked but she wasn't there. And her phone was on the floor. Bucky picked up her phone and brought it out. "She's not here. And her phone was on the floor."
"Damn it," Steve said.
"What is it?" Nat asked.
"Skye has been having nightmares of Hydra getting her and turning her against us," Steve said.
"Nightmares. They are not real," Sam said.
"Hydra could have found a way to get into her brain from outside of here," Wanda said.
"You couldn't even get into her brain," Steve said to Wanda.
"While she was awake. If they got into dreams. When she is the most vulnerable," Wanda said.
"Okay. But getting into her dreams might be one thing. But getting into the compound through the security system we have in place," Nat said.
"Skye would know how to screw the settings to get out of here.," Tony said. "She's smarter than any of us knew about tech."
"But why would she do that?" Steve asked
"Stevie," Bucky said. "If Hydra has gotten into her head. They could have made her do it."
"No. No. Hydra does NOT have my daughter," Steve said his face a mix of anger, fear, and sadness.
Bucky went over to him, took both of his wrists and squeezed. "We are going to find her."
"You of all people know why Hydra can make people do," Steve said his voice cracking.
"I know," Bucky said. "I don't like the thoughts of what they might be doing to her. But losing it now. While she is out there. Isn't going to help her," Bucky said.
Tony updated the AI system and made sure everything looked good before turning it back on.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y," Tony said.
"Good morning Mr. Stark," F.R.I.D.A.Y said.
"What is the last thing in your memory?" Tony asked.
The room was silent for a moment before F.R.I.D.A.Y. spoke. "At three am this morning Skyler turned me off."
"Where was she when she turned you off?" Nat asked.
"In her bedroom," F.R.I.D.A.Y. said.
"Do you have footage of this F.R.I.D.A.Y," Nat asked.
Her phone went off with a buzz and Nat took her phone out of her pocket and watched the footage that the AI had sent her.
They saw Skye telling the machine to turn off.
"But how did the system turn back on and sound the alarm?" Steve asked.
"Fail-safe," Tony said. "If the system is offline for over an hour it turns back on and sounds the alarm."
"Okay. We need to find Skye," Bucky said. "How this happened doesn't matter. What matters is we find her."
Everyone agreed and started doing what they needed to, to find her.
