Brisbane, February 2017
Three months had flown by since Bingo's arrival, and the Heeler household buzzed with a warm sense of family life. Biscuit, now five years old and filled with energy, could hardly contain his excitement; today was the day he had been eagerly waiting for. His parents had promised him he could start playing a sport, and he was about to discover the world of field hockey.
On a sunny Saturday morning, Bandit and Chili exchanged knowing smiles as they set up a surprise for Biscuit. In the living room sat a brand-new hockey stick, shin guards, and a bright jersey displaying Biscuit's name, proudly arranged on the couch.
"Are you ready for this?" Bandit asked, trying to contain his enthusiasm as he glanced at Chili.
"I can't wait to see his reaction! I know he's going to love this," Chili replied, her heart fluttering with anticipation.
Biscuit was in the playroom, absorbed in his toys, completely unaware of the surprises waiting for him. Bandit called out, "Hey, Biscuit! Come here for a second!"
Biscuit rushed into the room, curiosity lighting up his face. "What is it, Dad?"
Bandit pointed at the couch, and Biscuit's eyes went wide with astonishment. "Whoa! Is that for me?" he exclaimed, excitement radiating from him.
"Absolutely!" Chili said, clapping her hands with delight. "We know how much you love field hockey, and we want you to join a team. There's a youth training today!"
Biscuit's heart raced with excitement, but as the realization sank in, a flicker of anxiety crossed his face. "A training session? What if I'm not good enough?"
Bandit knelt beside him, sensing Biscuit's worry. "It's okay, buddy. Everyone has to start somewhere, and you have us to help you. Just remember, it's about having fun and making new friends."
Taking a deep breath, Biscuit managed a nod. "Okay, I'll try."
Once they gathered the gear, Bandit helped Biscuit put on his new shin guards, fastening everything snugly while Chili beamed with pride.
With Bluey happily watching cartoons in the background, Chili made sure Biscuit was ready. "Are you excited to show everyone how you play?"
"Yes!" Biscuit shouted, his earlier anxiety fading as excitement took over.
As they arrived at the training field, Biscuit felt a mix of emotions swirling inside him. The lively atmosphere buzzed with the sounds of kids running around, practicing their skills, yet a hint of nerves crept back in as he took it all in.
"Remember, we're just going to watch at first, and then you can join in," Bandit reassured, noticing the slight worry etched on Biscuit's face.
When they stepped onto the field, Biscuit spotted a pair of red merle Border Collies nearby. The twins showcased stunning fur patterns—one with a predominantly red coat with white patches and the other sporting white fur with red patches. Their playful energy was infectious, and Biscuit felt drawn to them.
"Hey! I'm Lucas!" exclaimed one of the twins, bounding toward Biscuit, his thick Dutch accent ringing clearly through the air.
"And I'm Roy!" the other said, matching his brother's enthusiasm. "You're new, right?"
Biscuit nodded shyly. "Uh, yeah. I'm Biscuit."
"Awesome! Welcome to the team!" Lucas exclaimed, flashing a friendly grin. "You're going to have a blast!"
The two brothers began chatting with Biscuit, occasionally slipping into Dutch while making plans on the field, their playful tones creating a cheerful energy in the air.
"Hey, Roy, denk je dat Biscuit met ons kan spelen?" Lucas asked, nudging his brother.
"Ja! Hij is cool!" Roy replied in perfect sync, with their strong accents adding a unique flair to their friendly banter.
Biscuit listened closely, intrigued but not fully grasping their conversation. He admired the bond the twins had and felt excited about being included. "What do you guys like most about playing?" he asked, eager to learn.
"We love playing defense!" Lucas said, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Good defenders keep everyone safe and create opportunities for the team!"
"Exactly! We might not score goals, but protecting our teammates feels like winning too," Roy agreed, wagging his tail excitedly.
Biscuit's tail started to wag as he felt a new sense of belonging. "I want to be really good at hockey like you guys!" he declared, his excitement bubbling over.
"You'll be awesome," Lucas encouraged, giving Biscuit a friendly nudge. "Just remember to have fun! And if you want to play defense, we can show you the ropes!"
Biscuit's nerves began to ease with their encouragement, and he felt inspired. The fear of being the new kid started to dissipate as he engaged in conversation with Lucas and Roy.
As practice began, the coaches led everyone through basic drills, teaching them how to hold their sticks, dribble, and pass. Biscuit watched intently, copying their movements as best as he could, trying to master the techniques.
"Don't worry if it feels a bit tricky at first," Roy said, noticing the focus on Biscuit's face. "We've all been there. Just keep practicing every week, and you'll improve!"
Eventually, the coach called everyone over and announced, "Today, we'll play a mini-game! Who's excited?"
Biscuit's heart raced with a mix of excitement and hesitation. What if he couldn't keep up? Sensing his son's apprehension, Bandit leaned down to Biscuit's level. "Hey, buddy. It's just a game. Focus on having fun. You'll do great, I promise."
Drawing strength from the support of his dad and his new friends, Biscuit took a deep breath. "Okay, I'm ready!" he said, trying to sound more confident than he felt.
As the mini-game unfolded, Biscuit was initially hesitant, observing the other players darting around with determination. Lucas and Roy played as defenders, quickly intercepting passes and preventing goals.
"Come on, Biscuit! Join us!" Lucas urged, running back and forth.
Encouraged by Lucas's friendly shout, Biscuit finally shuffled forward, unsure of where he was meant to be. Suddenly, a swift shot was taken toward the goal—a net that wasn't even set up yet—but he instinctively moved, trying to block it like he had seen in practice.
His first attempt was clumsy, and he stumbled, but the moment reinvigorated Biscuit. "I can do this!" he shouted.
His enthusiasm reignited and, for a brief moment, he forgot his nerves. As the game continued, he began to feel a sense of accomplishment just by being involved, cheering on his teammates and celebrating their successes.
After a few runs back and forth, Bandit noticed Biscuit beginning to find his rhythm, actively participating and having fun. He approached the sidelines, giving his son an encouraging nod.
As the game wound down, the coaches called everyone back in. "Great job today, everyone! You all really showed teamwork! We'll see you next week for more practice."
Biscuit's heart raced with happiness. He couldn't believe how fun it had been! As the kids ran around, talking animatedly about their plays and experiences, Biscuit felt a true sense of friendship beginning to blossom with Lucas and Roy.
"Next week, we'll show you some moves to help you score, Biscuit," Roy said, wagging his tail.
"Yeah! And maybe we'll find out which positions we're best at!" Lucas added as the three of them gathered their gear.
As they walked toward the parking lot, Biscuit felt grateful for the friends he had made. The anticipation of returning next week excited him, and he couldn't wait to keep improving.
"Hey, Biscuit! Want to be best friends?" Lucas suddenly asked with a broad grin.
"Of course! Yes!" Biscuit replied, his happiness bubbling over.
"Awesome! Let's make sure to hang out more, okay?" Roy chirped.
With the new friendships forming around him, Biscuit knew he had found joy in both the sport and the bonds he was creating with his teammates. As they all promised to meet again next week, he felt a warm sense of belonging that lit up his heart.
"See you guys next weekend!" Biscuit called as they parted ways, feeling optimistic about the future.
As Biscuit headed home, he thought about how exciting it was to be part of a team. With the connection he had established with Lucas and Roy, along with the support of his family, Biscuit felt ready to embrace whatever came next—whether on the field or off.
As they made their way home, Biscuit found himself reflecting on the day's events and the camaraderie he'd formed with Lucas and Roy. Excitement bubbled in his chest at the thought of becoming great friends.
The Following Saturday – Hockey Field
Early morning sunshine warmed the field as Biscuit, Lucas, and Roy arrived for another training session. Excitement danced in the air, and Biscuit felt his adrenaline surge at the thought of another day of fun and friendship.
"Hey, Biscuit! Ready to show off your skills today?" Lucas greeted him enthusiastically, his eyes bright with anticipation.
"Yeah! I can't wait!" Biscuit replied, his tail wagging vigorously as he carried his new hockey stick.
As the kids gathered and began warming up, they started chatting. Biscuit noticed Lucas and Roy standing together, animatedly discussing their plays from last week.
"Hey, Roy! Let's practice that move we talked about!" Lucas exclaimed, demonstrating a quick dribble.
"Ja, dat is een goed idee! We moeten het nog een keer proberen!" Roy replied, seamlessly slipping into Dutch for a moment.
Biscuit watched with curiosity, feeling slightly left out but eager to engage. "What does that mean?" he asked, tilting his head.
"Oh! Sorry! We were just saying it's a good idea to practice," Lucas explained, a sheepish grin on his face. "We sometimes forget when we get excited!"
"Yeah, our mom speaks to us in Dutch all the time," Roy added. "But we're comfortable with English too, thanks to our dad! He's from Brisbane."
Biscuit's ears perked up in interest. "Really? You guys have such cool accents! How long did you live in the Netherlands?"
Roy's eyes lit up as he began to share. "We lived there for our whole lives until a couple of months ago, right before the summer holiday began. Our family wanted to start a new adventure here—as you saw, we're adjusting to everything!"
Lucas chimed in, "Yeah! Our parents thought moving to Australia would be a great opportunity for us. We've already made some friends at the hockey field, and we can't wait to start school at Glass Mountain Elementary soon!"
"That's amazing!" Biscuit exclaimed, feeling a newfound connection with his friends. "That's the same school I go to!"
"Really? That's awesome!" Lucas replied, tail wagging in excitement. "We're looking forward to it! Have you been there long?"
"Yeah! I love it there. The teachers are nice, and there's a great playground!" Biscuit shared, his enthusiasm infectious.
The conversation flowed easily as they practiced drills together, and Biscuit learned more about their experiences adapting to life in Brisbane. They each shared their favorite things about Australia, with Lucas and Roy delighting Biscuit with stories of their adventures so far.
"Wait until you see the beach!" Roy said, eyes wide with excitement. "We went there last week, and it was like the biggest sandpit ever!"
"Yeah! I can't believe you can play in water and sand!" Lucas added, laughing. "It was so different from what we had in the Netherlands."
As they continued their training, Biscuit felt closer to Lucas and Roy, thrilled to learn about their lives and experiences. Their friendship was blossoming, and he appreciated the ways they encouraged one another, sharing tips and helping each other improve.
Once practice wrapped up, the coach called everyone together. "Great job today, team! Remember to practice your stickhandling! See you all next week!"
"Can we all hang out again soon?" Biscuit asked eagerly, already thinking about more fun times with his friends.
"Definitely! Maybe we can come over to your place," Roy suggested, wagging his tail excitedly.
"Yeah! We'd love to!" Lucas agreed, his voice bright with enthusiasm.
As they walked back to their cars, Biscuit felt grateful for the friends he had made through the team. He was thrilled to know that he would be going to the same school as Lucas and Roy.
"Alright! Let's go home and tell Mum about our awesome practice!" Biscuit said, his excitement bubbling over.
"Can't wait!" Lucas replied. "And don't forget to tell her you're going to be the best goalie!"
With plans for future playdates and dreams of the upcoming school year, Biscuit knew this friendship was just the beginning of many adventures to come.
As the weeks turned into months, the sunny Saturdays at the hockey field became a cherished routine for Biscuit, Lucas, and Roy. They practiced diligently, their skills sharpening with every session. What started as a simple promise of playing a sport turned into a journey of friendship and growth.
Over the next four years, the boys transformed into standout players on the field. Biscuit, with his determination and support from his friends, embraced his role as the goalie, developing a knack for blocking shots and making incredible saves. He became a master at anticipating the opposing team's moves, earning him admiration from his teammates and coaches alike.
Roy and Lucas honed their skills as defenders, their teamwork becoming legendary among their peers. They worked seamlessly together, using their speed and agility to create a formidable defense that protected Biscuit and kept their team in the game.
As the boys progressed through the ranks, they began to compete in championship matches. The thrill of the competition brought out their competitive spirits, and each game was a test of their hard work and dedication. Together, they navigated the ups and downs of youth sports—celebrating victories and comforting each other after losses.
That season, they made it to the finals, each game culminating in the excitement of reaching the championship. The entire team was united in their aspirations and dreams as they faced each opponent with determination. The chemistry among Biscuit, Lucas, and Roy was undeniable; they had become each other's foundation of support.
As the championship match approached, the energy in the air was electric. Parents, friends, and family filled the stands, cheering for the team with every ounce of encouragement. Biscuit took a deep breath as he stood in the goal, feeling the familiar rush of anxiety but also the warmth of being surrounded by his friends.
"We've got this, Biscuit! We're going to make it!" Lucas shouted, giving Biscuit a reassuring nod.
"Just remember to keep your eyes on the ball," Roy added, enthusiasm bubbling in his voice. "We'll be right here with you!"
The match against the Wallabies began, and the game was intense. Biscuit dove, blocked shots, and defended against fierce attacks, showcasing his skills that had grown so much over the years. The scoreboard switched back and forth, the excitement palpable for everyone involved.
As the final moments of the game approached, the score was tied. Biscuit and his friends felt the weight of the championship title almost within their grasp. Then, in the last thrilling minute, the Wallabies launched a powerful attack.
Biscuit's heart raced as he focused intently on the ball. He could feel Lucas and Roy working diligently to fend off the opposing players. Just before the final buzzer echoed in the air, the Wallabies took a shot aimed directly at him. Biscuit leaped, but the shot was too powerful, threading past his outstretched paw.
The players fell silent for a moment as the ball hit the back of the net. The Wallabies erupted in cheers, securing their victory.
Despite the loss, Biscuit stood tall in the goal, knowing he had given it his all. Lucas and Roy rushed to his side, their expressions a mix of pride and disappointment.
"You were incredible out there, Biscuit!" Roy said, nudging him affectionately.
"Yeah! We fought hard together, and we'll come back even stronger next year!" Lucas added, his enthusiasm unwavering.
Biscuit took a deep breath, tears of frustration welling in his eyes. "I didn't want to lose. I wanted to win for us!"
Bandit, Chili, and Bluey rushed onto the field, wrapping their arms around Biscuit, filling him with warmth and love. "You played wonderfully, Biscuit! We're so proud of you!" Chili said, her eyes shining.
As the team gathered around, the boys found solace in each other's friendship, recognizing that while victory was sweet, experiencing the journey together was even more rewarding.
In the weeks and months that followed, Biscuit, Lucas, and Roy continued to train hard, knowing that every setback only fueled their passion and determination. The bond they had formed over the years became unbreakable, built on support, encouragement, and shared dreams.
And through it all, Biscuit evolved into not just a skilled goalie, but a confident player who knew the true meaning of teamwork. With every practice and every game, he was reminded that the friendships they had forged would be the foundation of their shared adventures, both on and off the field.
As they prepared for the next season, each boy looked forward to what lay ahead, ready to embrace whatever challenges came their way. The seeds of their friendship had been planted, destined to grow into a lifelong bond marked by laughter, teamwork and fun.
A/N I think I rewrote this chapter six or seven times. This was actually not supposed to be the 2nd chapter, but I decided Biscuit making friends and doing something he enjoys was a good character development. Also the ending is the setup for a future chapter but not the next. The ending is basically a look into the future.
Also loved introducing the next two OC's which will play a big role. Roy also shares his name with myself.
