Ash wandered through the Naranja Academy courtyard, marveling at the mix of Pokémon and students bustling about. Pikachu perched on his shoulder, equally intrigued by the lively atmosphere.
"Man, Pikachu," Ash said, looking around. "This place is amazing! Everyone's got such cool Pokémon, and—" He stopped mid-sentence, his eyes landing on a shy-looking girl walking by with an Eevee-themed backpack. The fluffy ears and tail of the bag were so realistic that Ash mistook it for an actual Eevee for a moment.
"Whoa! Look at that backpack, Pikachu!" Ash exclaimed, pointing.
"Pika!" Pikachu chirped, its eyes sparkling with interest.
The girl, noticing Ash staring at her, flinched and clutched the straps of her bag tighter. Her face turned a deep shade of red as she tried to avoid eye contact and quickened her pace.
"Excuse me!" Ash called out, jogging over to her. "That backpack's so cool! Where'd you get it?"
The girl squeaked in response, turning her head slightly. "Um... I-it's just a custom design," she mumbled, barely audible.
Ash, oblivious to her nervousness, leaned in closer. "It looks so floofy! I'd love one like that. Pikachu would probably fit right inside it, too!"
"Pika pika!" Pikachu agreed, wagging its tail.
The girl—Penny—tugged at her hoodie, attempting to shrink away. "I... uh... I have to go!" she stammered, turning and rushing off.
As she hurried away, something small and shiny fell from her bag—a keychain shaped like an Eevee. Ash noticed immediately and picked it up.
"Hey, wait! You dropped this!" Ash called, running after her.
Moments later...
Penny glanced back and saw Ash following her. Panic set in as her mind spiraled. Why is the Monarch following me? Did I say something wrong? Misinterpreting Ash's intentions, she thought he might be stalking her.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" Penny muttered under her breath, breaking into a full sprint.
Ash blinked in surprise as Penny took off. "Wait, I'm not mad! You forgot your keychain!" he shouted, chasing her.
Penny darted through the academy halls, weaving between students and Pokémon. Ash followed close behind, holding up the keychain. "I'm just trying to give this back!"
The scene turned chaotic. Penny's rapid movements startled several students, causing a chain reaction of spilled books and Pokémon scattering. Pikachu held tightly to Ash's shoulder as he dodged a group of Sprigatito playing in the hallway.
"She's fast," Ash muttered, grinning. "But I'm not giving up!"
The chase spilled out into the streets of Mesagoza. Penny bolted through the bustling marketplace, her heart pounding. Ash was hot on her heels, apologizing to vendors as he accidentally knocked over fruit stands in his pursuit.
"Sorry about that! I'll come back and help later!" Ash called over his shoulder.
Penny took a sharp turn into a narrow alley, hoping to lose him, but Ash followed with ease. Pikachu leapt off his shoulder and scurried up a wall, taking a shortcut to cut her off.
"Good thinking, Pikachu!" Ash said.
Penny glanced behind her, spotting Pikachu ahead of her path. "Why is he so persistent?!" she cried, clutching her backpack as she changed direction, running toward a nearby fountain.
Ash, still holding the keychain, shouted, "I swear I'm just trying to help!"
Finally, Penny's escape led her into a cul-de-sac near the academy gardens. Realizing there was no way out, she spun around, her back against the wall. She hugged her Eevee backpack tightly as Ash slowed to a stop, holding up the keychain.
"Hey," Ash said, panting but smiling. "You dropped this. I've been trying to give it back to you."
Penny blinked in disbelief, her cheeks flushing crimson. "T-that's why you were chasing me?"
Ash nodded, scratching his head. "Yeah! I didn't want you to lose it. It looks like it's special to you."
Penny hesitantly took the keychain from his outstretched hand, clutching it to her chest. "I... I thought you were mad or something," she mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
Ash laughed nervously. "Me? Mad? Nah! I just thought your backpack and keychain were really cool. I've never seen anything like them!"
Penny looked up slightly, her anxiety easing at Ash's genuine grin. "Oh... um, thanks. I designed the backpack myself."
"Really? That's so awesome!" Ash said, his enthusiasm making her smile a little. "You've got a real talent!"
Pikachu jumped onto Penny's shoulder, nuzzling her cheek. "Pika pika!"
Penny giggled softly. "Your Pikachu's really friendly."
"Yeah, he's the best partner ever," Ash said proudly. "So... are we cool? Sorry if I scared you earlier."
Penny nodded shyly. "Yeah, we're cool. Thanks for returning this."
"No problem!" Ash replied. "By the way, I'm Ash, and this is Pikachu. What's your name?"
"P-Penny," she said, adjusting her glasses. "Nice to meet you."
Ash grinned. "Nice to meet you too, Penny. Maybe we'll see each other around the academy?"
Penny nodded, a faint smile on her lips as she watched Ash and Pikachu walk away. For the first time, she felt a little less nervous about being at Naranja Academy.
