The art studio at Naranja Academy was abuzz with quiet concentration as students worked diligently on their paintings. The room was bathed in warm light, and the scent of paint and canvas filled the air. At the center of the room, perched atop a small pedestal, was the day's model: Hassel's Applin, a Dragon/Grass Pokémon that looked like an apple with eyes peeking out.
Ash sat at an easel near the back, nervously gripping a paintbrush. Pikachu sat beside him, curiously observing the colorful array of paints and the palette Ash was attempting to use.
"Man, this is harder than I thought," Ash muttered, staring at the half-finished painting on his canvas. What he'd envisioned as a vibrant depiction of Applin looked more like a smudgy red and green blob. "How do people make this look so easy?"
"Pikapi…" Pikachu tilted its head, trying to figure out what Ash was going for.
At the front of the room, the instructor of the class, Hassel, surveyed the students' work with his hands behind his back. The dragon-loving Elite Four member had an air of sophistication and passion, his piercing eyes glinting with intensity as he evaluated each painting.
"Marvelous! Simply marvelous!" Hassel proclaimed, stopping at a student's easel and gesturing dramatically at their work. "The colors! The shading! You've captured Applin's charm with such finesse!"
As Hassel moved around the room, his gaze eventually fell upon Ash's canvas. Ash froze, bracing for what he assumed would be constructive criticism—or maybe outright pity.
Hassel stepped closer, studying the canvas. His eyes widened, and he clasped his hands together as if in prayer. "By the heavens!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with raw emotion. "This… this is extraordinary!"
Ash blinked, looking between his chaotic painting and Hassel. "Wait… are you talking about my painting?"
"Yes! YES!" Hassel cried, tears already welling up in his eyes. "You've done it! You've captured the hidden essence of Applin! The soul, the mystery, the untapped depth of its being!"
"Uh… really?" Ash tilted his head, scratching the back of his neck. Pikachu's ears twitched in confusion as it squinted at the painting.
Hassel was fully immersed in his critique now, pacing dramatically in front of the canvas. "Look at the boldness of your brushstrokes! The raw energy! This red—it screams vitality! And this green—such a deep connection to nature's embrace!"
Ash squinted at the blob on the canvas. "I mean, I was trying to paint Applin, but…"
"Precisely!" Hassel interrupted, tears now streaming freely down his face. "You've transcended mere form to grasp the essence of Applin's true nature! Look, class! LOOK at how he's captured the subtle roundness, the hidden depth within this Pokémon's gaze!"
The other students gathered around, some tilting their heads to see what Hassel was talking about, others holding back laughter at the painting's abstract interpretation.
Ash rubbed the back of his neck, feeling both flattered and confused. "Uh, thanks, I guess? I just kinda… tried my best."
"And that effort has borne fruit, young man!" Hassel said, dramatically clasping Ash's hand. "You've shown us that art is not about perfection—it's about passion! Your work is a testament to your fighting spirit, just like your battles."
At this point, Hassel's Applin hopped down from its pedestal and crawled over to Ash, chirping softly. It seemed pleased with the painting, rubbing its small head against Ash's leg.
"See? Even Applin agrees!" Hassel cried, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to dab his eyes. "Such a heartfelt tribute deserves nothing less than admiration. I am honored to have witnessed it!"
Ash exchanged a look with Pikachu, who shrugged. "Well, I guess if Applin likes it, it's not so bad."
"Not bad?!" Hassel exclaimed, grabbing Ash's shoulders. "It is nothing short of inspiring! You, Ash Ketchum, have shown me that even the Monarch can express himself in ways beyond battle!"
Ash chuckled nervously, feeling his cheeks heat up. "Thanks, Hassel. You're, uh, really passionate about this, huh?"
"Passion is the fire that fuels our souls, young man!" Hassel declared, releasing Ash and turning to address the class. "Let this moment inspire you all to embrace the freedom of expression in your art! Channel your emotions, your dreams, your very being, into every stroke of the brush!"
As the class ended and the students began packing up their supplies, Hassel approached Ash again. "Ash, my boy, thank you for attending today's session. Your presence and work have brought great joy to this old dragon's heart."
"Uh, no problem," Ash said, smiling awkwardly. "I guess art isn't so bad after all."
"Indeed! And if you ever wish to explore the creative arts further, you will always have a place in my studio!" Hassel said, bowing deeply. His Applin chirped in agreement, wiggling happily.
As Ash left the studio with Pikachu on his shoulder, he couldn't help but chuckle. "Man, that guy's something else. I've met a lot of passionate people, but Hassel's on a whole other level."
"Pika pika," Pikachu agreed.
