So, I guess now is a good time for a quest, heh?
I was a bit surprised that now of all times I would get a quest, but I guess it was best to not look on the good horse's mouth this time around. Especially when the rewards were overall positive. Especially that Perk since it meant I could now travel the Dark World without suffering some random shit from the weather. Nothing that could really fix up the frigging issue that was the Dark World Malus, but at least I didn't need to put on layers of Frost Demons' cloths to preserve my HP.
There was a single issue as I marched along to deal with the first step of this quest: Freya was to act as my guide and companion. Normally I wouldn't say no to form a party if this meant speeding up the process of getting this job done, but one thing was to hire a seasoned warrior and another was...
"Ugh, why is this so uneven!" Freya huffed, holding a massive axe that was clearly not her best suited weapon.
From what I could remember, 'Kirara' was meant to become a Ninja Orb specialist. Ninja Orbs were the best for casters that had a fuckton of Mana to use and little capacity with physical weapons. Knowing her current petite frame didn't offer the same limitations as her future self, maybe this wasn't entirely a bad situation for her, but I knew that I had to keep an extra eye on her. Which, in turn, meant that I had to pay extreme attention to her through the task.
"So, Shingo," She hummed as she led the way, dragging the axe along and carving a path behind her that I was following. "What kind of friend is Lilim?"
"A bit shy," I remarked curtly. "She is nice."
Freya beamed. "Daddy says mommy is nice too. Does it mean-"
"Please don't."
She giggled, her childish amusement almost getting me to crack a smile too. Almost.
The interactions she presented through the trek were never too heavy, but there was a display of a teasing nature which was unusual for the character. Maybe it was the future circumstances that would lead up Freya/Kirara to become a shy and rather self-conscious individual, but right now she was quite the social child - it was just she hardly had a chance to befriend kids her age. That and the fact her parents were there to care for her. If things go well here now... well, Kirara wouldn't be 'born'. It would be Freya.
And she would become a formidable Frost Demon with enough training, discipline and attention.
"You're looking at me a lot! What's about it?"
"Just thinking how tall you're going to get after seeing your mom."
That had her perking up. Despite her spunky attitude, Freya had a degree of self-conscious for being tiny. Not something she had any fault for, but I bet she was going to loathe puberty with how tall and busty she was going to get.
"Yeah, I will be the tallest and the strongest!"
I nodded along as I knew she was right about it. And it raised the mood just enough that we were both ready for the approaching brawl.
Fifty Frost Demons, some were veterans but most were lowly thugs that had little to no experience in combat. They were all there for the money and the power that this 'Allfather' guy, Sinmara's uncle, was planning to attain by taking over Sinmara's birthright as the new leader of the Tribes.
The Yggdrasil Tree was not a 'connection to all realms', but rather an unique tree that provided fertile lands for the Frost Demons to cultivate. It was a source of life for all tribes and who controlled it could easily become their overlord.
Using bribery and recruiting criminals, Heino had gotten a strong enough force to defend the Tree from Sinmara and even captured some vital supply depots for the main tribe. This was a half-a-coup as Sinmara's own forces were still too strong to encourage an all-out offensive... but if time went on and supplies dwindled, then Heino was going to have an easy win on barely-fed and thirsty foes.
That was... if we didn't do anything about it.
Freya squeaked a battle cry as she managed to lift her battle axe and lead the charge once we were upon them. While I would have favored a more stealthy approach, perhaps it was for the best we got all of those in the open and dealt with them before they could hide or escape.
As expected, none thought that this 'silly' attack was too worrisome as most of the warriors appeared to be particularly eager to 'take revenge on Sinmara's kid'. Sadly for them, Freya wasn't exactly a dumb child. The reason Sinmara sent her little daughter to fight was so that Freya could put her training to work and her axe was stained with hostile blood almost instantly as some fools tried to sweep it out of her hold. A head went flying because of that.
The sight surprised the force, but Freya didn't stop there. I told her to not pause too long on her first kill and stop only when all enemies were gone. She instantly darted to the nearest two, then four, then six.
I handled my own foes as they were equally confident I would lose or something. The attack was ruthless and rapid, and we managed to make good gains from that circumstance.
DING! 4x LEVEL UP!
Name: Tsukino Shingo

LCK: 89 (287)
I am now slightly stronger, but the malus had truly crippled me to slightly more than half my full power. The real outright positive news was that Freya did see a massive level up spree.
She used to be a Level 5, but now-
Onisaki Freya
LV.18
HP: 12000/12000
She was really on her way to reach her mother despite Sinmara being at around Level 80. With that sort of pace... man, demons have it easy in terms of gains, but I guess the drawback is living in such a shitty reality.
By the time we were done clearing out the camp, the sky darkened and a return back home was unfeasible just yet, we had the lingering camp equipment to stay over.
Freya smiled as she got herself a little pillow fort with the surplus of pillows she claimed as 'her right of conquest', while I kept near with the intention of keeping the guard for the night. It wouldn't be any different than any day spent in patrol but...
He also couldn't stop but worry that Renji's guarantee that his missing status back home being 'justified' may not be effective, not with some girls being quite tense about this sort of stuff.
Hattori Seishu was a very annoyed but proud woman.
Annoyed because her student foolishly charged head-on against a bunch of foolish demons.
Proud because he did so and she doubted he was going to regret these actions.
That being said, the woman was miffed particularly for the extra care needed to deal with those girls, one of which being Shingo's sister. Full-on Hypnosis had been ruled out in advance due to the 'Sailor Scouts' resistance, so they had fabricated a little 'week-long study program' which would explain Shingo's disappearance.
The parents had been hypnotized, same for people at school to allow this to be 'legitimate', but Seishu had to clean after her daughter's mistakes when she picked up on the investigations launched by the Scouts. They truly were smart when it came to finding out about the boy, but Seishu was not a sloppy cleaner.
Only red herrings remained, and none of which was meant to alarm the girls. Instead, they would just believe those to be stuff Shingo do in the daily. The gym route was about 'keeping up in shape', while the book-hunting was about him wanting to keep his grades high.
Didn't stop the damn brats from still putting their noses around at random instances.
Now she could understand a bit Shingo's own gripe at dealing with these girls. That being said...
"Are you sure you don't want-"
"I am not going to babysit that boy!" She snarled at her own daughter, well-aware her body language told otherwise with how tense she was. "The brat wanted this, and he better come back a winner or die trying."
It was nothing new to Senshu as it happened to all under Seishu, but it felt odd to also see how perplexing her own concern was. Did she do the same when any of them was stuck in deadly missions?
No, as painful as it was Senshu and her brother had it rougher with a mother that wanted a strong boy/son/grandson to inherit her style. And with Senshu's brother having taken more on their father's softness, same for his daughters, it was fair to say that Shingo was Seishu's 'baby boy'.
And it was going to be hell if he didn't return back home in due time and alive with his little girlfriend on tow.
That much, Hattori Seishu could viciously promise.
AN
Shingo: Busy doing side-quests for the main quests.
Seishu: IM FINE! (proceeds to pace tensely around the living room, whisper angrily about spanking her surrogate son/grandson for being a good but worrisome little shit).
I planned to add the 'End Chapter Stats', but Shingo is bound to level up a lot in the next few chapters so... brace more more stats!
