The Clone Wars saw conflict break out across the galaxy, with warships of previously Incomparable size coming into play. This led to the need for a new classification system for warships. In the early days of the war, the Confederacy of Independent Systems devised such a system for the use of its navy.

Compared to the Anaxis System used during and after the war, the CIS system focuses more on role and less on raw tonnage, though the size of a vessel does come into play. This is due to the large variety of ships in CIS service due to its origin as multiple independent navies.

Escort:

Generally small, swift vessels meant for fast attack in packs or escorting larger ships, Escorts were rare in mainline CIS formations, but far more common is units built from planetary defense forces, as these small vessels are often all they have.

Frigates:

Well rounded capital ships that lack any real specialization, Frigates are the backbone of many CIS fleets, doing nearly everything decently, but not well. This versatility gives the Confederacy options unavailable to the Republic, but also presents a challenge when a Frigate is faced with a ship in its own niche, often being outperformed.

Destroyer:

Swift, offensively powerful, but weakly armored vessels, Destroyers should never be taking the brunt of enemy fire during an engagement, instead allowing more durable vessels to take the hits while supporting them with heavy fire. This was not always the case, with Destroyers often forced into battles they are not designed for, leading to their destruction.

Cruiser:

Relatively swift, well rounded vessels, but with some form of specialized role in the fleet. Whether fighter carrying or point defense, or direct brawling, Cruisers work best in large formations with other vessels so they can fulfill their role and have their shortfalls covered by other vessels.

Dreadnought:

Similar to Cruisers, but generally larger and with a focus on large range capabilities, Dreadnoughts often serve as flagships due to their size and being well out of the direct line of fire.

Battleship:

Large, lumbering vessels with a focus on short range firepower and protection, Battleships often serve as anchors for fleets, smaller vessels surrounding them. The majority of Battleships in CIS service are simply refit bulk freighters, but some are of dedicated design.

Heavy Cruiser:

Large vessels with a similar nature to Cruisers, Heavy Cruiser match the speed of their smaller brethren, yet have far superior capabilities. These vessels were rare, being produced at extreme expense for often limited utility.
