Zatren's eyes widen as he rolls to the side. A purple beam of light pierced the air where he was standing a moment later. The laser collides with the Dungeon's trees, blasting them apart and setting what remains on fire.
''Daughter of a whor-'' His angry shout is interrupted as six crystalized spikes are shot from the Queen's body. In a last-minute decision, he drops his [Mana Shield] and tries to dodge the incoming projectiles.
The brunt of the attack was dodged. But, two of the spikes managed to land. One grazed his face, making a cut on his cheek, while the other pierced the left shoulder. Penetrating through the leather armor and skin. His [Reinforcement] stopped the bullet-like crystal from going any deeper.
-8% HP.
''Shit, that hurts!'' A pained grunt comes out of his mouth. Still, it was better than reducing his already dwindling mana pool.
''Focus, Partner! Uncontrolled anger has no place in the battlefield!'' The firm but reassuring voice of Jinzui resonates from the spear, clearing Zatren's mind slightly. This wasn't a fight that could be won by only striking fast and hard, like the previous one.
'Right! System, upgrade the Equip Bonus on my current spear, now!' This won't change the tides drastically, but it will give him a better fighting chance, at the very least.
Rainbow Slime Spear's All STATS Up (Small) bonus has upgraded to All STATS Up (Medium)!
The color-changing spear seems to glow brighter momentarily, before going back to normal. Its colors are slightly more vibrant than before.
That is all he manages to do before the wide form of the Queen Slime comes barreling towards him in a jump at higher speeds than the felled King Slime. At the same size, too!
Zatren is not immobile, however. The spearhead of his electrified weapon gains a purple-like glow as he changes Weapon Forms in retaliation. Both fighters take the next blow of the other as the half-mermaid clashes with the Queen of All Slimes.
''[Toxic Strike]!'' His voice exclaims as the oozing violet glow connects with his enemy. The Hero Skill belongs to none other than the Purple Slime Spear.
This was a bit of a high-risk, high-reward move from the black-haired spear wielder.
-13% HP.
Zatren's body ragdolls. His form is blown away by the impact with the bigger opponent. A groan of pain escapes his lips, yet a little smile forms too.
''I'm going to feel that one in the morning…'' With difficulty, pained muscles flex as he gets up. Looking at his opponent, he can already see the effects of his risky play, as the Queen of Slimes falters for a moment.
Queen Slime has been inflicted with the [Severely Poisoned] Debuff!
The smile transforms into a smirk at the realization of his gamble working. He adopts a battle stance, the bottom part of the spear being grabbed by the right hand, while the top part is being held loosely by the left hand, where his injured shoulder is.
Zatren takes his opponent's hesitation to quickly check his status, and his enemy's. The confident smirk falters for a moment.
Zatren Fumigami

[Injury] (Debuff)
[Reinforcement] (Buff)
Queen Slime Boss.
HP: [-91%-]

[Severely Poisoned] (Debuff)
He didn't like his chances; [Reinforcement] was taking a heavy toll on his MP, but the Queen wasn't unscathed. That Debuff will chip away at her, he only needs to stay in the move as long as possible.
The moment to think is over. Angry bubbling comes out of the form of the Queen. How dare this scum damage her body and infect her with these lowly toxins?!
The gem of her crown shines brightly, responding to her fury as she shoots another destructive beam of light.
With a stomp, Zatren dodges the imprecise laser while dashing directly at the furious slime. 'I need another approach' is what courses through his head.
The purplish spear on his hand changes to a glowing one, with a dark red handle and bright orange tip that seems to irradiate heat. The Lava Slime Spear is equipped once again.
'All of the slimes have quite the fire weakness, except for the Lava Slime, and this one specifically has given up resistance for speed!' With that in mind, He plunges the spearhead deep into the side of the Queen, her body sizzling and burning at the natural heat damage of the weapon.
Queen Slime has been inflicted with the [Burning] Debuff!
The first reaction of the giant Queen is to pull away from the burning heat. A shower of crystals explodes from her form to punish the bold move from her opponent. The closeness allows for devastating piercing attacks at point-blank range.
However, the System user's offensive is relentless. Sacrificing HP and pulling through his newly open and bleeding injuries to inflict the most amount of damage possible.
-23% HP.
You have been inflicted with the [Bleeding Debuff].
''[Fire Lance I]!'' The furious and pained shout comes out. This time, a powerful sonic wave follows suit, making the pink gelatin blob shake.
The already burning spear is covered with newfound flames, coming in a huge burst and burning away at Queen Slime's body, making her form writhe and bubble with the intense heat.
This isn't without sacrifice, however.
The suffocating heat of this attack used multiple times in a row has consequences on the half-sea creature teenager.
The intense heat has caused the moisture in your body and around you to feel weaker.
[Dry Body I] Status has been applied.
In an instant, his body slumps. Ragged breath escapes his mouth; each breath seems to make his lungs inflate with more heat. Sweat pours from his forehead, trying and failing to moisturize rapidly drying skin.
Pulling away as fast as possible, he makes distance with the weakened Queen. However, the wounded slime takes advantage. Finally, away from the searing flames, two gigantic and pale angel wings sprout from her body and a jump is all that she needs to take flight.
Now in the safety of the sky, her crown shines again, brighter than before as she changes her next attack.
'Fuck… I didn't know my own abilities could inflict the damn racial Debuff!' Panic ensues in his mind as he watches the bright shine from the Queen's crown, a purple light starting to gather around the gem. Intense shine that threatens to overshadow the natural light from the sky.
''Partner! I have an idea, but you need to distract her!'' Jinzui's voice comes out once again. Reassurance in her words contrasts with the impending doom of the charging attack. Even now it's evident to see the Queen Slime's gigantic MP bar draining rapidly.
''Fine, but I can only use one more Hero Skill before my bar reaches zero!'' A serious determination replaces panic. Immense trust is placed in Jinzui's sudden plan.
The spear changes once more to the colorful, Rainbow Slime one. The upgrade in stats makes bearing the multiple status effects more bearable.
The weapon is pointed at the Queen with an uninjured hand. The timer of [Reinforcement] looms like the death reaper, ready to take the last hopes of winning the fight.
''[Tri-Strike Javelin I]!'' Translucent orange weaponry flies at the Queen. Her evasion, however, proves superior as she maneuvers around the flying projectiles.
Still, hitting her wasn't the intended outcome.
Her concentration falters at the sudden attack. The purple glow of the charging beam diminishes as some of the mana used gets dispersed into the air.
''Throw me! NOW!'' Comes the shout of the Weapon Spirit.
''Here goes nothing!'' Pumping all of his remaining mana pool into his weapon, and then some, the electricity around it makes it look like a lightning bolt more than a spear.
The last motes of reinforced strength are used to throw the Legendary Weapon at the flying opponent. At the same time, a gigantic, purple death beam is shot from the Queen's crown.
Purple Light meets Blue Thunder in the sky as a stalemate ensues.
Yet, the lightning is concentrated in a single point, while the beam is more of an AOE attack.
The spear pierces the definitive attack of the airborne Regina, as an intense shock of electricity shakes the very foundation of her existence.
The defeated body of the Dungeon Boss falls from the sky. Her gelatin splatted against the floor, the crystal inside her body shattered to pieces, and her once pearly white wings bunt to black by the intense electric current.
''Get fucked, Queen of Snot!'' The fall of an enemy, interrupted by none other than the victor of the encounter.
Slime Queen Boss has been defeated!
Rewards sent to the inventory-
Is all Zatren manages to read before his body finally slackens. His muscles were exhausted and in pain with every breath, his MP absolutely empty.
Now, with the adrenaline leaving his body, he hits the ground and blacks out.
He does that a lot lately, huh?
-Fumigami Zatren's POV-
The first thing I notice is the lack of the warm sun on my skin and the absence of the pleasant wind of the grassy plains.
The second thing is the piercing headache beating the shit out of my brain, as if I owe it money or something.
There's a sense of Déjà vu somewhere, I know it.
The throbbing of my head makes its counter-argument.
''Son of a bitch! AHG!'' The first pained shout comes. My face scrunched up, even with closed eyes. Then, comes the second at the sound of my own voice echoing through my head, sending another jolt of pain.
''Well, someone woke up in a bad mood.'' says a melodic and ethereal voice, a hint of amusement in it.
And I sure as hell recognize the voice of my own partner.
As I sit up and open my eyes, I gaze at my partner. White, long hair tied up in a bun; deep crimson eyes that hold a hint of warmth, and a little smile that does its best to hide her clear amusement.
''Ah, Jinzui!'' A smile breaks on my features as I properly get up. My hand caressed my head for a bit while trying to make it hurt less.
''Long time no see, Partner! I didn't know you could interact with me outside of this… mindscape, I guess?'' I tilt my head in confusion for a moment. There are a lot of vibrant colors around the previously blank void, like a white canvas that has been sprayed with random paint.
It was beautiful and mesmerizing, yet a bit weird.
''Yes, it has been a while. I suppose you have questions?'' Her voice interrupts my thoughts about the light show as I give her a nod.
''I'll do my best to answer, then. First,'' Her eyes look around the mindscape, a fond expression on her face. ''This 'mindscape', as you call it, gets filled with color and objects as you unlock more Weapon Forms. Depending on the weapon equipped, it looks different too. But, since you were knocked out, the Legendary Spear went back to the base Small Spear form.''
That made some sort of sense. Obviously, all of this didn't exist in the main series, but I'm starting to treat meta-knowledge with a nice spoonful of salt.
''Now, as for my decision to not speak before today. I was just letting you get a feel for your new power, to see if you understood the ''mechanics'' just as your memory told me.'' Her gaze looks at me anew. She gives a nod in acknowledgment as her eyes brighten slightly. ''I have to say, I'm quite pleased. You seem to understand the functions of the Spear better than most of my previous users.''
The little compliment fills me with pride as I nod with a little smirk.
''Your combat prowess, however, is as sharp as a butter knife.'' Jinzui finishes, her hand covering her mouth. There's a twinkle of something in her eyes.
I do a spit take and a little tick mark seems to appear on my brow.
The proud façade I put on breaks as I narrow my eyes at her in mock offense. I turn my head to the side with a 'humph'. ''Well, excuse me for not being an expert using such a… brutish weapon.''
That broke her amusement. ''HAA?! Who are you calling brutish, you half-fish boy?!'' She points a finger at me in accusation.
Her lady-like composure was totally broken by that. That's fucking hilarious.
And I definitively let that know as I start to laugh, after a moment, Jinzui laughs too at the bit of tomfoolery.
Talking to her is fun, but I better get to the matter at hand. So, the most important and unnerving thought of all comes first.
''Jinzui, I had this question for a while now.'' There is a bit of panic as I say this. ''Now that you are connected to this world, are the Waves of Calamity going to appear? As if this was a 'one weapon' world?''
This is quite a serious topic. The Waves are practically 'natural disasters', and if I remember correctly, there was something or someone who was behind them.
A god? A lot of gods? I don't really remember.
My worries are brushed off, however. Jinzui steps closer and pats my shoulder a few times, her attitude is reassuring and calm.
''Don't worry, Zatren.'' She says calmly. ''It's true that the stronger your weapon gets, the stronger my connection with the world becomes. In another circumstance, the threat of the Waves of Calamity would be very much real.'' Her smile transforms into a cheeky grin, showing a bit of teeth.
There is a sudden haughtiness to her voice, now. ''Fortunately, The System is keeping all of that under wraps. No matter how attuned to the world I become, the Waves and the ones behind them could ever touch this world…'' She explains with confidence.
That makes me breathe a sigh of relief. Man, it's nice to have such a dependable companion.
''Unless you died, maybe… Ehe~'' She changes her tune again, scratching her cheek a bit as she looks to the side. There is clear nervousness in her now.
My eye twitches slightly at that.
''What do you mean 'Ehe'? That's a really concerning thing to say, you know?!'' My hands go to her shoulders as I start shaking her.
I'm not actually mad at her, but it's pretty fun to tease her like this.
Still, the fact that if I were to die, there's a minimal chance of all hell breaking loose in this world is horrifying. That's something I have to make sure that doesn't happen.
''Oi! Don't shake me! I'm going to get… dizzy… awawawawa…'' Her eyes appear to comically swirl while I shake her and a smile blooms on my face at the scene.
I have to admit, that little sound is pretty cute.
After a bit, Jinzui seems to snap out of it. I take my hands off her shoulders with an amused smile. Her eyes narrow in a heatless glare, a little pout on her face.
Damn it, I want to pinch her cheeks, but that's enough teasing for now.
She clears her throat, her regal mannerism returning. ''I believe you have more questions. Ask away, partner.'' Even if she tries to act all mighty again, I know her true nature now. This weakness shall be exploited at a later date.
What if I head pat her right now? No, no. Questions first, fun later.
''My next question is simple. Is there a way for me to gain more Strengthening Methods? This world doesn't have other legendary heroes, and I doubt that two Vassal Heroes will just spawn because of your presence.'' The power of the Legendary Weapons is huge, don't get me wrong.
The thing is, there is an upper limit to the 'base' weapon. Sure, I'm nowhere near it. But, in The Shield Hero, even worlds with just one Legendary Hero will have at the minimum two Vassal Heroes.
This means that you will end up with five Strengthening Methods, at least. Since each Vassal Weapon only has one method.
''That… Is not something I can answer.'' Her expression sours for a moment, but a thoughtful look replaces it a moment later. ''Again, under normal circumstances, I will say no. So, unless your 'Gacha' gives you a Vassal Weapon and you find someone worthy of it, there shouldn't be another way of getting them.''
I frown slightly, that is… not optimal.
''However,'' There is a little smile on her face again, a hint of pride in her words. ''The System should be able to get you a 'Quest' for it, and I have no doubts you will be able to complete it. You are the Spear Hero, after all!'' I will let that little smugness be.
The minuscule rise in my ego and her adorable smug face has nothing to do with it, no sir.
Still, my eyes widen minutely at the sound logic. ''Is that true, System? Can you make a Quest about it?'' The question echoes in the void, and the answer is a translucent screen.
Thought you would never ask.
Due to the petition of the Legendary Spear Spirit and the User of the System, A Quest has been initiated.
Quest: The Rising of the Spear Hero.
The Legendary Weapons are basically 'The Will of the World'. However, in this world, there are no Waves of Calamity to fight against. The 'Four Cardinal Weapons' are just not a thing.
With no other Legendary or Vassal weapons, the way of upgrading yours becomes quite limited. Let's fix that.
Objective:
Make the world acknowledge ''The Cardinal Spear of Legend''. This can be done in multiple ways.
Great feats of power, heroic deeds, and even something like ruling the world with an iron fist will make the World acknowledge your weapon and partner as a part of it.
Reward:
When you complete a notable amount of objectives or make waves around the world with your actions; a random Strengthening Method will be granted.
Extra rewards may vary depending on your actions.
Well, that's definitely what I asked for.
Also, would you look at that? A Quest with consequences attached to it. I was thinking when something like this was going to appear.
''There you have it, partner.'' The voice of Jinzui makes me look away from the screen. Her tone is neutral; a perfect poker face is what accompanies it. ''This next part is your choice. I will be with you every step of the way, no matter your path.''
Well, isn't someone being a bit overdramatic about this? Silly.
I chuckle. An involuntary grin showed across my face. ''Come on, Jinzui. You're saying that like I am about to go full psychopath and turn the edgiest overlord ever.'' Her impassive face breaks a little at that, her amusement returning.
''Let's do our best, Partner. The world shall know of ''The Cardinal Spear of Legend'', protector of the world, savior of the people!'' I say in an excited voice but a deadpan stare.
I cover my left eye with my hand and make the other eye glow with mana. I'm cranking the Chuuni inside of me to the max!
As expected, Jinzui's façade breaks completely as she laughs, loudly. A beautiful sound that makes me smile. She wipes a tear from her face as the laughing subsides, little by little.
A relieved sigh escaped her mouth. ''Of course, Zatren. We shall.'' As we exchange smiles, a thought occurs. My face soured slightly at the realization.
''Jinzui, I have one more question.'' I think she can notice the somberness in my voice since she frowns slightly.
''The Cursed Series, and the Blessed Series for that matter. I assume they are unlockable?'' I can see her mood taking a dip for a moment, and I chastise myself for that.
But, I need to know.
''Yes, Partner. They are.'' Is the first thing she says. With a sad sigh, she continues. ''As you know, the Cursed Series is tied to the '7 Cardinal Sins'; Wrath, Lust, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, and Sloth. The unlocking conditions, are the same as you remember.''
She takes a pause in her explanation while gathering her thoughts. I really hate to put her through this.
'''The shattering of one's mind' is a bit of an insufficient explanation, though.'' A deep melancholy invades her gaze. Like she's seeing something that isn't there. ''The detailed version is: Not only will your mind be torn to pieces, but your will too. The Cursed Series is a defense mechanism in the weapons to protect the user from extreme psychological stimuli. The after-effects are not pretty either.''
A chill goes down my spine at the revelation. It just sounded so… awful.
A pensive look crosses my features. The explanations check out, I think. Some sorts of media depicted the unlocking of the Cursed Series as a last resort when at dead's door, but that never made much sense to me.
I hope I never reach that point.
''What about the Blessed Series?'' From what I know, it's a pretty powerful version without the backlash of the Cursed Series.
''The Blessed series is a bit different. While they can be based on the '7 Capital Virtues', this isn't always the case.'' Her tone isn't as harrowing while talking about it, but it definitively isn't as lively as ever.
''I wish I could give you an example, but the memories after a Cursed Series unlock are always kind of haze.'' Her hand massages her temple, a hint of frustration is noticeable at her lack of memories. ''The way of unlocking has a simple explanation, however. You must overcome what made you fall into the vice of the Cursed Series in the first place. Only then, you will unlock the Blessed Series.''
As she finishes her explanation, the light in the mindscape seems to change. I can even feel the warmth of the sun on my skin.
''It seems you are waking up, Partner. Making this conversation possible took a bit of energy. So, I'll talk to you at a later date.'' Her tone goes back to a soft and happy tune, a mischievous glint in her eyes. ''I recommend a bit of relaxing, go and get laid or something. Chop, chop.''
This is the last thing I hear before I'm in the middle of the grassy plains once again.
There appear to be no more enemies around. The spear rests in my hand in its 'Small Spear' form. Yet, a tick appears over my head.
''What do you mean 'go and get laid', you old hag?!'' Grumbles and curses come out of my mouth as I shake the weapon a bit. Maybe that will make her dizzy again, who knows.
With a resigned sigh, I look through the new notifications after the fight with the Queen Slime.
By exerting your magic to its absolute limit and surviving, your mana pool has become bigger!
Debuff: You have used too much mana and your mana circuits have become strained. Until you recover completely, you will recover 75% less MP. If you strain your circuits further, this will result in permanent damage.
Debuff Duration: 2 Days, 12 Hours, 32 Minutes, 21 Seconds…
''Well, fuck me both sides, I guess.'' This sucks. That basically means no magic training for at least two and a half days.
Well, Jinzui did say to take it easy. It's a good opportunity to just go out and meet more of the main cast, or just explore a bit of Kuoh Town and see what I find.

My eyes widen in surprise at the sheer quantity of notifications. It seems that the notifications for all my efforts got pushed down until I finished the Dungeon.
Still, with every new screen I read, my grin widened a bit more. The massive rewards and level-ups tingled something inside my brain, (Or was that the 'Shallow Bitch curse'?) a sensation that I liked very much.
''Now that, is a morning well spent if you ask me!'' I was satisfied, and this was without counting the Boss Treasure Bags in my inventory. I'll check those ones later, as I will with the rest of the loot.
Before I forget, I take a look around and take what remains of the bodies from both King and Queen Slime.
There was almost nothing from the King, tho. Consequence of him being practically carbonized, probably.
''[Exit Dungeon]''
Finally, at home, I sent the damaged armor I was wearing back to my Inventory. I should take a bath to rinse the blood and sweat off.
A tired sigh escapes my lips. The spear in my hand goes back to its 'chain' form, tying itself around my neck.
''I will always be grateful for not having to go out with a weapon in hand everywhere,'' I say happily.
After a good shower, and cleaning all the blood and grime off my body, I change into fresh clothes and walk into the living room. In the middle of the living space is Rei, who gives me a little wave with one of her front legs. Then, she scurries back to her corner with a…
is that a dead squirrel?
''I'm not getting involved with that, but I should probably look for something else to eat.'' I fear she will exterminate the whole neighborhood fauna.
At least she didn't stain anything with blood. Small mercies and all of that, you know?
A knock sounds at the front door. My eyes narrowed in confusion, who could that be? A neighbor, maybe?
An Emergency Quest has been given!
Quest: Neighborhood Devils.
Unbeknownst to you, the owners of this town have been keeping tabs on you. This past few weeks, your activities and progress have been monitored. Fortunately, they seem to perceive you don't have malicious intent, for now.
They ultimately decided on a diplomatic approach. So, they have come to give introductions.
Objective:
Don't screw up your first meeting with the Devils.
Reward:
Depends on the result of your meeting.
''Well, shit.'' Is my intelligent response while deadpanning at the closed door.
I don't think there's a way of getting around this. I'll just open the door and put on my best 'social gathering' face.
I walk to the door… and immediately stub my toe with the table leg in the living room.
''Fuck!'' The world is testing me today, I swear!
.
.
.
Author's Note:
.
hrodwulf: I said in the previous chapter she was around a hand big with her legs extended. If you want a reference search 'Tarantula Spider Size'. Yes, the spooder got big. Hope this clears it up!
.
InfernoKnightmare: That seems oddly specific, and fit for a few chapters worth. I can't guarantee I will make something so specific, but there will be Dungeons that aren't combat-specific. More about puzzles and maybe some adventure! :D.
.
Koncor the great: Yup, Zeus is quite the playboy! Lmao.
World traveling isn't exactly out of the question, but it's not on the table right now. We have lots of things to do in DxD!
Also, even while unlocking things like 'Water/Ice Spear' That doesn't guarantee unlocking a Skill. But with a bit of effort, He can probably unlock some sort of cryomancy!
.
Lamont: Yeah, some skills are just boring to see leveling up. Also, I will try to not make unnecessary Skills, unless they're for a one-liner thing. Something like a 'study Skill' being mentioned and not elaborated upon, since it's a pretty basic and uninteresting one.
.
Dr. Gale: I understand, but I believe multiple POV's or changing the Person entirely is neccesary for a story. A first person POV can give you the feelings of the character, humanizing it in a way. While a Third Person POV gives you the perspective of a true reader. Someone who can see everything happening at once. Hope that isn't a bother!
.
Guest: Lmao.
.
.
How's it going? Hope you're having a nice weekend!
We got the battle with a third-person perspective. This is practice for when bigger conflicts arise and multiple people are involved, or for different battles happening at the same time!
Anyway. We got some info from Jinzui herself. Even so, if you would like I can still make a Dungeon that represents a Wave Of Calamity, even if they ain't happening in the real world. That's a bit far in the future, tho. Tell me what you think.
Also:
Zatren: GG EASY, BOYS! Just like your dad, I gotta leave. See you all next time!
Jinzui: My partner in Christ. You almost got no diffed by cotton candy flavored jelly.
Zatren: Easy game. No rematch.
Jinzui: Bruh.
