Chapter 31

"How bad is it?" Fin Tutuola asked CSU tech Sue Pipkin. She was identifying the bullets that Melinda had sent her from Dylan's body down at the lab and the SVU Sergeant was breathing down her neck a bit.

"Well for your intruder, pretty bad. As for the shoot, I can't see IAB labelling this a bad one. Why are you pestering me?" Sue gave him a look.

"We need to know if it was Bruno's bullet or Rollins' bullet," Fin didn't want to go into all the details.

"Melinda said that she couldn't pick which shot got him. He took two to the chest, one to the abdomen, and one to the thigh. The chest shots were fatal but so was the thigh shot," Sue told him.

"Whose bullets hit where?" Fin pressed.

"Bruno had a chest shot and the thigh shot. Rollins had a chest shot and the one to the abdomen. I'll put it in my report," she promised before giving him a look before continuing, "Dylan's family breathing down your neck?"

"Hardly. They're actually glad he's gone, given his history. It's IAB that I'm worried about," he said.

"Ah. They're looking for a reason to make someone a scapegoat in case your case goes belly up," Sue figured.

"Exactly. Benson is in with Carisi now trying to find out if they can survive a trial," the Sergeant said.

"How's Betty?" Sue wanted to know.

"No news is good news right now. She spent the night at the vets and they are monitoring her for the next few days at least. Detective Klass is a bit of a mess right now," Fin told her.

"I bet. What if the detectives and Betty hadn't been there?" Sue shivered at the thought.

"Yeah, it would not have been good. That's what makes me think that Dylan was more involved than he wanted to admit. He'd been researching Klass and he obviously knew where she lived," Fin shook his head.

"Yeah, that's not good," Sue frowned.

"Velasco and Stabler are tossing Dylan's place at the halfway house right now. We might get lucky with more evidence of Caitlin's guilt. Either way, it's going to be a long couple of days," Fin said. Sue nodded and wished the Sergeant good luck before he headed out of the lab doors. He was on his way to his car when his phone rang.

"What's up Liv?"

"Carisi is being taken off the case. Since he witnessed Dylan's statement, the DA is worried that the defense could call him as a witness," Olivia explained.

"Who are we getting then?" Fin asked.

"Executive ADA Price and ADA Maroun. Baxter promises they're the best," Olivia told him.

"Well, if Jack trusted them, then I think we can," Fin said, mentioning the former longtime DA Jack McCoy.

"I agree. I'm heading into a meeting with Price and Maroun. What can you give me from forensics?" The Captain wanted to know.

"Both Melinda and forensics say it's impossible to know which chest shot was the fatal one since they happened at roughly the same time. I think that puts Rollins in the clear. You hear anything from Stabler and Velasco?" Fin asked.

"No, they're my next call. Do me a favor and check in with Detective Klass. I know they say, 'no news is good news' but I'm guessing she could use reminding of that," Olivia said.

"I'll track her down," Fin promised and ended the call. He didn't think not hearing from the team at the halfway house was a good thing. There wasn't much to search in the first place. He heaved a sigh and got into his car.
