Chapter 8: Awakening Lightning
The early morning sunlight spilled through the windows of the academy classroom, casting a golden glow on the rows of desks. Raiko stretched his arms, feeling unusually energized. Today was the day Iruka-sensei promised to reveal their chakra affinities. Raiko had been looking forward to this ever since he first learned about the unique elemental powers shinobi could harness.
Iruka stood at the front of the room, holding a small stack of chakra papers. The class buzzed with excitement as he explained the process.
"Chakra affinity tests help us understand which elemental nature you are most suited to," Iruka began. "This doesn't mean you can't use other elements, but your affinity will give you a natural advantage when learning jutsu of that type."
The students leaned forward, eager to learn their results.
"All right," Iruka continued, holding up the first piece of paper. "When you channel your chakra into this paper, its reaction will reveal your affinity. If it burns, you have Fire. If it splits, it's Wind. If it wrinkles, it's Lightning. If it crumbles, it's Earth. And if it becomes damp, you have Water."
Raiko's hands tingled with anticipation as Iruka began calling students forward one by one. Sasuke, unsurprisingly, had a Fire affinity, which drew murmurs of admiration from the class. Naruto's paper split, revealing a Wind affinity, though he seemed more confused than excited.
Finally, Iruka called Raiko. "Your turn."
Raiko approached the front of the room, feeling the weight of the class's gaze. Iruka handed him the chakra paper, and Raiko held it carefully between his fingers. Taking a deep breath, he focused his chakra, sending it surging into the paper.
The paper wrinkled instantly, crumpling like dried leaves under pressure. A ripple of surprise swept through the room.
"Lightning," Iruka announced with a small smile. "That's a rare and powerful affinity. Well done, Raiko."
Raiko's heart swelled with pride, but he quickly masked his excitement, not wanting to look too smug.
As he returned to his seat, Iruka continued, "Raiko, since your affinity is Lightning, I'd recommend focusing on techniques that complement that nature. Lightning jutsu are known for their speed and piercing power, making them highly effective in combat. After class, come see me, and I'll suggest a few to get you started."
Raiko nodded eagerly. "Thank you, Iruka-sensei."
--
After class, Raiko stayed behind as Iruka pulled out a scroll filled with beginner jutsu.
"You should start with the basics," Iruka advised, unfurling the scroll. "There are a few E-rank and one D-rank Lightning jutsu that are perfect for someone at your level. I'd also recommend practicing your chakra control; it's crucial for handling Lightning techniques effectively."
Iruka handed him the scroll, and Raiko's eyes scanned the jutsu listed. The techniques included:
Static Shock (E-rank): A basic jutsu that sends a small shock through touch, useful for stunning opponents.
Static Shield (E-rank): A defensive jutsu that creates a faint electric barrier to deflect minor attacks.
Lightning Bolt (D-rank): A ranged attack that fires a small bolt of electricity toward a target.
"These should keep you busy," Iruka said. "The library has more detailed instructions on these techniques if you want to study further."
Raiko thanked Iruka and left the academy with a new sense of purpose.
--
That afternoon, Raiko headed to the library, clutching the scroll tightly. The village's library was quiet, filled with rows of shelves containing countless scrolls and books on shinobi techniques, history, and strategy.
Raiko approached the librarian, an elderly man with a kind smile. "Excuse me, do you have resources on Lightning-style jutsu? I'm looking to study some beginner techniques."
The librarian nodded and guided him to a section filled with elemental scrolls. Raiko's eyes lit up as he scanned the titles, eventually selecting a few that detailed chakra control exercises and Lightning-style fundamentals.
Finding a quiet corner, Raiko began poring over the scrolls. The instructions were intricate, detailing the hand signs, chakra flow, and concentration required for each technique. He decided to start with Static Shock, the simplest of the three.
The scroll explained that the jutsu relied on directing a small amount of chakra into the user's fingertips and converting it into an electrical charge. Raiko practiced forming the hand signs—Rat, Ox, and Dog—over and over until the motions felt natural.
"Focus," he muttered to himself, closing his eyes and visualizing his chakra as a current of electricity flowing through his body. He felt a faint tingling sensation in his fingertips and opened his eyes to see faint sparks crackling around them.
A grin spread across his face. "I did it!"
--
Raiko spent hours in the library, alternating between studying and practicing. By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, he had mastered Static Shock and was making progress with Static Shield.
Feeling the need to stretch his legs, Raiko decided to practice outside. He found a quiet clearing near his home, the perfect place to test his growing skills.
Raiko formed the hand signs for Static Shield, concentrating on spreading his chakra outward to form a barrier. At first, the shield was weak and flickered like a dying flame. But after several attempts, it stabilized into a faint, crackling dome of electricity.
"Not bad," Raiko muttered, wiping sweat from his brow.
Finally, he attempted Lightning Bolt, the most challenging of the three. The scroll described it as a short-range attack, requiring precise chakra control to shape and release the energy. Raiko struggled to form the bolt at first, but his determination drove him to keep trying.
After several failed attempts, he finally succeeded, releasing a small arc of electricity that struck a nearby tree. The bark sizzled where the bolt hit, leaving a faint scorch mark.
"Yes!" Raiko exclaimed, pumping his fist in triumph.
--
By the time Raiko returned home, he was exhausted but satisfied. His progress had exceeded his expectations, and he couldn't wait to show Iruka-sensei what he'd learned.
As he lay in bed that night, his mind raced with thoughts of what lay ahead. His Lightning affinity was a gift, one he was determined to master. And with each jutsu he learned, he felt one step closer to his dream of becoming a shinobi worthy of protecting those he cared about.
Raiko closed his eyes, a small smile on his lips. Tomorrow would be another day of training, another step on his journey. But for now, he allowed himself a moment of rest, his dreams filled with sparks of lightning dancing in the shadows.
--
The next morning, Raiko woke early, eager to test his skills after a full night's rest. He spent the morning in the clearing, running through each jutsu until they felt natural, his movements fluid and precise. Static Shock became second nature, crackling at his fingertips with ease. Static Shield now formed almost instantly, its crackling barrier sturdy and protective. Even Lightning Bolt, his most challenging technique, was sharper and more focused, the arcs of electricity leaping toward his targets with pinpoint accuracy.
Raiko felt a surge of pride. He was ready for a real challenge.
--
After lunch, Raiko returned to the academy training grounds, where some of his classmates were already gathered. Sasuke stood near the center, casually practicing his shuriken throws. His precision was unmatched, the spinning blades striking the bullseye each time.
Naruto, watching from the sidelines, huffed. "Show-off," he muttered.
Raiko approached, his confidence brimming. Sasuke noticed him and raised an eyebrow.
"You've been practicing something new," Sasuke said, his tone neutral but curious.
Raiko smirked. "You could say that. Want to spar?"
The training ground went quiet. Naruto perked up, while Sakura gasped. "Raiko, are you serious?" she asked.
"Why not?" Raiko replied, stretching his arms. "I've been working on a few things. Let's see how I measure up."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed, a flicker of interest crossing his face. "Fine. Don't hold back."
--
The two faced off in the center of the training ground, their classmates forming a loose circle around them. Iruka, who had been overseeing the practice, stepped forward to referee.
"Keep it to non-lethal techniques," Iruka instructed. "This is a spar, not a real battle."
Raiko and Sasuke nodded, their gazes locked.
"Begin!" Iruka called.
Sasuke moved first, closing the gap between them with blinding speed. Raiko barely had time to dodge as Sasuke's kunai swiped past him.
Raiko leapt back, forming the hand signs for Static Shock. When Sasuke lunged again, Raiko ducked under the attack and placed his hand on Sasuke's arm. A jolt of electricity surged through Sasuke, causing him to flinch and stumble back.
"What was that?" Sasuke asked, his tone sharp.
"Lightning-style jutsu," Raiko replied, grinning. "Let's see how you handle it."
Sasuke's expression shifted to one of determination. "Don't get cocky."
He launched a series of shuriken, forcing Raiko to activate Static Shield. The crackling barrier deflected most of the projectiles, though one managed to slip through, grazing Raiko's shoulder.
Ignoring the sting, Raiko countered with Lightning Bolt, sending a sharp arc of electricity toward Sasuke. Sasuke barely dodged, his movements quick and calculated.
The fight continued, each boy pushing the other to their limits. Sasuke's speed and precision kept Raiko on edge, while Raiko's Lightning-style techniques gave him an unpredictable edge.
As the spar reached its climax, Raiko managed to feint to the left, catching Sasuke off-guard. He placed his hand on Sasuke's shoulder, channeling Static Shock just enough to stun him. Sasuke staggered but quickly recovered, attempting one final counterattack.
Before either could land another blow, Iruka stepped in. "That's enough!" he called.
The two boys stepped back, breathing heavily. Sasuke's dark eyes studied Raiko for a moment before he gave a small nod.
"You're better than I thought," Sasuke admitted, his tone grudging but sincere. "Your jutsu... it's impressive."
Raiko, still catching his breath, managed a smile. "You're not bad yourself. Fast, too."
Sasuke smirked faintly. "Don't get used to beating me. Next time, I won't lose."
"We'll see about that," Raiko replied, his confidence unwavering.
As the spectators dispersed, Raiko felt a sense of accomplishment. Not only had he held his own against Sasuke, but he had also earned a sliver of the Uchiha's respect.
Naruto bounded over, grinning. "That was awesome! I mean, Sasuke still looked cool, but you were amazing, Raiko!"
Raiko chuckled, patting Naruto on the shoulder. "Thanks, Naruto. I've still got a lot to learn, but this was a good start."
As the sun began to set, Raiko walked home with renewed determination. He knew his journey as a shinobi was just beginning, but with each battle and every new jutsu, he felt closer to achieving his dreams. And for now, that was more than enough.
