The group had left the labyrinth behind, but the atmosphere was not as relaxed as they had hoped. Although the heart of the labyrinth was saved, the air around the castle seemed heavy with something invisible. Sarah felt it first - a feeling like she was being watched.
"Is everything ok?" Jareth asked, looking at her worriedly as they walked up the stairs to the castle.
Sarah nodded, but she couldn't shake the unease. "It just feels... strange," she admitted. "Like something's wrong."
Before Jareth could answer, the silence was broken by a sudden, bright voice.
"Jareth! My dearest Jareth!"
Everyone turned, and Sarah's eyes narrowed as she saw the figure approaching them. A tall Fae woman, dressed in shimmering silver, moved with an elegance that made her seem almost unearthly. Her hair, a brilliant white with a hint of blue, fell in waves over her shoulders, and her ice-blue eyes were fixed on Jareth.
"Oh no," Jareth murmured, slumping his shoulders.
"Who is that?" Sarah asked, her voice cool.
"That's Calypsa," Jareth said quietly. "An…old acquaintance."
"An old acquaintance?" Sarah repeated, but her voice dripped with suspicion.
Calypsa reached the group, ignoring everyone but Jareth. She stood in front of him, a wide smile on her lips, and placed a hand on his chest. "It's been so long, my love. You've missed me, haven't you?"
Jareth took a step back, his expression tense. "Calypsa, this is neither the place nor the time for such a thing."
"Not the place?" she repeated, feigning surprise. "But Jareth, you and I are meant for each other. Why are you hiding here with these...humans?" Her gaze flicked disparagingly to Sarah and Debbie.
Sarah felt her anger rising, but Debbie stepped forward before she could say anything. "Whoever you are," Debbie began, her voice firm, "I would be very careful how you speak to Sarah."
Calypsa turned to Debbie, her smile widening. "Ah, best friend. It's so sweet how humans think they matter here."
"Listen, you shimmering diva," Debbie snapped. "I don't know what your problem is, but Sarah and Jareth belong together, whether you like it or not."
Calypsa laughed softly, a cold, ringing sound. "Oh, my dear, naive girl. You know nothing about the Fae. Jareth is mine. He always knew it, and I will not let anyone - especially not a human - take him away from me."
"I never belonged to you, Calypsa," Jareth interrupted, his voice calm but firm. "And I never will. The connection you imagine exists only in your head."
Calypsa's face hardened, and her eyes narrowed dangerously. "We shall see," she hissed. "I have waited, Jareth. Years, decades. And now that I see how far you have fallen. How can you get involved with humans? It is beneath you."
Sarah wanted to answer, but Debbie stepped forward again, her eyes full of determination. "Sarah is worth more than any Fae I have ever met," she said coolly. "And she has something you will never have: Jareth's heart."
Calypsa turned to Jareth with an incredulous smile. "Is that true? Have you really lost your heart to a human?"
Jareth looked at Sarah, his eyes soft and full of affection. "Yes," he said without hesitation. "I love Sarah. And nothing - not even you, Calypsa - will change that."
The words hit Calypsa like a blow. For a moment she seemed speechless, her facade crumbling. But then the cold smile returned. "As you say, Jareth. But I won't give up."
She turned to Sarah. "Don't you know how Fae love works? We can only fall in love once in our lives. Once. And once it happens, we can't undo that love - whether it's reciprocated or not."
Her gaze fell on Jareth again. "I fell in love with you, Jareth. So many years ago. And I thought you felt the same about me. But instead..." Her voice sharpened. "Instead, you love her."
Sarah wanted to say something, but Jareth put a hand on her arm as a sign that he would clarify. "Calypsa, I won't be able to tell you otherwise. I'm sorry that you're suffering. But Sarah is the one who has my heart - she always has been. And she always will be."
The words cut Calypsa deep. "I won't accept it," she hissed before disappearing in a swirl of light and shadow.
The group remained silent, the tension almost palpable.
"That was... intense," Lorien murmured, giving Debbie a reassuring look.
Debbie nodded and turned to Sarah. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice quieter. Sarah nodded slowly, but her gaze remained fixed on Jareth. "Yes, but I want to know who she is."
Jareth sighed and walked over to her. "Calypsa is a memory from a time I left behind long ago. She never accepted that I didn't love her - and now she's trying to tear us apart."
"She won't be able to do that," Sarah said determinedly.
Debbie looked back and forth between the two of them and she felt her last doubts about Jareth disappear. She had seen how sincere he was, how deep his feelings for Sarah were. There was nothing left that she could question about him.
"What now?" Lorien finally asked.
Jareth looked at Sarah, a faint smile on his lips. "Now we face the past together and prove that it no longer has a place in our future."
