Death and the Devil
The forest planet was alive with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant bird calls. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, painting the ground with a dappled glow. A few months had passed, and Lylla, Teefs, and Floor were between missions at the moment. They had saved hostages, captured criminals, recovered stolen goods, and done other such odd jobs. However, they still had no luck finding Rocket. But right now, they were just relaxing.
They wandered along a narrow trail through the forest. Teefs, with a large woven basket on the end of one cybernetic arm, excitedly listed off the recipes he planned to try once they got back to their ship.
"I'm tellin' ya," Teefs said, his mechanical arm gesturing animatedly, "roast root stew with wild spice pods? It'll be divine! And if we can find some vineberries, I'll make a dessert that'll knock your tails off."
Floor hopped alongside him, her smaller frame weaving between the trees. "Oooh, we put crunchy nuts on top! Those are best!"
Lylla chuckled softly, adjusting her satchel. "Let's find the ingredients first, chefs. We can argue about toppings later."
They rounded a bend in the trail, and suddenly, a tall figure stepped out from the trees. The stranger's presence was immediate and unsettling, despite his friendly gaze. He was humanoid, with sharp black hair that gleamed like polished obsidian. His long red cloak swirled around him, the fabric seeming to ripple unnaturally. His smile was charming, almost disarmingly so, and his eyes glinted with an otherworldly light.
"Greetings, my friends," the figure said, his voice smooth as silk. "What a pleasant surprise to find travelers of your caliber in such a remote place."
Lylla's fur bristled subtly, though she kept her composure. "And who might you be?" she asked carefully.
The figure bowed elegantly, "You may call me Mephisto. I understand you've been searching for someone—a certain Rocket Raccoon, yes?"
Floor gasped, her antennae twitching excitedly. "Mephisto know Rocket? Mephisto take us to him?"
"How did you know we were looking for him?" Lylla asked, feeling slightly alarmed, "We don't know you."
Mephisto's smile widened. "You've asked for Rocket across the galaxy. You have your own cantina where you are well known. Is it a surprise that I could have learned of you and your search?"
Teefs nodded, "He's got a point, Lylla."
"Of course!" Mephisto said pleasantly,"Now, I will reunite you with your friends. But as with all things, such a favor comes at a price."
Lylla's ears flicked, her unease growing. "A price? What exactly do you mean?"
Mephisto spread his hands in a gesture of casual diplomacy. "Nothing drastic. I simply ask for your loyalty—a bond, if you will. In exchange, I will lead you straight to your friend."
Floor practically bounced with excitement. "That easy! Rocket's worth it!"
Teefs, however, frowned, "Hold on a minute. What kind of bond are we talkin' about here? You're bein' awfully vague, mister."
Lylla's eyes narrowed. "Exactly. We were offered a whole new world by someone once, and things didn't end well for us. Why should we trust you?"
Mephisto's eyes gleamed with something unreadable. "Trust, my dear Lylla, is an overrated concept. All I ask is for you to follow me, and your reunion with Rocket will be assured."
Lylla crossed her arms, her skepticism hardening. "That's not an answer. What do you really want?"
Mephisto chuckled, the sound low and rich. "Must you ask so many questions? I merely desire a connection, a simple agreement. Perhaps you don't care about Rocket as much as you claim."
Lylla's patience snapped, and she stepped forward, her tone sharp. "Enough with the riddles. Tell me exactly what you want, or we're done here."
The charm in Mephisto's expression evaporated, replaced by a flicker of irritation. His voice turned cold. "You are being far too difficult. I can give you a great destiny. Your souls will be in strong, capable hands."
Lylla froze, her heart racing as a chill ran down her spine. Her hand instinctively went to her laser pistol within her robes. "Our souls? You're out of your mind. You'll never have them."
Mephisto's smile twisted into a snarl, his eyes flaring with anger. "How ungrateful. I offer you the one thing you want more than anything, and you spit in my face. There will be consequences for this insult, I assure you."
With a dramatic swish of his cloak, Mephisto vanished into the shadows, the trees swallowing him whole. The forest fell silent, the weight of his presence lingering like a suffocating fog.
Floor looked up at Lylla, her wide eyes filled with a mixture of fear and guilt. "Did… did we mess up?"
Teefs shook his head, "No, Floor. That guy was bad news. Lylla did the right thing."
Lylla exhaled shakily, her paw still resting on her holstered pistol. "We need to get back to the ship. Whatever he was planning, we can't let it catch us off guard."
The three of them turned and hurried back along the trail, the once-inviting forest now feeling like a labyrinth of hidden eyes and whispering shadows.
The forest path was bathed in twilight by the time the trio were back in the vicinity of The Raccoon. The eerie silence that followed Mephisto's departure had not lifted, and each rustle of the leaves set their nerves on edge. Just as the ship came into view, the air ahead of them rippled violently, tearing open into a swirling, blackened portal. A cold wind rushed through, sending fallen leaves spinning into the air.
Out of the void stepped a woman, her long dark hair cascading like a shadowy veil around her pale face. She wore black, hooded robes that seemed to absorb the light around her. A small, curved dagger twirled lazily in her fingers as if it were an extension of her hand. Her cold, unblinking gaze swept over the trio, lingering on each of them before she smirked.
"You shouldn't be alive," she said, her voice as smooth and sharp as glass. She tilted her head, studying them like they were curiosities in a display case. "But don't worry. I'll remedy that."
Lylla instinctively stepped forward, placing herself protectively between the woman and her friends. "Did Mephisto send you? Are you a bounty hunter?" she demanded, her hand hovering near her holstered pistol.
The woman's expression twisted in disdain. "Mephisto? Please. I take orders from no one—not Mephisto, not Agatha, not anyone."
Teefs cocked his head. "Wait, who's Agatha?"
Lylla shot him a look. "Teefs, not the time!"
The woman sighed as though bored by the exchange. "Enough of this. It is time to put you three back where you belong."
With a wave of her hand, the ground beneath them cracked and split. Thick, thorny vines erupted from the earth, writhing like serpents. They lashed out toward the group, snapping and twisting with unnatural speed. Teefs roared and swung his mechanical arms, smashing the vines back as they lunged for him. "Get off me, ya overgrown weeds!" he shouted.
Floor shrieked as a vine coiled around her midsection, yanking her into the air. She flailed, desperately swinging her tasers at the relentless tendrils. "Help! Help! Bad plants! Bad plants!"
Lylla fired her laser pistol, the blue bolts slicing through the vine holding Floor. "I've got you, Floor!" she called, catching the cyborg bunny as she dropped.
The reprieve was short-lived. The woman surged forward, her dagger gleaming as she lunged for Lylla. The otter barely had time to react, raising her pistol in a defensive motion.
"No!" Floor cried, leaping toward the woman with her tasers crackling to life. She thrust them forward, aiming for the figure's chest.
But the woman moved with inhuman speed. She caught the tasers mid-swing, her hands closing over the sparking metal prongs. Her eyes glowed faintly as her hands began to shimmer, a sickly green light crawling up the tasers and surging into Floor.
Floor screamed as the electricity reversed, coursing back through her body. Sparks flew, and she crumpled to the ground, twitching and whimpering in pain.
"Floor!" Lylla shouted in horror.
Teefs bellowed in rage, activating his plasma shield and charging at the woman like a battering ram. For a moment, it seemed like he had the upper hand. But wiith a single, fluid motion, she brought her dagger down, slicing cleanly through the plasma shield as if it were made of paper. Before Teefs could react, she spun and delivered a vicious kick to his chest. He flew backward, slamming into a tree with a sickening crack and slumping to the ground.
Lylla's heart pounded as she opened fire on the woman, each shot hitting its mark. The force of the blasts knocked the woman to the ground, and Lylla's hopes rose for a fleeting moment.
But then the woman rose slowly, completely unharmed. Her robes were pristine, her expression calm. It was as if nothing had touched her.
"Bad lady!" Floor whimpered weakly, pulling herself to her feet despite the pain. "Bad, evil lady!"
The woman shook her head, "Evil? No, little one. I am not evil. I am the natural order of things."
She turned her gaze back to Lylla, who was frozen in place, her pistol trembling in her hands. "Do you know what I am?" she asked, her voice low and deliberate. "I was there the day the High Evolutionary and his guards shot you down. I was there to claim you. But then I was robbed of what was mine."
Lylla's breath caught as the woman's face began to shift, her features dissolving like smoke. Beneath the illusion, a skeletal visage emerged, gleaming white with a hollow nose and exposed teeth. A undeniably terrifying countenance.
"She's not a bounty hunter," Lylla whispered, "She's Death."
Teefs groaned from where he lay slumped against the tree, his mechanical arms twitching as he struggled to rise. "What do ya mean?" he asked, "Like, she's going to kill us?"
"No, no, no. I mean, literally. She's Death," Lylla said, "Straight up."
Floor's fur stood on end, and she clung to Lylla's side, trembling.
"Stop struggling," Death said, the eyes in her skeletal features blazing, "You have delayed the inevitable long enough. Accept your fate. It is time."
Lylla's breath came in short gasps, her mind a whirlwind of fear. She glanced at Teefs and Floor, her family, her crew. This couldn't be how it ended. But how could they fight Death itself?
"Lylla," Teefs muttered, his voice heavy with resignation. "We... we can't win this. It's over for us."
Floor's ears drooped as she looked up at Lylla, her large eyes brimming with fear. "Teefs right. Can't beat Death. Floor no wanna go, but... Floor think we gotta."
Lylla's chest tightened as she looked between her friends. She saw the despair weighing on them, the fight draining from their spirits. But she also felt something deeper—something that flickered like a faint ember: hope. And a desire to accomplish the thing they all had their hearts set on the moment they came back to life.
"No," Lylla said firmly, her voice cutting through the silence. "We're not giving up. Not here, not now."
Teefs shook his head, his mechanical arms twitching as he tried to steady them. "Lylla, be real. We can't beat Death. Ain't no way outta this one."
Lylla stepped forward, her gaze sharp and unyielding as she met Teefs' eyes. "We already have, Teefs. We already beat her once when we came back. Don't you see? We weren't supposed to survive those gunshots, but we're alive. We've been beating Death every day since then. And you think Rocket would just roll over and let himself die if he were in our placs?"
Teefs hesitated, his expression softening as he glanced at the ground. Floor perked up slightly at the mention of Rocket, her antennae twitching.
"Rocket wouldn't give up," Lylla continued, her voice rising with determination. "Rocket would fight, no matter how hopeless it seemed. And so will we. Not just for him, but for ourselves. Because we deserve to live. We've fought too hard, we've come too far, and we've been through too much to give up now."
Floor's trembling slowed, and she straightened slightly, her eyes wide. "Lylla mean... we don't have to just let her win? We still fight?"
"Yes," Lylla said, her voice firm. "It might be impossible to truly defeat Death, but that doesn't mean we can't fight to keep living. We've done it before, and we can do it again. As long as we keep fighting, we haven't lost."
Teefs let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as a small grin crept onto his face. "Well, when you put it like that... Guess I ain't ready to throw in the towel just yet."
Floor's antennae twitched, and she bounced on her cybernetic legs, her fear replaced with eager determination. "Me neither! Floor no die without a fight!"
Lylla smiled, her heart swelling with pride at the sight of her friends standing tall again. She reached into her robes and pulled out her iPod, scrolling through the playlist until she found the perfect song. She held it up and pressed play. The opening notes of "Survivor" by Destiny's Child filled the air, the defiant beat echoing through the forest.
Floor's antennae twitched, and she giggled mischievously as she connected to the iPod. The song blasted through the speaker in her mask, the sound bold and unrelenting.
I'm a survivor
I'm not gon' give up
I'm not gon' stop, oh
I'm gon' work harder
Lylla raised her pistol, a fierce glint in her eye. "We fight for Rocket. We fight for each other. And we fight to live. Let's show her what Batch 89 is made of!"
Teefs pounded his robotic limbs together, "Now that's what I'm talkin' about. Let's do this!"
Floor crouched low, her tasers crackling as she nodded.
The three of them stood shoulder to shoulder, the song blaring around them like an anthem. Death watched them, her skeletal face impassive, though her eyes seemed to narrow slightly.
Lylla, Teefs, and Floor braced themselves as the air grew colder, their breaths visible in the chilling fog. The ground beneath them trembled as Death's power surged, and the forest seemed to darken around them.
But Batch 89 didn't flinch. Together, they stood strong, ready to fight with every ounce of strength they had left.
I'm the survivor
I'm gonna make it
I will survive
Keep on survivin'
And with that, Death lunged forward, her dagger gleaming as the battle began anew.
The forest seemed to twist and darken as Death loomed before them, her skeletal visage an unrelenting reminder of their mortality. The tension in the air was suffocating, and even the rhythmic beat of "Survivor" blasting from Floor's mask couldn't cut through the dread.
Thought I couldn't breathe without you
I'm inhaling
You thought I couldn't see without you
Perfect vision
You thought I couldn't last without you
But I'm lastin'
You thought that I would die without you
But I'm livin'
Lylla darted forward, her heart hammering in her chest as she slid between Death's legs, narrowly avoiding the sharp arc of the dagger. The cold air around Death seemed to burn, and Lylla could feel the searing heat of dark magic radiating from her enemy as she rolled to her feet, pistol raised. "Keep moving! Don't let her pin you down!" she yelled.
Floor, still crackling with defiance, leaped into the fray with her tasers sparking wildly. "Take this, spooky lady!" she cried, her voice trembling with both fear and adrenaline. But before she could land a blow, Death raised a hand, and a whirlwind exploded from her fingertips. The wind howled like a dying scream, catching Floor mid-leap and hurling her into the air. Her small body flailed as she was tossed like a ragdoll, her yelp of surprise turning into a panicked scream.
"Floor!" Teefs roared, his cybernetic wheels grinding against the forest floor as he rolled in with his plasma shield. Death didn't even flinch as she slashed her dagger downward, slicing through the shield once again. But Teefs was ready this time. He rolled sideways, letting his momentum carry him into a spin, and swung his cybernetic arm with all his strength. The blow connected with a sickening crack, sending Death spinning briefly.
Thought that I would fail without you
But I'm on top
Thought it would be over by now
But it won't stop
Thought that I would self destruct
But I'm still here
Even in my years to come
I'm still gon' be here
Lylla seized the opportunity, her paws trembling as she aimed and fired her pistol at Death's midsection. The energy bolts struck her, knocking her to the ground with a heavy thud. For a moment, hope flickered in Lylla's chest—maybe, just maybe, they were getting somewhere.
But Death rose without a sound, her feet never touching the ground as she levitated back into an upright position. Her movements were unnervingly fluid, as if gravity itself had no claim on her. He eyes locked onto Teefs, and with a flick of her wrist, a continuous stream of fire erupted from her hand, rushing toward him like a vengeful inferno.
Teefs' plasma shield flickered back to life just in time, the energy field absorbing the brunt of the flames. "This ain't gonna hold forever!" he shouted, his voice strained as he braced against the heat.
Meanwhile, Floor plummeted from the whirlwind, her mask sparking as she hit the ground. She groaned, shaking herself off before bolting toward Death once more. But before she could get close, vines erupted from the earth, their thorny tendrils coiling around her six cybernetic legs like snakes. "No! No, no, no!" Floor screamed at the vines as they tightened their grip.
Lylla gritted her teeth and fired again, but this time, Death raised her free hand and unleashed a barrage of green energy blasts. Each shot collided with Lylla's, neutralizing them with an explosive crack. Then, with a sharp gesture, Death's telekinetic grip wrenched the gun from Lylla's paws and flung it into the shadows.
Death surged forward, her dagger gleaming as she aimed for Lylla's chest. Lylla's breath hitched as the blade descended, but before it could reach her, a desperate scream rang out.
"Get away from friend!" Floor shrieked, her tasers flaring as she burned through the vines. With a burst of speed, she leaped at Death, her mask snapping open to clamp down on the arm holding the dagger. Sparks flew as the mask's metal teeth bit into the arm, and the stream of fire aimed at Teefs sputtered and died.
Teefs roared, seizing the moment to charge forward, his wheels kicking up dirt as he barreled toward Death. But before he could close the gap, more vines erupted from the ground, carrying a massive boulder that hurtled toward him. The rock slammed into his face with a deafening crunch, snapping both of his tusks off and sending him sprawling to the ground.
"Teefs!" Lylla screamed, her voice cracking as she lunged at Death. Her heart ached as she saw her friends suffering, but she refused to let despair take hold. She swung her cybernetic arms with all her might, but Death's telekinesis caught them mid-air, twisting them painfully behind her back. Lylla cried out as she felt the metal joints straining under the pressure.
Death turned her attention to Floor, telekinetically prying her mask open with an eerie calmness. With a flick of her wrist, she dropped the small bunny to the ground and forced her to tase herself. Sparks danced across Floor's body as she convulsed, her screams tearing through the forest.
Lylla's vision blurred with tears as Death slammed her into the ground, over and over, each impact rattling her bones. Pain coursed through her body, but she refused to let it break her. When Death finally released her, she lay on the cold earth, gasping for air, her body trembling.
Death stood over them, silent and unmoving, her hollow gaze sweeping across the battered trio. For a moment, there was only the sound of labored breathing and the faint crackle of Floor's damaged tasers.
But then, with an almost supernatural resolve, Lylla pushed herself up onto her knees. Teefs groaned as he rolled onto his side, blood dripping from his mouth and running down his broken tusks, while Floor, shaky but determined, got back up as well.
They stood together, bruised and battered but unbroken, their eyes locked onto Death with a defiance that burned brighter than any flame.
The air was heavy with tension, the forest holding its breath as the fight paused on a knife's edge. Death tilted her head, her voice cold. "Why do you persist? Your time has come."
Lylla wiped blood from her lip and met Death's gaze, her voice steady despite the pain. "Because we're more than survivors. We're fighters. And we're not done yet."
The forest seemed to hold its breath as Death loomed over the battered trio. Her dark robes billowed around her like a stormcloud, her skeletal face etched with a growing sense of displeasure. Lylla, Teefs, and Floor stood slowly, swaying unsteadily on their feet, their injuries visible and their breaths ragged. Yet, despite the pain, they stared at her with defiant eyes.
Death raised her hand, and without warning, twin whirlwinds erupted from the ground. They roared with unrelenting force, catching Lylla and Floor off guard. The two were hurled into the air, spiraling helplessly before being slammed together with a sickening thud. They cried out in pain as they crumpled to the ground in a heap, tangled and disoriented.
Teefs growled, shaking off the blood trickling down his face, and tried to charge forward. But before he could reach her, a thick vine lashed out like a whip, cracking against his skull with enough force to send him sprawling backward. He groaned as his head hit the ground, the world spinning around him.
For a brief moment, there was silence. Death's hollow eyes scanned the fallen trio, as if waiting for them to stay down this time. But then, slowly and painfully, they began to rise once more. Lylla pushed herself up on trembling arms, her fur matted with blood and dirt. Floor shook off the lingering disorientation and dug her metal legs into the ground to steady herself. Teefs grunted as he rolled onto his side and struggled onto his wheels, his resolve unshaken.
Death's bony fingers twitched as she watched them. "What is wrong with you?" she asked, her voice sharp and cold. She didn't wait for an answer. With a casual flick of her wrist, she tore an entire tree from the ground, roots snapping and dirt scattering everywhere. Without hesitation, she swung the massive trunk like a club, sending Lylla and Floor tumbling across the forest floor like leaves in a storm.
Teefs roared and charged again, but Death hurled the tree directly at him. It hit with a thunderous crash, pinning him to the ground.
"You are broken, beaten, and bleeding," she said, "Why do you resist? Surrender. End this futile struggle."
But to her amazement, the three of them began to stir yet again. Lylla and Floor had staggered their way back to Teefs' side. They shoved the tree off of Teefs. Lylla's expression was tight with pain but unwavering. Floor staggered to her feet, her legs shaking but her antennae twitching with renewed determination. Teefs growled low in his throat, shaking blood from his nose as he stood once more.
Death stared at them, unmoving. Her skeletal face betrayed no emotion, but the stillness in her posture spoke volumes. Finally, she tilted her head ever so slightly, a flicker of something unreadable in her gaze.
"You are... valuable," she said, her voice softer now, almost contemplative. She let the words hang in the air, heavy with meaning. "I see now why HE values you so."
Lylla blinked, her breath hitching. "What are you talking about?" she asked hoarsely.
Death ignored the question, her gaze shifting toward the horizon as though she could see beyond the physical world. Her voice dripped with disdain as she spoke, "You mentioned Mephisto earlier. As it turns out, he is planning something that will destroy the natural order. If you make an effort to stop his plan—and succeed—then all debts between us will be considered paid in full."
The trio exchanged confused, wary glances. Teefs was the first to break the silence. "What kind of plan? What's he gonna do?" he rasped, his voice rough from exhaustion.
Death's eyes flicked back to them. "You'll know it," she said simply. "And you'll be there when it happens."
Lylla's voice trembled as she spoke, "Why can't you just tell us?"
Death's hand tightened on the hilt of her dagger. "It is not my role to guide you," she said.
Floor scowled, her antennae twitching with frustration. "Death real bad, cryptic lady," she muttered.
Death ignored her. With a smooth motion, she raised her dagger and slashed through the air. Another jagged portal of swirling black and green energy tore open before her, its edges crackling with an eerie light. She stepped toward it but paused just before entering, her skeletal face turning back to regard them one last time.
"Do not fail," she said. "If you do, I will be there to claim what is mine." And with that, she stepped into the portal and vanished, the rip in reality sealing itself behind her with a hollow boom.
The forest fell silent again, save for the rustling of leaves in the faint breeze. Lylla sank to her knees, her head hanging low as she struggled to catch her breath. Floor flopped onto her back, groaning as she poked at her sparking mask. Teefs leaned heavily against a tree, his tusks snapped and his body bruised.
Lylla looked at her friends, her heart swelling with pride despite the fear gnawing at her chest. "We'll figure this out. Together," she said softly.
And as the three of them sat there, battered but unbroken, they couldn't help but wonder what new horrors lay ahead.
"It was just as you said. They don't give up. They are determined to not even entertain the idea of not reunited with their friend while they are still alive."
"Of course. They love him, after all. That is why I resurrected them and disregarded your complaints."
"Yes. Love. Your greatest and only weapon."
"Do not act as though you do not understand it's power, Green Witch. Your feelings for Agatha were real."
"Enough. . . What of Mephisto? You have not told me the detail of his machinations. How will that demon summon. . . it. . ."
"Just as they will know it and be at the right place at the right time, so will you."
Author's Notes:
I have not seen nor will ever watch Agatha All Along, but I suppose I owe it for helping to inspire me to continue this story. I used the MCU wiki for research for the fight against Death. If not for that show, this chapter would probably not have been as interesting.
The groundwork has been laid for this story's finale, but it's still very far away. There is so much more story left to tell! I left the hints vague, but it's possible you might guess who the final boss will be.
