"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new."

-Socrates.

"This is Berk. For generations, it was Viking against dragon. The battles were ferocious... then one day, everything changed." Hiccup flies in on Toothless. "I met Toothless, and together we've shown people here that instead of fighting dragons, we can ride them... live with them, even train them." They land on a sea stack where Astrid, Kellen, Yang, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Weiss and their dragons are waiting for them.

"Okay, guys. Best Trick Competition. Who's up first?" Hiccup asked, positioning himself next to Kellen and Astrid. "Uh…" Fishlegs tries to talk but Snotlout interrupts him, showing off his big ego.

"Me!"

"Actually, I think it's–"

"Me!" Snotlout yells even louder, cutting Fishlegs off again.

"Sweet baby Thor in a thunderstorm, GO!" Astrid grew tired of this and pointed ahead for him to go.

"Oh, don't worry, we'll go. And when we go, Hookfang and I are gonna light the sky on–" Snotlout's Monstrous Nightmare, Hookfang, plummets off the sea stack, scaring an unprepared Snotlout. "-FIRE! Oh, no!" Hookfang then flies around, through the sea stacks, even scraping Snotlout's helmet, making Snotlout scream through the whole thing. Hookfang flies up and then dives into the ocean, muffling Snotlout's screams. Then, resurfacing, Hookfang lands back on the sea stack, between Yang and Fishlegs. "I'm alive...? I'm alive!" Snotlout checks himself before raising his arms up in excitement, forgetting the other riders.

The other Riders stare at him, blankly. Some even laugh, mainly both sets of twins (which I mean the Branwen twins and the Thorston twins). Snotlout then realizes the others are watching him and puts up his tough act again. "Of course I am."

"It's my turn! Ready, Meatlug? Here we go!" Fishlegs then pulls the attention to him, not caring for Snotlout's embarrassment. Fishlegs' Gronckle, Meatlug, takes off, flies around in a simple circle, then lands."Yes! New personal best!" Fishlegs also ignores the looks the others give him as he hugs Meatlug.

"No offense, Fishlegs, but this is a trick competition. Not a slow flying competition." Yang pointed out.

"Hey, at least he has a dragon. I don't even have one, all thanks to a certain someone!" Weiss shoots Kellen a dirty look, still mad over the fact she doesn't have a dragon.

Kellen raises his arms in self defence, "Hey, I told you I will help you get a dragon. It's just there weren't enough dragons in the arena for all of us."

"Enough about who doesn't have a dragon. It's my turn." Tuffnut interrupted, not caring about Weiss' complaining.

"No, my turn!"
"No, my turn!"

"Guys, same dragon." Hiccup pointed out.

"Oh, right." Ruff and Tuff fistbump and their Hideous Zippleback, Barf and Belch, take off, but then the Twins begin to argue on which way they should go. "Go left!"

"No, right!"

"N-no, right!"

"No, left!" The two kept making their dragon's head going the way they wanted to, not noticing how they were heading right into a sea stack. Luckily, then bump their dragon's head into each other, making them narrowly miss colliding into another sea stack. This, though, now caused them to start spinning, holding onto the horns of the dragon. Barf and Belch suddenly fling the Twins off their necks and high into the air.

"OH, NO! WHOA! THIS IS AWESOME AND SCARY! AAAH!" Tuffnut shouted as he and his sister fell closer and closer to the ocean. Barf and Belch then catch the Twins before they crash into the ocean becoming a bloody soup, then fling them up, and back onto their necks. They then land on the sea stack next to Fishlegs and Weiss.

"We almost died!" Ruffnut stated, laying down with a smile.

"Yeah, I know... go again?!" Tuffnut replied, both now sitting up ready to go.

"Hey! It's my turn!" Astrid shouted to the twins, before looking over to Kellen and Hiccup. "You might wanna take notes. Let's go! Yah!" Kellen just eyed rolled at Astrid while Hiccup had a smirk on his face.

Astrid and her Deadly Nadder, Stormfly, shoot off the sea stack, and fly down towards the ocean. "Okay, Stormfly, tail flip!" Stormfly flips her tail into the water, spraying water everywhere before lifting it back up. "Now twirl!" Stormfly follows her command and barrel rolls, shooting forward. "Quick, upwards spiral!" They finish their routine with a final spin, high into the air. "Alright, Stormfly!"

As she lands back on the sea stack, the other Riders congratulate her performance. "Yeah, but can you do it without the dragon?" She gives Yang a look, making the girl nod, then punches Snotlout in the shoulder for Astrid. "Ow!"

"You really know how to treat a girl Snotface." Yang replied, making some of the other riders laugh at the nickname. "Let me show you what a girl can do better than you."

Yang and her Singetail, Ember, take off, flying above them rather than everyone else. Ember flies up for a while before she stops to glide, only relying on the wind. "Okay girl, meteor shower." Ember then shouts out a fire ball from her mouth and three from her tail, all heading to the ocean. Then Ember dives down, flying in between the fireballs. She then starts to spin, hitting the fireballs with her wings and making them crash into sea stacks around them. Yang then jumps off Ember, doing several backflips before landing back on Ember, heading back to the sea stack.

As She lands back on the sea stack, the other Riders congratulate her performance, just like they did Astrid. Astrid then high fives her, while Kellen just rolls his eyes. "Not bad sis, not bad. But I think we can do better. Can't we Surge?" Surge growls in agreement as Kellen gets off.

"You know, I think Snotlout did have a point. About can you do that without the dragon. So, for Snotlout's sake, I'm going to start without Surge. See you soon." Everyone looks confused, especially Snotlout, wondering how Snotlout could be right. They are then answered with backflipping off the sea stack, without a care in the world. Everyone looks shocked, then turns to Surge to see if he does anything. To which the dragon looks perfectly calm.

After a couple of seconds, the dragon took off after Kellen. Kellen was now spreading out his body, making as much drag as possible, before landing gently on Surge as the two continued to fly down. Surge then pulls up at the last moment, making the water to slightly make a v shape as the two fly. Surge flips upside down, making Kellen underwater as the fly. Then, after another couple of seconds, Surge starts to fly higher, still upside down though. Kellen then starts to climb onto Surge's stomach, standing up straight, then runs off him. Surge then makes a U-turn down, flipping himself back over as Kellen lands perfectly in his saddle. Then they fly up to a Sea stack, shooting a lightning blast at it and making it fall apart. Surge grabs one of the falling broken pieces, throwing it up before Kellen jumps off of Surge again, landing and jumping off of the rock, doing a frontflip as he lands back on Surge. The duo then land next to Toothless and Hiccup, who look amazed at them along with the other riders.

"Best one yet by far. Let's see you two do better, Hiccup." Kellen looks at Hiccup, drawing the attention away from him and onto Hiccup. "Looks like we've got our work cut out for us there, bud."

Toothless makes a vertical takeoff, then dives down the sea stack, right to the ocean. Hiccup pulls up at the last second, and shoots forward at breakneck speed, making the water split. The two boys skillfully swerve in and out through the maze of sea stacks before coming across two conjoined rocks. As soon as they get close enough, Hiccup unhooks his metal leg, and jumps onto the bridge between the two rocks, while Toothless glides under. Hiccup runs across the rocky bridge, then jumps onto Toothless on the other side. The boy and the Dragon rocket towards the sky, leaving the other Riders amazed and awestruck. Toothless then shoots out multiple plasma blasts, which explode like fireworks. It's obvious who won the competition.

"They're still the best."

"Ya, but me and Surge do come in at a close second. Then you and Yang for third. Fishlegs for fourth. Snotlout and the twins for fifth. And Weiss is dead last." Astrid then shoots Kellen a look, not one of anger but of annoyance. "Come on, you know that's true."

"Another win. Good job, bud." Hiccup looks down at the other riders before flying back to the village.

"Yep, dragons. Most people on Berk would say life here is better since we made peace with them. Unfortunately, dragons are still, well, dragons." When the duo land in the village, they see chaos. This includes a Yak being chased by a Gronckle, a couple of Terrible Terrors stealing chicken from a woman, a Deadly Nadder who refuses to leave a man's roof, a Monstrous Nightmare stealing a sack of Apples from another man, and another Deadly Nadder chasing a group of chickens, running under a clothesline, and stealing a woman's underwear in the process.

"Bad dragon! Let go of my food! Drop it, pesky dragon! Dragons!"

"Get off my roof, you pest!"

"Let go of that! These are my apples!"

"Give me back my dainties, dragon!"

"Incoming!"

"Look out!"

"Dragon poo!"

Suddenly, the villagers start scattering and running for cover. Hiccup looks around in confusion before looking up, seeing Hundreds of dragons are now flying over the village, relieving themselves, creating a "poop shower". "Ew, gross, gross, gross, gross! Oh, poop! Oh, that's disgusting!" Hiccup backs up, avoiding the poop until he walks in-between two men, Mulch and Bucket, who are using their shields as makeshift umbrellas. "Hey, Mulch. Hey, Bucket. Sorry about the, uh–" Hiccup tried to apologize but the two didn't look mad. In fact, Bucket even interrupted him to explain about the "poop shower".

"Every day at three. They're regular at least. A tip of the cap."

"Better than the days when it was "kill or be killed". Hey, we've got some fish for that father of yours. Bucket, give the boy the cod."

Bucket holds up an empty sack with a torn out bottom. Thinking that he ate it, Bucket said something only he would say. "I ate it already? Did I enjoy it?"

"Um, no, uh, actually, Bucket, I-I'm afraid the, uh–" Turns out, a Terrible Terror stole it and was now dragging away the cod.

"Most of us here on Berk are willing to take the good with the bad. But there are those who will never accept the dragons and will do anything to drive them away."

It's now nighttime. On the outskirts of the village, there's a small house. Inside, is the sleeping figure of a grumpy old man, Mildew. Suddenly, the roof of his house shakes, axes are swinging everywhere, one even lands right above a sheep's head, just missing it. Hearing all of this causes him to wake up. He then walks outside, grumbling under his breath, to find a Gronckle sleeping and snoring on his roof. "Dragons. I should've known." He holds up a half-eaten Cabbage from his field. "Helps himself to my roof and my cabbage."

He turns around and stares in horror, as a bunch of Gronckles have devoured all the cabbages in his field. "My whole field! Gone! That tears it, Fungus." Mildew grabs his helmet, staff, and sheep(Fungus), then walks towards the village with a scowl on his face.

The next day, Stoick gives orders to the other Vikings at the storehouse with the help of Raven and Gobber. "Stand the elk up in the back. The fishing boats just came in with a big catch."

"Stoick!" Mildew yells out, angrily walking over to Stoick.

"Ah, here's Mildew with the complaint of the day." Gobber added, for they are all used to this by now.

"You know I could always." Raven then gestures to killing him by moving her finger over her neck. You see, over the past couple of weeks, she and Kellen have been bonding since she started to find her way of showing affection to him. And a result of this is that she now makes more gestures since Kellen recommends it's a good way for her to show her emotions more. And in this case, she shows off her emotion to strangle and kill Mildew.

Stoick frowns at his sister's gesture, moving his attention now on Mildew. "You picked a bad time, Mildew. I'm in the middle of storing food. The freeze is coming."

"It's the dragons again. Those demons are not fit to live among civilized men." Mildew approached Stoick, not realizing Kellen and Hiccup, with their dragons, were standing a little bit away from them. Turns out, both sons decided to help out their parents today for the freeze, aka, winter was coming.

"Neither are you, Mildew. Why do you think we built your house so far outside of town?" Gobber pointed out, making Raven grow a smirk.

"Ah, very well, make your jokes. Meanwhile these dragons upend our village carts! Turn people's houses into piles of rubble!" Mildew points out to a flip over cart, then to a house with a broken roof, and vikings started to crowd around them. "They even disturb an old man's rest! Can't you see these bags under me eyes?"

"He's right, he's hideous." Gobber again pointed out, making Raven stifle a laugh.

"These are wild and unpredictable beasts! They even cracked this man's skull! Like an egg." Mildew points his staff over to Bucket, hitting his helmet/bucket. But Bucket being Bucket, focused on the wrong thing. "Eggs? I like eggs! Scrambled! Over easy! Poached!"

"You need to put those dragons in cages!" Now getting in Stoick faces, trying to get his point across. "If you don't, they'll eat us out of house and home and destroy the entire village!" The now angry crowd agreed with Mildew, yelling out their frustration.

This was starting to get on Stoick nerves, but luckily, Kellen and Hiccup intervened. "They don't mean any harm. They're just dragons being dragons."

"Plus this is better than having to fight the dragons to the death. We also don't have to rebuild entire houses from the ground up. And we don't have to worry about losing our stuff as much because they aren't being burnt to a crisp anymore." Kellen and Hiccup tried to explain, calmly, but the crowd didn't look that reassured. So Stoick decided to take it from there. "Look, Mildew, if there's a problem I'll deal with it."

"Oh, there is a problem, Stoick. And I think I speak for everyone when I say you better do something about it." Mildew made his way through the crowd, but nothing they said helped make the crowd calm.

Later, in Raven's house, Stoick is discussing the dragon problem with Gobber and Raven, over dinner. They all had finished a meal, with Stoick now pacing around the room, thinking. Raven was sitting at the table with her married partners(Summer and Tai), Gobber was sitting at a chair not too far away from them, and Qrow was passed out drunk on the table. Yang and Ruby were outside feeding Ember, since Ember was too big to fit inside the house. Kellen and Hiccup were laying down against their dragons next to the fireplace.

"We can't just let dragons run wild like they own the place. Hey, we could put up signs!" Stoick suggested.

"Signs? For dragons?" Gobber asked, holding a duck he carved out of wood.

"No! For the people."

"Signs? For Vikings? We're not big readers, Stoick." Tai pointed out, making Stoick grumbled in defeat.

Summer then came up with an idea, standing up in excitement. "Then we'll build a huge net and stretch it around the plaza. Like we did with the dragon arena."

"That will take too long to make and won't work. They can breathe fire and burn it away if it was rope and it will take years for Gobber to make it if it was chains. Even with Kellen and Hiccup's help." Raven pointed out, making summer sit down and grumble in defeat.

"H...How about w…we fight the dragons for it. A…and (burps) we kill any that lose." Qrow drunkenly stated, not sober enough to see all the glares at him.

"Qrow, how come you are always drunk when I need you and sober when I don't!" Stoick yelled at his drunk brother, who was laughing at nothing. "Argg, I hate to say it but maybe Mildew was right. We have to figure something–"

"No, no, wait, Dad. What if I deal with the dragons?" Hiccup stood up and interrupted the adults, putting all their attention on him.

"You?" They all shouted.

"Who else? If anyone can control them, I can. I'm the best man for the job." Hiccup petting Toothless, showing off how he was the right person for the job.

"You're not a man yet, Hiccup." Stoick challenges Hiccup, not wanting all the pressure on him.

"Not if you don't give me the chance to be! Plus Kellen will help me." Hiccup gestures to Kellen, who was starring at the flames. "Right Kellen?"

"Huh, sorry what?" Kellen snapped out of his daze, looking up to Hiccup.

"I said you'll help me, right?" Hiccup asked, seeing Kellen trying to recall what they were talking about.

"Oh, ya. Of course I will help. You can count on me, Uncle Chief." Kellen stood up and playfully saluted Stoick, sticking out his tongue.

Stoick grumbles at the nickname his nephew called him, focusing back on Hiccup. "Fair enough, you'll have your chance... starting tomorrow."

The next day, Hiccup is walking through the village, ready to begin dragon-wrangling. "Okay, gang, there's gonna be some changes around here. But first, where is Kellen?" Hiccup looks around for him, but before he could really start looking for him, he spots a woman fending off a Deadly Nadder that's trying to take the basket of bread she's holding. "Or not."

"Get out! Shoo! For the last time, get your nose out of my bread!" The woman continued to move the basket of bread away from the Nadder as it tried to bite down on it multiple times, before running into a house. The dragon goes to follow but Hiccup decides to intervene. "Hold on, I'll help you! Just... no!" He places his hand on the Nadder's nose, calming down the dragon instantly. "Alright."

Suddenly, multiple chickens come panicking out behind Hiccup, making the Nadder chase after some. He turns around to see a Gronckle chasing a group of chickens, knocking over carts in the process. "Okay…"

He then sees another Deadly Nadder and a Monstrous Nightmare fighting near a sheep farm, setting some of the sheep on fire and causing them to scatter. Hiccup begins to panic as he rushes to the burning sheep. "Toothless, stop that fight! I'll put out the sheep! Okay, okay... whoa!" Toothless nods and goes to stop the dragons fighting.

Meanwhile, Hiccup runs into the plaza, right into the middle of even more chaos than yesterday. A dragon flies in front of him, then a cart runs past him, then a viking chasing after a dragon runs past. All around him, vikings are chasing after dragons that stole something and dragons are chasing after vikings that have food on them.

All the while, the other riders, and Kellen, are watching the whole thing on an abandoned catapult. "What's he doing?"

"Uh, I think he's helping the dragons break stuff." Tuffnut answered Snotlout, to which Ruffnut added on. "Cool!"

They all watch as Hiccup tries to put out a flaming sheep, but the sheep just hops right over him, knocking him over. "Aren't you supposed to be helping him right now?" Yang looks over to Kellen, who is writing some stuff down in his Dragon Journal (the notebook he wrote stuff in about Toothless and Surge in chapters 2 and 3, just want to be clear).

"I am helping him. By making you all help us tomorrow." Kellen simply stated, as he looked up to see Hiccup chasing some sheep.

"He could really use our help right now though?" Astrid pointed out. But the twins had the same answer Kellen did. "We'll get to it.-" "-In a minute."

Hiccup finally managed to corner one of the flaming sheep and put out the fire on the sheep. "Sorry about that." Hiccup takes a big sigh of relief, thinking he had a small break.

Unfortunately for him, hundreds of dragons begin flying over the village. You know what that means… "And... It's three o'clock." Astrid stated, some looking disgusted while others… the twins… just laugh.

Hiccup doesn't have time to run for cover as dragon poop comes falling down towards him. "Oh, no…" Landing right on his face.

"Ok, how are you going to make us do…that?" Weiss asked, trying not to throw up in disgust.

Kellen walks in front of them, closing his journal and looking at all of them. "Because if you don't. Let's just say you get a healthy dose of lightning for your next meal." He puts on a friendly smile and snaps his fingers, making Surge appear behind them all, letting electricity spark across his entire body as the dragon gives them a threatening gaze. "So are you going to help? Or are you going to be shocked?"

"We'll help." Everyone shouted at once, not wanting to get on the other end of a Skrill's lightning.

It's now nighttime, and Kellen is eating dinner with his family. Though some of them were looking at Kellen funny. "So…" Raven looks over to Kellen. "I heard about what happened with Hiccup today. And how you weren't there helping him. Care to explain why?"

Kellen and Yang looked at each other, both knowing what he was doing while Hiccup failed miserably. "I did help Hiccup. But not in the way you think." Kellen told them, taking a bite from his chicken.

"Oh really? Do explain." Raven leaned in closer to him, not believing him.

"While Hiccup tried, and failed, to handle the dragon problem the way he did. I decided that instead of two vikings trying to tame the dragons, we need nine. So I convinced the other riders to help us tomorrow, by asking them nicely." Kellen explained. But Raven didn't fully trust his answer and looked over to Yang.

"He threatened us to help or else he would make Surge shoot us with lightning." Yang bluntly told their parents, all looking at Kellen in disbelief.

"Hey, I only did that in order to make the twins and Snotlout help. I knew that the rest of you would help if I asked. Plus, I wanted to show off the benefits of having a Skrill as a dragon. One of which is that they make very good points when trying to convince others." Kellen stated in his defence.

"Eh. Not mad at him for that. I would have done the same thing if I was in his shoes." Summer shrugged as she continued to eat her dinner, the rest following her lead.

The next morning, Hiccup and the other Dragon Riders are gathered with their dragons in the old arena. "That's your plan? Train dragons?" "Here? Where we used to kill them?" The twins pointed out, looking unimpressed.

"Right... because we don't do that anymore. That's why it's available." Hiccup puts down a basket full of food and gestures to the open, empty arena.

"Actually, the dragons do seem a little nervous." Astrid makes a move to calm her dragon, for all of them were on edge. All except for Surge and Toothless, who were completely calm since they had never been subjected to the vikings dragon killing program.

"That's because they're very sensitive. Meatlug especially. She lost a cousin here. We try not to talk about it." Fishlegs then hugs Meatlug, rubbing and scratching her head in comfort.

"It's amazing your dad just gave us the arena. I would think he had other plans for it." Weiss pointed out.

Hiccup, Yang, and Kellen just look at each other nervously. "Well, it would be, if he did, yeah, but, he didn't, so that's another thing we should try not to talk about." Hiccup explained, trying and failing to ease them with a fake smile.

"Wait, so we're going behind your father's back?" Astrid asked, not liking what Hiccup was doing after their talk last night.

"There you go, talking about it!" Hiccup adds in a fake laugh, before quickly changing the subject. "Uh... alright. Everybody, here's the thing. The dragons are out of control. We want them to live in our world without destroying it but they can't without our help. They've been blowing things up in the village... We've gotta do something about that."

"Got it! Help dragons blow things up! We can totally do that." Tuffnut starts to get excited, looking over to his sister who was smiling with him.

"No. I believe I said–" Hiccup tried to correct him, but Ruffnut spoke over him, continuing from her brother's idea. "Here's how we're gonna do it: First, we make them really, really angry."

"No problem. We anger everybody."

"Ugg. I thought we talked about this yesterday. You either help us with training the dragons. Or get a face full of lightning." Kellen's interruption made the twins momentarily pause, letting him talk. "Listen, I get it. You are excited to share your ideas. But this is really serious. Mildew wants all of our dragons in cages. And I know that we all don't want that to happen, even you two."

Hearing the gravity of Kellen's tone and words, the twins looked at each other and nod in agreement to stop. "You're right. She's sorry." Tuffnut points his thumb over to Ruffnut, who in return, glares at him.

Kellen just sighs at the twins, looking over to Hiccup and nodding, letting him take over again. "Okay, then. Next problem. The dragons are eating everything in sight. Now, when a dragon grabs something it's not supposed to have, you can get him to drop it by giving him a little scratch just below the chin." As Hiccup explains this, he demonstrates to them by holding up a loaf of bread, which Toothless takes from him. He then gets Toothless to drop the bread by scratching his chin, which the dragon enjoys.

"Ehneneneneuh! Maybe that works for you and Toothless, but Hookfang and me? We do things a little different." Snotlout snatches the bread from Hiccup, tossing the bread into Hookfang's mouth, who catches it, as he starts his own demonstration. "When I want this big boy to do something I just get right in his face and– DROP THAT RIGHT NOW! YOU HEAR ME?" He yelled at Hookfang, pointing to the ground like Hookfang was some sort of pet. Hookfang lowered his head from Snotlout's yelling, before dropping the bread and grabbing Snotlout in his mouth, leaving just his legs visible as he shook him around. "See? He dropped it." Snotlout muffled out as the others just watched him.

"Heh heh. Should we help him?"

"Yeah, in a minute." Astrid replied to Tuffnut, fully enjoying what Snotlout had coming to him.

"You know, maybe we should make Snotlout demonstrate more in the future." Kellen jokingly suggested to Hiccup. He knew that Hiccup knew he was joking. That really, he wanted to let Snotlout get hurt from his own actions in front of them as they watched in joy. Mainly because, in his case, Snotlout kept hitting on his sisters.

"Alright. We've got a lot of training to do, but together, we can keep these dragons under control." Hiccup stated as he handed out bread for them to practice with their dragons.

"Uh... can somebody do that chin-scratchy thing? Hello? You guys still there?" Snotlout mufflely asked, for he was still stuck in Hookfang's mouth.

Later, the teens walk through a surprisingly dragon-less part of town. It was strangely quiet, being able to hear the birds chirp from nearby. For once, there weren't any dragons making noise. Nor were there vikings around. It felt empty. Stopping at an open area, each teen had variations of emotions. Most being confusion, concern, and joy. "Huh. No dragons." Fishlegs just rubs his head in confusion.

"That was easy." Ruffnut looked a bit disappointed but also happy. She was happy since they didn't have to do anything, but she was disappointed since she wanted to throw Tuffnut at the dragons.

"Meh, good enough for me. Anyone want to go for lunch?" Snotlout immediately gave up and rubbed his stomach in hunger.

"How can you be thinking about food at a time like this?" Yang punches Snotlout's shoulder, making him get back on task.

"That's weird. If the dragons aren't here, where are they?" Hiccup was then answered by a distant explosion. They all heard this, along with scattered screams of panic. Turning to see where it was coming from, a mushroom cloud appears near the food storage house.

"Something tells me that way." Astrid starts to run in the direction of the explosion, the rest of them following in suit.

Arriving at the scene, the riders just saw where what was once the food storage house is now a pile of smoking splinters. They also see their dragons eating all the fish from storage. "Stormfly?"

"Hookfang?"

"Ember?"

Hiccup and Kellen run in, trying to see if anything was salvageable. Instead they were met with an angry Stoick, throwing burning wood away. "They've eaten everything! We've got nothing left for the freeze!"

"I warned you, Stoick. But did you listen to me? No. You put a bunch of teenagers in charge! Now look at what the dragons have done! Caging is too good for those beasts." Mildew, seemingly coming out of nowhere, gets into Stoick's face, ranting and blaming the teens.

"Dad, I swear I can fix this. We– we were just starting to–" Hiccup tried to explain, but Stoick quickly cut him off. "Enough, Hiccup! How can I trust you and Kellen to control all the dragons, when the two of you couldn't even control your own?" Stoick gestures out to Surge and Toothless, one having their head stuck in a basket while the other is eating a fish. "Oh, Toothless…" Hiccup looks at them with defeat, Kellen, however, just facepalms at them, muttering something about needing to spread meals out more often.

Stoick then walks back into the ruined building, picking up some baskets. "Bucket! Mulch! Man the boats! We need another catch!" He then tosses the baskets to the two viking fishers.

"It's too late, Stoick. It took us six months to catch all that fish." Mulch drops the baskets as he tries to explain to Stoick.

"Don't tell me it's too late! We've got to try!"

"Of course we do!" Mulch laughs it off, pulling Bucket down to his height with his hook, trying to put the blame on him. "Uh, don't tell the Chief it's too late. You're always so negative!"

"I don't know what it is with me."

Hiccup walks after his father, trying to get another chance. "Dad, please! You gotta listen to me. I know dragons better than–"

But Stoick cuts him off again. "Not now, Hiccup. I have a village to feed. The dragons have done enough damage. By tonight, I want every one of them caged. Understand?"

"Bah! You can't just cage these dragons! You need to send them away now!" Mildew added, making things not only worse, but making an angry crowd agree. "Stoick, Mildew's right!" "Get 'em out of here!"

"You're right, Mildew. We'll cage them tonight, and in the morning, Hiccup will send them off the island. I'm sorry, son." Stoick turns around to get back to work, leaving a content crowd and a sad Hiccup.

Now dinner time and the teens decided to eat together, to support each other. Though, all of them were picking at their food or not eating at all. "I can't believe we have to send them away!" Snotlout complained as he threw his fork on the ground.

"It's gonna be weird. I got used to seeing Stormfly's face being the first thing I see every morning." Astrid stirred her soup, making a little Nadder shape with the cream.

"I'll say. I enjoyed riding Surge right before dinner. During the sunset. It was our little way of escaping everything." Kellen sighed as he drew a sketch of him and Surge flying into the sunset. Yang, meanwhile, silently cried on his shoulder in depression, just like she did when she was sad as a kid.

"Every night before I went to sleep, Meatlug would lick my feet. Who's gonna do that now?!" Fishlegs slammed himself onto the table, making the twins look at him weirdly.

Ruffnut, in a desperate attempt, tries to lighten the mood. "I volunteer Tuffnut!"

But Tuffnut was too sad to care and just looked down at his food. "Whatever. What time should I be there?"

Astrid stands up, deciding to get things over with. "Come on, guys. Let's get this over with."

"This is the worst day of my life! We're never gonna see our dragons again!" Fishlegs cried out.

"No, it's the worst day of my life! I never got a chance to get a dragon and now we have to say goodbye to them." Weiss joined Fishlegs as the two started to cry. Then everyone else, except Hiccup and Kellen, got up from their seats and started to head to the arena.

"We can't let that happen! Toothless is the best friend I've ever had." Hiccup squats down, petting Toothless. Kellen joins him as he also pets Surge.

"Wow. So he is a better best friend than me. Your best friend since we were babies." Kellen jokingly stated in a last ditch effort to raise the mood, but he knew what Hiccup meant.

But that didn't matter as Mildew came by, putting their moods even lower with his mocking regret. "Oh, Toothless, I'm gonna miss you so much... You know what your mistake was? Thinking dragons could be trained. But a dragon's gonna do what a dragon's gonna do. It's their nature. And nature always wins." As Mildew walked away, both Toothless and Surge growled at him, ready to attack the old viking in anger.

But before either dragon could attack, the Great Hall doors open, letting in a cold chill that makes the fireplace go out. Toothless decides to help by relighting the fire with a plasma blast. "Oh! Thank you, Toothless."

Witnessing this, Hiccup gets an idea. "You know what? Mildew is absolutely right! Come on, bud!" Hiccup runs out, Kellen, Toothless, and Surge following him.

"I'm sorry, but did you just say Mildew was right?!" Kellen asked Hiccup, but got no answer from the running one legged teen. "Guess I'll get my answer later then."

Meanwhile, the rest of the teens flew into the arena, saying goodbye to their dragons before caging them up. Each rider got off their dragon, holding torches as they now said their goodbyes. "Goodbye, Hookfang."

"I'm sorry, Stormfly. Now go" Astrid points her torch to the arena gates, to which Stormfly and the other dragons sadly walk through one after another.

The riders stand at the top of the arena gates, all holding their torches as they watch their dragons for the last time. "Ugh. Feels like big, sharp teeth are tearing at this thing in my chest." Snotlout clenches his hand over his chest, right over his heart.

"That's what it feels like when your heart is breaking." Astrid explained to Snotlout, actually showing him some compassion.

But Snotlout just denies this as he looks at Astrid. "I don't have a heart! I'm not a girl!"

Slowly, the chains started to move as the gate lowered. Both the dragons and the riders are saddened as they watch the closing gate. Suddenly, Hiccup's voice is heard. "Don't close it!"

Both him and Kellen come down from the night sky, landing in front of the teens, near the gate. Hiccup rushes off Toothless as he grabs the lever to open the gates back up. "We are not locking them up."

The teens look at him with confusion but also happiness. "What happened? Did you change your father's mind? Or are we going behind his back again...?" Astrid asked, not wanting to get into more trouble.

"Yeah? Are we going behind his back again? No offense Hiccup, but I don't want to get on uncle Stoick's bad side. None of us do."

"Uh... one of those. Look. The dragons are gonna do what they're gonna do. It's their nature. We just need to learn how to use it!" Hiccup then starts to explain his plan to them, making all of them regain hope.

The next day, out at sea, just off the coast of Berk, Mulch and Bucket are trying to catch more fish, on Stoick's orders. But as they raised the net, there was nothing in them. "Ah, the nets are empty again."

"Did I eat them already? Did I enjoy it? Oop- am I being too negative?" Bucket wondered, since he didn't know how to read a room, or in this case, read the boat.

Luckily for them, Snotlout and Hiccup flew over them, ready to put Hiccup's plan in action. "Snotlout, scare us up some dinner!" And with that, Snotlout and Hookfang dived into the water. Though Bucket thought that something else was happening. "Dragon attack!" But instead of attacking as Bucket thought, Hookfang swam around, scaring the fish and herding them into the fishing nets.

"Hey! Thanks, dragon!" Mulch shouts out to Snotlout, as he and Bucket raise a net full of fish. And with Snotlout being Snotlout, he couldn't help but stroke his ego. "THAT'S RIGHT! THAT JUST HAPPENED!"

Meanwhile, Hiccup, Astrid and Fishlegs fly toward Mildew's field, where the old man is trying to plant more cabbage. "Afternoon, Mildew!" Astrid cheerfully shouts to the old man, flying past him as Astrid uses Stormfly's tail to dig into the soil, while Hiccup flies down behind her to pour cabbage seeds into the ground-up dirt. Though the dust cloud they made did make Mildew cough. "Three o'clock! Time for the fertilizer!"

"Fertili-?" Mildew looks behind him, seeing hundreds of dragons begin flying over his field, with Fishlegs and Meatlug joining them.

"Okay, Meatlug, let 'er rip!" Meatlug and the rest of the dragons begin to rain down poop onto the field, providing a good fertilizer to help grow Mildew's cabbage. "Smile, Mildew! We just saved you three months of work!"

Meanwhile, Yang and Kellen were dropping supplies for the store house. Yang and Ember were carrying wood for Ember was easily able to knock the trees down. While Kellen and Surge were carrying berries and deer, since Kellen was an expert when it comes to hunting and foraging, and Surge was a pretty good tracker.

In the forest, the Twins are using Barf and Belch's explosions to scare a sounder of wild boars, not caring about all the trees falling in their wake. Once they run out of the forest, Hiccup and Toothless shoot out a plasma blast, herding them all into the village's slaughterhouse. Gobber sees this and quickly closes the door behind the boars.

All of the riders meet up at the slaughterhouse, landing after successfully carrying out Hiccup's plan. "Whoo-hoo! That was awesome!" Fishlegs shouted in excitement, letting the adrenaline run through him.

"How did you know that was gonna work?"

"Because they're dragons, and they're gonna do what dragons do. We just have to work with them and not against them. You know who we should actually be thanking-?" But before Hiccup could finish, Mildew interrupted him, Stoick with him. "There they are, Stoick! Those dragons don't look like they're in cages to me."

"No. This is not what I asked for." Stoick looks at all of them, not in anger but also not joy.

Later, the teens are now all gathered in the arena, standing in front of their caged dragons, when Stoick, Gobber and Raven approach them. Vikings from the village surround the arena, waiting to see what happens. "Oh, no! What's Stoick gonna do to us?" Fishlegs voice started to get higher, showing how scared he was.

"I'm too pretty for jail!" Ruffnut just whined. Tuffnut looked at his sister, not believing her. "Ha, where'd you hear that?"

"You think he is going to banish us?" Weiss asked Yang, since she was his niece. But Kellen answered for his sister instead. "That is a possibility since we disobeyed a huge order from the chief. Or we could be banished instead. Both are possibilities." Kellen's answer just made Weiss more nervous and scared.

"You all disobeyed my orders... and there will be consequences." Stoick looked mad. Gobber did as well. But Raven, she looked more neutral, like she was trying to cover something.

Astrid whispers over to Hiccup, mad at what was going to happen "I told you we were gonna get in trouble. Ugh, you never listen to me!"

Hearing this, Hiccup walked forward to take the blame off of the rest of them. "Dad, if anyone's going to get in trouble, it should be me."

But Stoick quickly shoots him down. "Nope. You all had a hand in this."

Up above, Mildew looked down at the teens with joy, ready to see these dragon lovers to get what comes to them. "Oh this is going to be great, Fungus. It's about to get ugly."

Stoick starts his rant, walking back and forth in front of them. "You took over this place without asking. You released the dragons against my wishes. Things are going to change around here. That's why I–"

"You're getting a Dragon Training Academy!" Gobber quickly interrupts Stoick, not able to hold back his excitement.

"Gobber! I wanted to tell them!" Stoick yells at him in frustration, not mad at the teens anymore. Everyone looks confused and shocked, especially Mildew and the teens. The teens, though, quickly replaced their shock and confusion with relief and happiness.

"I'm sorry. You're right. Go ahead." Gobber holds out his hand, letting Stoick talk.

"Well, you told most of it!"

"Doesn't matter much though. Just get to the part where you tell them how proud of them you are." Raven bluntly stated, trying to get Stoick back on task.

"Raven!" Stoick now turned and yelled at his sister.

"What? You were taking too slow." Raven shrugged, smirking a little bit.

Stoick grumbles and sighs, turning to Hiccup. "Hiccup- well, what she said. You've all made me proud. This Dragon Training Academy is for you. All of you." He opens the cages inside the new Academy, releasing all the teen's dragons. They all rush to meet their dragons, melting into their embrace. "Hookfang! My buddy!"

"Hey, Stormfly! I missed you so much!"

"Meatlug! Oh, who's Daddy's little baby? Oh, who's Daddy's little…"

"Surge! There's my energetic buddy!"

"Hey, bud!"

Meanwhile, Mildew was very upset of the fact that not only Stoick was keeping the dragons, but was also giving these pesky teen's an Dragon Academy to learn and train them. "Oh, I'll get those dragons yet." After saying that, he took his leave, seeing nothing worth staying for.

Stoick approached Hiccup, smiling. "Now all you have to do is train 'em."

"Not a problem, Dad. After all, I've got him." Hiccup pet's Toothless as relief and joy consumes him.

"Ah-hem? Coughing noise!" Kellen wraps his arm around Hiccup's upper body, making sure he didn't forget about how he was there in the beginning. "And Kellen."

Now it was Astrid's turn. "Ah-hem?" Hiccup turns around to see the rest of the teen's with their dragons standing there, looking at him. "And... them, too."

As the day starts to end, Kellen is flying high above the forest on Surge, flying into the setting sun. Hiccup is in his room, drawing his friends with their dragons. Fishlegs is sound asleep in his bed, his feet sticking out of the blanket where Meatlug is licking them. Now morning comes, and Astrid gets out of her bed. She runs to open her window, revealing Stormfly, ready to start the day.

"Dragons can't change who they are. But who would want them to? Dragons are powerful, amazing creatures." Back at the arena, or now, the Academy, Hookfang and Meatlug are hanging the new sign on the new Academy: Berk Dragon Training Academy. Where its symbol is a Night Fury forming a circle with its whole body, and a red tail fin meeting its head. "Berk Dragon Academy. I like the sound of that." Kellen stood with Hiccup and Astrid, watching them put on the final piece of the Academy.

"And as long as it takes me, I am going to learn everything there is to know about them. Wouldn't you?"

Author note:

Hello Science emperor here. I hope you enjoyed the story so far. This chapter, I tried to involve all the riders as much I thought I could without going off script too much. I wanted this chapter to be similar to the show since this is a very important start for the riders. I am open to criticism, since I want to improve on my writing. Plus, I do not have a beta reader yet. So if you are a beta reader reading this, I hope you reach out to me.

I do want to make one thing clear, I have been getting lots of offers to make this into a comic. While I would find that to be cool, I am not interested in doing that. I say this because I have had people in the past who have worked with me and not give me credit for anything. So that just left a bad taste in my mouth. Another reason is that I do this as a hobby. I have all these "what if's" in my head and this is my way of sharing them without being judged personally by people in my everyday life. So while I thank you for being interested in making this into art or a comic, my answer is NO.

Also, one more thing, I will begin doing a little teaser of future chapters at the bottom of the Author note from now on. So without further ado, I give you my first teaser of a future chapter.

Teaser: far into the future~

The riders and dragons are gathered around a campfire. Ruffnut and Tuffnut emerge from the darkness with dishes of unsavory-looking fish. "Dinner is served…" Tuffnut hands out sea bass, but it was covered in green looking jell and salt.

"What is that smell?" Fishlegs holds his nose, swinging his hand to make the smell go away. Everyone retches with him because of the pungent aroma in the air. Even the dragons. "What is this?"

Tuffnut proudly answered Astrid, holding out the dish for all to see. "Oh, glad you asked, milady. That would be salt-encrusted sea bass with a salted seaweed gravy. Mixed in with salt and all finished with a little pinch of salt on top."

"That's way too much salt, and that's coming from me." Blake covers her nose, being overwhelmed by the smell because of her cat faunus traits. Kellen hands her some pine tree leaves to counteract the smell, which she gladly takes, holding them up to her nose.

""Too much, you think?" Everyone looked at Ruffnut wondering if she really asked that.

"Yes! Way too much. I told you guys that I should have made dinner, but no. "Let the twins cook for once." "They can't mess it up that much." "Take a break. You're on vacation." And now you all have salt for dinner. Salt with a side of fish. Luckily I packed myself some food back at the Edge." Kellen mockingly made copies of their voices, pulling out two sandwiches from his bag, giving one to Blake to share.
