The day started like any other chaotic school day at East Highland High. Cassie Howard was in her AP Chemistry class, trying to focus on the experiment in front of her. She carefully measured a beaker of sulfuric acid, but her mind kept drifting back to her ongoing feud with Maddy Perez. The tension between them had escalated to an all-time high, and it felt like the entire school was waiting for the next explosion.

Cassie sighed, staring out the window. Why does everything have to be so dramatic with her? she thought.

Before she could dwell too long, the piercing shriek of the fire alarm echoed through the halls. The entire class froze, then erupted into chaos as students grabbed their bags and filed out into the hallway. Cassie followed, her heart sinking as she realized this would mean an unscheduled encounter with the one person she was actively avoiding.

Outside in the parking lot, the student body gathered in disorganized clusters. Teachers barked instructions, but the students were far more interested in gossiping and scrolling through their phones. Cassie spotted Lexi leaning against a tree, scrolling through TikTok.

"Hey," Cassie called, making her way over. She was about to launch into a rant about the fire alarm when she froze. Maddy Perez was already there, standing beside Lexi and talking animatedly.

"And you know what else she did?" Maddy said, her voice dripping with mockery. "She actually thought dating another Nate wouldn't cause a problem. Like, who does that? It's like she's addicted to sabotaging herself."

Lexi raised an eyebrow but stayed silent, clearly trying to stay out of the drama. Cassie, however, was not about to let this slide.

"Excuse me?" Cassie said, storming up to them. "Are you seriously talking about me right now?"

Maddy turned, her expression one of exaggerated surprise. "Oh, hi, Cassie! Didn't see you there."

"Yeah, right," Cassie snapped. "I heard what you said."

Maddy smirked. "Good. Saves me the trouble of repeating it."

Cassie's fists clenched at her sides. "You're so obsessed with me, Maddy. You can't go five minutes without trying to ruin my life."

"Obsessed?" Maddy laughed, flipping her ponytail. "Sweetheart, no one's obsessed with you. You just keep making it so easy to talk about you."

Cassie's face burned with anger. She turned to Lexi. "Why are you even listening to her?"

Lexi raised her hands defensively. "I'm literally just standing here."

Maddy crossed her arms. "Don't drag Lexi into this. She's not the one who keeps stealing other people's boyfriends."

Cassie glared at her. "You know what? I'm done letting you control the narrative. You think you're so perfect, Maddy, but I know things about you. And I'm not afraid to share them."

Maddy's smirk faltered slightly, though she quickly recovered. "Oh, please. What could you possibly have on me?"

Cassie hesitated for a split second, then blurted, "Like how you told everyone you dumped Marco, but really, he dumped you because you were too controlling."

The crowd of students nearby fell silent, their ears practically perking up at the promise of fresh drama. Maddy's expression darkened.

"Is that supposed to hurt my feelings?" Maddy said, her tone icy. "Everyone already knows Marco was trash. If anything, I did myself a favor."

Cassie's confidence wavered. "Well, what about how you—how you fake-cried to get out of gym class last week?"

Maddy raised an eyebrow. "That's not a secret. Everyone knows I don't run laps for anyone."

Cassie's face turned red. She was running out of ammunition. "Fine, but what about—what about—"

"Let me guess," Maddy interrupted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're going to accuse me of being too pretty? Too confident? Too good at absolutely everything?"

Cassie was seething now, her frustration boiling over. "You think you're untouchable, Maddy, but you're not. People only like you because they're scared of you!"

Maddy took a step closer, her eyes narrowing. "And you? People don't even like you. They just feel sorry for you."

The words hit Cassie like a slap, and for a moment, she was too stunned to respond. The crowd of students had grown larger, their whispers filling the air like static. Lexi looked between the two girls, her expression a mix of discomfort and exasperation.

"Alright," Lexi said, stepping between them. "Can we all just take a breath? This is a fire drill, not Real Housewives of East Highland."

Cassie glared at her sister. "You're supposed to be on my side."

"I'm on the side of not causing a scene," Lexi said, crossing her arms. "Which, by the way, you're both failing at."

Maddy smirked, clearly enjoying Cassie's frustration. "Good luck exposing me, Cassie. But next time, maybe come with actual receipts."

Cassie opened her mouth to respond, but the blaring sound of a whistle interrupted her. Principal Hiram Lodge stood at the edge of the crowd, his expression a mix of irritation and exhaustion.

"Alright, everyone, back inside," he barked. "Fire drill's over. Let's move it!"

The students groaned but began dispersing. Cassie and Maddy exchanged one last venomous glare before heading in opposite directions.

As Cassie trudged back into the building, Lexi fell into step beside her.

"So," Lexi said casually. "How do you think that went?"

"Shut up, Lexi," Cassie muttered.

Lexi smirked. "Just saying. Maybe next time, come prepared."

Cassie didn't respond. She was already plotting her next move. The battle might have been lost, but the war was far from over.
