Sunday morning in East Highland was unusually crisp, and the buzz around town was palpable. The Target in the center of town was hosting a Being Frenshe event, featuring none other than Ashley Tisdale herself. Cassie Howard and Lexi piled into Suze's car after much convincing. Cassie, as usual, was dressed to the nines, her hair perfectly curled and her lip gloss shimmering like it was its own brand deal.
"Do you really think Ashley Tisdale is going to care about you?" Lexi asked dryly as Cassie adjusted her makeup in the passenger seat mirror.
Cassie shot her sister a glare. "Why wouldn't she? I'm cute, I'm fashionable, and I've been a fan since High School Musical. We practically have a connection."
Lexi snorted. "Yeah, a connection through cable TV."
Cassie ignored her, checking her reflection one last time. "This is going to be amazing. I can feel it."
The Target was already bustling with activity when they arrived. Bright signs for Being Frenshe lined the aisles, and a small stage had been set up near the beauty section. A queue of fans stretched out the door, all eager to catch a glimpse of Ashley Tisdale.
Cassie dragged Lexi to the back of the line, vibrating with excitement. "I can't believe we're going to meet her!"
Lexi, clutching her iced coffee, sighed. "You're acting like she's Beyoncé."
"She is Beyoncé," Cassie shot back. "For millennials."
When they finally got to the front of the line, Cassie's confidence was at its peak. Ashley Tisdale stood behind a small counter, effortlessly chic in a casual blazer, her hair pulled into a sleek bun. She greeted fans with polite smiles and handed out bottles of her new palo santo sage body wash.
Cassie stepped forward, her grin wide and bright. "Hi, Ashley! Oh my God, I've been such a huge fan since High School Musical! I even watched all of Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure."
Ashley barely glanced at her, her smile still intact but obviously rehearsed. "That's sweet," she said flatly, picking up a bottle of body wash.
Cassie extended her hands, expecting Ashley to hand her the bottle. But instead, Ashley turned and handed it to Lexi. "Here you go," Ashley said, her voice perking up slightly. "You've got great energy."
Lexi blinked, caught completely off guard. "Uh, thanks?"
Cassie's smile faltered. "Wait—what about me?"
Ashley gave her a cursory glance, her smile thinning. "I think we're good here."
Cassie's jaw dropped. "Good? But I was—"
Ashley leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "Honey, I can feel the chaos from a mile away. This isn't about you."
Cassie's face turned red as Lexi tried to stifle a laugh. "Chaos? I'm not chaotic! I'm a fan! I've loved you for years!"
Ashley raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "I'm dedicating this moment to positivity, and honestly, your vibe? Not it."
Lexi coughed into her drink, barely suppressing her laughter, as Cassie's eyes widened.
"You've got to be kidding me," Cassie said, her voice trembling with indignation.
Ashley shrugged, picking up another bottle to hand to the next fan in line. "I don't kid about vibes."
Cassie's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "You're kicking me out of your Target event because of my 'vibe'? That's ridiculous!"
"It's self-care," Ashley said, still calm as ever. "Maybe try it sometime."
The crowd around them murmured, people pulling out their phones to record the interaction.
Cassie, now fully spiraling, shouted, "You're just a washed-up bitch who's trying to sell overpriced soap!"
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Lexi's eyes went wide as she grabbed Cassie's arm. "Oh my God, Cassie. Stop."
Ashley, however, didn't even flinch. She tilted her head slightly, her smile never wavering. "And yet, I'm still here, thriving, while you're yelling at me in a Target."
The crowd burst into laughter as security stepped in. A tall man in a red Target polo gently placed a hand on Cassie's shoulder. "Ma'am, we're going to have to ask you to leave."
Cassie pointed at Ashley as she was guided away. "This isn't over, Tisdale! You'll regret this!"
Lexi followed her out, shaking her head in disbelief. "Wow. That was… something."
Cassie spun around, her eyes blazing. "Can you believe her? She humiliated me! And you just stood there!"
Lexi sipped her coffee, completely unfazed. "What was I supposed to do? Agree with her? Because honestly… she had a point."
Cassie groaned, throwing her hands up. "You're impossible."
"No," Lexi said, smirking. "You're impossible. And now you're banned from Target."
Cassie's shoulders slumped as they walked to the car. "This is the worst day of my life."
Lexi patted her on the back, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. "Cheer up, Cass. At least you made it into someone's TikTok compilation of public freakouts."
Cassie groaned louder, her face buried in her hands. Lexi, ever the unbothered sister, slid into the car with a chuckle, already pulling up her phone to check the trending hashtags.
And sure enough, by the time they got home, #TargetTisdaleDrama was trending. For once, Cassie wasn't thrilled about the attention.
