The cafeteria at East Highland High School was always loud, a symphony of clinking trays, chatter, and the occasional burst of laughter. But on this particular day, it felt like the noise level had been cranked up even higher. Cassie Howard walked through the double doors, her hair perfectly curled and her lip gloss shimmering. She clutched her tray like a trophy, scanning the room for a place to sit.
Her gaze landed on Robert McCallister, a senior she'd noticed a few times in the halls. Tall, confident, with a jawline that could cut glass—he had that effortless charm that made him magnetic. Today, he sat at a table near the windows, laughing with his friends. Cassie's heart skipped a beat.
Lexi, who had reluctantly agreed to sit with Cassie today, noticed her staring and groaned. "Please don't do this."
"Do what?" Cassie asked innocently.
"Whatever you're planning," Lexi said, picking at her salad. "He's probably dating someone, or worse, Maddy."
Cassie waved her off. "Maddy doesn't own every guy in this school."
Lexi sighed. "She might as well."
Ignoring her sister's warning, Cassie straightened her shoulders and walked toward Robert's table.
Robert looked up as Cassie approached, flashing her a grin that made her stomach flip. "Hey," he said, his tone casual.
"Hey," Cassie replied, trying to sound equally casual but probably failing. "Mind if I sit here?"
His friends exchanged amused glances but didn't object. "Go for it," Robert said, scooting over to make room.
Cassie set her tray down and slid into the seat next to him, her heart racing. They chatted for a few minutes—about classes, the upcoming pep rally, and his spot on the basketball team. Cassie couldn't stop smiling.
"You're really funny," Robert said, leaning in slightly.
Cassie felt a spark of boldness surge through her. She glanced at his lips, then back up at his eyes. "You think so?"
"Yeah," he said, his voice softer now.
And then, without thinking, Cassie leaned in and kissed him.
The cafeteria went silent, or at least it felt that way to Cassie. The kiss was brief but electric, and when she pulled back, Robert looked momentarily stunned before grinning.
But the moment was shattered by a voice that could cut through steel.
"What the hell is this?"
Cassie turned to see Maddy Perez standing a few feet away, her arms crossed and her expression murderous. She looked like she'd just stepped out of a fashion magazine—effortlessly chic, but radiating fury.
"Oh no," Cassie whispered.
Maddy stalked toward the table, her heels clicking against the linoleum like gunshots. "Robert, care to explain why my boyfriend is kissing her?"
Robert paled. "Uh, Maddy, I—"
"Save it," Maddy snapped, her eyes now fixed on Cassie. "And you."
Cassie swallowed hard. "Maddy, I didn't know—"
"Of course, you didn't," Maddy said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Because you never know, do you? You just stumble through life, ruining everything in your path like some kind of chaotic tornado."
"Maddy, I'm sorry!" Cassie tried to explain, but Maddy held up a hand to silence her.
"Sorry doesn't cut it, Cassie," Maddy said, her voice low and dangerous. "You want to play games with me? Fine. Let's play."
By the time lunch ended, the smear campaign was already in full swing. Maddy had posted a story on Instagram with a close-up shot of Cassie at the cafeteria table, captioned: "When your ex-friend can't stop kissing your boyfriends. #pathetic #slore"
The post went viral within minutes. By the time Cassie got to her next class, whispers and giggles followed her like a shadow.
In AP Chemistry, Mrs. Grant-Nash noticed the commotion immediately. "Settle down," she barked, glaring at the students.
But even her authority couldn't stop the low hum of gossip. Cassie sank into her seat, trying to disappear.
"Hey, Cassie," a boy behind her whispered. "What's it like being East Highland's most wanted?"
"Shut up," Cassie hissed, her face burning.
Mrs. Grant-Nash shot her a look. "Miss Howard, something you'd like to share with the class?"
Cassie shook her head quickly. "No, ma'am."
The class snickered, and Cassie buried her face in her hands.
By the time the final bell rang, Maddy's smear campaign had reached new heights. Someone had created a TikTok montage of Cassie's most embarrassing moments, set to the song "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia.
Lexi found Cassie sitting in the hallway after school, her head in her hands.
"Well," Lexi said, sitting next to her. "That went about as well as I expected."
Cassie groaned. "Maddy's going to destroy me."
"She already has," Lexi said with a shrug.
Cassie glared at her. "You're supposed to be supportive!"
"I am," Lexi said. "But maybe next time, don't kiss Maddy's boyfriend. Just a thought."
Cassie sighed, leaning back against the wall. "Why does this keep happening to me?"
"Because you don't think things through," Lexi said matter-of-factly. "And because Maddy is better at this game than you are."
Cassie closed her eyes, feeling the weight of the day pressing down on her. She knew Lexi was right. But deep down, she also knew she wasn't ready to give up.
Because if there was one thing Cassie Howard excelled at, it was making bad decisions—and this feud with Maddy was far from over.
