Lunch at East Highland High was a spectacle on any given day, but today, it was chaos incarnate. The cafeteria buzzed with activity, students crowding around tables and gossiping loudly. Teachers and faculty members tried to maintain order, but even they couldn't escape the wildfire of chatter that had consumed the school.
The topic? Cassie Howard's car.
The infamous intercom announcement from earlier that morning had made Cassie's car the talk of the town. Rumors swirled like smoke, each one more outrageous than the last.
"I heard they're selling it to fund a new gym," a junior said, leaning over her tray of nachos.
"No way," another replied. "I heard Maddy's donating the money to fix the water fountains."
"Someone told me Cassie tried to stop the auction but got tackled by security," a freshman piped up.
"Are you serious?" the junior gasped. "This school is insane."
At the faculty table, even the teachers were talking.
"Is this for real?" Mrs. Grant-Nash asked, her brow furrowed. "Who auctions off a student's car?"
"Apparently, it's a prank," Mr. Bennett said, shaking his head. "But I wouldn't be surprised if Maddy actually pulls it off."
Cassie Howard sat at her usual table, hunched over her salad and trying to tune out the endless whispers and not-so-subtle glances in her direction. Her cheeks burned with humiliation as she pushed a cherry tomato around her plate.
Lexi, ever the voice of reason (and sarcasm), sat across from her, calmly unwrapping a granola bar. "You know, if you hadn't vandalized her car first, this wouldn't have happened."
Cassie shot her a glare. "Thanks for the reminder, Lexi. Super helpful."
Lexi shrugged. "I'm just saying. Maybe next time, think before you act."
Cassie groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I can't believe this is my life."
"Believe it," Lexi said, taking a bite of her granola bar. "And by the way, everyone's waiting to see what Maddy does next."
Cassie peeked out from behind her hands. "What do you mean?"
Lexi gestured subtly toward the cafeteria, where students were gathered in small groups, their phones out and their voices hushed but animated.
"They think Maddy has some big plan to humiliate you even more," Lexi explained. "It's like watching a car crash. No pun intended."
Cassie sat up, her jaw tightening. "She's not going to win. Not this time."
"Oh no," Lexi said, leaning back in her chair. "What are you planning?"
Cassie's lips curved into a determined smile. "Something better. Something that'll hit her where it hurts."
By the time the last bell rang, Cassie had already set her plan into motion. She spent the afternoon chatting up Enrico Torres, a senior with a chiseled jawline and a devil-may-care attitude. He was charming, funny, and, most importantly, dating Maddy Perez.
Cassie had heard the rumors—Maddy and Enrico had been quietly seeing each other for a few weeks, but their relationship wasn't public knowledge yet. That made him the perfect pawn.
"Hey, Enrico," Cassie said, leaning against his locker with a sweet smile. "You busy tonight?"
Enrico looked up from his phone, surprised. "Uh, not really. Why?"
"Because I was thinking we could grab coffee or something," Cassie said, twirling a strand of her hair. "You know, get to know each other better."
Enrico raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "You're asking me out?"
"Why not?" Cassie said with a shrug, her smile never faltering. "Unless you're not interested."
Enrico grinned. "Oh, I'm interested."
By the time the next day rolled around, the news of Cassie and Enrico's date had spread like wildfire. The cafeteria was once again buzzing with gossip, and this time, the spotlight was on Maddy Perez.
Maddy stormed into the cafeteria, her heels clicking sharply against the tile floor. Her usual calm and collected demeanor was nowhere to be seen as she marched up to Cassie's table, where Cassie sat looking smug.
"You've got some nerve," Maddy hissed, slamming her hands down on the table.
Cassie looked up, feigning innocence. "Oh, hi, Maddy. What's up?"
"Don't play dumb," Maddy snapped. "You know exactly what's up."
Lexi, sitting nearby, muttered, "Here we go again."
Cassie leaned back in her chair, her smile widening. "If you're talking about Enrico, I don't see the problem. He's not married, is he?"
Maddy's eyes narrowed. "He's my boyfriend."
"Oh, really?" Cassie said, tilting her head. "Because he didn't mention that when we went out last night."
Maddy clenched her fists, her jaw tightening. "You're doing this on purpose."
"Doing what?" Cassie asked, her tone dripping with faux sweetness. "Living my life? Sorry if that bothers you."
The cafeteria had gone silent, all eyes on the showdown unfolding in the center of the room.
"You're pathetic," Maddy said, her voice low and venomous. "You think dating my boyfriend is going to make you look better? Newsflash, Cassie—it just makes you look desperate."
Cassie's smile faltered for a split second before she recovered. "Desperate? Please. I didn't have to try that hard. He came to me."
The crowd let out a collective "Ooooh," and Lexi groaned, sinking lower in her seat. "This is so stupid."
Maddy straightened up, her expression shifting from anger to calm, calculated menace. "You think this is over? It's not. You want a war, Cassie? You've got one."
Cassie stood, matching Maddy's intensity. "Bring it."
With that, Maddy turned on her heel and walked away, her head held high. The cafeteria buzzed with excitement, students already speculating about what would happen next.
Lexi looked at Cassie, exasperated. "You really couldn't just leave it alone, could you?"
Cassie shrugged, picking up her tray. "She started it."
Lexi sighed. "And you just made it worse."
Cassie smiled, her confidence restored. "Maybe. But at least I'm winning."
Lexi shook her head as Cassie walked away, knowing full well that this feud was far from over. And if history was any indication, things were about to get a whole lot messier.
