Chapter 2
Lucan strode through the halls of the tower, noting the empty classrooms and rather haphazard living spaces of his fellow students. Even his twin's room wasn't well kept and it was clear everyone had been a little hurried this morning. Picking up his pace, he could hear the echoing clash of Keyblades, the encouraging voices of spectators carrying throughout the training room.
While rather unassuming, the training room always felt larger than life to Lucan. The sand-covered floor and open space allowed for movement, and while the attacks were dampened and the magic wasn't at full strength, this was still taken seriously. And the injuries were definitely real. Lucan had suffered his fair share of broken bones and burns during his training duels. Currently, he is just glad to be outside of the arena, watching Nyx and a fellow student spar.
Nyx's hair was frazzled and her breath was ragged. Her Keyblade, a black blade with golden wings as a cross guard and a half circle guard was pointed toward the ground. Her opponent had their back to her, crouching in order to catch their breath. There was a loud clap that brought the combat to an end and lowered the barriers surrounding the arena. Nyx allowed her Keyblade to fade and dropped to her knees, gashes along her arms and burns were splotched along her legs.
"Nyx!" Lucan ran to his sister's side, pulling a potion from his coat and quickly pouring it down her throat. Lucan watched as her arms began to heal, leaving white lines on her arms and small amounts of red on her legs.
jConfirming that Nyx was breathing and placing her outside the arena, Lucan turned towards her opponent with a fire in his eyes.
"What the hell was that, Frigg?! It was a training duel not a gladiator battle!" Lucan shouted, bringing his own Keyblade to bear. The twin prongs of the blade connected by amethyst runes and a gold quillian sat between the hilt.
Frigg chuckled as she turned to face Lucan. Her short platinum hair tied back, and she removed the long black coat she had worn while sparring with Nyx.
"Please! If your sister can't handle a simple spar with me then she shouldn't even be fit to call herself a Keyblade wielder! She's frankly lucky that her injuries weren't worse!" Frigg cackled as Lucan growled. Without thinking, Lucan snapped his fingers, and the barrier reappeared around the arena.
"Heh so the bookworm wants to fight? This shouldn't take long at all. Last I heard you were having nightmares, does the bookworm need a nap?" Frigg mocked, sending a blast of lightning towards Lucan.
Lucan closed his eyes, feeling the crackle of the spell as he snapped his wrist. His Keyblade separated into segments, joined by the runes only. Bringing the whip around, he let the tip of the blade catch the spell and divert it. The blade came back to rest as the lightning collided with the barrier. Lucan opened his eyes to a shocked Frigg, who didn't hesitate to summon her weapon and move to a corner of the arena in a flash.
She launched herself towards Lucan, fire coating her Keyblade as Lucan reacted with the whip, swinging it toward Frigg's arm. As the segments linked round her arms, Lucan pulled her down hard. There was a slam as Frigg impacted with the floor of the arena, sand flung upward from the collision.
"You-you can't just do that! How dare you attempt to humiliate me like this!" Frigg yelled, the sand settling as Lucan snapped his fingers once more, the barrier dissolving along with his Keyblade.
"The next time you go after my sister, I won't hesitate to do even worse to you Frigg. Maybe this'll teach you a bit of humility," Lucan turned and began to leave the arena when he saw a familiar figure standing at the entrance of the room.
"Master Odin! How…how long have you been there?" Lucan stammered, panic setting in as he feared the repercussions of his rather harsh rebuke of his colleague.
"Long enough to know that you showed rather impressive tactics in that duel. Not to mention that you came to your sister's defense without thinking. Yes, I rather think you are ready…" The Master stroked his salt and pepper beard, gazing thoughtfully at his student.
"Master? Ready for what?" Nyx asked, shaking her head gently as her legs shakily supported her weight. Lucan offered his twin an arm and helped her hobble closer to hear the response.
"Lucan, Nyx. Please follow me, the rest of you continue on training," Odin turned and walked towards an ascending staircase. Lucan looked at his twin and slowly the pair followed the Master to learn of their fate.
