Chapter 12: The Devil's Facade
Under the alias Kael Shirogane, the once-revered Mephistopheles lived a mundane life in the human world, concealing his true identity as a devil. For two years, he had successfully blended into society as a teacher at Kuoh Academy, his days uneventful yet peaceful—a stark contrast to the chaos of the Underworld.
Despite the routine, Kael's sharp senses were always alert, and recently, he noticed something unusual. Akeno Himejima, one of the most popular and enigmatic students in the academy, had started paying closer attention to him.
Kael had always kept a low profile, ensuring his aura was masked and his movements unremarkable. Yet, Akeno's piercing gaze seemed to cut through his careful facade. It was as though she could sense there was more to him than met the eye.
The Subtle Interactions
Akeno wasn't the type to confront someone outright—she was patient and observant. At first, it was small things: lingering glances during his lectures, subtle questions about his past when she and her friends visited him in the staff room, and an uncanny ability to appear wherever he happened to be on campus.
Kael noticed, of course. He always noticed. But he said nothing, waiting to see how far she'd go.
One afternoon, as the cherry blossoms scattered across the academy grounds, Akeno approached him in the courtyard. She wore her usual warm smile, but there was a glint of curiosity in her eyes.
"Kael-sensei," she began, her tone light yet probing. "You've been at Kuoh for two years now, haven't you? You must have some interesting stories about your life before teaching."
Kael raised an eyebrow, his expression calm but guarded. "Not much to tell, I'm afraid. Just an ordinary life, like anyone else."
Akeno's smile widened, a playful edge creeping into her voice. "Ordinary, huh? I find that hard to believe. You don't quite... fit the mold."
Kael chuckled softly, deflecting with practiced ease. "I suppose everyone has their quirks. But you're one to talk, Himejima-san. You seem to know more than you let on."
The two exchanged a silent moment of understanding, and Akeno's smile softened. "Maybe I do," she said, her tone teasing yet sincere. "But some mysteries are better unraveled slowly, don't you think?"
Kael nodded, a faint smirk playing at his lips. "Indeed. Let's hope they're worth the effort."
The Revelation
Later that evening, Kael sat in his modest home, the lights dimmed as he contemplated the day's events. His encounter with Akeno had left him unsettled, though he wouldn't admit it. She was perceptive—far more than he'd anticipated.
As he rested on the couch, his thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock at the door. Kael frowned, his senses immediately on high alert. Few people ever visited him, especially unannounced.
He opened the door to find Akeno standing there, her usual cheerful demeanor replaced with a seriousness he hadn't seen before.
"Himejima-san?" he said, his voice calm but questioning.
"Kael-sensei," she began, her tone measured. "I think it's time we had an honest conversation."
Kael's crimson eyes flickered briefly before he stepped aside, allowing her in.
As she entered, Akeno turned to face him, her expression resolute. "I know you're not who you say you are. Your presence... it's different. You're not human, are you?"
Kael sighed, running a hand through his silver hair. He had hoped to avoid this, but Akeno had backed him into a corner. There was no use in lying now.
"You're right," he admitted, his voice low. "I'm not human. I'm a devil."
Akeno's eyes widened slightly, but she didn't step back. Instead, she tilted her head, her curiosity evident. "A devil? I thought as much. But why are you here, living like this? You don't seem like the others."
Kael leaned against the wall, his gaze distant. "Because I've had enough of that life. The scheming, the bloodshed... I left it all behind. I chose to live quietly, away from the Underworld."
Akeno studied him for a moment before speaking again. "And your strength? How strong are you?"
Kael chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Stronger than most, but not enough to matter. If it helps, you can consider me... middle devil level. Nothing extraordinary."
Akeno raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Middle devil level? Somehow, I don't believe that. But I'll let it slide—for now."
The two stood in silence for a moment before Akeno smiled again, her usual playfulness returning. "Well, Kael-sensei, I suppose I'll have to keep an eye on you. Just to make sure you're not up to anything suspicious."
Kael smirked, shaking his head. "As you wish, Himejima-san. But I assure you, I'm not as interesting as you think."
Akeno laughed softly, heading for the door. "We'll see about that. Goodnight, Kael-sensei."
As she left, Kael leaned back against the wall, exhaling deeply. His quiet life was becoming increasingly complicated, but for now, he could only hope that his secret would remain safe.
