The walls of Silco's office muffled the dubstep music playing on the club floor below them. Sevika pulled the cap off the bottle she'd stolen with her teeth, spitting it onto the floor with a reverberated thud. "She fired on us," Sevika growled.
"There are always mishaps in battle. The Firelights were her target, and most are dead." The chair hid Silco, Zaun's everpresent green lighting casting over him as he flipped through a clipboard.
Sevika took a swig of the alcohol, her frustration mounting. "It wasn't a mishap. She froze up and lost her shit. I could've handled those brats if it weren't for…" Sevika quickly cut herself off, her jaw clenching.
Silco turned around in his chair, now facing Sevika and lowering the clipboard, his interest piqued. "Go on," he said.
She sighed before continuing, "Some… idiot got in the way. A guy dressed in a yellow suit flew into the Firelights, making a giant mess of things."
Silco tilted his head, his lips twitching in a faint, disbelieving smirk, "You're saying you saw a superhero?"
Sevika stood up and took another swig of her drink, trying to drown out her anger. "Even if that asshole hadn't shown up, she's a problem, and we all know it."
"We?" Silco's eyes narrowed. Sevika averted her gaze, which told Silco all he needed to know. "I expect better from you than excuses," he continued. "It was your job to make sure things went smoothly. You failed. Don't disappoint me again." Silco flicked the clipboard back up and again began scanning it, "I want you to investigate this 'superhero' you speak of. Perhaps that is something you could handle without error."
Sevika quickly turned around, her poncho flowing with the momentum, and she exited his office with a huff. Once the door thudded shut, Silco tossed the clipboard lazily onto his desk and picked up the injector. "The world's growing smaller every day, thanks to the Hexgates. And now, we're cut off," He turned in his chair and inserted the needle into the shimmer-based medicine, "The topsiders are leaving us further and further behind," Silco looked up slightly, not turning his head, "What happened?"
Jinx, lying atop the rafters of the office with her braids hanging, took a second to respond, "She already told you."
"I'm asking you," Silco calmly retorted, his voice soft as he flicked the needle. Jinx thudded onto the desk behind him, papers flying off and around Silco, though he didn't appear to notice.
"One of those Firelight wackos was a girl," Jinx began, her voice muffled as she shrunk, drawing her knees to her chest, "With pink hair."
Silco made a sound of acknowledgment before rotating towards Jinx, looking up at her with expecting eyes and holding the syringe out to her. She took it hesitantly and scooted off the desk, moving her head next to Silco's. "Your sister's gone. You know that as well as I do."
"I know," Jinx responded, looking down. Sisters, right?" She said with a forced laugh. Quickly, she zipped about an inch to the right. "You can't live with 'em; you can't stuff 'em back in the ol' babymaker," she chuckled nervously. She zipped back, blowing on the top of the injector, resulting in a deep whistling sound.
Silco looked at her for a second before averting his eyes back to the ceiling, "Today's screw-up will set us back weeks," He stated, strict but soft.
Jinx's legs were draped over his as she leaned her head against the top of his desk's large chair, "I'm sorry," she muttered.
"Not only that but the appearance of this… superhero." Silco again flicked his eyes towards her, "What do you know?"
Jinx scoffed, "I don't know. Some circus rejects in a yellow suit just came flying out of nowhere."
"Flying?"
"Yeah, flying," Jinx casually murmured, moving the syringe through the air like an aircraft.
Silco had to force his eyes not to widen to the size of dinner plates, "With some kind of device, correct?"
"Nope," Jinx affirmed, "Just… floated in the air."
Silco waited a moment before snatching her wrist. "I'm doing this for us, Jinx. All of us." He said, looking her in the eyes, though Jinx was not doing the same. "The sons and daughters of Zaun deserve more than their runoff."
Jinx gently ripped her hand out of Silco's grasp, "It won't happen again," She cautiously assured him, positioning the needle above his eye.
"I know." After another second of Jinx positioning the syringe, the needle shot into Silco's left eye, causing him to sharply tense up, shimmer running down his face like tears. After he stopped contracting, Silco leaned forward onto his knees, meanwhile, Jinx curled herself into a ball.
"Sevika will clean up today's mess," he soon stated.
"Sevika?!" Jinx asked incredulously, "That ogre couldn't clean a dust bunny with a blowtorch!"
Silco brushed his hair back, "She'll suffice. I'm sure she's capable enough to investigate some vigilante. Perhaps you should focus on your gadgetry?" He propositioned.
Jinx flopped backward onto his desk in response, the papers and devices scattered on its surface jolting slightly as she sighed.
"Take some time."
Jinx stared at the ceiling, "I-I-I don't need time…" She pleaded, looking at Silco.
Silco looked away, not wishing for Jinx to see how frustrated he was becoming, "Take it anyhow." Jinx, her eyes brimming with tears, bolted off his desk and ran out of his office. Silco brushed the underside of the eye Jinx had just injected shimmer into before staring out his window at Zaun's neon green atmosphere.
"Superheroes," he muttered, the word dripping with disdain. "How quaint."
