Song: Theme of the Week #17 - Captain America's Theme (from Winter Soldier)
"...So, let me get this straight."
Homare Kagayaki spoke with a serious expression, with arms crossed, and her gaze was directed towards George Kurai, who was sitting on the other end, at the center of the table. All of the Cures and their respective teams have been accounted for. Those who couldn't physically attend are listening in from the Mirai Pads, with their faces shown via holographic screen imagery.
"You're the younger native version of George Kurai from our timeline who is a completely different person from the George Kurai that we fought back then, and we already know that he came from an alternate timeline considering what Harry and Hagumi-chan told us about it. As for you, you're... an actual king."
"High King, actually," George explained.
"High King... How does that work exactly?" Homare asked.
"The kind of system that my government works on is based on what you'd call the Narnian Monarchy. I'd probably assume at least that you've all watched the Chronicles of Narnia movies."
"Oh! I love that movie actually!" Honoka exclaims with a fond smile. "I used to watch those when I was a kid." Other Cures more or less muttered similar experiences.
"If I recall," Riko Izayoi, sitting near George, spoke with a curious tone. "Aren't those movies based on the books that an English writer wrote. C.S. Lewis, correct?"
"Yes, he did write those books," George nodded. "And as for the books themselves, whether he knew it or not really doesn't matter, but nevertheless, they are actually based on actual historical events."
"Wait, really?" Riko looked surprised. Though she wasn't surprised at the concept of fictional books being based on actual events. "So, the characters there, the Pevensies, Aslan, all of it?"
"Yes," George nodded. "In fact, the Pevensies are actually declared as Saints of the Church, and I don't mean the Catholic Church of our world, but rather the Narnian Orthodox Church established a couple of millennial cycles ago, which was around the First Age of the Argo Navis Multiverse, and it's one of, if not the largest, religions present within the twilight realms that I've been governing."
"Right, and..." Homare looked towards Melinoe, who had been quiet the entire time and was rather... shall we say, formal and dignified. Though seeing as she's High Queen, Homare shouldn't really be surprised at this kind of attitude, and she's already seen her fair share of royalties in her line of work as a Pretty Cure. "Well, you're wife, for one thing. Second wife I mean."
George can already tell at this point that everyone of the Cures was interested in the story, for varying reasons. He eyed at Hana Nono, who looked, a bit troubled, though she hid that under an attentive expression. Similar cases can be said for some like Nodoka Hanadera and Mashiro Nijigaoka. He couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Having two wives isn't exactly normal, especially in a modern day country like Japan.
"Okay, that is something I don't really see every day," Mai Mishou (*1), one of those present in the hologram screen, would speak with an intrigued expression. "Does Camelotgard for instance allow for polygamous marriages?"
"Actually, it does, Mishou-san, in some specified and exceptional circumstances," It was Melinoe who answered for her husband, sporting a formal smile and putting her hand to her chest. "As some of you have already guessed by now, I am essentially the Goddess of Ghosts and Queen of the Underworld of Greek mythology. Similar with George's government, my father, the Lord Haides Plouton, also had taken the same form of governance for the management of its affairs in the Underworld. Naturally, from my culture's perspective, a man having more than one wife is quite common amongst our kind.
My husband's other wife, Lucia von Lac, who is also a Pretty Cure, Cure Lancelot, who comes from a more monogamous background. Both of us have discussed about this topic from all angles, before we eventually reached the conclusion that we could share, provided of course that we respect certain boundaries between the two of us, and that we would honestly try to communicate our thoughts on specifics of how to handle our relationship with our husband with his consent, which I'm more than happy to comply with, as they are also similar sentiments that I share when it comes to making a marriage commitment like this to work."
"So you really are an actual goddess," Saaya Yakushiji would speak with a certain level of reverence and awe.
"And a PreCure, Saaya-san," Melinoe gently reminded. "Hence, you all do not need to be very formal around me in this circumstance, especially when I'm not the only royal Pretty Cure present amongst this gathering, and I'm also pretty sure that I'm not the first deity that you've all met since you know plenty in your world who would qualify."
"Yeah, but..." Ageha Hijiri would speak with an amazed and interested smile, one arm crossed while the other was free, sitting nearby. "It's not every day you get to actually meet the daughter of The Hades."
"Not to mention, I'm kinda not surprised that you have more than one wife, seeing as the George we know was... umm..." Homare was a little hesitant to say it outright.
"I get it, Homare-san, don't worry," George reassured with an empathetic sigh.
Both of them knew that the George Kurai of the alternate timeline had a few not so subtle relationships here and there, and they weren't really the good kind either. Papple (*1) and Gelos (*2) among others spring to mind.
Admittedly, when Homare was looking at George, she felt that he wasn't really half bad, in both first impressions, looks, and personality so far. Not to say she doesn't have her reservations, if only because... she glanced at the HUGtto! PreCure team's leader, who was trying her absolute best to be mature about the situation. And she is, surprisingly enough. Though that doesn't mean she isn't also conflicted about this in some way. She's still human in the end, like the rest of the Cures.
"I'm actually a lot more curious on how you can actually transform into a literal Kamen Rider," Laura couldn't help but point out, her elbow placed on the table, supporting her hand which her face was leaning on. "And it's not a Kamen Rider I'm familiar with.
"Black Zi-O," Yuri Tsukikage spoke. "That's what Mashiro-san said, right?"
"Eh? Hmm, that's... right," Mashiro looked a little wary and trying to put on a brave face. In truth, many thoughts were going through her mind. All of it relate to George and how he's married to two women. She still didn't know how to feel about that one.
"After kind of thinking about it," Ayumi Sakagami, sitting nearby, would speak up. "It kind of feels like a combination of two Kamen Rider names. Black and Zi-O."
"What would that mean in this context exactly?" Homare asked. "Never mind the fact that he could transform into a Kamen Rider, seeing as some of our senpais here like Miyuki-senpai (*4) and her team have frequently dealt with fictional stuff before as one example."
"There was also that time with the fairies coming out of storybooks incident that happened just last year ago," Mirai Asahina, who was nearby, pointed out.
"Yeah, there's that too," Homare nodded in agreement. "I think that was the latest incident where we dealt with Fusion (*5) again."
"Ugh, seriously, that guy doesn't seem to stay down for too long even after all of these years," Laura sighed heavily, before realizing to her contrite self's expression, directed at Ayumi, who definitely had some interesting history with Fusion (*6). "No offense of course to you, senpai."
"None taken, Laura-san," The latter shakes one of her hands, as if she would say 'Think nothing of it'.
"And there's also the fact that Yuri-senpai's fairy partner who is supposed to be dead is currently working with you as your fairy advisor," Homare pointed out the presence of Cologne, who was floating towards George.
"Well," Both George and Cologne glanced at each other, with a slight hesitant expression. "Not quite. It's only recently that he and I are working together, for about... one year I suppose..."
Yeah, right... Takumi Shinada couldn't help but groan a little as he was making use of that ice pack that Steve Rogers would give him from the fridge. It was definitely a lot more than just that. George isn't technically wrong either that Cologne started working for George as a fairy advisor, counsellor, and informant for about one year... One year after Zero Flashpoint that is. Cologne... wasn't in fact the only dead person to be brought back either. There's someone else. Takumi glanced at Yuri, as his thoughts turned into a frown.
"So, umm... I've got a question!" Manatsu Natsuumi (*7) would raise her hand excitedly. "How come I can remember you, George?"
"Eh?" Some of the Cures muttered in surprise, while George and a few paid attention.
"Actually..." Asuka Takizawa (*8) looked at George with confusion. "...I'm also recalling George in my mind for some reason. I somehow met him when I was... five? Ugh... I don't really know how to explain any of this." The other Cures present more or less would say similar things.
"So for whatever reason," Sango Suzumura (*9) sported a concern look. "We're all starting to remember George."
"But... why?" Minori Ichinose (*10) would ask, with a worrying tone.
"You're all not really suppose to remember," Kaoruko Hanasaki responded, sitting on the other side of the table. "Based on the perspectives that all of you are recalling, most of those encounters would be a George Kurai from our own future, hence there is that delicate risk to not disrupt the flow of our timeline, as Pretty Cure."
"The Sacred PreCure Chronology, you mean," Yuri spoke with a concerned look. "What exactly does that entail other than certain events needing to flow as they should?"
"It's not as complicated and morally grey as it sounds, Yuri-san," George addressed, with everyone listening. "It only actually means one thing. All of you, present in this very corner, and this includes those not present who live in our world, are destined, one way or another, to be Pretty Cure. That's it. Naturally, me being remembered by any of you, is detrimental to that flow, hence your memories and experiences of me would have to be erased."
"By who exactly?" Hana would ask, speaking for the first time in George's presence.
"...There's a natural force that operates within temporal governance, jurisdiction, and duties, they're called the Arbiters," George explained, looking at Hana.
"The Arbiters?" Hana asked.
"To put it in simple terms, Nono-san," Melinoe explained. "They're the time police. They are tasked with regulating and monitoring the timeline of your world, and a couple of others, so they also have jurisdiction in the world I came from. Your world's interdimensional designation is called PCA04 while my world's designation would be M616 Prime."
"So, wait a moment," Saaya would looked intrigued. "Are you telling us that you come from another universe, Melinoe-sama?"
"Yes, that would be an apt way to describe my status from your world's perspective," Melinoe nodded. "And as for the Arbiters, they do have a jurisdiction in keeping the timeline as closely aligned and balance as possible. That would mean ultimately that..."
"We'd lose all memory of George," Riko looked saddened when she said that.
"Yes," George nodded, with an empathetic look. "And even with as I am, with a much higher authority, I'm as much as obligated and bound to respect the Laws of Time as much as the others."
"So why now?" Homare couldn't help but ask. "Why are many of us here recalling those memories right now?"
"I'll try to explain that part, Homare-san," Hikari Kujou would speak up.
She would summarize the dream that she and a few of the Pretty Cures had, and it all centered around a cosmic being named Mistress Love - and to the surprise of most of the Cures, she was Hikari's mother. Melinoe would in turn add her own insights.
"There are two Astral Gods of M616 Prime who have an Origin Affinity for the concept of magical girls. They are Mistress Love and Sire Hate. Mistress Love is the embodiment of love throughout the multiverse, and Sire Hate represents her opposite within that spectrum, which is hate.
Now, one should not equate "hate" with evil as you would all generally understand it, as Sire Hate is not a force of evil, but is simply a god performing a cosmic function and how that function is relegated. Hate could mean many things to many people after all. It could simply mean a dislike of something that we don't want to do or achieve. It does not really mean hating someone all of the time.
Mistress Love represents the positive spectrum energy of the concept of a magical girl, while Sire Hate represents the negative spectrum. And as to how these relate with the Pretty Cure, all of you by far have a much higher common origin centered around and found within Mistress Love herself, and drew all her power from her. Though, it's not in the case of dependency as much as it is an independency. Even without Mistress Love's power, you all have unique abilities that you can call your own."
"Hm. And she was also the one who revealed to us memories about our time with George," Hikari would explain.
"And that's the main issue of this conversation," George said. "For her to say that, it has to be very important, if she wants me to meet up with all of you now. ...Well," His gaze side-glance a little. "I was intending to meet you all eventually, regardless if she didn't appear."
"And why is that?" Homare asked.
George was quiet for a bit, before looking at Homare with a serious expression. "A promise. One that I made long ago."
"Umm..." Mashiro muttered, being worried about George and the look that he's giving. "Would High Queen Guinevere be the one you promised with, George?"
"...Yes," George nodded. "Though, she's not the only one." He looked at Hana, who looked surprised.
"Wait, me?" Hana pointed at me.
"No, Nono-san," Melinoe clarified for her husband. "Not you specifically. Rather... a future you."
"Eh?" Hana looked surprised, and most of the other Cures shared that surprise. "Wait, future me? As in, future future me? Would she be the same future me that-"
"Yes," George affirmed, though quietly. "She's you, from the timeline where Hariham Harry and Hugtan, as well as the Criasu Corporation, all came from."
The Cures would all begin to take in this information slowly. Concern doesn't even begin to describe this.
"...You've... You've met the other me..." Hana muttered. Something told her that something wasn't right. "How..."
George shakes his head. "I... I can't say. I'm sorry. I prefer to not want to talk about it, please." His gaze became a little darker and... haunted, as if he remembered something bleak.
"George..." Hana, and a few of the other Cures, spoke with worry.
...What had happened between him and Hana's future self?
"Ah-Ahem," Takumi would cough his throat, drawing the attention of everyone. "Look, there's... there's just some things we can't really talk about, at least right now. It's not... It's not that we want to lie to any of you..." He looks especially at Yui Nagomi who was sitting right beside him, and never left him since his psycho-episode. "It's just that... it's too painful to talk about some things."
"Takumi..." She placed her hand towards his shoulder. "Is that why... Is that the reason you've been acting a little strange?"
"...Yeah," Takumi nodded. "...On the other hand, those therapy sessions that I've been having with Hanadera-san's personal head doctor from the hospital she was confined in," Nodoka perked up when she heard mention of her past and the doctor in charge who took care of her. "They've been helping me to, at least control myself a little more."
"Beloved," Melinoe would look to George for permission. "Do you think I can be allowed to explain a little of the current state of affairs for the Cures to know about? They do have a right to know, and I'm asking this as a fellow PreCure myself."
"Of course, I would trust you with this, my Queen," George nodded. He didn't hesitate one bit.
Melinoe nodded, before turning towards the Pretty Cure. "Now, all of you. In regards to the current state of affairs that is in relation with your world, there is something that you would all have to know about your histories specifically. For instance, there had been a cosmic event of sorts that had happened relatively last year ago. It was called... Zero Flashpoint."
"Zero... Flashpoint..." Many of the Cures repeated.
"Yes," Melinoe nodded. "What I can tell you at least was that this event was widespread enough that many cosmologies had rearranged themselves so to speak. Your world was just as affected. For instance, have you all ever heard of Mitakihara Ward?"
"Hmm," Saaya nodded. "It's often described as Japan's most clean ward and one of the most advanced in terms of technological developments. Many leading scientific organizations such as CERN actually have a branch established there, and the city's various facilities used to conduct various experiments and field testing."
"Yes, well, that ward, in the original Pre-Zero Flashpoint history of your world, should not actually exist," Melinoe pointed out.
"Eh?" Saaya looked surprised, as well as the other Cures.
"Let me ask you all another question. Do you know a woman named Makise Kurisu (*11)?" Melinoe asked.
"Umm, isn't she that famous scientist whose known for her expertise in artificial intelligence and works at Viktor Chondria University, one of the best educational institutions in America?" Honoka asked.
"Yes, and... she too should not exist in your world as far as the original history is concerned," Melinoe stated.
"Hold on," Yukari Kotozume, standing a few meters away, would immediately realize. "Are you telling us that many of the things we now know about our world shouldn't even be in this world at all?"
"That is correct," Melinoe nodded. "After Zero Flashpoint, elements of various universes mixed together. How this phenomena affects a given universe is a given case by case basis. Your world in this case is completely ignorant of what had occurred last year ago, when your world as well as mine, both synchronized together, making the timeframes of this and mine running together on the same year of 2029. Your history and adventures as PreCure at least have all remained intact, so you all should not worry on that front."
"Still though," Madoka Kaguya would speak up her own concerns. "We're literally talking about our world being different from how it should be. How many differences do you suppose would be major in this case?"
"That would be me for starters," Everyone turned towards the blonde foreigner who was seated beside Takumi, Steve Rogers, who spoke grimly. "You all are at least familiar with the history of Captain America, I take it."
The Pretty Cure are definitely knowledgeable on how Captain America was, as he was one of the main things being discussed in history classes when speaking of the conflict of World War II. No one really knew of Captain America's true identity then, as most of the records of him were lost during the war itself.
"Hmm," Laura nodded. "Even my people are aware of who Captain America is, though nobody really knew the man's identity, but he was in fact a soldier who fought against the Nazi Party, and it's science division, HYDRA."
Takumi twitched in grimace, clenching his knuckles.
"...Well, you're looking at him actually." Steve Rogers revealed.
A silence reigned.
Then...
"EEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
All of the Pretty Cure and their fairies would exclaim in shock.
"Wh-Wait a minute!" Erika Kurumi would exclaim in excitement and almost hyperventilating. "Wait, we're actually standing face to face with the Living Legend himself?! The Sentinel of Liberty who fought against evil! That Captain America! It can't be! I must dreaming right now!"
"Wha- Hold on, you're... You're Captain America," Laura muttered, before shame was filling her now, as she did kind of accused the guy of being untrustworthy. It now made her into a total idiot that wanted to bang her head on a table.
"I am," Steve nodded. "And with regards to your history with Captain America, I'm also that Captain America, oddly enough."
"Wha-What do you mean by that, popo?" Pollun, one of the fairies, asked as his eyes couldn't help but be in awe in the presence of a true hero of history.
"Like what Lady Melinoe said," Steve explained. "Zero Flashpoint's after-effect had essentially been mixing up a couple of elements of various universes. You could say that this variation of your world's history of me is a mixture of my own history (*12) and the history of at least two other timelines. As a consequence," He pointed and tapped to the side of his head. "I can remember by memory all of the experiences that I had done in that history of yours. So, this world in effect, became mine, when I naturally came from another world and history entirely, which is the same world where Lady Melinoe comes from."
"Okay, so..." Yuri looked at Cologne for answers. "Cologne, what was the Pre-Zero Flashpoint era of World War II for us like exactly?"
"Well," Cologne explained. "Obviously, Captain America didn't exist. Our World War II never really had a Captain America, or... HYDRA. There's no Howard Stark either, hence no Tony Stark, or Iron Man as you would all call him."
"Huh. But... But we've met Iron Man (*13)," Itsuki Myoudouin would say with concern. "More than a few times in fact."
"And there lies the problem," George pointed out. "There are so many elements present within our world now which by all rights should not even exist. This world was originally a Pure World, a world where only the Pretty Cure were the only superheroines, but because of Zero Flashpoint, history got fudged a little and some things, while never changing greatly, differ in the most minor details. There are only a literal few natives on this very Earth who would remember the original timeline. On this room, it's myself, Takumi, obaa-chan, and Cologne."
"Make that five," Everyone would turn and see Seiji Sagara (*14), a young man in his first year of high school, wearing a casual red jacket with black and white lines on the shoulder, walking towards them. "How are you doing, Takumi?" He asked the latter with concern and caution.
"Like hell," Takumi muttered while feeling the reassuring hand of Yui. "Guess you got my message."
"Seiji!" Megumi Aino (*15) muttered in surprise, being one of the Cures present on the hologram. "What are you doing over there? I thought that you had something to do today, that's why you weren't with us?"
"Well, I do have something to do today, and that's being here with my friend," Seiji looked Takumi before looking at Yui. "...I'd keep a very close eye on Takumi, Nagomi-san, everyone."
"I second that," George nodded, with his arms crossed.
"Guys, really, come on..." Takumi looked a little irritated.
"Takumi-kun," Kaoruko gently explained. "I think we should tell them, if you know what I mean."
"...I know ...damn it, I know," Takumi gritted his teeth, as all of the Cures and their fairies looked worried. "...I can't really hide any of that forever."
"Hide what?" Yui asked, now looking alarmed. "What do you mean by hiding it forever, Takumi?"
Takumi would grit his teeth. He always dread the day when he would have to tell the woman he loves, the one who asked him that very question, of what it meant for him. Of what HYDRA did to him. Of what they made him do. He looked at all of the faces of the Cures and the fairies, and they weren't the eyes of judgement. Though it felt even worst for him. He didn't think he'd deserve those kind eyes again.
He couldn't look at her. He couldn't look at Yui.
"Takumi... you're crying..." He could feel a gentle hand raised to her face. "...What's wrong?" Yui would ask gently.
He would look at George, Seiji, Cologne, and Kaoruko, who would not try to explain, as this was something only he needed to do.
"...HYDRA," He muttered, grabbing everyone's attention. "They... They did something to me. They... They made me their stupid weapon, for assassination, and I got brainwashed to doing it."
"Eh?" Yui muttered, as her anxieties increased tenfold.
Takumi... was brainwashed?!
It... It horrifically begins to make sense for Yui, on why Takumi was acting a bit different since a year ago and right now. In hindsight.
"Assassination? Brainwashed?" Amane Kasai would ask, concerned for Takumi's well being. "When was this?"
"...Zero Flashpoint," Takumi muttered as he dropped his ice pack to the table. "...Project Winter Cape 1004/Z." He replied, speaking the number that he painfully memorized. "...That was the project that was specifically designed in order to create a Magical Assassinator for the organization HYDRA. I was its prime candidate. The best, at what I do."
A deathly silence began to be felt everywhere in the room. The Cures and their fairies couldn't help but feel anxious thoughts and dread.
"...How long?" Yui couldn't help but ask. She needed to fully know. The fact that it was HYDRA who did this to him made her fear for the young man in front of her. Her heart raced. How long was HYDRA using him?
A long silence. Then Takumi muttered. "...Years."
That answer would drop and shatter the heart of Yui Nagomi.
"...Years?!" She exclaims. "What do you mean, years?"
"Zero Flashpoint..." Steve Rogers explained, making Yui and the others look at grim expression. "It wasn't just some cosmic event that merged worlds together. It was a very, long, nightmare, for some more than others. Zero Flashpoint basically meant one thing. HYDRA won. And the world paid the price for it."
