Dougie happily hums for himself as he walks out of 's classroom with the rest of his classmates. His plan works like a charm; His mother did her magic after talking to every teacher about his situation, including Ms. Charlotte. She got one of her students, an Afghan Hound named Indy, to help him.
Dougie feels a hand over his shoulder and looks behind him to see Indy, wearing her brown vest, white swirly necklace, and her hair picked up in a ponytail. "See you around, Dougie; I hope you get your device fixed."
"Thanks, Indy," Dougie says as Indy finally gets her hand off him. He turns off his hearing aids so as not to have a repetition of yesterday's and walks towards the outside of the building to eat his sandwich in peace during his lunch break.
On the other side of the school, however.
Bingo exits her English class with her classmates after being made an example of "How the lack of confidence can affect a student,"... and that's on top of the scary German Shepherd teacher who used her as an example of "extraordinary will and dedication to come to class earlier than the bell" in her first class, which gained her a few confused faces…And definitely not least. She almost got sent to the principal's office after one girl beside her said a really bad word, gaining the attention of the angry teacher in computer class…She hopes the English Cocker Spaniel that almost framed her goes to sleep with her pillows warm.
In general, morale is an unknown word for Bingo, and as far as she knows, Bluey doesn't have the same lunchtime as her today.
Lila is still sick for two more days.
And she has no idea where her other friends from Glasshouse are
So…Looks like she will spend time by herself and her lunch…Unless she figures out a way to escape school…Unless
Bingo walks faster, dodging dogs left and right swiftly toward the school's exterior, hoping to prove herself right.
Dougie finally reaches the exact spot where he and Bingo met each other. The tree with bricks around it to sit down. He still needs to tell her about what happened yesterday, and he doesn't expect to see her again until tomorrow, but when he sits down and looks up.
While the students walk from left to right and right to left, a gap appears, revealing Bingo's downcast demeanor as she approaches him.
Bingo's eyes look up, spotting Dougie sitting down and looking at her.
Her eyes slowly open up, her lips slowly form a smile, and her tail starts to wag slowly.
"Dougie…" Bingo whispered as she walked faster toward him
A smile also appears on Dougie's face as his tail also wags. He reads Bingo's lips and figures she is happy to see him. Considering how fast Bingo is walking, he stands up…to allow Bingo to hug him.
Bingo embraces Dougie's fluffy fur with her arms and clashes her face into his shoulder to find comfort after a troublesome day. After a few seconds, she finally lifts her head to look at Dougie's eyes. "It's good to see you again, Dougie,"
But since Dougie has his hearing aids off, he can't hear her, and turning on the cochlear implant in the middle of the lousy courtyard would mean another instance of the high-pitched noise. Fortunately for both of them, Dougie has an idea.
Dougie separates from Bingo and pulls out his cell phone to repeatedly point at it with his index finger.
"Huh?" Bingo leaned her head slightly
After seeing Bingo's reaction, Dougie has another idea. He turns his cell phone around and uses the cellphone notes app to type something down to show Bingo.
"I can't use the Cochlear Implant; it's half broken. Can I have your phone number so I can text you instead?"
"Oh," Bingo blushes as she shrinks. This is the first time in her life that someone besides her close friends from Glasshouse has asked for her number. But considering he is the only friend she has at that moment and also that she wants to spend time with him, Bingo grabs Dougie's cellphone and pulls out her cellphone to copy her phone number to Dougie. When she is done, Bingo returns him the cell phone.
With the cell phone in his hands, Dougie looks for Bingo's brand new contact and texts her.
Dougie: Hi Bingo!
Bingo's cell phone sounds off; she opens the text message with a smile and texts back.
Bingo: HI Dougie! Im so glad to see you today
Now, with an unconventional method of communication between themselves, Dougie and Bingo sit to continue "talking."
Dougie: Me too. There is something I need to tell you.
Bingo: Yes?
Dougie: After recess yesterday, in my music class, my cochlear device got broken somehow, and I had to go to the doctor
Bingo: Wow, that sounds bad
Dougie: Yeah, the doctor told me that I need not use the hearing aids as often to avoid breaking them again until there is a definitive fix
Bingo shifts her sight to look at Dougie worryingly. He just limited himself to nodding at Bingo exasperatedly. She sighed and looked at her cell phone to send more messages.
Bingo: That must suck, im sorry this is happening to you
Dougie: It's okay. I got a lot of help in the last few classes, so I should be fine.
Bingo: Glad to hear it
Dougie: …
Bingo again looks at Dougie, who has a sarcastic face with half-closed eyes.
…
…
…
"BISCUITS!" Bingo exclaimed as looks at her phone to send more messages
Bingo: Im sorry
Bingo: I'm so sorry!
Bingo: I didn't mean to text that!
Bingo: I meant, "I'm glad to know that."
Bingo: Im dumb, alright! I shouldn't have said that.
"Hahahaha"
Bingo looks at Dougie again to find him… laughing. The Cavapoo keeps laughing amiably as Bingo just looks at him, confused. She thought Dougie couldn't speak at all if his device were not on, so why was he laughing?
After laughing for a few seconds, Dougie looks at his cell phone to text Bingo.
Dougie: It's ok
Dougie: I understood what you meant. I'm not that angry at u, lol.
Bingo: Oh, ok…good to know
Dougie: So, how is your second day going so far?
"Oh," Bingo said, leaning her head back until she hit it against the tree bark, gaining Dougie's confused look. How would she explain everything that had happened to her so far during the day? She was going to be as vague as possible. She looked back at her cell phone and typed.
Bingo: Today sucks…not a single good thing has happened to me so far, and I still have two more classes to go
Bingo: I secretly hate this school
Dougie: Oh yeah, Mom told me about this
Dougie: it's normal for newcomers to find it difficult to adapt to the high school life after primary school
Dougie: It's just a matter of spending time at school until you feel comfortable
"A matter of time before you feel comfortable…"
Where did Bingo hear that before?...
Oh yeah…
Her mother
"It's normal to feel what you are feeling."
"It's normal to feel like this on your first day; give it a couple of days, and it will be better."
Both instances were from yesterday, before arriving at school and dinner.
Somehow…that phrase started to rub her the wrong way like it was telling her to keep her feelings to herself…or it was her mother's way of telling her to shut up.
As much as she wants to pour out everything she has been feeling the last 48 hours to Dougie…It's not the best idea to traumatize someone you just met.
After rolling her eyes to think, she shrugged off her own feelings and looked back at her cell phone to send a text message to him.
Bingo: you are starting to sound like my mom lol
Dougie: Is that a compliment?
Bingo: pfff…idk
Dougie: I will take it as a compliment, lol
"Hahaha" Bingo laughs amiably with a wagging happy tail as she looks at Dougie, who also looks at her with his tail wagging.
After being dragged, made fun of, humiliated, schooled at, dismissed, ignored, and Intimidated…For the first time in two days, Bingo finally feels something inside of her… actual, genuine happiness. Thanks to a partially hard-hearing Cavapoo, for the first time in 48 hours, something is clear for her.
As long as Dougie is still around, She will never be alone at school.
"HEY"
An old female scream interrupts both kids as two hands snatch their cellphones out of their paws. Dougie and Bingo snap their heads forward to see an adult German Shepherd teacher with their cell phones.
It's Bingo's social studies teacher…And she was red angry.
"THIS IS RECESS. TALK LIKE NORMAL DOGS," she barks, schooling both of them before walking away with their confiscated cellphones in her hands, leaving Dougie and Bingo with open eyes and mouths, bewildered
Dougie looks at the teacher walking away for a few seconds…Until she looks back at Bingo
Her breathing became significantly heavier, with her chest going in and out. Her eyes locked in anger at her teacher, and her teeth groaned as her lips retracted, showing her dog teeth. She breathed in, making herself look bigger, and next, she pronounced the three words that changed her life and the world—three words that will resound in the history book and be studied for generations to come.
"WHAT THE-
*RINGGGGGGGG*
The school bell rings, muffling Bingo and her big words. Luckily for Dougie, he has his hearing aids off but understands perfectly what she said. He turns on the left hearing aid and comments, "Is she allowed to do that?"
"No…" Bingo says more calmly after letting her frustration out, but her breathing is still heavy. She says, "I really hope not."
Officially, this day is worse than yesterday for Bingo.
But troubles for the day ain't over yet…And Bingo knew that.
