Chapter 23:Freedom Air

The dust had barely settled from the battle when Mighty placed the Chaos Emerald into Sonic's gloved hands. The emerald pulsed weakly, its once-blinding energy dimmed from the struggle. Tails adjusted his goggles and examined it with quiet fascination, while Whisper and Tangle flanked Sonic, both standing at the ready in case Thrash somehow woke up.

Sonic gave Mighty a grateful nod. "You really came through, big guy. We'll take it from here—get this emerald somewhere safe and make sure Thrash gets locked up where he can't hurt anyone."

Mighty exhaled slowly, watching as Thrash lay unconscious, bound in reinforced power-dampening cuffs. Even after everything, it still hurt to see his old friend like this. "Make sure he's treated right, Sonic," Mighty said. "I don't like what he did, but... I ain't about to let him rot away, either."

Sonic's expression softened. "I get it. Iron Lock's tough, but it's not just a hole in the ground. He'll have a chance to cool off... maybe even think things through."

Barby Koala sauntered up, resting a hand on her hip as she surveyed the aftermath. "Right, reckon that's one headache down," she said, her thick Aussie accent cutting through the tension. "But we ain't done yet, mate. Robotnik's zone commander, that Starline creep, is still holdin' Ayers Rock like he owns the place. My Freedom Fighters are already gearing up to kick 'im out. 'Bout time we take our land back."

Mighty crossed his arms. "Then I should stay. Help you finish the job."

Barby shook her head with a smirk. "Nah, ya got bigger fish to fry, mate like finding your sis. You, Ray, and Fiona should head back to Knothole with Sonic and his crew. Knothole's a safe haven, an' I bet you lot could use some proper rest."

Ray, still catching his breath from the fight, nodded. "I... I wouldn't mind that. It's been a while since we've been anywhere safe, huh, Mighty?"

Fiona Fox, on the other hand, tensed. Her crimson fur bristled slightly, and her tail flicked behind her. "I'm not going anywhere until Starline's dealt with," she said firmly. "That psycho's been running experiments, tearing up our land, treating us like we're just numbers on a clipboard. He needs to pay."

Tails chimed in, pushing his goggles up. "I get why you're mad, Fiona, but... there's something else you need to know." He hesitated, glancing at Sonic, who nodded encouragingly. "Your parents—Felix and Felicity Fox—they're alive. They've been in Knothole all this time."

Fiona's ears flattened. She blinked as if she hadn't heard him right. "What?"

Tails swallowed and continued. "They got out. We found them after a raid on one of Robotnik's old processing plants and mines. They've been looking for you ever since."

Fiona's hands clenched into fists. Her breath hitched, and for the first time in years, she looked... lost. "That... that can't be right. I haven't seen them in six years. I thought they were..." She trailed off, shaking her head, as if saying the word dead would make it real.

Mighty stepped beside her, placing a firm but gentle hand on her shoulder. "Fiona, if they're alive, you should go see them."

She turned away, still grappling with the weight of the revelation. "I... I don't know."

Barby exhaled, crossing her arms. "Look, love, I know revenge is real temptin'. But ya only get one family, and if ya got a chance to see 'em again, don't let it slip away. Besides, we got Starline covered."

Sonic clapped his hands together. "So, what's it gonna be, Fi? You coming with us?"

Fiona hesitated a moment longer. Then, finally, she exhaled and looked back at Barby. "Fine. But you'd better finish the job."

Barby grinned. "Wouldn't dream of leavin' it half-done."

With that, Sonic and his crew led the way to the Freedom Stormer, their aircraft waiting just beyond the ruins of the Unluckies camp. Mighty gave Barby one last nod. "Be careful out there."

Barby tipped her hat. "You too, mate."

As the Freedom Stormer took off, Barby stood with her arms crossed, watching as it disappeared over the horizon. Then she cracked her knuckles, turned back toward the wilds of Downunda, and smirked.

"Right, then. Time to raise some hell."

--

Tails flew the Freedom Stormer with practiced ease, the seaplane slicing through the sky as if it were second nature to him. The winds from the vast Downunda wilderness faded behind them, replaced by open skies and the promise of Knothole ahead.

Fiona leaned over the console, taking in the plane's intricate design. She was more comfortable with land vehicles—motorcycles, off-roaders, anything she could feel beneath her feet—but even she had to admit, this was a solid piece of engineering. "Not bad," she murmured, brushing her fingers over the dashboard.

Tails' ears flicked up at the compliment, his twin tails stuttering slightly mid-spin before he righted himself. He glanced back, his face going red. "Uh… thanks! I put a lot of work into it. Reinforced hull, upgraded stabilizers—" He caught himself rambling and cleared his throat. "Glad you think it's cool."

Sonic smirked, watching his little buddy squirm under the attention. It was good to see Tails warming up to Fiona. After everything with Robo-Fiona, he'd been hesitant to even talk to her at first. But meeting the real deal, getting to know her, seemed to be helping him move past all that.

Not everyone was so quick to adjust.

Whisper sat rigid in her seat, her piercing blue eyes locked onto Fiona like a sniper lining up a shot. The wolf barely made a sound, but the low, guttural growl in her throat was unmistakable.

Tangle, lounging between Mighty and Ray, caught the tension and grinned. "You still mad, Whisper? Thought you got over the whole 'Robo Fiona' thing."

Whisper said nothing. She just stared.

Fiona arched an eyebrow. "What's her problem?"

Tails coughed, looking anywhere but at Whisper. "Uh… it's complicated."

"Not really," Tangle teased, wrapping her tail around her seat for balance. "She's jealous."

Whisper's tail bristled, but she said nothing.

Fiona scoffed, crossing her arms. "Seriously? Over what?"

Tangle nudged Whisper playfully. "Oh, c'mon, Wolfy. Just admit it. You were jealous of Robo-Fiona back then, and now you're jealous of the real thing. You don't like anyone getting too close to your cute little fox, huh?"

Whisper's ears flattened, and her grip on her Wispon tightened.

Tails, now visibly sweating, waved his hands frantically. "C-Can we not do this while I'm flying a plane?!"

Tangle burst out laughing. Mighty chuckled under his breath, shaking his head. Even Ray, normally the quietest of the group, grinned.

"Man, I can't wait to get to Knothole," Ray said, leaning back. "Haven't seen a real village in ages. I'm kinda tired of desert towns and frontier camps."

Mighty nodded. "Yeah… a little peace and quiet wouldn't be so bad."

Fiona, arms still crossed, let out a small sigh. She wasn't sure what Knothole would hold for her. After six years of believing her parents were dead, she wasn't even sure how to face them. But one thing was for sure—this trip was going to be anything but boring.

The hum of the Freedom Stormer filled the cockpit as Tails adjusted their trajectory. The rolling green fields of the Great Forest stretched out ahead, a stark contrast to the harsh deserts of Downunda. Knothole was close now.

Fiona sat stiffly, staring out the window as the first signs of civilization emerged between the trees. Her hands curled into fists on her lap. Six years. Six years since she last saw her parents. Six years believing they were gone, that she was alone. Now, in a matter of minutes, she'd be seeing them again. A part of her wanted to turn the plane around.

Sonic, ever perceptive, leaned back in his seat. "You good, Fi?"

Fiona didn't answer at first. Finally, she muttered, "I don't know what I'm supposed to say to them."

Tails glanced over his shoulder. "You don't have to figure it out all at once. Just... be there. That's what matters."

Mighty, sitting across from her, nodded. "They've been waitin' for you. Bet they'll just be happy to see you walk through the door."

Fiona exhaled slowly, running a hand through her bangs. "Guess I'll find out soon enough."

Meanwhile, Whisper still hadn't taken her eyes off Fiona.

Tangle, ever the troublemaker, leaned in toward the wolf. "You gonna stare holes in her all the way to Knothole, or what?"

Whisper's response was a slow, deliberate growl.

Tails, now visibly dying from secondhand embarrassment, tried to defuse things. "Whisper, seriously, I—I barely know Fiona! There's nothing to be—"

Whisper's ears twitched as she shot him a sharp look.

"—I mean, uh, I appreciate the concern?" he finished weakly.

Tangle cackled, slapping her tail against the floor. "She's got it bad, little buddy."

Sonic, smirking at the chaos, decided to steer things in a different direction. "Hey, Ray," he called. "First thing you wanna do when we land?"

Ray perked up, grateful for the distraction. "Honestly? Eat. A real meal. No more dried rations or whatever weird stuff we scrounged up on the road."

Mighty chuckled. "Yeah, man. You deserve it."

Fiona shook her head, finally smirking a little.

"You'd think you guys were starving or something."

"Have you tasted Downunda ration packs?" Ray countered. "Because I'm pretty sure they were made as a joke."

Tails tapped the console, eyes scanning the horizon. "We're almost there. Buckle in, everyone."

The trees of the Great Forest grew closer, and just beyond them, the rooftops of Knothole came into view. The journey was almost over—but for Fiona, the hardest part was still ahead.

To be continued….
