While in my study I set up my desk to be organized in a way that seemed would best fit this year. Then I sat there questioning why Peter was so interested in my life. It's obvious that he doesn't want to be here any longer than necessary, otherwise he wouldn't be seeming to want to keep Jasper and Alice away from me, so why did he care about anything in my life? Was he hoping to use my misfortune to get Jasper and Alice to leave again? They wouldn't want to face the consequences of them knowing what happened, it would be too much for them. Does Peter know what happened? Is he one of them? I'll need to be careful around him, if they think that someone knows what happened they will find me again, I know it.
"Kitten?" How long has Peter been knocking? "I know you said not to bother you unless it's an emergency, but it's 8 and you haven't had dinner yet, do you want me to order you something?" This caused me to zone back into reality, it really was almost 8, could I trust him to order me food?
"No, it's okay, I'll come out and cook something. I didn't realize time flew like that, I was too focused on my work" with that I opened the study door slowly, expecting him to be right at the door but surprised as he was nowhere to be seen. "Pete? Where'd you go?" There was no answer. "Peter, this isnt funny" I said. I looked towards both rooms to see them open but Hazel and Jake weren't there. "Hazel, Jake, where are you?" I yelled while checking the windows in all the rooms. As I finished there I headed towards the living room only to see it suddenly decorated.
I jumped up in fear when I heard "SURPRISE!" Hazel, Peter, Alice, and Jasper all yelled while Jake laid in the corner looking upset.
"I'm sorry Bella, I tried to warn you but they wouldn't let me." Jake said as he slithered over to wrap around my feet in his version of a hug. "We are all wanting to celebrate you starting college but I knew you wouldn't like the surprise after last time"
I went to pat his head, stopping short when I realized my hands were really warm. "Its okay Jake, I appreciate you trying to warn me." I said while giving him a smile. I shifted my gaze over to Alice and Jasper "you guys know how I am with surprises, do you not remember the only birthday I celebrated with you guys in Forks?"
"We do, but I made sure this was Izzy-proofed so that we wouldn't repeat it, don't worry, I don't want a repeat of it either" Alice said while looking towards Jasper, who grimaced and looked at the ground.
"What happened then?" Peter asked. They must not have told him, but he doesn't need to know.
I turned to him with a glare next "It doesn't matter, I just don't want a repeat, but I know this time would be worse. Now, I will warn you, there better not be anymore to this surprise or your ass will be ash" he looked at me like I was joking so I just glared back.
"Peter, she's not joking, I could feel the heat coming from her hands, we almost got fried!" Jake said with all seriousness. "We should tell her the rest"
Peter looked at me surprised before responding. "Jeez Kitten, I didn't realize your claws were that sharp! I apologize." I glared at him as he said this, he made me feel like my family was missing, I wasn't gonna go through that again. "The rest is presents, and I had Jasper walk me through how to make some food for you. The food is in the kitchen whenever you're ready and the presents are in the living room. Should I unwrap those for you too?" He sounded genuine, but I wasn't going to fall for it. Alice and Jasper know I won't unwrap presents anymore, especially around vampires, if I can help it, so why would they allow this? I can't risk hurting Jasper like that again.
Thinking about it though, why would he ask that? If he knows I refuse to unwrap presents, why wrap them? Is it a trap? "I'll unwrap them, I just need scissors, I won't be doing it with my hands." I said, "but first, food. What did you make and are you sure it's edible?" I asked, trying not to overthink things but trusting that if there was something wrong going on Jake or Hazel would let me know.
"Alice said you were from Phoenix so I wanted to try for a more southwestern meal, but one that was hard to fuck up, so, I made you some mexican food. It wasn't around when I was human but supposedly it's spicy and good with eggs, the recipe called it an enchilada." He said with a slightly crinkled nose. "It sure smells terrible to me, but hopefully it doesn't smell as bad to you, and if you don't like them I'll gladly order you food from somewhere." He said quickly when I failed to respond.
"It smells wonderful, one of my friends in Phoenix used to make enchiladas for us about once a week, I definitely missed them. I could never get the tortillas cooked right, so there's some high expectations there." I smiled as a way to hopefully distract him as I drew up some wind to separate the smells from the food to make sure nothing was wrong with it before taking a bite⦠and immediately spitting it out. "Peter, what color was the rue when you cooked it?" I asked as I reached for a soda to rinse out the flour taste in my mouth.
"What's a rue?" He asked, causing me to chuckle.
"Well, you just fed me raw flour" I laughed at the look of horror on his face, "so now you owe me edible food" I stated and headed back to the living room.
A/N: I already failed my once a month updating, however, I have valid reasons. I just started a new job and as I was getting settled into that my computer decided to take the forever sleep, so I'm typing on my phone, which isn't ideal for formating and such, but I know if I don't find time to write I won't finish the story again.
