Chapter 3
"Looks like Klass and her partner had a pretty good thing going," Velasco looked at the list of cases the two had solved. Regrettably, or not, the newer SVU detective couldn't be sure, most of the list were still in jail.
"That they did," Olivia pulled a picture out of the file of Jared Nott and tacked it to the board.
"What happened to him?" The detective asked.
"Jared and Betty were injured while serving Afghanistan. Jared died of a blood clot, post-surgery," his Captain explained.
"Geez. Ok so he's been gone long enough that our guy is focusing on the one detective left," Velasco figured.
"I hate to say it but maybe we need to be looking at a case that was iffy," Olivia heaved a sigh.
"You mean like the perp claimed he was framed?" He wondered.
"I know it won't help narrow the field but we have to figure out if there is a motive to come after Detective Klass," she said.
"What if Akiko is the target and Klass was helping her ditch an old boyfriend?" Bruno's voice cut into their discussion, causing the two to look up.
"What'd you find in the apartment?" Olivia wanted to know.
"Someone had definitely been in the apartment. We found Betty's dog food all over the floor and someone scrawled this on her living room wall," Fin said as he handed over his phone to Olivia.
"You can't hide forever," Olivia frowned.
"How does that mean Klass was helping Akiko?" Velasco was confused.
"We found a ripped-up application for a restraining order on Klass's kitchen counter. The landlord agreed to have patrol officers man both apartments overnight and have a surveillance team sit outside the building at night. He's worried that whoever this unhinged guy is, he'll target his other tenants," Bruno said. Olivia nodded.
"Was there a name on the restraining order?" She asked.
"If there was, our guy got rid of it. Forensics is checking for prints and anything else that may give us a clue," Fin explained. Olivia's phone buzzed and she quickly pulled it out of her pocket and answered it.
"What'd you guys find so far?" Bruno asked Velasco.
"A lot of the guys that Klass and her old partner busted are still locked up but there are a couple that could be promising. Though your thoughts kind of throw a monkey wrench into that," the detective said.
"Well with the world of online dating, one of our guys from your list could have been lying to Akiko. Klass wouldn't know unless her neighbor mentions it or she sees the guy. Though I would have thought she would have told us that when she saw the Captain," Bruno admitted.
"That was Klass. The protective detail for Akiko has arrived. She and Gonzales are heading back here. We'll be able to go over all of it soon. Fin, my office," Olivia announced when she got off the phone. The Sergeant quickly followed her into her office.
"What's up Liv?" Fin asked.
"Huang will be meeting us in the morning. I want a few more details shaken out before he gets here. What I don't want anyone to know is that he's going to be analyzing Detective Klass while he's here," the Captain said.
"Why? You don't trust her?" Fin gave her a look.
"No. I trust her, but I worry that she's too close and that this is going to bring up a few things that maybe she isn't ready to handle. I hate spying on her but we need to know what we're dealing with," Olivia told him.
"She can't stay at her place tonight. You want me to set up a hotel room for her?" Fin pointed out. That was likely to make her more on edge.
"No. She can come home with me. Having Noah to keep an eye on Betty, may allow us to talk more openly," Olivia figured.
"All right, you got it," Fin nodded.
"Make sure that Detective Gonzales goes home though huh? This is strictly an NYPD issue and I don't want him getting involved, if we can manage it," she said.
"On it," Fin nodded again.
