A silence fell over the meeting and although Orik's face soured and King Orrin frowned, it was Roran who spoke first "I get why everyone else is here, but why me? It's not my monkey and not my circus."

This broke the tension slightly as Nasuada chuckled "blunt as always aren't you Roran? I called you here because essentially your opinion matters too many of us here for the simple fact because like it or not your opinion carries much weight with the common folk, especially the former members of the Varden and as such you are a true representation of the common man."

Before the meeting could descend into arguments king Orik spoke sensing King Orrin was about to disagree. Looking at Arya he said "So what that sewer rat said is true then? I find that very hard to believe, especially after what Lord Datheder told me."

Arya nodded her head "I am afraid it's true. After Murtagh recovered from his wounds and had spoken to Eragon. I was asked by the Lord rider to visit Nasuada's palace and speak with him directly, it is also the reason why afterwards I sent Lord Datheder himself as an envoy to your kingdom to alert you of the facts.

In the meanwhile I had one of my best spell casters probe Thorn and Murtagh's mind for any deceit, I then personally went with Firnen and a few of the Eldunari to the place that Murtagh described and was able to confirm his story, all the facts line up."

Eragon spoke up for the first time "Brother Orik, I understand the pain that dwells within you, however it has been almost two years since the war and almost three since Hrothgar fell in battle, but you knew better than anyone else, that this day was coming or have you and King Orrin forgotten what memories Nasuada, Arya, The Eldunari and I shared with you shortly after Nasuada was declared Queen."

"Blast it Eragon, Hrothgar was my Father, and that sorry excuse for a Dragon Rider killed him without a fair fight!"He then fumed for a few minutes before visibly calming down. Then turning to Umaroth and Glaedr he said "Elders, I would hear your opinion on this, especially you Glaedr-Elda as you also suffered a direct loss at his hands."

Umaroth spoke first "I can understand your anger Dwarf king, however unlike you I have observed Murtagh since a young age, and he has not had an easy life, while that does not excuse his actions. I do understand the reason for them, because while some acts he committed were in anger and frustration, the majority of his actions were done out of love, love for his dragon and a desperate attempt to survive. In reality he too was a prisoner of the mad king with only the illusion of freedom."

Glaedr sighed heavily before speaking in the ancient language "I will not insult your intelligence by saying, I am completely comfortable with the idea of Murtagh joining our ranks, however it is easy for one to hate, but it is hard to forgive, yet no matter the difficulty a warrior's true strength is in forgiveness, for if he does not he will light his own pyre with his hate."

I do not deny it was his sword that separated Oromis and I from each forever, the hand that swung that sword belonged not to him but the mad king instead. Oromis and I were both wise enough to know this could be a possibility when we decided to leave Ellesméra. At this moment I can say that my Thirst for revenge has been mostly Quenched and that yes, it is time now for Murtagh to join his Brothers and become a Shurtugal in full."

While Orik pondered the dragon's words Roran spoke "this is all fine and dandy, but pretty words will not assuage the common folk. Only actions will." He then turned towards Nasuada "Your majesty, if you are indeed serious about this endeavor than you will have to create a reason for that, perhaps a bit of sleight of hand would be better suited here than the truth."

Nasuada nodded "that is already on progress, I have created a story that my father upon learning who Murtagh was, hatched a plan for Murtagh to fake his death and join Galbatorix ranks as a spy and double agent for the Varden."

"That is a good start, I suggest speaking with Jeod as well, and maybe he can refine the story a bit, although from what i hear he seems to be flourishing being a Duke with his head deep in the History books while his wife is busy making a big pile of Gold. if possible. I will help where I can, but if you really want this plan to succeed, the Dwarves will have to back your plan publicly, and it's widely known they hate him for killing their king.

A good number of Hangings of Corrupt officials from the mad king's court will also go a long way, especially if Murtagh is officially credited with their ousting. Maybe if you want to be extremely brutal have Thorn roast some of the worst ones in the public square. I'm sure you can find a few baby killers and other foul pieces of vermin within your ranks." He then turned towards King Orrin "Sire, you are a Scholar and a King. How do you suggest we write the history books?"

King Orrin was mollified slightly at the praise "now that is an interesting question indeed, perhaps after all this happens a few times, we have our people in a few select cities start introducing the subject of the Red Rider being an ally all along and then slowly leak information about how he helped Eragon and Queen Arya defeat the mad king. This will in turn create a natural curiosity within them and those bold enough will try to find out the truth for themselves.

Turning to Arya he said "this is where your subjects will come in, many of them will be approached to verify this information. However the answer has to be vague, but heavily imply the actual events, perhaps even have them add a few details of their own."

Arya nodded her head in Acknowledgement while the Urgal chief who had been silent up till now spoke up "For us Urgalgra the matter is simple and our elders have ruled on this matter clearly Blood sword and Blood tongue are in effect members of the Urgals since they swore brotherhood to our Kinsman Uvek. So it matters not to us, but to maintain peace, we will act as per your wishes Fire sword and Fire tongue in the interests of peace."

Umaroth interrupted "We yet create castles in the air cousin, all of these elaborate plans hinge on the Dwarf King's decision. What say you King Orik? What is to be your decision?"

When still Orik was silent after many moments Eragon spoke in a formal tone "Grimstborith Orik, Saphira would speak to you."

Orik looked up from his thoughts at that and focused on Saphira's face "Orik, Do you remember that once upon a time, when I helped repair Isidar Mithrim, As king of the Dwarves you once promised me and my Rider a boon to be collected on at any time in exchange for restoring your people's sapphire back to its former Glory?"

King Orik looked at her shrewdly for a moment "indeed I remember Saphira Bright scales, however what you ask of me is incredibly difficult, for you ask me to pardon a man responsible for the death of my Knurlan."

Saphira blew smoke out of her nostrils saying "no, I do not ask you to pardon him Orik, I ask you to redeem him. There is a difference, did you not once ask Eragon to put his trust in you saying to believe your commitment to defeat the mad king, exceeded your ambition to be king.

Do you also remember you once said the memory of Dwarves was too long for their own good sometimes, were those just the empty words of a savvy diplomat or were those words of a Knurlan who understood the price of Honor and integrity?"

"Like Eragon, you have learnt your lessons on our culture well, let it not be said a Knurlan was ungrateful or did not know the price of Honor and Integrity." He straightened his pose and in a formal voice said "Ask of me for a boon Saphira Bright scales and should it be within my power to grant I shall grant it freely."

"before I ask for my boon King of the Knurlan, is there a provision within the laws of your land for someone accused of murder and has expressed remorse to be punished in such a way that will not cause permanent impairment to life or limb."

King Orik seemed thoughtful for a moment "I am not certain of it 100% but I believe in some exigent circumstances there are certain provisions for this".

"If that is so, then I implore you to ask your readers of law find such a provision and use it to fulfill my boon by punishing The Rider and Dragon known as Murtagh and Thorn for the Death of King Hrothgar and by punishing them for this crime may they be redeemed within the eyes of the Dwarves. As leaders of the Dragon Riders Eragon and I promise to abide by your ruling and shall not interfere with it unless permanent damage to life and limb is evident."

The room fell silent for a moment as the monarchs realized exactly what Saphira was implying; in part she had staked their honor and lives on this endeavor.

Umaroth spoke first "you bring glory to your race Saphira, and it speaks well of your station. However just as our honor is yours to uphold, so is your honor ours to uphold. We Eldunari will once again intervene in the matters for Alagaësia and help its citizens be more receptive to your efforts. Glaedr and I will personally visit both Ellesméra and Tronjheim too if required and discuss this with the elves and Dwarves. However it goes without saying that these matters are to be guarded extremely closely."

You honor us with your presence elders but our politics are complex and while your might is well known, I am not sure it would be a good idea for the average Knurlan to know of your existence. I would limit that knowledge to only the thirteen clan chiefs."

He then turned towards Eragon "what you ask of me will be done brother; however it will cost me much, and will not be easy to do."

"Eragon nodded somberly "I understand Orik, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy, and while you may lose some, something tells me you will gain much in this endeavor."

King Orik looked at him suspiciously "what are you hiding from me Argetlam?"

Eragon laughed "A great many things brother, worry not all will be revealed in time."
