A Quiet Apology
The door closed softly behind Snow, and for a moment, it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. His presence, his cold gaze, had somehow cast a shadow over everything. I wanted to breathe, to speak, to explain everything, but I knew the time wasn't right. Not with him still in the picture.
I didn't wait for Katniss to say anything, I couldn't. Without thinking, I dropped to my knees in front of her, my heart pounding in my chest. My hands trembled as I held them together, fingers twisting in the desperate need to say the words I hadn't yet voiced.
"Katniss, please," I whispered, my voice breaking as I looked up at her. Her eyes were hard, unreadable. "Please, forgive me. I know I've made terrible choices, and I've hurt you. But I swear, I never meant to. I didn't want this… to be a part of his world."
Katniss didn't move, didn't speak. The silence between us was suffocating, but I couldn't pull away.
"I know you think I've betrayed you," I continued, my voice barely above a whisper, "and in a way, I have. I let myself get lost in the Capitol's games. But I don't want to be a part of that anymore. I can't be. Not if it means losing you."
I paused, hoping she could see the sincerity in my eyes. There was no trickery, no manipulation, just raw, vulnerable honesty.
"I don't want to be his daughter. I never did. I don't want to be a part of his world, and I don't want to hurt you anymore," I said, my voice trembling as the weight of my words hit me.
Katniss remained still, her lips pressed tightly together, but I saw the flash of something in her eyes—something that was neither anger nor contempt, but something softer.
Finally, she exhaled sharply and crouched down in front of me, her eyes locked onto mine. "You've made this mess, Emerald," she said, her voice low but steady. "And you can't just undo it with an apology. But…" She hesitated, her gaze softening for a moment. "I'm willing to give you a chance. For now."
Relief flooded through me like a tide, and I barely suppressed the urge to smile. I wasn't forgiven yet, not completely, but it was a start.
"I promise," I whispered, nodding vigorously, "I'll prove myself. I'll do anything to make it right."
Katniss reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder, her grip firm but not unkind. "You have a long way to go, Emerald. Don't think you can fix it all overnight. But… for now, let's just see where this goes."
I nodded again, my heart lighter than it had been in months. The road ahead would be hard, and I would have to earn her trust again, but this was something I could work with.
I stood up slowly, taking a deep breath as I finally allowed myself to feel a flicker of hope. This wasn't over, not by a long shot. But maybe—just maybe—I could start to make things right.
