Hidden behind a veil of perpetual fog, there was an Island that is the home of the massive and fearsome dragon tyrant, the Red Death. A Red Death's head is heavily armed with a nasal horn, a coral-shaped frill, and jaws that are lined up with huge, needle-like teeth. Red Deaths possess three pairs of eyes on each side of their head that give them little to no blind spots. Their coloration is mainly a grayish blue with an orange underside, and their enormous bodies sport coral-like spines as well as red spikes that give this dragon species its name. The tail of a Red Death is tipped with an ankylosaur-like bludgeon that can be used as a devastating weapon. Despite their gargantuan size, the wings of a Red Death are more than large and strong enough to give the dragon a full-powered flight.
The Nest is located on an island assumed to be far off from Berk. There is a perpetual heavy mist that enshrouds the sea in the surrounding area, preventing anything, save for a dragon, from finding it. This would help protect everyone on the island and the Red Death herself. The Red Death is a gigantic dragon species, only being surpassed in size by the titanic Bewilderbeasts.
For centuries, the seafaring and warmongering Vikings of Berk launched countless campaigns to locate and raze the fabled Dragon Island in the hopes of ending the regular dragon sieges on their homeland… only to return empty-handed time and time again. If they were to even ever return at all. Previous generations of Vikings have always failed to come near the island, as dragons follow a signal heard only by dragons to the caldera at the heart of the volcanic Dragon Island. It keeps them all from either running into sea stacks or other boats that have crashed and other hazards.
There, from deep within a pool of lava, the Red Death commanded all dragons to raid Viking villages and return with all stolen foods to feed its ravenous appetite. Either coming by air or ship must pass through Helheim's Gate, which itself is a very treacherous area to navigate.
It comprises jagged rock structures jutting out of the waters, a beach of gravel, and one, a sole volcano. Once one bypasses the mist, the chunks of stone scattered about prove to be more than enough of a challenge for most Vikings to navigate through safely, as well as anything else without a thorough knowledge of where to go. The beach itself is peculiar in that, rather than being covered in sand, it is composed primarily of what appears to be pebbles. As a result, making contact with the ground on the island of the Dragons' Nest amplifies sound rather than muffling it as would be the case with normal sand, often tipping off the inhabitants of the island to any intruders.
Lastly, the volcano of the island, which, from the base, appears to be nothing more than a mountain, provides the physical structure of the Dragons' Nest. Along with the caverns and tunnels that wind around the periphery and inner layers of the volcano presumably live almost all dragons seen in the film. Within the pool of lava in the center, however, lives a Red Death. Though dragons have been long known to gather food from the Vikings or otherwise, it was only recently discovered that this food is delivered to the mouth of the volcano so that the Red Death may feed. Any dragons that bring back a particularly small catch or nothing at all are eaten by it.
One dragon was currently flying around the island of Berk during another raid. Causing mayhem by shooting the catapults and their large torches.
This dragon shared many similarities to the dragon Hiccup transformed into. It is shown to have sky-blue eyes and white scales with glittering textures, along with some light blue on her belly, tail flukes, and underwings. She has a single, long spine running down her back, a pair of large, ear-like adapters on the top of her head, and two smaller ones on the side.
She also has triangular wing flukes and tail flukes that are glittery white. Her wings are glittery white with glittery pink strips running down both of them. Her tail flukes resemble a heart in shape. She has fewer scale details than Toothless and possesses a smoother silhouette. Her scales, although at a glance appear purely white, are mingled with scintillating shades of pearlescent pink, pale blue, and purple, giving her a more sleek and feminine appearance than Night Furies.
As she saw the sun was beginning to rise, she noticed that the party was starting to retreat to the nest. The Red Death never troubled her to bring anything back as she knew the Light Fury was usually there for support. But she has also learned through gossip within the nest that there was another. Some whispers going around that there was a darker, black-as-night, version of her around.
But she tends not to believe rumors that are spread through Zipplebacks as they are known to be delirious and mischievous. Except that's when she landed in a cove she learned about so she could get some water before her flight home. As she landed and shook off the debris, dust, and anything else she gained during the raid, she approached the water.
That's when she spotted him.
She heard a growl coming from the other end of the lake, causing her to jump a little and start to become defensive. Then his eyes became visible as the light from the rising sun began to pierce through the shadows that he was hiding within. And a paw stepped out of the darkness into the light. Then the Light Fury ultimately saw the full body of the alleged Night Fury, showing that it did share many similarities to her species.
"Who...who are you?" Light Fury wonders as she eyed the dragon.
But instead of speaking, the Night Fury looked up to the sun and started to shake its head. If the Light Fury didn't know any better, it was as if it was infected by a Grimora. But the lack of oozing saliva crushed that thought from her mind. But what was surprising to her was when she tried to get closer, the Night Fury screeched and caused her to stay away.
The Night Fury then took upward and spread its wings, immediately blasting into the air. She was amazed to see that this dragon was faster than most dragons she's come across. But when she flew up to try and follow him, she noticed that he was nowhere to be seen. She was curious about who he was and where he came from. It was unlikely he came from the Nest, so where does he stay? What if he actually lives in this cove and she never realized it?
Whatever it was, it could wait until later. She was late enough as it was to get back to the Nest before the Red Death tried to call her back. And she knew that she wouldn't try to, but she rather not risk it.
Hiccup gasped awake and was shocked that instead of in the middle of the woods he was used to, he was actually sleeping outside of his house. He looked and saw his clothes were nowhere to be found and quickly sneaked his way inside. His father was aware of his tendency to sleepwalk (at least that's what they thought was happening) but wasn't quite aware of the constant torn-up clothes. He always went out of his way to fix up his clothes (if they were ever found) or would make some of his own out of other materials.
Back with the Light Fury, she flew away from Berk and went into the cloud cover to head for Dragon Island. The Light Fury banks and dives in formation with the others, plummeting through the thickening fog and weaving between towering, craggy sea stacks.
They emerge at the base of a massive volcanic caldera, glowing with rivulets of lava. The flock of dragons falls into rank, funneling through a crack, and zipping through a winding tunnel. It gives way to a vast, steamy inner chamber, tiered with pocky shelves. Dragons of all breeds lay about, nested in hordes. The arriving dragons fly in, dropping the fish and game into a central pit, glowing red and shrouded in mist.
The Light Fury then flew over to a portion of the nest where she would sleep for the day and rest to regain strength. She was happy to be back to get some rest, but she couldn't help but think about that...Night Fury. She has heard rumors of a species that matched them but could blend into the night. They were called Night Furies and were said to be the offspring of lightning and death itself. Said to be so strong, that no dragon ever walked away from a fight against one. Only those who were there to witness the fight were able to tell the tale of the fight.
But they have been rumored to have gone extent.
Could that possibly have been the last of their kind? Did she discover the last Night Fury alive? One thing was for sure, she was going to go back and find out what she could put together.
Then the next night, another raid went off. Except for this time, Hiccup didn't end up walking off and managed to help out. He made his way through the village and the fires going on around him to try and reach the blacksmiths.
"Oh, nice of you to join the party. I thought you'd been carried off." Gobber, the blacksmith, told Hiccup as he raced to his station.
"Wha-Who? Me? Nah, come on, we are way too muscular for their taste," Hiccup said as he lifted a heavy hammer up and put it on some nails on the wall. "I mean, they wouldn't know what to do with all…this!"
Hiccup struck a muscular pose, exposing the 'muscles' in his arms. The blacksmith rolled his eyes while working out to make more weapons and fix the others that were broken.
"Well, they need toothpicks, don't they?" Gobber asked as he changed his replaceable hand as Hiccup opened the small doors.
Vikings came up at once with a few broken swords, urging them to hurry and fix them. As he continued to work, Hiccup managed to lean his head to the side so he could peek outside. Still chaos, all around as he looked over to the side and he saw a house suddenly burst into flames.
"FIRE!" Someone called out.
"Alright, let's go!"
Hiccup whipped his head around and leaned out the window to look outside. He could see a large barrel being pulled by a crate, and around it, he saw five figures, all of them carrying buckets of water. They were the only other teens in the village. You don't want to know what happened to the others.
Hiccup leaned more out the window but was suddenly hooked up under his collar and yanked up, so his feet were off the ground, by Gobber.
"Aww, Gobber!" Hiccup wined as he was dangling like a salmon. "Come on! Let me out, please! I need to make my mark!"
"Oh, you've made plenty of marks all in the wrong places!" Gobber said as he poked Hiccup's stomach with his hook.
"Please, just give me two minutes!" Hiccup begged. "I'll kill a dragon; my life will get infinitely better." He then gestured outside the blacksmith. "I might even get a date."
"You can't lift a hammer, you can't swing an ax, you can't even throw one of these," Gobber said as he held up a large bola in his hand.
A second later it was snatched away by another Viking who used it to take down a Gronckle. Ignoring Gobber, Hiccup pushed past him and walked back towards his bola launcher.
"Okay, fine, but this will throw it for me." Hiccup said as he walked over and patted the surface of his invention, which somehow accidentally triggered it.
It then sent a bola inside of it flying across the blacksmiths. Gobber dodged it and it flew out the window, hitting another Viking in the face.
"See, now this right here is what I'm talkin' about!" Gobber said sternly, marching up to Hiccup.
Hiccup shook my head. "Mild calibration issue…"
"If you ever want to get out there to fight dragons, you need to stop all…this." Gobber gestured his arms all over him.
"But you just pointed to all of me!" Hiccup stated.
"Yes! That's it! Stop being all of you." Gobber informed him.
"Oooh…" Hiccup said sarcastically.
"Oh, yes," Gobber mimicked.
"You, sir, are playing a very dangerous game," Hiccup said, trying to sound threatening. "Keeping this much, raw…Viking-ness contained. There will be consequences!"
"I'll take my chances," Gobber replied, unaffected or even scared as he tossed a sword into Hiccup's arms. "Swords. Sharpen. Now."
"Ugh, w-whatever," Hiccup grunted.
He lifts the sword in their arms and lay it on the grinding wheel and starts to sharpen it, concentrating carefully.
Outside, a Nadder was ripping a farm apart and taking sheep with them as they flew off. A Gronckle picked at a row of meat and flew off with it in its mouth and another carries a mouthful of fish. A Zippleback was a dragon with two heads, one releasing gas inside a house and the other using a spark to burn the house down.
"They found the sheep!" A Viking cried.
"Concentrate fire over the lower bank!" Stoick demanded him as they aimed the bigger catapults and took the dragons down. Stoick looked down at the dock of the catapult as it was engulfed in flames by a Nightmare. "Reload! I'll take care of this."
He then started to fight the Nightmare with a weapon in his hand. Except that was when the whole village heard the ear-piercing screech fill the air.
"Night Fury!"
"Get down!"
BOOM!
The sound of the catapult exploding filled the air. The blast caused Stoick to abandon the catapult and jump off the ledge. Another shot came in and blasted another catapult farther away. The speed of this one dragon amazes just about everyone.
Hiccup turned around and went back inside the stall. Once he did, he then saw Gobber trade his hammer hand for a large ax to help the people.
"Man the fort. They need me out there!" He said and headed for the door, then stopped and turned to face them and pointed at him. "Stay…Put…There…Yah know what I mean!"
Gobber stared at him when he finally gave a loud yell and ran into the fire. The boy then looked at an opening and quickly grabbed the launcher, put his vest back on, and pushed it outside through the cluster of Vikings. He swerved it through the mayhem, just narrowly avoiding other people.
"Where are you going?"
"Come back here!"
"I know, be right back!" Hiccup called out.
He continued running until he finally came to the top of a large cliff and got to a gigantic clearing where he knew that he wouldn't hit anything. He brought the launcher to the edge and dropped the handles on the ground. Hiccup unfolded it, cranking several levers, and bowed the arms. He then dropped a bola into a chamber and pointed the weapon up toward the sky. He stood there, waiting for something to present itself in the cold darkness of the sky.
"C'mon," Hiccup muttered. "Give me something to shoot at, give me something to shoot at…"
He stared up at the sky, listening carefully for something, anything. Then there was a loud whistling sound that started echoing, slowly growing louder and louder. Then Hiccup thought that he could see a strange shape against the dark blue sky making its way through the air.
There was a loud swooshing sound, and another tower was blasted at and burst into flames. Taking careful aim at the creature, Hiccup quickly pulled the trigger. Once he did, the force pushed him back and he fell flat on his back.
Hiccup sat up as quickly as he could and looked up as they heard a loud screech fill the air. He saw the dragon fall, passing him so that he could see the dark figure falling and crashing down just off of Raven's Point.
Two seconds of shocked silence followed as he just stared in amazement.
Hiccup smiled as he realized that he did. He hit it. He jumped up, yelling in triumph and joy. "Yes, I hit it! Did anybody else see that?!"
But his victory was not to last. Behind him, there was a loud crashing sound mixed with the sound of splintering wood. He flinched, then slowly turned around to see a large Monstrous Nightmare, its large foot on top of what was left of Hiccup's launcher.
"Except for you," Hiccup said bluntly.
The Nightmare reared its head back, a low grow building in its throat, and small flames flaring from its nostrils. And he knew exactly what was about to happen. Without hesitating, Hiccup turned and started sprinting as fast as he could when the dragon tried to chase him.
He ran back into the village, dodging fire being blasted at him. Thinking about where he could just hide, Hiccup hid behind a brazier pole and waited. A blast of fire hit it, surrounding the whole thing and just barely missing him. Hiccup turned around, avoiding the flames, and tried to see if the Nightmare was still there.
The Nightmare came round the other side ready to finish him off. Suddenly the Chief seemed to jump out of nowhere and tackled the dragon. He had a small stare-off, and the dragon tried to blast more of its fire, but only ended up spitting it out. The dragon gave a look that said 'uh-oh' as the chief had a look of indifference on.
"You're all out." Stoick was happy to say
He marched forward, raising his beefy fists. He punched and kicked the Nightmare before it backed up and flew away. Suddenly the pole Hiccup was standing behind broke due to the base being on fire. It fell to the side, exposing him; just standing there knowing he was in for it.
The iron basket that was once on top of the pole bounced down the hill, destroying everything in its path, and scattering all the Vikings. He hissed, winced, and made a couple of facial expressions as he watched the destruction continue.
"Sorry, dad…" Hiccup said, not looking at Stoick's angry face.
The basket freed all the dragons, and cause dozens of others to slip and fall, making it easy for the dragons to fly off and take their supplies. They all looked up at the sky to see all the dragons carrying most of their supplies, as mentioned. He bit his lips nervously, turning slowly to look at his dad. He had an unreadable glare all over his face. He just shrugged and pointed outward.
"Okay, but I hit a Night Fury." Hiccup tried to add but yelped as his dad grabbed him by his collar and started dragging him away.
