Before the whole target and shooting it down moment, the Light Fury was flying around the island of Berk to try and meet the Night Fury in the air. There was no way that the dragon would avoid raiding for food and resources with all the Vikings focusing on them.
Flying around the chaos that immediately ensued when they arrived, the Vikings were all trying their best to shoot them down best they can. They managed to capture a few Gronkles, but they were quickly rescued by Nightmares and nearby Nadder's who came to save them.
Quickly using her special ability, the Light Fury shot a plasma blast that she flew into. Using it as a smokescreen, she managed to turn herself invisible so she could hide from plain view. She used this to her advantage to fight and destroy their catapults and the torches they would use to spot them coming and going.
Seems that they have even mistaken her for the fearful Night Fury, which she had to admit wasn't too far off. They do share many traits and are part of the same family of dragons. Similar to how Night Terrors are in the same family as Terrible Terrors. Where Vikings and humans have classes for the different types of dragons, the dragons themselves see things differently. Instead of class, they refer to them as family. And they don't categorize themselves the same way humans do. Basically, all they have to be is have the same traits as the other dragon, whether it be from their appearance or from the abilities they possess.
She saw that the raids were starting to loosen out and the dragons were retreating with as much food as they can carry for the Red Death. Seeing only one torch left, she decided it would be best to take it down so they couldn't be spotted heading for the nest so as to stop them from getting any ideas. She charged up another plasma blast and blew their torch and expected to turn and fly away.
Except that was interrupted by the sudden contraption being shot and her tails and fins being wrapped around her wings and she screeched and ended up falling. She let out a screech as she kept going and pummeled into the forest. Ironically she was falling right nearby the cove, so maybe she could be rescued by the Night Fury. When she fell, she ended up cratering the ground a little, but she managed to keep her tail securely close. As she eventually rolled down the hill, she kept going until she ended up hitting her head against a tree.
"Night...Night Fury." Light Fury whimpered out, sounding like a screech to anyone who wasn't a dragon. "...Help...please..."
But she saw the sun begins to rise, and there was no sign of any rescue coming. There were no dragons coming to her aid, and there was no aid coming of any kind. She was stuck either waiting for death by Viking, dragon or even some other random animal in the woods.
"No, it's not like the last times, Dad. I mean I really did hit it this time! You guys were busy, and I had a very clear shot." Hiccup started to explain as Stoick was dragging him off. "I saw it go down just off Raven Point. We need to get a search party out there before-"
"STOP!" Stock cried as Hiccup quickly shut his mouth, wincing a little bit at the loudness.
"Just…stop. Every time you step outside, disaster follows!" Stoick snarled, causing Hiccup to wince as his father raised his voice. "Can you two not see that I got bigger problems? Winter is almost here, and I have an entire village to feed!"
"…Well, between us, the village could do with a little less feeding, don't ya think?" Hiccup said with a little mumble to himself.
"This isn't a joke!" Stoick snapped. "Ugh, why can't yah follow the simplest orders?"
"I-I can't stop myself!" Hiccup defended. "I see a dragon and I have to just… kill it, ya know? It's who I am, Dad."
Stoick rubbed his forehead, looking stressed.
"Oh, you are many things, Hiccup, but dragon killers are not one of them. Get back to the house." Stoick tells Hiccup. "Make sure he gets there," He said to Gobber, who smacked the back of his head. "I have this mess to clean up."
They passed up all the other Vikings, who were looking down at them in a disappointing way. Then as we passed up the other teens they laughed and pointed at them.
"Quite the performance," said Tuffnut, smirking before Ruffnut pushed him.
"I've never seen anyone mess up that badly," Snotlout said, starting to get into Hiccup's face. "That helped!"
"Thank you, thank you, at least I was trying," Hiccup muttered. "So..."
Hiccup and Gobber continued to walk to their house, neither of them saying a word.
"I swear, Gobber, I really hit one." Hiccup tried to defend himself.
"Sure, lad," Gobber said, not believing it.
Hiccup rolled his eyes. "Dad never listens."
"Well, it runs in the family," Gobber added.
"And whenever he does it's always with this…disappointed scowl like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwich," Hiccup then turned around and started to mock his dad's voice. "'Excuse me, barmaid, I'm afraid yah brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra-large boy, one with beefy arms, extra guts, and glory on the side. This here, this is a talking fishbone!'"
"Now you're thinking about this all wrong." Gobber tried to correct Hiccup. "It's not so much what yah look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand."
Hiccup's jaw opened and his brows furrowed. "Thank you for summing that up," he said sarcastically, as he grabbed the door handle.
"Look, the point is, you need to stop trying so hard to be something you're not." Gobber tried to explain to him.
"I just wanna be one of you guys," Hiccup said hopelessly as he went inside.
Gobber let out a sigh and left, wishing there was something that he could do to help his apprentice. He does all he can, but there's not much he can really do for the boy to help throughout this situation. He needed to work it out himself that there's no changing who you are.
But he missed how when he walked away, Hiccup went out the back door and made his way into the forest. Hiccup was going to prove to them all that he actually did shoot that Fury down.
But that's when everything was going to change.
The Vikings stood around a large table in the main hall. Stoick stood over the table with a large map spread in front of him. He stabbed the area covered in fog.
"Either we finish them, or they'll finish us! It's the only way we'll be rid of them!" Stoick shouted for everyone to hear. "If we find the nest and destroy it the dragons will leave! They'll find another home!" He slammed a knife into the corner of the map, where there were paintings in the corner of the map. "One more search before the ice sets in."
"Those ships never come back!" A random Viking said.
"We're Vikings! It's an occupational hazard. Now, who's with me?!" Stoick shouted to the hall of Vikings.
The Vikings fell into silence with a few of them mumbling. Stoick could see that none of them were going to be willing to go and decided to go with the only thing he had left.
"All right then. Those who stay will look after Hiccup." Immediately everyone's hands shot up and everyone cheered, willing to go. "Aye, that's better."
Soon the room began to empty as they were getting ready to go and soon all that was left was Gobber and Stoick.
"All right I'll pack my undies," Gobber said, setting down the mug he was drinking from.
"No, I need you to stay here and train some new recruits," Stoick said as he walked over to the table Gobber was sitting on.
"Oh, yes, and while I'm busy Hiccup could cover the store! Molten steel, razor-sharp the blades, lots of time to himself." Gobber said sarcastically. "What could possibly go wrong?"
Stoick sighed and looked down at his feet. "What am I gonna do with him, Gobber?"
"Put him in training with the others," Gobber said as if it was a simple answer.
"I'm serious" Stoick replied.
"So am I."
"He would be killed before you let the first dragon out of its cage!" Stoick said trying to talk some sense into him.
"Oh, you don't know that."
"I do know that."
"No, you don't."
"No, actually I do."
"No, you don't!"
"Listen, you know how he is. Since the time that he could crawl, he's been...different..." Stoick sighed as he was unaware of just how true that statement was. "He never listens, he has the attention span of a sparrow! I took Hiccup fishing, and he went hunting for...For trolls!"
"Trolls exist!" Gobber cried as he turned around sharply, waving his mug around in defense. "They steal your socks! Only the left ones. What's up with that?"
"When I was a boy..." Stoick started.
Gobber sighed as he knew exactly what was going to say next. "Oh, here we go."
Stoick ignored him and continued. "My father told me to bang my head against a rock, and I did it. I thought I was crazy, but I didn't question him. And do you know what happened?"
"You got a headache," Gobber replied, adding some humor on his part as he's heard this before.
"That rock broke split in two! It taught me what a Viking could do, Gobber. He could crush mountains, level forests, tame seas!" Stoick sighed before sitting next to Gobber again. "Even as a boy, I know what I was, what I had to become. Hiccup is not that boy."
"You can't stop him, Stoick. You can only prepare him." Gobber paused, making sure his friend was listening. "I know it seems hopeless, but the truth is you won't always be around to protect him. He's going to get out there again. He's probably out there now!"
After some time, the young man managed to make his way to Raven's Point, still searching for the dragon to figure out where it crashed. Hiccup was searching everywhere for the dragon, taking out a notebook where he had marked everywhere he had already looked. He had planned out the trajectory and speed he saw the dragon crash but couldn't find it anywhere. He crossed off another location he had finished looking at and started to become angry. Hiccup puts his pencil in his book, snaps the book shut, and places it in his vest pocket.
Finally giving up, he decided to just head back to Berk and give up on this quest.
"Ooh, the Gods hate me," He groaned miserably, kicking the dirt as he made his way home. "Some people lose their knife or their mug, but no, not me. I manage to lose an entire dragon?!" He let out an irritated yell as he pushed a low-hanging branch out of his way. Only problem: it came back and smacked him in the face. "OW!"
Hiccup rubbed his eye and glared at the stupid branch. The tree Hiccup was standing next to looked like it had been split down the middle, with bits of bark sticking out everywhere. He looked down at the other half just hanging there and saw what looked like a long trench leading down and over a small hill. He started to skid down the hill and follow the trail to see where it led.
He looked over a small ledge where he saw something that caused him to gasp as he suddenly ducked his head back behind the hill. He swallowed as he slowly lifted his head, trying to sneak another peek at the thing that was in front of him. He sat up straight and stared right at the thing in front of him. Big, white, and shielded by wings.
Hiccup fumbled around in his vest before producing his very small dagger. It was the only weapon his dad would let him use because he thought he would kill himself with anything else. The thing appeared to be unconscious, or maybe even dead.
"Wow, I…I did it?" Hiccup smiled as he approached the creature. "Ooh, I did it! This fixes everything! Yes!" He then raised his foot to place it on the dragon. "I have brought down this mighty beast-"
Suddenly the dragon pushed him off its leg and moaned. Hiccup gasped as he stepped back, standing against the rock. He held his dagger. He walked around, trying to get a good look at the dragons' faces, and that's when he saw it. A pair of large, stunning blue eyes, their slit pupils staring back into his own. Hiccup stared at it for a moment, held still by fear. He took long slow breaths, regaining his ability to speak.
"I'm gonna kill you, dragon," Hiccup said in a low voice. "I'm gonna… cut out your heart and take it to my father, I'm a Viking… I'M A VIKING!"
He raised the knife as he was ready to plunge the dagger into its heart. But as he looks, he hesitates, looking at the dragon's frightened eyes. The Light Fury, while visibly scared, whimpered and looked afraid before she closed her eyes and looked away. Hiccup, unable to kill the defenseless creature, finally gives in. He dropped to his knees and sighed as he looked away.
He then looked down at his knife and at the down dragon. "I did this..."
The Light Fury didn't understand what was happening next but then she felt as if the ropes were starting to be cut on her body. She was wondering what was happening when she looked over and watched as Hiccup cut the ropes. She was a little confused by this and waited for him to cut the last of the ropes.
When she felt she could move again, she couldn't help but ponce on Hiccup, causing him to try and get away in fear. When he stumbled backward and landed against a rock, he came face to face with the Light Fury. She had eyes that were ready to kill and Hiccup closed his eyes.
But the Light Fury then froze as she ended up sniffing the boy. As Hiccup was waiting for the dragon to eventually kill him, he didn't notice that the dragon had calmed down and became curious.
"Night Fury?"
Hiccup's eyes then opened in shock and horror as he looked towards the dragon to make sure he wasn't hearing anything. He looked at the Night Fury and even looked around to make sure that there wasn't anyone else around.
The Light Fury was still looking at the boy in curiosity, due to the fact his scent was eerily similar to that of the Night Fury she met the other night. But as she crawled off of the boy, wondering if she was going to get any information out of him as to why, he only ended up getting back on his feet and running in fear. Yet now she was shocked when it seemed like the boy almost understood her. The Light Fury wondered what she was going to do now, but decided to follow the boy and see what he could do to help her locate the Night Fury.
What if he were injured? What if they took him to their giant cage?
It was late by the time Hiccup got back home, not entirely sure if what happened today actually happened. And he sneaked his way and shut the door quietly where he noticed that his dad was sitting in front of the fire. Not wanting to get into another argument, he tiptoed over to the stairs and started to crawl up on his hands and knees. He had nearly made it before...
"Hiccup," Stoick called out to them.
"Dad," Hiccup swallowed hard. He knew whatever happened out there was a sign. Not much the talking dragon, but rather the fact he couldn't kill it. "I, uh…Uhh, er have to talk to you about ."
"I need to speak with you too," Stoick admitted.
Hiccup took a deep breath, his hands forming fists. It's now or never.
"I decided I don't wanna fight dragons."
"It's time you learn to fight dragons."
Unfortunately, they spoke at the same time and neither party understood the other.
"What?" They said in unison.
"Um, you go first," Stoick offered.
"No no, you go first," Hiccup insisted, stepping down the stairs.
"Alright...You get your wish. Dragon training. You start in the morning." Stoick said.
Hiccup then panicked as that's not what he wanted. "Ooh man, I should've gone first! Cause I was just thinking, after all, we already have more than enough dragon-fighting Vikings, right? But do we have enough- I don't know…bread-making-Vikings? Or- or small home-repair-Vikings..."
"You'll need this." Stoick dropped a large ax into Hiccup's arms. The weight of it made him lose his balance and he fell against the wall.
"I-I don't wanna fight dragons…" Hiccup stammered lowly.
"Ha! C'mon, yes you do!" Stoick said with a laugh.
"Okay, let me rephrase that: Dad, I can't kill dragons!" Hiccup kept trying to get him to understand.
"But you will kill dragons," Stoick promised him.
"No, I'm very extra sure that I won't." Hiccup stated he didn't have it in him.
"It's time, son." Stoick continued as if he couldn't hear him.
"Can you not hear me?!" Hiccup asked.
"This is serious, Hiccup!" Stoick said loudly and took the axe back. "When you carry this ax, you carry all of us with you." He then dropped it in his son's hands again. "Which means you walk like us, you talk like us, you think like us. No more of…" He then gestured to Hiccup, similar to what Gobber did. "...this."
"You just gestured to all of me," Hiccup said bluntly, frowning up at him.
"Deal?" Stoick asked him.
"This conversation is feeling pretty one-sided." Hiccup commented, feeling like he doesn't have a say in any of this.
"Deal?!" Stoick asked, and Hiccup saw he truly did have any way out.
Hiccup sighed, his arms hanging by his sides due to the weight of the ax. "Deal…"
Stoick nodded, looking satisfied. Then he turned and picked up a large sack and his helmet. "Good," he looked around, putting his helmet on. "Train hard. I'll be back. Probably…"
"And I'll be here. Maybe…" Hiccup said as he watched him leave.
Just as Stoick started to leave, the Light Fury stayed invisible as she watched the evil Viking leave towards the shore. She wanted to stay and watch this young scrawny looking Viking, wanting to see if she could have him lead her to the Night Fury.
