"You made the news," Dee said, grinning.
Predictably, Ryo blushed. "If I'd known there were TV cameras around…" He trailed off, realising that was a stupid thing to say. Even if he'd known he was being caught on film, he would have done exactly the same thing. He was a cop; defending the helpless was part of his job. It was right there on his badge: To protect and to serve, which was what he'd done.
"No reason to be embarrassed, babe, you were a goddamn hero. I heard that reporter wants to interview ya."
"I know, but I don't want to be interviewed. I was just doing my job."
"You snatched that little kid practically out from under that carriage horse's feet."
"Hooves, Dee. They're called hooves, and it was nowhere near as close as the camera footage made it look. The horse was several feet away."
"And galloping flat out. It could'a mown you down. Would'a flattened the kid."
"It's just as likely it would've swerved at the last second," Ryo insisted. "I just didn't want to chance it."
The horse had spooked when a car backfired, and Ryo had reacted on instinct.
"Still a hero."
"Shut up."
