Ch. 1: Hero Time
Gwen Tennyson was, for a first, excited to get out of school as soon as she could. The reason being was that she was going to be spending the summer with maybe her most favorite family member, Grandpa Max.
The very second the bell rang, the 16 year redhead had rushed out to the front of the school where her Grandpa was to pick her up. She didn't need to head home for her things as her stuff was already on his motor home this morning.
She didn't wait long as Grandpa Max's motor home, The Rust Bucket, pulled up in front of the school. It was a creme color with some red and blue side stripes with six wheel drive (OS ver.).
She was making her way to the door, which was facing her, before it opened to reveal someone she didn't want to see.
Out came a boy her around her age. He was fairly tall and well muscled, with black hair and green? eyes. He currently wore a white black shirt, brown cargo pants, and white black shoes (OS Ben). This was Jason Todd, Grandpa Max's teenage mechanic apprentice or employee.
"Oh No", Gwen groaned at the sight of Jason.
"Good to see you to Gwen", Jason replied with a smug smirk.
Gwen and Jason gained a love-hate relationship shortly after they met. Gwen hated his jokes and behavior, while Jason loved to tease and embarrass the redhead.
"Ready to go Pumpkin?", Max Tennyson asks Gwen as he exited the Rust Bucket. he was a husky old man with White hair and dark eyes. He wore a white shirt under a red buttoned-up Hawaiian shirt with a floral design. He had grey hair and blue pants, as well as brown shoes. (OS)
"Grandpa, why is HE here?", Gwen asked with an accusing look in her eye, fighting a whine escaping her throat.
"Well I was closing down my garage and Jason had nothing to do this summer except looking for another job, so I invited him along.", Max explained, "he even helped prepare".
"Come on, Catgirl, need to get on the road now.", Jason says to Gwen, due to her shirt symbol.
Gwen has green eyes and short red hair held by a blue hairclip and wears sapphire earrings, an elbow-length blue raglan shirt with a cat logo, white capri pants, and white sneakers with dark blue stripes without socks (OG / OS).
Gwen rolls her eyes then adjusts her backpack before heading to the Rust Bucket. Jason and Max followed her onto it.
She sat at the dining table while Max and Jason sat in the Driver and Shotgun seats respectively.
"We'll be stopping at a campsite ways away first then head to Washing D.C.", Max states as the begin to drive, heading for the highway.
"You excited Kitkat?", Jason whimsically asked, looking back to the redhead.
"As much as I can be, Doofus", Gwen replies, looking from her phone for moment.
Max sighed, "This is going to be a long summer".
Later
They drive down the highway for hours on end before stopping at a campsite around dusk for the night.
The teenage duo were sitting at a picnic table as Max brought something to eat from the RV.
"Chow Time", Max says as he sets down a bowl of wiggling white wormies.
The two teens looked at it in disgust.
"And what is that", Jason asked.
"Marinated Mealworms", he replied, "Hard to find them fresh in the States. You know, they're considered a delicacy in some countries".
"And totally gross in others", Gwen continued.
"If these don't sound good, I've got some smoked sheep's tongue in the fridge", Max replies to Gwen.
"Ugh", Jason groaned. Ever since Max found him homeless during a solo road trip, Jason has been staying with Max. He has grown used to the old man's eccentric tastes in food, he learned how to cook real fast to survive with his own taste buds intact from his newest grandfather figure's cooking.
"This summer's going to be an adventure for your taste buds, pumpkin", Max says to Gwen before heading into the RV again to get the sheep's tongue.
"I only have some rice cakes and hard candy in my school bag", Gwen informs Jason, "What do you got?"
"Don't worry, most of the food in the fridge is good stuff I got instead.", Jason replies, "I'll just have to convince him to make this a vacation from cooking for him".
"Hopefully it lasts the whole summer", Gwen muttered, she loved her grandpa but the thought of wiggling worms in her throat or essentially making out with a dead sheep's tongue made her ill.
After Dinner
Jason was able to convince the old man to let Jason make something to eat, for today at least. which the trio happily ate.
Now the teens were on their respective electronics in the night air before Max came up to them with a bag of marshmallows.
"Who wants roast some marshmallows?", Max asks, "we can even tell scary stories", he tried to coerce them.
"Actually, I'm going to take a walk Gramps, you two can start without me for now", Jason says before putting his phone away.
Gwen seemed to stare after him with Max's gaze switching between the two, "I, uh, hope you two grow on each other".
With Jason
Jason sighs as he lazily walks deep into the woods, he wasn't really one for the woods but he felt the Tennyson duo needed some one on one bonding.
He then hears what sounds like a falling plane and looks up to see what looks like a meteor.
"A shooting star? or a crash landing", Jason remarks to the flying object.
The so called 'shooting star' then made a sharp turn directly for Jason
"What the?!?!", Jason exclaims, "Shit!!", before jumping away as the burning orb crashed where he once was.
Jason gets up and looks into the crater to see a moderate sized black and silvery orb, "what is this supposed to be?", he wondered aloud.
The ground seemed to shake a little as the edge gave way and Jason fell into the crater, "woah!", with him ending up standing in front of the orb. Said orb opened by splitting in half from the top, revealing a green glow.
Jason looks closer to see..., "A watch?", he pondered, "What's a watch doing in outer space?".
It looked like a large wristwatch, primarily black and grey in color, with a grey or black dial in the middle, like a watch face, which has a green hourglass shape on it. (OS/RAT vers.)
Curiosity getting the best of him, Jason reached for the watch with his left hand before it seemed to come alive on jumped onto his left wrist.
"Jesus Christ!", Jason exclaimed. He climbs out of the crater while trying to get the watch off of his wrist, shaking his arm or trying to tear it off with his right hand.
with the Tennyson duo
"Hmm, Jason's been gone awhile", Max remarked while preparing the fire for marshmellows and Gwen tapped away on her laptop, "Well, he can't get into too much trouble out here".
"Unless he became bear food", Gwen remarked from her hunched position, with Max looking at her with disapproval, "what? I can't tell jokes?"
Back with Jason
He had just got a sturdy stick under the watch and began trying to pry the damn thing off before the stick broke with a loud snap, the bits under the watch shooting out, resulting in Jason grumbling in dissatisfaction.
He then sat down and began to inspect the space watch, accidently pushing the green button below the face plate. The caused said face plate to pop a couple of inches up from the rest of the watch. The green hourglass on it shifting to a four-sided diamond with a beep and whine, showing a silhouette of some humanoid shape.
"Hmm", he sounded with a raised eyebrow before looking around for any witnesses, before his inquisitive nature caused him to push the circular plate down, releasing a fwoosh sound and a flash of green light.
Jason felt his body become more rocky and heat up before he looked to hands only to see fire.
"Aah!", he screamed and fell over.
He looked all over his body to see his was molten and covered in a dark red cracked rock-like substance save for his hands and feet, hands having four fingers and his feet being two toed. His head was like a bonfire with a rocky face. (UAF)
"Check it out. I'm totally hot.", Jason joked to himself with a little laugh.
He then looks around at the some of the nearby trees.
"Alright, here it goes", he says to himself before pointing with his index finger at a branch and launched a baseball size fireball at it, blowing the branch off the tree along with a portion of said tree.
"That is some sweet firepower", he said while looking at his hands before an idea came and and he formed a bigger fireball between both hands and threw it at another tree, destroying it and some trees behind it.
Jason soon realized this form's fire didn't just dissipate as the trees and grass started to burn from his fireballs and him standing in a grassy area.
"Uh, Oh", Jason muttered before he tried to stop the flames, "Shit, Shit, Shit", as he tried stomping out the flames but his fire foot wouldn't allow that, "Oh Come On!".
Back with the Tennysons
Max is crouching down as he had got the campfire going now.
"What's that?" Gwen asked as she walked up to her grandfather while looking into the distance
Max stands to see what she sees, dark smoke and a bright light coming from deep within the woods that didn't look like another campfire, "Looks like the start of a forest fire. We better let the ranger station know. It was probably some damn fool messing around out there".
"Isn't Jason still out there?", Gwen questions Max.
They look to each other before Max grabs 2 fire extinguishers he had in his fire kit for campsite fires, "Better take this", he says as he hands one to Gwen and they rush into the woods to find Jason.
Back with Jason again
"Damn it", Jason groaned as the fire began to spread further and trees began to fall to cinders
Gwen neared him, both unaware of each other as they tried to stop the fires around them before she bumped into the firestarter and spraying the hothead by accident.
"AAH!", Jason exclaims as the extinguisher foam surprised him, looking to Gwen after recovering.
"AAH!!", Gwen screamed in turn at seeing a literal Fireman.
"Easy now...", Jason started before Gwen whacked him full force with the fire extinguisher and somehow sent him flying.
Gwen then uses the extinguishing foam on him again causing hi to cough as it put out his head fire, revealing his normalish neck and head were covered in the same dark-red cracked rock as the rest of his body.
"I don't what you are but you'll stay down if you know what's good for you", Gwen threatens with the extinguisher still aimed at him as his head fire came back to what it once was.
"Don't even think about, Kitkat", he says while pointing at her.
Gwen's eyes widen in realization at the nickname, "Jason? Is that you? What happened to you?"
"Well, during my walk, a meteor crashed right in front of me, only it was really a space device that had this watch that jumped up onto my wrist, I tried to take it off and pushed some buttons on it, suddenly I was on fire and then the forest was on fire." He quickly explained to her.
Max then came running into the area due to the screams, "Gwen! Are you alr-", he then sees the walking campfire, "What in blazes?"
"Hey Grandpa", Gwen greeted, "Guess who", she continued while pointing to Jason.
"It's me, Gramps", Jason informed.
"Jason? What happened?", Max asked him.
"Uh, can we save it for later", he says while gesturing to the fires around them.
"Well, what do we do?", Gwen asked aloud.
"Backfire?", "Backfire", Jason and Max say respectively, though the elder was more sure about it.
"Jason needs to start a new fire and it will burn into the old one", Max informs the teens.
"And they snuff each other out", Jason remarks.
The tennysons run back to camp to inform the ranger while Jason runs out of the flames and starts the counter fires.
A little later, a park ranger arrives on the scene to see burnt trees and the fires gone.
At the Campsite once again
"So this watch just jumped up and clamped onto your wrist?" Max inquired as he listened to Jason story.
"Yup, didn't touch the thing till it was on me like a tick", Jason replies, cooking a marshmallow that Gwen tossed him in his hand before eating it, "The symbol on my chest is the same on the watch, though a different color", the hourglass on the circle on his chest was white in color instead of the green on the watch.
"Think he's going to stay a monster forever?", Gwen jokingly asked her grandpa.
"He's not a monster. He's an alien.", Max says with a stone cold look. The teens looks caused him to stumble with his words, "I--I mean, what else could he be?".
"It did come space" Jason flippantly said, "I don't be this forever though, eating burnt food and starting fires, and i don't even think I have a dick now", his tone becoming depressed.
Gwen to the ending of that while Max said, "Don't worry Jason. We'll figure this thing out".
Just then, a high pitch beeping that that lowered in pitch each beep came from the symbol, the white hourglass flashing a red light with each beep before it did low flatline and Jason was surrounded in a red light.
Gwen and Max shielded their eyes due to the right red flash. When the red light went away, the Tennyson duo looked back to Jason to see he was normal once more, though he with the new alien device on his left wrist.
"Sweet, I'm back", Jason remarks at seeing his human self again. He looked to he watch to see that it was still on tight, "still won't come off"
"Best not fool around with it anymore until we know what we're dealing with.", Max states before standing up, "I'll go check the crash site to see if I can find anything about it, you two stay here until I get back".
"Sure grandpa", "If you say so", Gwen and Jason say respectively, though Jason was hesitant to let him go alone but figured he want him safe with Gwen.
Not long after Max left, Jason is hiding behind the RV to inspect the watch, wanting to find out what it does.
"Caught ya!", she shouts as she quickly rounds the RV to try and scare Jason, only to pout in disappointment. He just looks to her with a deadpan expression. He trained with Batman, he knew she was coming to him.
"Nice try", he remarks before looking back to the watch, turning the dial on the faceplate.
"Grandpa said to mess with that thing", Gwen tried to nag / annoy him due to her failure to scare.
"Yeah? Your point?", he replied, still fiddling with the watch.
"Were you dropped on your head as a baby?", she asked incredulously at his blatant disregard to her grandfather's orders.
"No, but I was a drug baby", Jason nonchalantly replies.
Gwen falls silent, not really sure where to go after that.
Jason looks to her, "Come on, you can't tell me you aren't a little bit curious at what else this thing does?"
"Not in the least", she lied while crossing her arms and looking away from him. Which just made it obvious to Jason.
At the crash site
Grandpa Max had arrived just a few seconds ago to find the metal orb blown to bits. Inspecting the remains, "I don't like this one little bit", he says to himself aloud.
Back with the teens
"Look Gwen, as far as I know it is forever stuck on my arm, maybe i can use it to help others or something once I figure it out", Jason explains.
Gwen mulled it over as she was roasting marshmallows while he continued messing with the watch. "So, what did it feel like to go all alien like that?", she asked him.
"Freaky at first", Jason answered, "it was like I was me, but it was also like I was someone else". Jason then pushed the big green button again and the faceplate went up like last time, "Got it. Should I do it again?"
"I wouldn't", Gwen states.
"Course you wouldn't", Jason remarked, as he turned the dial, seeing other alien silhouettes before pushing down on a four-legged looking one and a bright green flash.
Jason was now some kind of ape-dog, missing his eyes, nose, and ears. He had giant fangs that stick out of his black lipped mouth. he was covered in orange spinal frill/quill things all over his body, it's not fur, and he had three gills on each side of his neck that connected over his throat. He wore a green collar that had a horizontal white stripe in the middle and the circled-hourglass symbol in the center of it. "RAWR!", he also couldn't speak. (Omniverse)
"Ew! This thing's ugly", Gwen remarked, "Looks like there's even a flea collar on this mutt. And no eyes? What good is this one? it can't even see", see wave a hand in front of his face.
She suddenly gets an idea as a smile spreads across her face as she carefully walks around behind him with her marshmallow stick. She winds up with it to whack him however Jason was able to kind of see her in a 3D mapping sort of way using his smelling and hearing via his quills and gills. He jumps away as she swings causing her to fall over with a grunt and groan as he landed on the RV, smiling a little in this form.
"Okay, so maybe it's not a total loser.", Gwen says to Jason before he front flips down in front of her, "Ew, two words: Breath Mints". This causes Jason to turn around and kick up dirt at her with his hind legs like most dogs do.
He then began to jump away into the woods again, wanting to know what else this form can do.
"Jason, get back here!", Gwen called out as he continued to leave, "I'm going to tell grandpa you turned into some freaky animal monster thing and went swinging around the forest when he told you not to", she seemed to deflate at that, "Oh, this is a majorly weird day".
Jason is jumping and swinging from tree to tree till he sensed something, dodging a laser that destroyed the tree he was on. The laser came from a black and burnt-orange drone of some kind with grey robo limbs and red lenses.
The chase went on minute before the drone lost sight of Jason. It scanned the area for him, unable to find him before he jumped at the drone with a roar. He landed on it, the drone still in the air and trying to blast him again but wasn't flexible enough. Jason then bit the laser cannon off. The drone crashed them into some trees before Jason ripped it's head off.
Just then the circled-hourglass was beeping and flashing red again. Jason jumped off the now out of control drone as it neared a small cliff-side. The drone ramming into it and exploding as Jason changed back to normal.
He looked at it's remains, feeling good about destroying it, before an identical drone appeared before him from another part of the forest.
It prepared to fire while Jason says, "Shit", at seeing it.
Suddenly, Gwen appears with a shovel and whacks the drone down to the ground, "Back off, sparky", before wailing on it with 3 more hits and it wasn't functioning.
"Nice one", Jason complimented.
"Thanks", she replied, before the drone she attacked began to spark and caught fire. The duo ran back to the campsite before the drone blew up.
Later, In the RV
"I was worried that you might get popular with that thing on your wrist", Max says down to Jason as he sits at the table with Gwen, "That's why I asked you not to fool around with it till we know what the hell it is".
"And I'm sorry about that", Jason says to him before presenting the watch, "But I was able to figure out how it works. First you push this button here. Then this turn dial pops up and you twist it to pick what form want to be. Push it down and you transform into one of ten aliens. Though their seems to be a set time limit since I nearly turned back to normal in the middle of the drones fight."
Max put a hand to his chin as he completed what was learned, "With a device as powerful as that watch clamped on you, my guess is we'd better help you learn more fast".
"Mayday! Mayday!", a voice sounded out from Max's emergency radio comm, "Somebody help us! We're under attack by some sort of robot. I'm not joking!".
The three looked to each other before Jason spoke, "that could be connected to the drones that attacked me. Must be looking for the watch, they're in trouble because of me"
"Then we better go help them", Max states.
"But what are we gonna do?", Gwen questions the male duo.
Jason looked to the watch and then her with a smile.
The trio are then running through the woods to the more grouped up campers.
Jason activates the watch and begins cycling through the forms, "Eenie meenie minie moe -- here it goes", he says as he pushes down on the silhouette that had to spikes by its head.
A green flash and Jason became a being of pale green crystals with two long spikes, and two smaller spikes below them, on his back. His body wasn't round in any way but angular instead with green/yellow jeweled eyes. He wore a sleeveless bodysuit with a green and black top and white bottoms and black boots with green soles. The circled-hourglass is on the center of his chest. (5YL)
"So what can this guy do?", Gwen asked him.
"I don't know", he replied while inspect his new self, "but I bet it's gonna be cool".
The Campground
Fires and explosions happened as civilians ran. A laser blasting into another motorhome and blew it up.
The trio arrived to the scene to see a massive three legged robot with two bulky arms and red buggy eyes that was the same colors as the drones.
"Looks like the papa robot this time.", Jason states, "I'll get gearhead's attention, you two get the campers to safety."
Max nods at takes gwen with him as they run for the campers. While Jason goes to confront the enemy.
The robot grabs onto the park ranger that was trying to help someone before Jason appears.
"You want somebody to pick on?", he calls out to the machine, "Try me." It looks to him and scans his form, noticing the symbol on his chest and targeting him. It dropped the ranger, who landed relatively safely, and blast Jason.
He crashed into a motorhome that was soon blown up by another laser. The robot then made it's way over to him as Jason cut his way out of the wreckage, his arm forming a jagged crystalline blade. Jason looked at it and then made spikes form from it it, "Cool", he noted.
He looked to the approaching robot before charging at it with his makeshift weapon. It jumped high into the air to dodge his attack before launching itself onto him. Jason didn't feel it but was having trouble getting out from under it.
Gwen and Max were helping the ranger off his jeep that he landed on before going to help the campers while the ranger looked to the fight in bewilderment. The robot had gotten off of Jason to then grab him and throw him at the ranger. The ranger yelled as he dived away, with the crystal alien crashing into the Ranger Jeep. The park ranger wasted no more time and ran away from the combating duo as Jason got back up.
Gwen looked to Jason as she directed people away from him while he dodged another laser blast. He continued to so as more blasts were shot at him before he noticed that a tree hit by a stray shot was going to land on Gwen. He ran to be between her and the tree, forming a giant spike from his back that split the toppling free in two while Gwen just looked at him with wide-eyes
"Even?", he asks her, referring to when she attacked the drone for him.
"Even", she confirms with a nod.
The giant-bot grabbed him from behind, "Uh-oh", as he was lifted. It grabbed hold of his arm to tear it off but Jason formed spikes that destroyed its left hand. The hand holding him then blasted him into the public restrooms, blowing them up.
Max helped Gwen out from within the tree's center before they looked to the robot approaching Jason, "Jason!", Max called out.
Jason got out from the rubble as the Robot arrived. It aimed its hand for another blast while Jason formed his hands into blades and rushed it. The laser fired and Jason shielded himself with his arms, still not feeling it. The laser was redirected into several beams as the refracted and reflected off him, nearly hitting Gwen, Max, and the citizens. Jason noticed this as he was thrown back, getting an idea as the robot approached him again.
"Come on. Fire right here!", Jason calls out to the bot while pointing to his chest. To which the robot will oblige
"Get out of there! Run!", Max calls out to him before the robot fires at him again.
Jason catches it in his hands as the campers look to the spectacle. "What goes around, comes around", he one-lines as he shifts his hands into a concave mirror, redirecting the attack back to the bot and sliced it in half before it blew up.
"All Right!", the Tennysons cheered with fists raised. "Way to go, Ja--", Max continued before noticing his fellow campers, "Uh, Diamond-headed guy!", he finished.
"Diamond Head uh", Jason muttered before loudly saying, "Well, I think my work here is done", and then running away into the woods. Max and Gwen quietly left while the other campers wondered who that guy was.
In Space, Near Earth
A damaged ship with drones similar to those that chased Jason fixing it. The ship had a design similar to the robots. Inside the ship, within a healing tube was a heavily damage being with greenish skin, red eyes and a tentacled face. They had a breathing apparatus with tubes surrounding him as lit bots crawled over his body to fix him.
"Failure? Unbelievable!", he rasps out, "The puny earth being that is keeping the Omnitrix from me will soon hang on my trophy wall"
The Campsite in the Morning
Max and Gwen were packing up the gear from last night as they prepared to continue their trip.
"Where's Jason?", Max asks, looking around for the teen boy.
"I haven't seen him since breakfast", Gwen answers.
Max hears a speeding sound coming from behind him and looks into that direction to see a dust cloud approaching them. It scids to a stop right before Max and he gets a look at the alien.
He resembles a semi-armored Velociraptor. He has black orbs on his feet and three big black laws acting as hands. he wore a short-sleeved black bodysuit with a green pecs and abs and green white lines all over, his tail was also covered with five white stripes. He's wearing a black cone-like helmet with a sliding protective visor with a blue x-like shape. His visor lifts to show a blue face with green eyes, black lips, and stripes running under and over his eyes. (OV / 5YL)
"Jason?", Max inquired
"Yup", he confirmed, "hey, check this out." He then rapidly cleaned up the gear and put them inside the RV, leaving the campsite the same as when they arrived last night with in ten seconds.
"Pretty fast, huh", he stops and says to the Tennyson dup before the beeping signaled the forms end and he changed back.
"I think this will be a great summer.", he commented.
"Absolutely", Max agrees.
"It's definitely going to be interesting", Gwen says resigned to her fate, "So, where'd you go anyways?".
"Just checking on something before our vacation really got going.", he replied.
In Gotham
A grave of a woman, that looked like it was never visited by others, now had new beautiful flowers placed on her gravestone. The name on the stone was Catherine Todd, the mother of Jason Todd.
Chapter End
AN: Yes, Ben doesn't exist here and Jason replaces him as the omnitrix user. The cast is older as well because Jason doesn't die and seperate from Batman until he's about 15 years old, so I ad ehim 16 going on 17. According to the Young Justice timeline, this summer's first half will take place during the end of YJ season 2, but Jason and the Tennysons will have no part in it, so those events will still be the same.
Most of the aliens will have the same appearance that I chose for them for the whole story, excluding changes due to maturity, like Wildmutt gaining a tail or Swampfire's blooming.
