Demon's Daughter: Love Across the Divide
Chapter 9
Paradise Above
~Recap~
Via nodded. Chanting the spell with her arm out in front of her and hand glowing blue. Within seconds, I could feel a strong force of wind pulling me backwards. I tried to fight it, but it swept me off my feet and took me away. The last thing I saw was Via and her bedroom before I was embraced by a bright blue light.
~Gwen's POV~
I recall a story my mother once read to me and Charlie as children before bedtime. It was about a girl named Alice who had followed a white rabbit to a place called Wonderland. A land that defined the laws of physics and imagination. Where cats smiled and disappeared, and mad hatters threw crazy tea parties with a hare and a mouse, and a queen of living cards with an unimaginable temper. It was one of the silliest stories I ever heard, but I loved it. My favorite part was how Alice was falling down to Wonderland. Mom showed us the picture of Alice falling and all these objects around her that were either falling or floating. I wasn't entirely sure which one it was.
Why am I talking about Alice in Wonderland? Simple, the way the force of the teleporters pull had on me, I felt just like Alice at that moment. Falling down a rabbit hole with no idea when I would reach the bottom. Octavia had warned me of a speedy ride through the portal. Only I wasn't expecting this kind of ride. Luckily, just like Alice, I had reached the end of the rabbit hole. The only problem was the landing impact. The vacuum suction force of the portal pulled me headfirst. I landed hard on my head and back. Via told me to brace for impact. She didn't say how I should do that when I get pulled in headfirst. I know she didn't plan on letting that happen. It just happened. Can't change what's already happened. All I can do is take a moment to get my thoughts together then stand up to see where I landed.
Slowly, I moved my body into a sitting position. Giving my head a good rub down before shaking it side-to-side. Shake the pain away my dad used to say when I was a child. Whenever I got an injury, my dad would do this silly dance to cheer me up. He would show me his shaky dance as he called it. It involved wiggling and bouncing and shaking his hands and legs like a puppet on string. Followed by his signature duck waddle tail wiggle. Watching him do that always made me laugh and forget about the pain inflected on my body. Hate to say it, but those were some good memories. As ridiculous as they may seem, I loved watching my dad do his shaky dance with the ducktail wiggle at the end. That man could do a great ducktail wiggle. (sigh) Those days were so simple. Being a child was easy. Never having a care or a worry in the world over anything. Everything was peaceful. Where did those days go?
Giving my head another good shake I finally took the time to look around at my surroundings. A bright light blinded me. Making me cover my eyes to prevent blindness. My eyes had to adjust to the new light source before I could explore. Moving my hand from my face I could make out a bright clear blue sky above me. Something I had only seen in books, but never thought I'd experience in real life. My hand slowly came down to my lap as I stared at the sky in bewilderment. It was the bluest sky I had ever seen in my life. A pure light blue that was smooth as glass. If I had the ability to touch it, I'd bet it would feel just like that. As beautiful as the sky was, I didn't want to waste time looking at it the whole hour I would be here. It was time to get up and take a look around.
I pushed myself up on my feet. My hands touching the soft grass underneath me as I lifted myself up. Yeah, grass isn't such a big fuss as a blue sky is. There's grass in Hell that's a brownish red in some areas but it can also be green. Unlike the sky that's always red. It's not that I hate the color, I just wished to see it another color once in a while; although, I'll bet a midnight blue would have looked great as a sky color. Another time, another place. I've got more important things to think about. Time to find out where exactly Via teleported me.
Up on my feet, I looked around at the scenery. Witnessing plenty of green plant life and outdoor furniture like picnic tables, trach cans, bushes, a long metal fence, and people. Wait people, there are people in the area. I took a few steps forward to get a better look. In an opening space where there were picnic tables spread out by one of the picnic tables was a group of teenagers. Standing and sitting on the picnic table. Just talking and laughing at whatever the conversation was about. As I observed them, I couldn't help but form a small smile. These were regular human teenagers who didn't have a care in the world. Completely normal, free from their everyday responsibilities to enjoy their lives as teenagers should. They didn't have to deal with the responsibilities of being a royal or listen to their father talk shit about their sister behind her back. Shaking my head, I had to snap out of my thoughts.
Thinking about my father again. Don't know why he's on my mind when I'm mad at him. Won't even return his phone calls. Why should I when he won't even call Charlie. Either he changes his ways or I'm going to continue to ignore him. Heck why am I bothering to think about him, when I could be socializing with those teens. My heart raced with adrenalin. I could hardly breath. Besides Octavia and the gang at Charlie's hotel, I didn't have many friends around my age. If I only had an hour to socialize, I had to make the most out of it. Before I went over, I pulled out a compact mirror to check my appearance. I already looked like a human. Only thing that has to change are my eyes. I have my mother's purple eyes, with a hint of red in the pupils. Can't do as much magic as my dad can, but I can do small things like change my eyes from demonic to grey. Blinking a few times my eyes appeared normal in the mirror.
Taking a deep breath, I steadied my heart before stepping up to the plate and approaching the teens. At first, nobody saw me. They were caught up in their conversations and all attention was on one another. It wasn't until I got closer than one boy spotted me. He was a short looking kid with brown hair, a goofy smile, and a yellow shirt with a few stripes on it. He waved at me which made his friends look in my direction. Now that I was closer to the group, I counted over ten people around the picnic table. Each person had a unique style and smile. They looked to me like a good group of people to meet. That and they're the only people around in the area. If I were to walk somewhere else, it would take too much time and time wasn't something I had a lot of. It was better to stay where I was and talk with the group in front of me then go somewhere else.
When I got two feet from the picnic table, I was greeted by a large guy with blonde hair and a leaf on his shirt. His personality was energetic as he took my hand and shook it like he was high on sugar. He shook it so much I thought I was going to lose my arm.
"Hi there, I'm Owen! It's nice to meet you. What's your name? Where are you from? Do you want to be friends? Do you like muffins?" He certainly had a lot to say.
"Uh hi, my name's Gwen Morningstar. I'm from... uh... (I needed to come up with a location to where I lived. Saying I was from Hell would make me a laughingstock, or crazy looking.) I'm from... Nevada!" Don't know why I said that. Just recalled reading about that place in a book and how it's a desert region with a large city similar to the Vee's area.
"Sweet, you live near Vegas?" A guy with a green mohawk and piercings asked.
"Uh yeah, I'm not far from that location. I'm actually staying with my sister at her hotel." It wasn't a lie as the Hazbin Hotel wasn't far from Pentagram City, and my response got some good results from most of the group.
"Girl don't mind Duncan, the boy likes high stakes." A big girl who looked sassy stepped up. "The name's Leshawna, how are you doing girl." We shook hands in a normal fashion compared to how Owen was shaking it.
"I'm fine, thanks." I replied.
"Let me introduce you to everyone." So, began the introductions. Leshawna pointed to a person giving me their name. "That's my girl Bridgette, her man Geoff, his buddies DJ, Duncan, Trent, there's Courtney, Cody, Lindsey, Mike, Zoey, Cameron, and of course, my man, Harold."
I was greeted with waves, smiles, and hellos from everyone. They seemed like a friendly group I could hang with for the next hour. Everybody except this one girl.
A cough from the girl with long black hair who looked annoyed and pissed at Leshawna. "Uh hello, aren't you forgetting someone?"
"Oh, and that's Heather." Leshawna didn't look interested in mentioning Heather. Can't say I blame her; Heather reminds me of Charlie's ex-boyfriend based on her facial expression and attitude.
As long as she didn't get on my nerves, we'd have no problems; although, somehow, I knew that wouldn't be possible. Not that I cared to become a friend of hers. Besides, there was someone else who caught my eyes. The one Leshawna introduced as Trent. He was a tad taller than me with bright green eyes, dark hair, and a gorgeous smile on his face. I don't know why but there was something about him that drew me in like a moth to a flame. Maybe it was his eyes? Maybe it was his smile? Maybe it was how good his body looked in the outfit he wore? How is it that a human boy caught my attention? No one has ever caught my attention before.
My parents enjoyed throwing parties, and there was the occasional set up with some prince. My dad had high hopes that I'd meet someone who he thought was worthy of my hand, but it never worked. And yet, I can't take my eyes off of Trent. It wasn't until he spoke to me that I snapped out of my thoughts.
"Hey, it's nice to meet Gwen." He gave me a dazzling smile. Holding his hand out for me to shake. My cheeks begin to heat up. I put one hand on my face. Using the other to shake his hand. I feel embarrassed.
"Uh, hi." That's all I can say as I give a small smile.
"So, Gwen, what can you tell us about yourself?" Came Bridgette's voice. I could tell she was a good person. Her smile reminded me of Charlie's.
"Yeah, what are your hobbies and skills and fighting moves?" Harold showed off doing some ninja moves. Either this guy's been watching too much TV, or he's been teaching himself. Curtesy of comic books I'm guessing.
"Dweeb, quit embarrassing yourself." Said Duncan.
"There's nothing embarrassing about learning the great martial arts of the ninja." Harold defended himself. Doing more martial art moves for everyone to see.
"Well, I'm not much of a fighter. (Unless you count yelling at your father.) I prefer drawing in my sketch book then fight with my fists. I'll leave that to my sister and her friends."
"Are your sister and her friend's ninjas?" I can officially say that Harold has a ninja obsession.
"Uh no, no." I shake my head. "No, they're not ninjas. They just each have their own unique skills for fighting. That's all I'll say."
"You said your sister owns a hotel?" The one known as Courtney asked me. "What kind of hotel allows people to fight?"
"Yeah, she got some funding from our parents, and look, the fighting isn't anything she can't handle." I didn't want to go into great details about the subject.
"Again, what kind of hotel allows that sort of violence to occur? What, is she running an underground fighting ring or something?" Courteny had much to say, but it wasn't any of her business what went on at the Hazbin Hotel.
"Maybe she meant there's a gym at the hotel where one can do boxing." The red ponytailed girl named Zoey threw out. "Lots of hotels have a gym area for people to work out."
"Yeah, that's right." I quickly replied.
"Oh, my mistake. I didn't even think of that." Courtney apologized.
"Don't sweat it princess, everyone makes mistakes." Duncan told her as a way to make her feel better. I think it worked because I saw a smile come from Courtney's face.
"Anyway, regarding my last remark, what kind of hotel does your sister run? Since it's Vegas, I'm sure she's got something going on, right?" This girl wastes no time asking questions.
"Charlie created the hotel because she has a dream. A dream to... (Wait a minute. should I tell them Charlie's dreams to redeem sinners? Leaving out the sinner part. I probably could tell them the truth. Just not the whole truth.)
"To what? Make a fool of herself by opening a rundown hotel in the middle of nowhere?" Heather smirked, feeling proud of herself for being the queen bee bully that she was.
"Hey, Heather, you can't say that." The voice of reason known as DJ in the white hat spoke up. "You don't even know what her sister does at her hotel, or where the location is." Good to know there's someone willing to stick up for my sister.
"He's right Heather, Gwen's sisters probably got some retro digs at her hotel." Geoff, the laid-back boy with the cowboy hat spoke up. "So, Gwen, what can you tell us about the hotel your sister runs?"
What should I say? How should I put it in words? Saying Charlie runs a hotel to redeem sinners would sound confusing. Unless I word it in a different way. Surely there are hotels that redeem sinners somewhere in the world. If they have programs in other buildings, why not a hotel. Yet would that sound convincing. One way to find out.
"Well, Charlie's hotel is unlike other hotels." I began to explain. Being careful of what I say.
"Why is it a hotel for circus rejects?" Heather said in a mocking tone.
"Girl you better shut your mouth before I do it for you." Leshawna threatened Heather.
Okay, the last thing I need is my time being wasted by a fight. Better be ready to jump in should things get ugly. Bridgette and DJ looked ready to jump in as well. Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't want a fight to go down.
"Oh please, you couldn't shut me up if you wanted to." Heather was mocking Leshawna now. Which was getting Leshawna ticked off and ready to pounce.
I decided to jump in the middle and push them away from each other. "Quit it! There's no reason to go at each other's throats." I turned my gaze at heather. "What's your problem?"
"I haven't got a problem. I just speak my mind." Heather must have thought she was being clever with that smirk on her face. Can't say I didn't want to smack it off.
"You don't know anything about me or my family. So why don't you just shut the fuck up or I'll make you myself." I had to keep it together. If I slipped and let my inner demon show I'd be in hot water.
I eyed the group who looked surprised by my deep voice. Even Heather looked surprised when I spoke. Shaking my head and backed away from Leshawna and Heather. Taking a few deep breaths to regain control of myself. Trent came over to me looking concerned.
"Are you okay Gwen?" He placed a hand on my shoulder which was warm to the touch. Even with clothes on I could feel the warmth sink through. It felt comforting. Making me relax to the touch.
"Yeah... I'm okay, I'm okay. Sorry about that." I apologized.
"Girl, you have nothing to apologize for. That was some badass talk you gave Heather." Leshawna spoke with pride in her voice as she came up patting me on the back. "I don't know how you got your voice that deep but if it makes Heather stop in her tracks keep it up."
"I didn't know a person's voice could get that deep." The blue-eyed girl Lindsey spoke up. "Did anyone know our voices could do that?" She didn't sound too bright in my opinion.
"How did you make your voice so deep like that?" Courtney sounded curious.
I had to say something. Took me a second to come up with a quick lie/truth. "My mom's in the music and film business. She'll sometimes teach me and Charlie what she teaches her students."
That gained a lot of attention from the group. It wasn't a full lie I told. My mother actually sang down in Hell to the citizens of Pentagram City. She wanted her voice to be heard as she sang about dad's glorious dreams to make Hell a better place, or at least that's what she used to do. Mom doesn't sing as often now. At least to the public. Occasionally, I've heard her sing at home when I walk down the hallway and mom's alone in her room with the door slightly open. I'll stop near the door, lean in, and listen to her sing. She has the most beautiful voice in Hell in my opinion. Sometimes I envy her, dad, and Charlie for having pure angelic singing voices unlike myself.
"Can you sing too Gretchen?" Asked Lindsey who said my name wrong.
"It's Gwen, and I'm not much of a singer." Time to change the topic. "Hey, I didn't ask but what are you guys doing out here?"
"We come here after school to hang out before heading home." Geoff replied. "We've been doing this since Elementary school."
"You guys have all been friends for that long?" I was surprised how such a large group could be friends for so long. Then again, I was friends with Octavia since we were little. "How did all of you get together?"
Geoff gives a hearty laugh. "It's not a long story. We were all in the same class in Elementary school. We all just sort of clicked." He snapped his fingers upon saying that word. "How about you Gwen, got any friends back home?"
"I've got a few friends. My closets childhood friend is Octavia. She's like a second sister to me."
"Is she single?" Asked Cody.
"That's not important." I gave him a look that said, 'It isn't going to happen.' on it. He backed off after that. A nervous smile on his face as he held his hands up in defense. He clearly didn't want to piss me off after seeing how I talked back to Heather.
"Could you tell us a bit about Octavia?" The small boy known as Cameron spoke up.
"Sure, she's slightly taller than me by four inches. She gets her height from her dad. She's also into studying the stars, listening to music, occasionally buying taxidermy critters, and having sleepovers with me."
"She buys taxidermy?" Bridgette didn't like the sound of that. "I'm sorry, it's just being a vegetarian I love animals and the thought of taxidermy gives me unpleasant thoughts."
"Sorry, I didn't know."
"It's okay, like you said, you didn't know." The way Bridgette forgave me and smiled reminded me of Charlie.
"So why are you all the way here in Canada?" Heather sounded interested in my reasons for being here, but I think she was finding another reason to act bitchy.
Wait a second, did she say I'm in Canada? Octavia teleported me up North to Canada? Wow, she has grown stronger in learning to control her powers. I'll need to get her a gift as a congratulations that all her hard work paid off. That'll be later. Right now, I've got to come up with a good lie for my reasons being here. Took me a few short seconds but an idea clicked in my head.
""My father has business to attend to up here." Simple as that.
"What kind of business?" Heather had a sly smirk on her face.
"Come on Heather, Gwen's private life is none of your business." Zoey chimed in.
"Yeah, why do you even care? No wait, you're just trying to find a way to get back at her for how she talked to you." Leshawna got up in Heather's face. "Girl, you better keep your goddamn mouth shut if you know what's good for you."
"Don't tell me what to do Leshawna. I can do whatever I want when I want." Heather got up in Leshawna's face.
If looks could kill, they would both drop dead. Instead of getting in the middle of the two of them again, I took a different approach to the situation.
"If you must know, my fathers in the rubber duck business."
Thinking about it, it sounded slightly better in my head then it does a loud. Especially if one could see the looks, I'm getting from the group. Nothing horrible, more like curiosity and surprise. Heather broke out in laughter. I wasn't sure if she found this amusing or if she was mocking me. If I had to guess, she's mocking me. Not surprising, but not important.
"Your dad makes rubber ducks?" Asked Trent.
"Yeah, he loves ducks. He's been making ducks since I was a kid. He got the idea to manufacture rubber ducks all across the globe and things just kind of kicked off from there." I explained the best I could keeping things under wrap with my lying.
Not that what I said wasn't true. My father has been obsessed with making rubber ducks for as long as I can remember. Maybe even longer. I don't know how his obsession for ducks began, but I doubt it'll ever end.
"That's actually kind of cool." Trent spoke snapping me out of my thoughts. "Your dad makes people happy with rubber ducks. He gets to be as creative as he wants. Sometimes I wish my dad had a more fun job. Instead, he's an accountant and he is trying to get me to be one to. But that's not what I want to do. What I want, is to express myself through music."
Father issues. I know that all too well. I'm glad I'm not the only one with problems, but I do feel awful for Trent. His dad wants him to become someone he's not. All my dad wants is for me to listen to him. With the occasional back talk about Charlie. Not that anyone needs to know about that. It's not something I want to discuss aloud. Trent needs moral support right now. I place a hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
"Look, I'm not going to tell you what you should do. I'm only going to give you, my opinion." I told him. "Trent, if your dad can't accept you for who you are then that's his problem. You shouldn't do anything that doesn't please you. It's your life. Your dreams. The only one who can stop you is yourself. Keep that in mind." I backed off because I wanted to give Trent some personal space, but surprisingly, he grabbed my hand in a gentle embrace.
Our eyes meet. His looked soft while looking at me. With a hint of calmness and dare I say, happiness in them. Maybe what I said was just the thing he had to hear. A sort of pick-me-up. His dad probably put him down one too many times and he was losing the motivation to carry on with living his dream. There was no telling if that was true or not. Trent moved my hand down and just held it. His hand was warm and soft as he held my own. My cheeks began to flare up. My face was probably warmer than my hand was at the moment. How is it that I'm feeling this sort of affection? Should it matter if I was developing feelings for a human? There's no law in Hell that says otherwise.
"Hey, um, I just want to say thanks for the words of encouragement. Guess I just really needed to hear that to remind me that my dad can't stop me from doing what I want." When he spoke, it sounded as smooth as honey.
Gah! Damn it, I'm thinking like Charlie again. What the fuck?! Whoa! Okay, I know I'm just thinking in my head, but did I actually use the word fuck? Stupid question. Maybe I've been hanging around Husker and Angel too much.
"Are you, okay?" Trent's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I apologized saying I was lost in thought. Trent didn't mind. He just smiled at me. This earned us whistles and howlers from the guys behind us. Followed by head smacks from Leshawna to shut them up.
"You boys need to learn to keep your mouths shut." She wanted to make sure her point was clear when she spoke.
Watching Leshawna's behavior unfold in person was kind of funny. Couldn't help letting out a small giggle. This confirming I've been hanging around my sister a tad too much. Just then, the sound of an alarm went off. It took me a moment to realize the alarm was coming from my phone. Pulling out my phone, the alarm I set to remind me my hour was up went off. That meant I had five minutes to find a secluded area before Octavia opened the portal.
"Shit, I have to go." I said a loud. Pulling my hand back, out of Trent's hold.
"Is everything alright?" Trent sounded concerned and surprised by my sudden reaction.
"What's the hurry? Late for the dork parade?" Heather taunted me, but I ignored her. Making up a quick lie.
"I have to get back home. I promised my sister I'd help her with some work for the hotel. I got to bounce. Nice meeting you guys!" I began to run away from the group. Running in the opposite direction from which I arrived. I could hear someone shout at me. I think it was Trent.
"We're here every day at three! Come back when you can!"
I smiled softly, shouting out an okay in reply. Picking up the pace, I hurried off checking my phone. I had four to three minutes to find a secluded area. Didn't know how Octavia was going to bring me back, but I trusted her. With any luck, her dad hasn't been the wiser and discovered what we've been doing. Quickly, I searched for a spot I could hide in or behind. As if Lady Luck was watching over me, I located an open alleyway with dumpsters and nobody around. Running over, stopping against the wall to catch my breath, I checked my phone again. There was less than a minute before my ride appeared. Phew, made it without being spotted.
Leaning against the wall, I took a couple deep nose breaths to help steady my heart that was pounding. As if I had taken adrenaline pills or ate too many sweets. Giving my heart an electrifying major sugar rush. Shaking my head, letting out another groan. Damn you Charlie, why must you be sweeter than cream. Rubbing off of me with this good vibration aura you have around you. Letting out a soft sigh, my attention was drawn to the sound of something next to me. The sound grew, a bright light shuns bright enough almost blinding me, and there I see a large portal opening right before my eyes. Octavia, you're the greatest. My guess is I just jump in to get back. Without wasting any time, I jumped right into the portal. Feeling that similar sucking force pulling me forward.
Unbeknownst to me, someone had been watching from the shadows.
Done!
