Chapter Nine: Racing Against the Flames
After Fuli and Ono successfully led the gazelles to safety, they regrouped with the rest of the Lion Guard, who had been hard at work containing the fires.
Bunga: "Phew. Finally." He wiped his forehead dramatically.
Kion: "That takes care of the fires." He surveyed the scorched ground, nodding with relief.
Before they could catch their breath, Makini came sprinting toward them, waving her arms frantically.
Makini: "Lion Guard! Lion Guard!" She came rushing toward them, her breathing uneven, eyes wide with urgency.
Kion: "What is it, Makini?" He turned to her with concern.
Fuli smirked slightly.
Fuli: "Do you need help trying to find Bongo?" She teased, already knowing how her best friend loved to play hide and seek.
Makini: "No! They're stuck in a log!" She shook her head, panting.
Bunga: "A log? How'd they get stuck in a log?" He blinked.
Ono: "Well, my guess is that the log they were hiding in wasn't big enough to fit three baby baboons." He adjusted his wings, his sharp mind already piecing it together.
Fuli: "Of course." She chuckled, shaking her head with a small, knowing smile.
Kion: "Ono, do you think you can find that log?" His focus sharpened.
Ono: "Affirmative." He immediately took to the sky, scanning the terrain with his keen sight.
He zeroed in on the log Makini had described—but what he saw made his heart drop.
Ono: "Hapana!" He gasped. "You guys, the log they're in is on fire!" He swooped down, his voice carried with urgency.
Fuli: "What?!" Her eyes widened in horror.
Bunga: "Zuka Zama!" His usual carefree demeanor vanished.
Beshte: "Oh no!" His face twisted with worry.
Fuli's body tensed as fear clawed at her chest.
Fuli: "And Bongo and his siblings are trapped inside." Her ears flattened, her tail flicking anxiously.
Kion: "Lion Guard, let's go save our friends!" His expression hardened with determination.
Makini: "Follow me!" She spun around.
Kion: "Till the Pride Lands' end…" He roared the battle cry.
Bunga, Fuli, Ono, and Beshte: "Lion Guard defend!" They shouted back in unison.
With that, they charged forward, Makini leading the way toward the burning log. As they ran, Fuli's heart pounded in her chest. She could barely hear anything but the rushing wind in her ears.
Fuli: "Don't worry, Bongo. I'm coming." She murmured under her breath.
Kion, running beside her, glanced at her briefly before looking ahead.
Kion: "Let's just hope they can hold on a little longer." He spoke, his voice filled with determination.
Fuli gave a firm nod, but deep down, she was praying they weren't too late.
