"Before starting our meeting, I think proper presentations are in order" says the red Satan as Elizabeth takes her place around the table. "I am the current Lucifer and head of internal affairs, Sirzechs Lucifer and here are my fellow satans, Ajuka Beelzebub, Falbium Asmodeus and Serafall Leviathan. We thank you for agreeing to meet us" by saying this Sirzechs formally starts the meeting.
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Elizabeth a ruler of power" replies the attendant smiling at the satans. "I must say that when Lucifer mentioned what happened in this town the other day I was quite intrigued by it. You mentioned to be from another world, right?" asks Ajuka, hands holding his chin in thought.
"Yes, I did" answers Elizabeth. "Both me and Makoto are from the same world as Nyarlathotep, the same one who caused the incident you just talked about" the mention of Nyarlathotep confuses the four satans. "Who exactly is Nyarlathotep?" asks Sirzechs. "Nyarlathotep is the embodiment of mankind's collective evil. Their desire for destruction and chaos. He himself is a shadow, the being who Makoto fought. While that one was a single person's shadow, Nyarlathotep is the shadow of all humans".
Elizabeth proceeds to explain the four satans everything about shadows, the Collective Unconscious and the Sea of Souls.
"What can we do then?" for the first time in the whole meeting the voice of Falbium, the satan of military affairs, is heard. "Nyarlathotep can't rely solely on shadows as of now, so he might manipulate someone to do the dirty work for him" explains Elizabeth.
After minutes of silent thought Ajuka raises his hand, his eyes illuminating after what Elizabeth said. "I have a theory" says the ex-Astaroth. "During the last weeks the Old Satan Faction emerged from slumber once again and this time much stronger and more cunning. Many of our spies were killed, their known bases disappeared and we had reports of monster sights in the bordering areas of the Underworld" Ajuka looks at his colleagues.
"Are you implying the Old Satan Faction and Nyarlathotep are connected?" asks Serafall pondering Ajuka's theory. "It could be unrelated and only a chance, but I don't believe in coincidences" replies Ajuka confident in what he said. "Moreover Elizabeth here said that this is the modus operandi of Nyarlathotep thus supporting my theory" listening to the green-haired Satan reasonings make everyone nod in agreement.
"I have one last question" says Falbium. "How can we defeat the shadows? I'd like our soldiers to be able to defend themselves and our race" he asks looking at Elizabeth with a rare sight of concentration instead of his sleepy one. "Oh, that's quite simple, you can't. Shadows are not harmed by normal means. Only a persona can injure them" she answers. "How do we use persona then?" asks Sirzechs not seeing any problem. "The answer is the same, you can't. In our world the personas were born from the Collective Unconscious of the primordial Earth who tried to fight back Nyx's unconscious thus creating the shadows. When this world's Collective Unconscious will be ready, I'm afraid it will be too late and Nyarlathotep would already be unbeatable by then". Elizabeth's answer makes the atmosphere in the room to darken.
"So we have to rely on just you and Makoto Yuki..." says Sirzechs. "I don't see any problems in that, the sight of the other day was the first shadow we saw. It must mean that the process isn't that fast. If we find and defeat Nyarlathotep's supporters Yuki and Elizabeth will have green light to vanquish the shadows" says Ajuka.
"I agree with Ajuka" says Elizabeth. Behemot then make a step forwards earning a 'what are you doing?' glare from Grayfia. "What are we waiting for? We are going to crash the Old Satan Faction anyways after all" he says clenching his fists.
"Not this fast Behemot" admonishes Ajuka making Serafall's rook to frown. "Ajuka's right Beh, we can't rush this, we don't even know if the Old Satan Faction is our only enemy" says Serafall calming down the old man who still grunts in disapproval "If the satans say so" says the rook. When Behemot moves back Grayfia elbows him in punishment. "Sorry" he forces himself to say.
Sirzechs stands up and looks at Elizabeth. "We thank you for telling us what you knew. As Beelzebub and Leviathan said we will gather all the information we can and tell you as soon as possible what we will find. I hope you will stay in Kuoh?" asks Sirzechs. "Yes I took quite the liking to this city, and I'm sure Makoto thinks so too".
"Good" replies Sirzechs before he and the other satans followed by Grayfia and Behemot depart from the city.
04/10/2012, Kuoh Town, Evening.
Irumi Ito is having a wonderful day, she was really happy senpai Yuki was fine. When she and the other music club members asked news about him, the student council was vague, at most they just avoided the topic saying he was sick and refused to say anything else. She breathes a sigh of relief now that everything is fine. After finishing their meal Irumi and Makoto wave each others goodbye and the girl heads back home satisfied of her day.
While the self proclaimed 'vice' of the Music Club is happily strolling the streets of Kuoh returning to her home she is approached by a brown-haired woman wearing a bat suit resembling a cheap cosplay. The said woman offers Irumi a leaflet without uttering a word. "Ehm... thanks?" says confused Irumi taking the piece of red paper and looking at it eith a questioning gaze. When she looks up from the card the woman seems to have disappeared. 'Ok I guess' the girl shakes her head not giving much thought to what just happened and just shoves the leaflet in her pockets.
Irumi lives in the residential area of Kuoh, the city's most recent district, being built in the last decade to satisfy the need of houses due to the increasing population. The architects chose to build modern styled houses instead of traditional ones to modernize the growing town. Unbeknownst to the girl on the neighborhood where she and her family live a magical veil has been placed, and the girl is currently walking directly into hit.
'What is happening?' she asks herself looking around, noticing something seems out of place, but not understanding what exactly. Irumi frowns not hearing any sound coming from the usually vivid neighborhood. As she gets closer and closer to her home the feeling of unease grows with each step.
The girl slowly opens the door of her house. "Mom! I'm home!" sasy Irumi closing the door behind her. No one answers back. Irumi turns on her home's lights illuminating the seemingly empty house. However, nn heavy breath is heard, rough and animalistic from the living room. "Mom? Dad? Are you there?" asks Irumi starting to feel anxious.
When she approaches the living room's door and opens it what she sees make her scream at the top of her lungs.
A monstrous and bulky being is sitting, in an almost ironic constrast, on a soft cushion, around it the living room is devastated like a storm has passed. The table is broken in half, the ceiling covered in sword's slashes, the room's lights not working with shards of glass from the broken windows on the floor and, worst of all, the bodies of two adults, almost unrecognizable, their heads severed from their torsos. The red skinned monster, his body encased in a still bloody samurai armor, is holding the head of a woman in his right head. Admiring it like a hunt trophy with a wicked smile on it's face.
The monster has black horns, two white and sharp fangs sprouting from his jaw, white messy hair stained by blood and gore and in the center of his forehead a third black eye with no eyelids. Laying beside the figure there's a huge tetsubo made of dark metal."Yomi, take the soul of this cleansed traitors of Japan. May the dark Mother forgive them and use their souls for her revenge" growls the monster in a feral grin, his red eyes glowing. Irumi scream makes the monster look at her direction, it's grin not leaving it's face.
"Another traitor! Another sacrifice!" the monster gets up, not able to fully stand up due to his height. He bends his back staring at Irumi with the same eyes of a lion ready to strike and eat a gazelle.
Back with Makoto, while the boy was walking back from the restaurant he passed by the mall of the town and decided to take a look inside. Makoto soon finds himself looking at various shop windows surprised by the amount of different activities present in a town as small as Kuoh.
'Universe, can we buy meeeat?' screeches Fafnir with his metallic voice when the boy stops in front of a butcher shop. 'Control your stomach greedy dragon' chastises Odin, a bit of disdain for the dragon in his voice hidden behind his regal tone. 'Universe needs to eeeeat properly, old man' replies Fafnir cackling. A grunt is heard from the All-Father. 'Stop fighting' Kohryu stops the two personas from continue their verbal fight.
'Actually it's not a bad idea' thinks Makoto deciding to enter the shop wanting to cook one of the recipes Akihiko taught him when they cooked together often before a Tartarus' expedition to pass the time and ease the tension. Makoto buys some minced pig and beef meat. 'Good choiiice Universe' says Fafnir making a high-pitched sound, praising Makoto's choice.
"Yuki? Are you fine?" as Makoto exits the butcher shop, a bag in hand, he hears a familiar voice calling him. He turn his sight to see Rias walking towards him, she's also holding a bag, but full of mangas. "Hi Gremory" greets the messiah.
When Rias is in front of him she looks at the boy with a conflicted look on her face. "Listen Yuki... I'm sorry" says the red-haired girl after some seconds of pause. Makoto frowns at her. "I don't think I understand why you are apologizing" says Makoto. "I just thought we had the wrong start. Me asking you to join my peerage was really inappropriate. Especially now after what you have done to help us... I'm not like this really" says the girl bowing slightly her head in deep shame.
"Ah, it was about that? No problem. You probably had your reasons" replies Makoto making Rias sigh in relief. 'Yes he's right... if it wasn't for Riser I probably wouldn't even considered talking to him' thinks Rias ashamed by her behaviour, but determined to fix her mistakes. "I hope we can begin anew, I am Rias, just Rias" says the girl smiling a sincere and warm smile offering her hand which Makoto shakes in return.
'I am Thou. Thou art I. Thou hast established a new bond. Thou shalt have the Universe blessing when choosing to create personas of the Priestess Arcana'.
'This spoiled supposed devil is the Priestess uh?' asks annoyed Lucifer. 'She wanted to amend her errors. This is a fantastic quality!' praises Robin Hood solemnly. 'I like her too' says viciously Apollo earnings a sigh from the other personas.
"I saw you bought something, what is that?" asks Rias looking at Makoto's bag in his hand. 'I don't like her sight on myy... I meeeean our meeeat' says Fafnir in a growl resembling the sound of a furnace. Makoto shakes his head dismissing the dragon's thoughts. "I wanted to cook something so I bought the ingredients" Makoto then looks at Rias' mangas.
"You surely are a manga fan" comments the boy. Rias looks at her bag. "Yes, but the comic shop here in town doesn't have all the mangas I wanted" she whines. The two teenagers talk for a while before they start walking towards the exit. When they are about to wave each others goodbye, both Rias and Makoto have a jolt.
Rias feels herself being called. 'Mom... Dad... Please' she hears the voice of the girl she's been watching for potentially having a sacred gear. Irumi Ito. She ordered her familiar to give the girl a flyer, in case she wanted to use it for something. This, however, was completely unexpected. Irumi Ito is cryingf or help, calling her parents.
'Makoto, the bond with the Magician is in danger' says Messiah. 'What do you mean?'. 'Something is threatening her life' replies the persona.
Rias and Makoto share a look. "Thank you for everything Yuki, I'm going home" says the girl hiding her nervousness nor wanting to drag the boy into other devil affairs. The two teenagers go different ways and when Rias is sure she's not seen she answers the request of the flyer, teleporting herself.
Makoto summons the key and enters the Velvet Room. Inside there's Ryoji sitting on the counter munching some chips. "Ehy Makot-" he waves at him, but before he can say anything else the blue-haired boy makes to reach his evoker. "The Wanderer!" he pulls the trigger, but nothing happens the evoker doesn't even shoot. "Makoto what are you doing?" asks Ryoji confused by Makoto's behaviour. "Why doesn't it work?" Makoto asks himself after failing to use Mercurius' theurgy once again.
"You need to wait before being able to use your personas again. I am bound in my human form too and I'm pretty sure also the attendant is limited on what she can doo" says Ryoji offering his friend something to drink. 'Such are the consequences of being reckless and using Martyr's Doom, Universe' explains Lucifer before Makoto can ask why. "Messiah said a friend is in danger and I have to help her" Makoto reaches the door and exits the Velvet Room leaving Ryoji behind.
'Messiah, where is Ito?' asks Makoto to his truest self. Makoto then follows Messiah's instructions to reach his new Magician.
04/10/2012, Ito House, Evening.
Inside the house of the Itos, the monster is licking his lips as he gazes at his new prey. Irumi, with all her strength of heart, is able to overcome the primordial fear that was paralyzing her and tries to run away screaming for help.
The dark and deep laughters of the monster make Irumi shake in fear. "Run little traitor, run" the monster takes his weapon and smashes it in front of himself clearing his path by destroying the door of the living room.
Irumi is running away from her house when she feels an excruciating pain down on her leg, causing her to fall. She turns back seeing a common kitchen knife has been thrown at her, hitting her ankle.
She sees the monster slowly approaching her. She tries to scream, cry, but her voice doesn't come out.
She looks as the killer of her parents getting closer and closer. She prays for help. The piece of paper the woman from before gave her starts glowing of red light.
The monster stops to look at the flyer. "You think you can escape little traitor? I took care of placing a ward to avoid any cowards to escape their judgement. Die by my hands and cleanse your traitor blood. I am the judge of you humans who dared to turn your backs on Japan. You who were the blessed children of pur mighty gods, now nothing more than treacherous rats". Irumi tries to crawl away in a desperate attempt to save herself, but when she sees the monster's tetsubo striking beside her, intentionally missing Irumi. The girl cries silent tears. She is done. It's over.
'Are you giving up?' Irumi hears a deep voice in her head. 'Who are you?' she asks the voice. 'Do you wish to survive?' repeats once again the same voice. "Of course I want to live!" screams Irumi and in the same time she screams a blinding red light erupts from her right arm.
Rias is flying in the direction where the flyer was activated, her magic has been cancelled in the moment she tried to teleport herself, something is blocking her magic and it must be powerful if it can even block a magic strengthened by the gremory sigil. "Akeno" says the Gremory heiress via a communication circle to her queen. "Something in the residential area of the towm is blocking magic. Call the others and reach me".
"Yes Rias, should I tell Sona too?" asks the lightning queen. Rias takes some time before answering. "Tell her to make everyone in the area to go somewhere safe and to be ready to heal potential victims" is the answer of Akeno's king. "Ok, we are coming" says Akeno as the communication is closed. Rias lands in front of the magic veil where her peerage has already teleported.
"Have you found anything?" asks Rias. "This veil is the same as the one Sothillis placed" answers Kiba gritting his teeth at the thought of the oni who defeated him. Rias hums at her knight's anseer and after a brief inspection casts a bolt of destruction creating a gap in the veil big enough to let them pass through. "Irumi Ito is in there and asked for the help of the Gremory Clan, it's our duty to save her as she is both our client and under our protection" declares Rias as her peerage nods in unison.
The devils arrive at the scene where the monster was holding the fainted Irumi by her head. "You are more sturdy than I expected little traitor, this gauntlet here is also unexpected. Your soul will be of great use" he says grabbing her right arm where a red gauntlet with a jewel in it's center appeared. Before the monster can throw apart Irumi he's stopped by Rias' voice
"Get away from that girl oni! You are in devil territory attacking a civilian, we are allowed to use force to stop you" says Rias preparing another bolt of destruction aimed at the monster in front of her. "Here come the invaders. Vermins infesting Japan's sacred land. I will enjoy tearing your bodies apart!" roars the oni.
The monster grabs his tetsubo and rushes towards the devils like a ram. He smashes his weapon on the ground cracking the cement of the street by the amount of force he put in the strike. However the devils easily dodge the attack as Rias and Akeno strike the oni with their magic. The lightnings of the queen are blocked by the oni's armor and the bolt of destruction is dodged.
"That power! I heard about it, and your hair. You are the Gremory!" howls the oni. He ignores Kiba's slashes as every single one of them is either parried by the oni or blocked by it's armor. "President he's aiming at you!" shouts Kiba understanding the oni's intentions. Rias flies in the sky at Kiba's shout and watches the situation. "Yuuto, grab Ito and bring her safe" orders the heiress. "But-" Kiba wants to complain, but he understands the need of taking Ito away from the battlefield and he, as the fastest among them, being the best choice for this task. Kiba gulps his pride and follows Rias' order.
"Annoying fly" growls the oni as Rias takes flight. He tries to throw his weapon at her, but Koneko and Akeno don't let him take aim. The horned monster tries to kick Koneko, but the girl, having learned her lesson after the fight with Sothillis, dodges just in time to avoid the attack.
Akeno tries to correct her aim to not hit the oni's armor, but it seems her lightnings are being deflected on it, just like a lightning rod. "Don't you think I've come unprepared invaders. I know everything about barbarians like you, I know how to kill you, I know how to make you suffer, I know how to punish you for having tainted the land of Japan with your cursed presence!" hate takes over the oni acting almost like fuel as he starts to be faster than before. His movements despite his size become smoother and cleaner and he's able to reach Akeno before the girl can fly away to avoid the attack.
"Annoying brat" he roars. His claws cut Akeno, blood starts to drip from her body. "Akeno!" shouts Rias seeing her queen being injured. The red-haired shoots bolts of destruction to distance the oni from her friend. It works as rhe monster is forced to leave the bleeding Akeno in ordenrto dodge Rias' magic. "Koneko, Akeno start fliying. We can't beat him on the ground" orders Rias understanding their inferiority in a gound battle without Kiba.
"Coward invaders fighting like cowards. No honour, just cowardice and evilness for the likes of you" the oni grinds his sharp teeth looking at the devils flying over him. The fight is in stall. The oni can't reach the devils and both parties are able to dodge each others attack. Then the oni crouches down looking up at the injured Akeno, the easiest prey out of them. "Akeno get away!" shouts Rias, but before everyone can do anything the oni jumps in the air, destroying the pavement of the street. He directly hits Akeno and slams her on the ground.
Kiba just brought Irumi to the occult research club where he started a preliminar treatment of her wounds. Soon the blonde exits the clubroom to run towards the residential area. However ehile Kiba is running through Kuoh he sees Makoto who was also running.
'Messiah where is Ito?' asks the blue-haired boy to his persona. 'She is now at your school Makoto' answers the saviour. 'What?' before Makoto can inquire more he hears Kiba's voice. "Senpai!" Kiba rushes to him. "What's happening?" asks Makoto, immediately understanding something is off. "Another oni attacked the city, now the President and the others are fighting him" answers Kiba catching his breath. "Was there a girl named Irumi Ito?" asks Makoto. "Yes, I brought her away". Makoto nods at Kiba's response.
'The Magician is save. It's tiiiiime to hunt!' screeches Fafnir. 'We can't fight. And you especially wouldn't fight in a situation like this' says Odin knowing too well how the half-robotic dragon fights. 'We still have our friends to save, hee hoo' reminds Jack Frost. 'I agree with our frost companion!' declares Robin Hood. 'I agree too' calmly says Yoshitsune. 'Shut up and let the Universe think' chastises Kohryu silencing the personas.
"Where is the oni?" asks Makoto. "This way" answers the blonde. Kiba and Makoto then hurry to the residential area where the fight was taking a bad turn for the Gremory peerage. The oni just landed after his jump using Akeno to muffle his fall. "A traitor Himejima. You are even more disgusting than that Gremory. Daring to throw away the gift the mighty gods gave you and becoming a devil... disgusting" the oni spits on the unconscious body of Akeno.
Rias screams in rage as she strikes her power of destruction at the oni. Luckily for him the anger of the Gremory heiress makes her shots predictable and easy to dodge or deflect with his tetsubo. "Koneko! Take Akeno and go away!" Rias' voice is loud, full of anger and barely under control.
Koneko looks at her king. "Preside-" tries to say the half-devil. "Do as I said!" shouts Rias almost unrecognizable from the rage, a rage Koneko has never seen on her kind and caring king, a rage that frighten the nekomata. The Gremory Heiress lands on the ground and faces the oni. "You dared hurting my family!" shouts the girl, concentrated power of destruction in both her hands ready to cancel this monster from the face of Earth.
"Killing you will be the most satisfying thing I did in a while. Mother Izanami will love an offer such as you" the maniacal grin on the oni's face suddenly stops, a serious expression replacing it. The expression of a fighter who's about to accomplish his greatest deed. "I AM KAZAN ISHIKAGAWARA THE HATE BORN FROM JAPAN FOR THE INVADERS LIKE YOU DEVIL! I AM YOUR WORST NIGHTMARES MADE FLESH!". The fight between the now named Kazan Ishikagawara and Rias Gremory begins.
Rias' defensive spells are able to block the first strike from the oni's tetsubo and before he can attack again Rias throws a blow of raw destruction at Kazan who's forced to jump back to avoid damage. "If it wasn't for that annoying power of yours you and all your servants would already be dead" says the oni.
"Don't call my family servants!" shouts Rias casting another magic circle to defend herself from a strike of Kazan's tetsubo.
Another bolt of destruction is dodged and another strike of Ishikagawara's tetsubo is blocked. When the fight seems to be in a stall again the oni is able to pierce through Rias' defensive spells with his horns shattering the girl's magic shields. Rias is taken aback and tries to get away from Kazan's reach, but the oni is able to use his tetsubo on the girl slamming it on her, breaking her left wing. Rias screams in pain and the oni laughs darkly. "Now you won't be able to run away".
Koneko is holding the fainted Akeno, tears in her eyes. 'Why this again? Why am I always useless? First senpai Kiba, now the President and senpai Akeno' she cries in her mind. 'I don't want to be left alone. I don'want to be alone again' The girl exits the gap created by Rias in the magic veil. "Please senpai" sobs the girl feeling the body of Akeno becoming colder. "Please" she cries again trying to hold herself, her body not able to withstand such an emotional pain.
"Koneko! Senpai I found them!" Kiba hurries to Koneko's side after he saw the crying girl, Makoto close behind. "Koneko what happened?" asks the blonde. "T-the oni attacked her... The president is fighting him... alone" cries the short girl.
Koneko looks hopeful ar Makoto. "Senpai you can heal her right? Like Elizabeth did, no?" pleads Koneko. Makoto bits his lip. "I can't" he says with sorrow. "Why?" asks Kiba. Makoto takes out the velvet key and opens an entrance for the Velvet Room. "I'll deal with it, bring Himejima inside" he says seriously opening the Velvet Room and shoving the three devils inside.
'Universe you aren't thinking about fighting, right?' asks concerned Orpheus Telos. 'I am, I can still use my sword where's the problem?' asks Makoto as he enters the veil. 'You aren't stronger than a regular human as of now' says Lucifer, clear disagreement in his voice. 'Do I look like I care? I fought worse. I won't let anyone die on me. Never. Again' asks back the messiah. 'Universe I admire your selflessness, but our companions are right' even Robin Hood stands against Makoto's idea. 'And you plan to die again by doing so?' Tanathos, Ryoji says. 'Shut your mouth Ryoji' Makoto tells his friend. The boy ignores any other word from hi other selves. Sword of Lucifer in hand he runs where the fight is.
Inside the Velvet Room the the devils are greeted by Ryoji who has a bitter look on his face after his brief conversation with Makoto. "Ehy there" he says smiling and kneeling beside them. "Mochizuki!" shouts Kiba. "Let me help you" says Death as he grabs Akeno by her shoulder. "Can you heal her?" asks Koneko hopeful. "Unfortunately no, but I can prevent her from dying".
After Ryoji lays Akeno on the bed of the Velvet Room's spare bedroom he heads back downstairs, but Koneko and Kiba have already left. "Sorry Makoto, I... just don't want you to suffer again" mutters the ex-appraiser.
Rias is barely able to avoid being hit by Kazan now that her movements are compromised by her broken wing. "TIME TO DIE DEVIL!" roars the oni slamming his weapon on Rias. However the weapon doesn't hit the girl, instead a one-handed sword blocks the tetsubo. Makoto stands between Rias and Kazan blocking the hit with the Sword of Lucifer.
"Gremory, are you fine?" asks Makoto coughing blood, the impact of the hit not being completely dispersed by his sword. 'I really wish I had the omnipotent orb with me' thinks Makoto. 'YOU ARE SUICIDAL UNIVERSE GO AWAY FROM THERE!' shouts Lucifer. Makoto shakes his head dismissing the Morning Star comments.
"Y-yuk!?" says Rias shocked by seeing the boy. "Gremory listen closely. I can't use my personas so you are the only one able to damage him" explains Makoto. Rias nods her head and stands beside the messiah. "Another traitor? Annoying!" shouts Kazan launching himself at Makoto.
Makoto manages to parry the attack with Rias able to hit Kazan with her power making the oni roar in pain. "President Senpai we are here" Makoto and Rias hear the voice of Kiba followed by Koneko, both of them resolved on helping the two.
"COME AT ME!" shouts Kazan Ishikagawara wielding his tetsubo with both his hands in a more defensive way. "Listen" says Makoto earning the others attention. "I'll attack him and when he's down go in with all you have. An all-out attack" explains Makoto. The blue-haired boy the rushes at Kazan and after dodging an incoming strike he's able to stab him from behind. "NOW!" shouts Makoto.
Kiba Koneko and Rias attack together the oni covering him with attacks of all kinds. After the 'shower' of destruction the body of Kazan is heavily injured, his armor broken. "We did it..." says Rias panting. Kiba sighes in relief and Koneko sits on the ground exhausted.
"I... I'm not done... NOT YET! THIS IS NOTHING!" Kazan stands up his tetsubo now broken in half. He presses his hand on his chest.
