Chapter 18
Swinging quickly to Central Park, Spider-Man knew he had to be quick, from the sounds of it someone was stalking Natalie and she sounded scared, worried. The only good part was there were still plenty of people in Central Park at the moment. But the moment she got alone, there was the chance that this stalker would strike. Determined to make sure that didn't happen, Spidey also had to temper his desire to stop the stalker directly. He knew that he had to be careful. Due to the number of people around, finding the stalker would be hard enough, but catching him without causing too much of a disturbance would be even harder.
'Almost there, okay, just hold on Natalie.' Spider-Man thought. 'Remember, think clearly, tackle this as Spider-Man, not Jamie.'
He had to control his impulse to save his friend in the most direct way possible, he had to play it smart. There couldn't be any mistakes. So upon reaching Central Park, Spider-Man used his invisibility to get to his destination with some discretion and soon he reached it, Belvedere Castle. Landing on it and turning visible again, Spider-Man looked around carefully and sure enough he soon spotted Natalie. She was still on her phone, likely still talking to her father, but her fear was obvious, she kept glancing around and was trying to prolong leaving the area around the castle where there were still people around. Sure enough there wasn't a soul to be seen on the pathways, just stepping away from the castle would be walking right into the stalkers hands.
Spider-Man scanned the crowd but shook his head.
'No way of knowing exactly what's going on here, need to get a closer look, but still gotta be discreet. Hmmm...perfect, this is perfect chance to use my new Spider-Bot.' He thought to himself.
So, setting things up carefully, he soon took cover and activated the special feature in his mask lenses to see through the camera in the Spider-Bot as he began controlling it and moving it towards Natalie.
'Okay so, starting here, let's see...Natalie keeps glancing in that direction, so that is the most likely location of the stalker, or at least where he last was, start there.' He noted.
The Spider-Bot turned and began skittering along the ground in the right direction. He had to be careful to avoid the feet of various people who were still around. As he moved the Spider-Bot through the crowd he found something, some sort of scent was lingering in a particular spot.
Spider-Man noted carefully. 'Recent, or it would have been masked by the other people. Better analyze it quickly.'
He soon did so and soon had a trail to follow, the stalker had indeed moved and so he turned left and followed the scent trail until, to his surprise, he found the stalker, a man clad in a black jacket with the collar turned up and a black hat, hiding right on the other side of Belvedere Castle and staring fixedly at Natalie.
Spider-Man narrowed his eyes, so this was the man, time to scare him away and then pursue him and find out who he was and have him reported to the police, particularly Captain Anderson. The Spider-Bot approached the stalker and then activated it's sonar pulse, letting out an annoying but not harmful noise, enough to draw attention as everyone in earshot jumped. The stalker, knowing his cover would be blown, turned and ran.
"Gotcha." Spider-Man said triumphantly.
He quickly swung around, retrieving the Spider-Bot in the process and began his pursuit of the man. He was surprisingly quick and at least twice actually managed to disappear from sight.
'Damn, this guy's quick...no matter, I've gotta…' Spider-Man thought to himself, but had to cut himself off.
The reason, the man had actually managed to vanish from view again. He stopped for a moment and grimaced.
He shook his head as he spotted the hat and jacket, abandoned in an alleyway. 'Urg, clever...now let's see...can't let him get away, gotta find him quickly...can't let him escape. Maybe I can still track that scent.'
He acted quickly, tuning his lenses and soon saw the trail. He quickly began following it.
'Perfect, you're not gonna get away from me.'
With that he continued to swing after the man. He was sure he was getting closer, the scent trail was getting thicker, stronger. But then suddenly, startling Spider-Man, something else happened.
Unfortunately the stalker was able to elude Spider-Man, since at that point his Spider-Sense flared only just a second too late, as someone tackled him and knocked him out of the air. Landing heavily Spider-Man grunted, but managed to get free and got to his feet. Then he saw the attacker, who was already on his feet and with a weapon drawn and was clearly ready to fight. He had been ambushed by the one remaining unknown assassin, Taskmaster.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
